I have two arguments with this list: 1. Fear Factory deserves to be at least one tier higher, maybe two. 2. I would argue that Faith No More is rock, not metal, and therefore doesn't need to be on this list at all. In terms of overall quality I wouldn't argue with the tier you put them on, but I don't think they need to be on the list any more than, say, Soundgarden does.
Finally the tier list I can 100% get behind. All of these bands were on constant rotation for me growing up. Fear Factory stans unite! Also its wild that Epic still gets constant rotation on the local FM rock stations. I wore that tape out in grade school...but man, nothing in their discography tops Angel Dust.
I absolutely love these videos. I'm 42, and these videos bring g back some really great memories. I've been saying for years. But since 9/11 the country just feels different. Different in a very bad way! Ty for the content brother. Keep it coming!
Thank you Finn, 90s metal was a great time to be alive ❤❤❤ Faith No More A tier at The Real Thing, S tier at Angel Dust. Fear Factory SSS+ for me! Edit: Holy shit Prong!!! Still love them!
This was a fun video, 90's metal always hits me right in the nostalgia bone. Thanks for another great video, I'm going back to community college and your videos are always a welcome break in between my school work. Can't wait for the tier list tier list video.
Fear Factory have been one of , if not my favourite band since I first heard them in '96. They will always be on my A or S tier. But I can understand that those albums without Dino will always be a spot for some folks. I had most of these bands and songs on crappy n-th gen compilation dubs. I'm now gonna go and re listen to all again now.
I would've thrown Melvins up there for their work on Houdini. Phenomenal album, as nasty as riffs really get for the early 90s for a band not named Pantera or TOOL.
Man, what a superb selection of bands. Born in 1969, I had the honor to grow up with all these great bands. Pantera, Type O Negative , Fear Factory, Prong, Biohazard, Machine Head, White Zombie ... saw all of them live, and all of them are still on my rotation. Huge huge influence on everything that followed. I am mostly into Extreme Metal these days, but also RATM (the Renegades album!) and Faith No More kick serious ass.
I think it's worth mentioning, and Finn missed the opportunity, to point out that out of all those racist Brooklyn bands, Biohazard was openly ANTI-racist. They deserve a lot of credit for that, especially back in a time where you could be racist (at least subtly) and get away with it. They drew the opposite line in the sand and made it loud and proudly clear. Solid list, great bands, good justifications. Fear Factory has had an incredible run, but they've fallen on hard times lately; they probably deserve A tier though, especially with their influence on industrial metal. They were doing things that quite simply no one else in heavy metal was doing at the time, especially death metal (where they started). Bringing on one half of the masterminds behind Delerium to remix their metal albums into something more electronic? Absolutely crazy. I'd bump them up. I think Machine Head's peak (including Through the Ashes, the Blackening, and Locust with their first album) is A tier worthy, but man, their bad albums are BAD, and that has to be taken into account. UKJ is A tier in my heart as well, and I think they're better song writers than they were given credit for because of their humor and shtick, but they lacked staying power and impact (maybe this is where you needed a D tier lol). Helmet and Prong are legit C tier, and well justified. White Zombie didn't have the lengthy career necessary to justify a higher ranking (unless you include Rob's solo work), and honestly, they had some duds early on. Any critique of RATM ranking S tier would have to be their relatively limited run and discography. Their debut is absolute fire and hugely influential. But more longevity would have been nice. Pantera had some absolute duds to bookend their run, but their core three albums warrant S tier - as well as their influence. Super appreciate the love given Type O. Easily the best song writers on the entire list, up there with the best metal song writers of all time. Unlike most of these bands, they also had a long and hugely productive run, and with a much higher average bar for quality songs across their discography (way better, on average, than Pantera or Machine Head). A tier only because their moody goth metal / Drab Four vibe isn't going to appeal to all metal heads, but in terms of quality alone, I think they're absolutely S tier. They do have some problematic early songs, as Finn mentioned, and it's very convenient to try to excuse it all as a joke - but with Type O (like Rammstein), it's very difficult to tell when they were being serious. I suspect there's a bit of truth to those lyrics, and if they're even a little bit true, then it's too much.
