running rough and smoking badly , what’s happened to this engine ???

A breath of fresh air from a proper mechanic telling the absolute gospel truth. I'm an electrical engineer and what Al said about electric vehicles is spot on. We are being blind sided by the wokeraty to convince the plebery thay know what they are talking about and its rubbish all this woo woo climate BS gets on my bresticles. The rot set in when we stopped the engineers building the future and allowed the accountants to run stuff. We had the industrial revolution that built our modern world we are now in the phase of mechanical dissolution. I'm retired now and so pleased about it because my job just became an excercise in box ticking and form filling to satisfy people that weren't fit to carry my tools. Rant over. Well said Al onword and upward and looking forward to seeing you and fudgy doing what you do best. 👍PS I have an old 60 plate diesel Honda 2.2 Diesel CRV for the last 13 years. I will be keeping it until the wheels drop off.
Al , I've been saying the exact same thing for years . I have 2 cars , a 1975 BMW 3.0s and a 1976 Ford Granada sedan , both on the original engine both on the original gearbox . Both serviced every year , oils and filters changed . I've owned the BMW for 36 years and the Ford for 28 years . I am constantly criticised by numpties who whitter on about the environmental damage that I'm doing and I should replace them every 3 years for a new more economical vehicle....so instead of my BMW I should have had 12 cars and 10 for the Ford.....no body considers the polution caused by constantly making new cars , and nobody considers the disposal of cars either . I shall ignore everyone and continue to drive my old cars until I can't drive anymore....ps , my van is a Chevy G30 from 1984 which I;ve owned for 26 years too , nice vid Al and you are SPOT ON with your rant
Another tradesman who says the same as me (although different trade) WE (UK manufacturers) dont make stuff to last its all a throwaway society. TVs, fridges, microwaves, cars, furniture, you name it its made CHEAP. For one reason only! chuck it when it breaks! Its scandalous, look at the stuff made by victorian engineers, still working today might be old but it still works! Well said Al, I totally agree with everything you said mate!
I have a Aermaster oscillating fan from the 1940s works like a dream. Oh and a Land cruiser 80 that will run forever.
I still use a gas boiler that was built in the 80s... only needed a new relay during its time
I am also a landrover nut , I’ve had a garage just like yours for 30 years or more, and have been driven insane by exactly what you have described, I run a 1978 landrover light weight which has been fully restored on a galvanised chassis. It starts and runs and can be serviced with the greatest of ease, I sort of think the utility landrover was once okay 🤭 but now absolutely horrendous ✊
Everything you said is 100% spot on Al. Nothing lasts these days its all cheap rubbish. I'm a landrover nut and I drive a 38 year old 200tdi 110 . She's still going strong and you can fix it when you need to. Old school mechanics like you and few and far between now. One of the best channels on UA-cam. Keep up the good work.

Watching a UA-cam channel yesterday a 1988 peugeot 504 pickup diesel sat in a field for 15 yrs got eaten by the local undergrowth floors totally rotted out.
Putva battery on it changed the oil which was like water.and changed diesel filter and fresh fuel.
4th spin of the engine it fired up.
And sounded like old peugeot.
Couldn't believe it.
So yeah imagine doing that with a modern vehicle.
Thing wouldn't even turn over I'd thought.
I still got my 1985 diesel escort van.
Still does 60mpg and starts on the button after glow plugs have been heated twice 😂😂.

Great to see some honest truth. I have a 2.4 Defender and just spent a few weeks putting a M57 and auto box in it as the Ford junk was dying. It should have had this from the beginning.
Just watched this and having been in working on vehicles and engines for 57 years I have all the same thoughts as you, most of my work now is on older engines without all this electronic junk. I see that most vehicle problems now are down to electrical faults on some component that we never needed years ago. I look forward to watching this channel more now! Just to end I have never been a Ford lover and when they took over Land Rover, that is when the rot started. I worked on loads of Landies from Series 2a,, 3 and 90/110 up until mid 1990's and they were easy to maintain then.

I’m 54 years old, had my first Land Rover at 17 and opened my independent Land Rover garage around 25 years ago, this guy has literally just taken the words from my mouth, literally, I have my own UA-cam channel ( Joes rides) and was going to do a video almost identical to this, you beat me to it! Excellent philosophy Al.. I had my Missus Hyundai serviced as part of the free Servicing plan! They tried to tell that although after three years and only 9000 on the clock, the plugs required changing as they wear out with age, whether or not they’ve run. I’ve still got old Champion N5s and N9y plugs up my garage that are still s good as new. What utter crap we put up with! Now I’m on a rant! Keep’em coming. I could spit feathers, but only from a reliably sourced, environmentally friendly, green, free range Clucker. Goodnight!
Your rant is well placed, sir. I've been saying that for years. I still have the socket set I got for my 18th birthday, and I'm 52 now! Quality lasts. Companies nowadays don't want you to be able to fix anything, from cars to toasters. All they want is for you to buy new ones every couple of years.

