- In this video, I do some pre winter maintenance on my 1949 Ford 8N Tractor. Working on changing the oil and filter. I also spent some time greasing all of the grease points. The Ford N series tractors are one the greatest tractors for the small farm or homestead. These old Ford tractors get the job done and are American made.

Lohre Farm is located just east of Crown, Minnesota. Sarah and I purchased our homestead in 2017 and have grown from a small garden to a few acres of sustainable food growth. With the help of our Children, we grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.
There are many animals on Lohre Farm, and with there help we can improve our soil health, all while producing farm fresh food to eat. We have chickens, ducks, cats and dogs. All of these animals assist in making our property more valuable and enjoyable.

Gread vid ! I have my grandpa’s 1951 Ford 8N. Very unique and easy to work on when needed. Built a carry-all (frame from Rural King) to haul around small stuff and the grandkids. My grandson is learning to drive his great-great grandpa’s tractor !

I have a 8N ford that my Dad bought used when I was about 12 and now I am 67. It did a ton of work on our farm, and I had it restored about 7 years ago. It was truly a revolutionary tractor in many ways in the 50's. I had never changed the oil in it so I watched your video and it was a big help just seeing it being done. So much better than reading a manual. It is now at my home in Manchester, GA. and I love having it here. It does not do much work, but it is great to have with it having so much sentimental value.

i just got mine from my grandpa for free as a gift. it’s a 52’ 8n and i just got it to fire by itself for the first time in 20+ years. i have a new fuel line in the way that’s all that’s preventing it from running it.
That's pretty cool. I'm sure you'll get it up and fully running in no time at all.

Hello there, I have been a 8n Ford owner since 2001, I love the simplicity of these old tractors. One thing I learned in changing oil is to keep the seal on the filter canister warm or at room temperature, the first time I changed it it was bitter cold and when I started it up oil covered everything, my dad who's been a mechanic for over 50 years explained to me that it will not seal properly in cold weather, so now I know. Now I usually wait until spring to do it. I'm from NC. Enjoy your tractor!
Thanks for sharing! and great advice. The day this was shot it was about 15 degrees outside and the garage was about 50 degrees inside. You can see my breath for most of the video, haha. I can definitely see how temp can come in to play with the seals.
Have had my '52 8N for more than 25 years. At 72 it's nearly same age as I am. Just replaced starter looks same as yours. In Missouri I was told to use non detergent straight 30W oil. Has always worked fine. Only problem with mine is the grease point rubber fittings are so worn now that they don't hold grease well any more. Finally had to replace starter last week with aftermarket one looking like yours. Drained back end lube a few years ago. Front steering gear lube must have been filled when I had a shop replace old (original?) Water pump a couple of years ago. They didn't tell me, nor did they charge me for that lube! Good folks. Occasional points in distributor and oil changes by me. Installed new tires when I bought it over 25 years ago. Tractor still going strong. Will definitely outlast its owner (in this world). Old Henry Ford would be proud.

I like the wide front wheels
It desperately needs new tires. I do like the stability, especially when I’m driving through the woods. But, I think the next tractor will be a narrow front. I believe some people have even done narrow front conversions on their 8n’s. Kinda cool.
I just became interested in the N series, or any tractor actually. My best friend has forty wooded acres, perfect for a still. Directly across the road is a non working farm, 30 acres.
The neighbor stopped over and we jokingly told him we were going to use his land to grow grains for a still. He replied that he didn't care what we grew on his farm as long as its legal. He also said that all the old equipment was there so we checked it out and he had an 1953 NAA sitting in the woods. He said as near as he can remember, it has been there nearly 40 years.
After we got it out of the woods, and removed an old bucket from the front, my 83 year old dad came and put it on a trailer, brought it to his house and got it running, and refurbished. He did that all by himself.
This spring I plan to start rebuilding the various components.
So now, it seems, you might be my farming mentor. LOL

I bought my 49 8N in 2019. I rebuilt the carburetor last week and it's much easier to start. Hope to change the oil and transmission fluid this week. I hope to use it more this year.
The longer I have owned my tractor, the more I have realized that staying on top of even the most basic maintenance has really helped with all run type issues. Enjoy the time with that old gal!
The MSN said I shouldn't do any research online even, they said only they could do research........... ????? :) PS I have no idea if mine is even an 8N, something tells me it's newer than a 8N, like a 600 or 800 or 900. It looks close to the one I knew was an 8N but that one went to my sister. I got it when I inherited the farm, it's older than me for sure (I'm 65), As for oil I want to say Dad used SAE 30. I have dozens of empty SAE 30 cans all over the shop. Myself I was thinking about 10-W30, but maybe it should be a bit heavier. ps My farm is in MN too, DL area. From what I've seen online, it's the trans/hydraulic oil that most likely really needs changing.
Yes, Clean new trans fluid definitely makes a huge difference. As far as the oil. idk, Minnesota is a tough spot for dealing with massive swings in the weather temp during the year. I know I want mine to start pretty easy in the winter to plow snow.
I yanked my 8N out of a barn with a skid steer, where the owner said it sat for the last 20 years. Had to drag it home. Paid $300 because that's what he said he could get for it after pulling some parts off and scrapping the rest. It is running and doing work now. He has another one that he said I can have for free, apparently in needs the engine rebuilt. Either I take it or the scrap yard gets it. So, I am about to have two of these tractors. They are much better drug out of their graves and put back to work vs being cut apart and melted down.

What size wrench does the plug take? It is a square bolt head
Also. How do I get the gunk out of the oil filter case? It is black and thick. 195? 8n. Also. My spark plugs are on the top of the motor so I am wondering if it is older than I was told
I can’t recall what size. Big. 1-1/8. Or slightly bigger I believe.
The fill should be through the breather. You should be able to unscrew and clean.

New to tractor ownership...how hard is it to fix the hydraulic 3 point lift...mine does not work...any advice would be helpful...thanks
That is one thing I have fortunately not had to deal with. I would suggest you ask this very question on a couple of the different 8N FB groups. They have been proven to be very helpful folks over there. Best of Luck!
Need to have a disposable rag, or paper towels to clean out the oil filter canister before you put the new oil filter in, as don’t want to contaminate fresh oil with dirty oil.
Hey Ray, that’s a pretty good idea. I usually run a few once’s of new oil through the fill and out the plug as well. Who knows if it does a dang thing, but I like the feeling of flushing out any settle grit. Thanks for the comment.
@@LohreFarm just noticed there is a drain plug on the bottom of the filter canister .
On my collector cars, there is none. Have to use a lot of rags !
unfortunately though the drain plug nut is frozen on there and one side is rounded off. how do i get the drain plug out ?
Without looking at it, it's pretty hard to tell. I sounds like maybe a vice grip would be of some help though. And getting a replacement on order too.

Haha, I did not paint it. Would love to do a full restoration at some point. I think it would be best to have a second tractor first.
