- In this video, I do some pre winter maintenance on my 1949 Ford 8N Tractor. How to change hydraulic transmission fluid. I also spent some time greasing all of the grease points. The Ford N series tractors are one the greatest tractors for the small farm or homestead. These old Ford tractors get the job done and are American made.
Tractor Hydraulic Fluid I use:

Lohre Farm is located just east of Crown, Minnesota. Sarah and I purchased our homestead in 2017 and have grown from a small garden to a few acres of sustainable food growth. With the help of our Children, we grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.
There are many animals on Lohre Farm, and with there help we can improve our soil health, all while producing farm fresh food to eat. We have chickens, ducks, cats and dogs. All of these animals assist in making our property more valuable and enjoyable.
We Believe God provides us with all of the natural resources needed for a wholesome life.

I love a video that's direct & to the point without all the pointless bulshit commentary 👍good luck with that drain plug
Hey Thank You!
That was therapeutic 😌
Haha. Never guess me changing oil would be therapeutic. That’s awesome.
So I figured this out. He actually did this correctly for earlier model 8n tractors and wrong for later model tractors.
As I said in the video, this is a 1949 8N.
Awesome
On an 8N, can I drain just the transmission with the bolt you chose not to remove and then refill just the transmission through the "radiator type" cap you removed? Its my first oil change and my transmission sounds low on fluid so I wanted to do it first.
These are not independent from one another. You change all of the fluid, or none. I believe the separate plugs are simply to remove dirt debris easier.
Thanks for your videos. I changed my motor oil yesterday. What do I do with that other canister on the otherside of tractor that reads oil level?
I believe you are talking about the air filter?
@@LohreFarm I'm not sure. If you are sitting on tractor it's on the right side. It says oil level on it. If it is air filter it confuse me.
@johnnyflapcakes2079 yep that sounds like the air filter. The bottom part should have a latch that will allow you to clean it out. It contains oil to capture debris before the carb.
@@LohreFarm Sounds great Thanks!
you still have the 6 volt system? What did you do for bulbs for the headlights?
Nope. Converted to 12V a couple years ago. I don't really think it made any difference to tell you the truth. I probably should have just left it the 6V.
@@LohreFarm Yours sounds the same as mine when turning over, speed wise etc. I will try a led to my batt and see what happens. These little fords are some really good strong machines. I might add a newer tractor to shop to have something with a shuttle or hyro trans. But my ford will be on the farm as long as I own the place.
Which hydraulic oil do you use? Thanks
I believe this is universal tractor hydraulic fluid from O'reilly's.
What kind of fluid did you ever figure it out looking aswell
Refer to figure 24 of the manual if you don’t understand what he did wrong.
And he didn’t drain the transmission drain, which is part of the whole system.
It appears almost of you questions or concerns could be answered by watching the whole video. I think you'll get it figured out.
Everyone, this is the wrong way to service the tractor. He mixed up the transmission oil and the hydraulic fluid. Holy smokes.
Um, good lord, is your tractor still running. You drained the hydraulic system and filled up the transmission oil. Or am I missing something here.?!!!!! Those are two separate drain plugs. Did you read the manual?