Thank you for speaking the truth and making sense. I own a few Landy’s and run them with 3.5 litre V8’s on gas (LPG). After all my years doing this to reduce my carbon footprint, now this Government tries to take all that away by taking gas licenses of the motorway filling stations . I will carry on fitting bigger tanks. With 40 year old equipment. Thank you for your channel.
My wife is an owner of a 2012 land rover 110 2.2 , which she has owned from new . It's done over 230,000 miles on the original engine. It's had a new turbo, new head, and during its warranty from new it was practically rebuilt underneath, it serves the purpose. So I guess we have been lucky. Whilst it's easy to look at it with rose tinted glasses, as you have very beautifully articulated, they are not for everyone and certainly not without their problems.

I have a Freelander 1 TD4 and have fixed every issue mentioned on any forum you could think of. I love it as it’s been a very hard teacher… BUT.. would I ever buy a new Range or Land Rover? Ha no chance. I drive a truck on the motorway .. in the last few years and more recently the VAST majority of broken down vehicles I see on the network are Land Rovers. Shocking!

So refreshing to hear someone talk some sense. You don't feel confident driving modern vehicles, regularly going into limp mode with some emission based problem. Old school engineering, regular servicing and maintenance by engineers like yourselves, not Hollywood part fitters trying to blind is with fault codes.

your rant is spot on and just how i feel about the state of things today ,,as an old school engineer much like yourself i am a great believer in keeping things simple and repairable it cuts out so much waste and pollution . the amount of electronics in modern cars is just crazy even dealerships cant diagnose them to make repair's mechanics don't exist anymore there just fiters of new bits and often just will fit a new part to see if that sorts out problems regardless of cost to the customer
Unbelievably true. As a third gen mechanic who is now 51yr old I'm one of the youngest spanner chuckers I know. Soon it won't matter how well things are made because there won't even be someone who'll know what tyre pressures are. Still running an '88 Merc 207d....old but worth more than gold.
Snap a customer purchased one from them I fitted it and it lasted 4 months they tried to say it was my fault and as I pointed out it was crated complete all I did was fit injectors and auxiliary parts .the years warranty is toast it's not worth the time to read.
Customer scrapped vehicle in the end and bought new one .
When I drive about locally with Mrs P in our recovery truck we laugh at the quantity of landy rover ISH type vehicles like wounded soldiers laying all over the place .
On the other side I know a chap who owns a land rover repair business who is now a multi millionaire it's just bonkers.

Was at first going to skip to another channel BUT thought I’d give you chance to see your Engineering skills.
Then I soon realised you knew what you were doing. In the process I soon realised you were a straight talking man, “saying as it is”
I’m not going to rant on. I’m now retired but started my working life in the Midlands soon the Accountants starting to take control over the Engineers, the manufacturing soon went down the pan & I took my Engineering skills Abroad.

I fully agree on the opinions of throwaway society problems we have today, I used to do computer repair for an actual job, and when they introduced lead-free solder (which also affects vehicles with their onboard comptuers!), the faults and failures increased, the waste massively increased as a result, and repairing them, unless you have equipment that costs thousands to acquire, forget it, it's not worth my time to fix them any more!!
Then of course you get certain brands (such as the fruity kind) that decided it's a BRILLIANT idea to glue their computers and mobile phones together, and add hardware-DRM on top of that all to prevent you fixing their stuff, so you either destroy it in taking it apart, or they blocked your device from running because of "unauthorised parts", something they were forced to undo owing to the fact it was, funnily enough, unlawful, it's despicable...
But repairing stuff in general, like yourself, I love fixing things, my washing machine was built in 1998, cost me £30 on ebay with a couple issues I sorted, still works fine with a few simple repairs here and there, and in the 8 years I've had the thing, it's outlasted other peoples' modern washers who have come to me asking for repair which I had to refuse, when I come across something that I can't fix and have to refuse repairing because it has been intentionally designed to fail or block repair unless you pay more than the thing is worth in spares, it makes me angry, they just care about profits, not the consumer's experience...
I had a Rangerover with a Mazda Perkins three litre turbo diesel. Guaranteed to 400,000 miles. Noisy but pulled away in top. You are right about today's build quality, and saving the Planet will never happen.

