  • Welcome back!
Today i fit the engine and gearbox back in.
This procedure is the easiest way to fit the engine with the gearbox still attached.
Before fitting make as much room in the chassis as possible.
I do this by removing the gear selector and fitting the engine mountings after putting the engine into the correct position.
This allows plenty of room the guide the transfer box and gearbox through the bulkhead without struggling to find room or levering against weak components.

Thanks for sharing. I am busy with a similar project and had no reference for the mountings as I fitted a 300 tdi to a bare chassis

Glad I wasnt around watching you push that hoist around with that engine swinging at that height . I would have had kittens. Excellent job as always👍🏻

Awesome job!! It’s scary when the engine gets that high with a lift.

Nice one Tom. I think I'll pull my box too and check that output shaft. I don't have the rusty dust around the drain hole, but I have heard of them failing at 19K miles!! At least if mine's OK I can grease it.
Will you please make a video on how you prime the fuel pump before start up, I'm intrigued to see how you go about it. I will also be interested to see what you do ablout the inevitable dash light you're gonna get with the ECU blanked off?

Yes you may as well pull it out and have a look. With your low mileage it will probably just need greasing up. Yes course i will its pretty easy actually as long as you have something to pull the fuel through. Yes i am going to document everything reguarding maintenance on the land rover now.

Great videos 👏👏👏 Can I ask if you pulled all three sections together when removing from car?
I’ve replaced the transfer box before so not worried about that and have invested in an engine hoist. Mechanical personal level 6 out of 10 😂
I’m about to do the same so any advice would be helpful 😊

I would have fitted the TX case after, the engine was way too high on the lift for my liking......good video tho

Good set of video's Tom, Just about to put a 300 tdi in to replace the VM 2.5 in my 91 RRC, Hope it goes as well as yours, I wonder how long it will be before the new defender pops up with repair videos??

Thank you. The 300 tdi is a great engine. We had a 300tdi when i was a kid and it started first time everytime. Ive seen a few RRC with them fitted and not heard a bad word about it. I think the new one will be like most cars needing specific sofware and diagnostics but also alot of the parts will more than likely only be available from Land Rover until its been in production for over 5 years.

@@lifes.projects The only reason I am fitting a 300 TDI is cost, I've done 300,000 mls 0n the VM but the cost of a rebuild is 5 times that of buying the rotten Disco and rebuilding the engine. I am still a fan of the VM 2.5 though lots of power but parts are getting like hens teeth nowadays, Looking forward to more videos.

Im taking my engine out next week but thinking of leaving the transmission in place and undoing the engine mounts so i can move it forward then up and out, Im only doing an engine refurb so no body work but i will be removing the radiator and inter cooler, just wanted your thoughts on doing it this way and any tips would be much appreciated, Thanks.

@@markdefender2973 If you are doing it on the drive without a pit then thats the best way to do it in my opinion. The centre support has a mounting point to rest the gearbox on while the engine is out (chock with a peice of wood between it)