Well said that man. This throw away world does my head in. My old boiler packed up after 24 years and in that time I spent around £400 on repairs etc. I then had a new boiler fitted and was told by the plumber that I would be lucky to get 10 years out of it. Makes me mad 🤬
So nice to hear someone other than me ranting about how garages work, I trained late 60’s early 70’s as a mechanic the course following mine they called them fitters - fitters of parts! They’ve now moved on from fitters to technicians where everything diagnostic wise is done via a bloody computer, it seems that we’ve now lost all ability to diagnose a fault without one. We bought a Range Rover Evoque and 2wks later the steering went stiff so the garage we bought it from said there’s a recall take it to Sytners Landrover where they replaced the aluminium bolts holding the motor to the rack, on collection they said we need to do a diagnostic on it as the steering is stiff but assured me it was safe I told them there’s no need to do a diagnostic on it at £210per hr so I drove home and after just 11miles the rack failed completely. The new rack is £4700 plus 6-8hrs labour so fortunately after actually owning the car for just 7weeks we got our money back, then they made them almost uninsurable because of keyless technology.

I own and work on older Defenders, most parts are cheap and they're easy to fix pre Td5, I've worked on a new Defender.... Junk. Plastic junk and in no way is it a light truck like the old one.
Garages don't want to do anything but simple oil or brake pad jobs, 3 garages refused to fit a front to back brake pipe on my sisters 14 plate Shogun, it was a faf to do but nothing more. Totally agree that we should be keeping what we have for as long as possible, fix things like we used to, that's surely better for everyone.
I was at some work based fire training recently and the guy who was teaching us told us that currently the fire service are still developing ways to fight lithium fires. I believe that type of fire cannot be fought conventionally!! Keep making the content Al, happy ranting!
Ave heard of them lifting electric vehicles into skips filled with water and just leaving them fully submerged for a day or two cause your just pissing in the wind trying to put them out with a hose
Red Ford Escort XR3i 1986 (D reg) continues to start on the button. Annual self oil change. Minor paint blistering on door panel, kept under control will last another (40 yrs). Easy access to everything under the bonnet and easy to work on. Comes with a cassette player and cassette holder😂 And, it still smells like it’s just come out of the Ford factory 😂 I wouldn’t want it any other way. My other car is a black BMW 525 M Sport diesel (2007) an absolute monster of a car, beautiful to own and drive. Thanks Al for all you do.

Have had a Clk270 diesel 6 speed for 15 years, thing will last forever with maintainence.

Your spot on Al . My dad has a Peugeot 308 SW that had a sump leak he had it done and it went again. Apparently they don't use gaskets just silicone 😞. Can't beat the old ways using gaskets in my book mate 👍.

My land rover did the exact same thing today when driving on the motorway. literally smoked the freeway and was very lucky to quickly stop the vehicle 😭😭😭 it’s being looked at by a defender garage but boy these are horrendous engines.. i used to drive a td5 and it never had any problem. Miss that!

I have a client who has just been through the doom of an ingenium timing chain failure in his Freelander. A complete Land Rover lover all his life. Said this was his last ever one. He has had it repaired but it lives on borrowed PX time , but no one in the trade wants to touch them, as they know how bad they are. The grenade has the pin removed , like the tensioner pin and awaits the boom. Was about 5 or 6k to get the job done.
Modern diesels are just crap. All this egr, dpf and electronic injectors are just a recipe of expense and short lived life expectancy. I run a fleet of diesel transits and they have the 2 ltr wet belts , so facing an additional expected boom from those. Ford have just announced wet belt failures in the 3 cyl petrols have issues after all these years and hopefully they will warrant the transits with the 2 ltrs. The local main ford dealers recently closed the doors to servicing as they had over 30 replacement engines to fit . Was told that by a garage owner who was towing a Ford connect van away , with a cambelt failure and needing a new engine. Ford couldnt do it as too swamped with the rest of them.
A friend had a V6 Discovery and had the Ford engine. It was always being fixed. He heard a nasty noise one day and feared the usual snapped crankshaft , but was an injector fault, which they fixed. His previous one had a Peugeot engine in it , I believe he said and never went wrong. But the gearbox did and other things. Never have a Landy or Rangie or Jag without a warranty.

Still running the C4 A6 I bought used in 2003. Now 27 years old and 357k. Service parts only. Still does 50mpg and will go the oil change interval without topping up. It’s irreplaceable unfortunately.

I fully agree with everything you have said Al, Modern rubbish. A local recovery company wont have any electric or hybrid vehicles in his yard, they have to go straight into the field , too risky .We need to stand united against all this eco crap, NO, NO NO.

I totally agree with what you said. Sadly the days when things are built to last have long gone. I've worked in the motor trade for nearly 30 years, and was taught that if it comes apart you can fix it. Great video keep up the good work.

the old Pd engine is the best
mines a Pd 105 so not the super tough Pd130 but still a reliable engine if looked after. Decent oil changed regularly is the secret to keeping then going. I'm on 144K miles and get 60 mpg driven sensibly😃😃@@manfredvon-bw1kc
Rant fixation. Didn't hear the - toss it - last time. Enjoyable to listen to. Often wondered how much pollution is generated by making all the plastic that covers up.
Unfortunately we’re at a point where there is no consideration for long term maintenance during design and manufacture. Even if we want to buy a new vehicle and keep it going ‘forever’, it’s just no longer possible so they get thrown away… Everything you said was honest, true and sensible (three things that are no longer acceptable in this crazy time). Keep up the good work fellas.

Great video as ever. I have had a 2012 C180 for the past 8 years previous owner ticked every single option from new.
I have done 14000 miles in 8 years been serviced every single year its never had a problem and now is on 54000. Its like new.
Been thinking of changing just for the time i’ve had it.
Been to Mercedes today for an airbag recall, had a look at newer whilst i was there.

Such a pity that so many people will never hear what you are saying. I am in my 70's now and when I was in my twenties I could strip and repair and engine (slightly easier then) but young men that I know now would not know where the engine is, let alone repair it!

Al, thanks for a brilliant, thought-provoking video. I agree with you, in fact I watched the ending to the video again. I remember the time when a man used to repair the TV and most domestic equipment were repairable. It’s sad but things aren’t built to last these days.

Great channel, love the down to earth facts. If you’ve a 2.2 or 2.4 change the oil every 5,000 miles with a good quality low saps oil. Forget the LR spec change intervals!
Al you are so right in what you say. I love your matter of fact approach, as you say earlier landrover engines were better but as you've said our current attitude is to throw things away such a sad situation, keep up the great work.
You spoke the truth about everything related to cars and motor vehicles no wonder the 1990s was the best decade for vehicles and if you own a 1990s vehicle hang onto it and keep it going like my exceptional 1997 Toyota Hilux
Spot on with your observations of vehicles in the 'modern world'. I would imagine that vehicles that cannot be serviced by anyone other than by manufacturers (for a very high price) would suit the industry fine - just go and buy another....
Garage I worked at used to supply and fit those disasters from ‘Ivor the Engine’.
We had a Bini Cooper in for an Ivor engine. 1st one was pressuring the water jacket, 2nd one had no piston rings in it, 3rd one leaked more oil than the Exxon Valdez. By the time I was due to fit the 4th one I walked out and sought employment elsewhere😂😂

Same in my industry, I work on stuff thats either 40 or 50 years old and still works, or modern stuff that struggles to get passed 8 years before leaking, bearing failure or generally just shits itself.

Thanks for the suggestion of the BMW after market conversion 03-04-05 in place as an alternative to the transit engine.
Re-Pressing bonnets to fit alternative engines is something Ford in Australia started in about 1977 with aussie falcon six cylinder inline engine that was placed in the local produced Cortina TE ( mk4 ) and its predessor the TC ( mk3 ) and the TF ( mk5 ) the TE successor.
These were local alternatives to the Essex ( S.A ) and the Cologne if you can cast your mind back that far ❤😊

I had a 1998 310D Sprinter that did just short of 500,000 miles when I sold it and apparently it's still going strong! now thats engineering! I bought a 2005 Vito115 with no emission controls on for good reason! keep up with the great videos!

I have a Landrover Puma 2016 Heritage version. So far under warranty the rear differential has been replaced. Now recently the turbo electronics failed so it has been replaced. The most common problem with these Ford engines are faulty injectors causing a hole in a piston. As you highlighted in your rant, you chuck the engine and buy a new one. My fear is not if, but when this will happen.
Can't beat the old stuff, my turd classic mini, blew ring(s) in france, massive blowby, still drove miles to campsite & then up on recovery truck! Get it fixed one day. 😂 man step had me chuckling..great vid.