Pantera was openly antiracist too. If people would actually listen to any of the lyrics on the Vulgar album rather than focusing on out-of-context-clips like this one, they would know that.
I'm just going to say, been a fan of Type O since '96. Was never a goth person, was first exposed to them by a sampler cd that had 'My Girlfriend's Girlfriend' that was packaged with some magazine in late '96. Became a huge fan and researched them a lot, mainly because i find Pete to be an interesting person, and it's one of those deals where I was curious who the people behind the writing were. Anyways what took so long getting to is that with all the things I've seen, read, heard, basically if it's not clearly about something obvious, mostly themes of love, family, some of the demons they dealt with, don't take it seriously at all. Pete by all accounts was kind, personable and a stand up guy, with a wickedly sharp and dark sense of humor and a serious love of stirring the pot. I don't think there was any real racism there. Just some trolling lyrics for shock value...
Thanks for mentioning TON and Fear Factory. Two awesome bands that don't get enough credit. Pete Steele was a big jokester and liked to troll the media. Remember, they had songs like Kill all the White People, We Hate Everyone , and Back in the USSR. They were intentionally provacative. Ah, memories 😋👍
I found the Dimebag @NAMM unedited video for context. Yup, definitely said the “N” word to a white guy who wanted his old Washburn guitar signed. Dime wanted him to play it for him and he would decide to sign it or not. The white guy played the guitar in question while Dime threw the horns and bobbed his head with encouragement even though the guy was super nervous and wasn’t playing his best I’m sure. when he finished Dime gave the guy a huge hug and signed his guitar Yeah, he said the “N” word to a white guy which of course 20 years later is not cool. If Dime were alive today I have to imagine his choice of words would be significantly different as most of us have changed in the last 20 years. We all used to drop the “F” word like it was going out of style in 2007 because, it was going out of style.
Time period contex is not taken into account by this UA-camr. But honestly it’s just words at the end of the day and with context it’s literally someone just being offensive for shock and comedic purposes. I laughed when Dime said that and I’m African sooo.
Carnivore was obviously pretty jokey/tongue in cheek in terms of lyrics. Doesn't that same album have Jesus Hitler on it? It comes off as like edgelord caricature to me. Pete was in no way a Nazi.
I like all these bands, I can care less about their politics and opinions. People now say way worse but only some are criticized. That being said, Faith No More deserves to be in the S tier! Hands down ;)
Great list. I still love Faith No More. They were like my generation's Queen, a solid rock band with a virtuoso singer that played around with a lot of other musical styles. Type O Negative were great live and i've come to appreciate a lot of their later music. They always had a kind of trolling sense of humor, too, which I enjoy. Prong and Biohazard also great. Riffs for days. Cannot discount Fear Factory. Demanufacture was/is a classic. Some day you should make a video of just how un-Fk-withable Roadrunner Records' roster was in the 90s. Well done, Finn.
Totally disagree on Fear Factory. Their only mediocre album was Digimortal. Everything else they did was nonstop bangers. Demanufacture was ground breaking. Obsolete is one of the best concept albums ever. Archetype and Mechanize are fantastic. I wouldn't even call Type O or Faith New More metal, even though I like both bands.
I remember praying and apologizing to Jesus when I was 11 because I repeatedly listened to "Pisschrist" by Fear Factory and just hoped that He would forgive me and understand that riff fucking RIPS.
@@ghost_mall The Battle of Los Angeles just sounded so generic by the time it came out. Morello really is a one trick pony, and this album sounds like they are ripping off themselves. There's only so much you can do with the minor pentatonic scale, but Morello beat that horse all the way into Audioslave. Perhaps if it had come out first, it would have been better, but it really was a let down because it was just the same old sound just no where near as good. Here's my ranking: RATM: 10/10 Evil Empire: 8.5/10 Battle of LA: 6/10 Renegades: 7/10 (purely because it was different)

Type O and Fear Factory need to go up there with Pantera. Type O and FF are the only other platinum artists besides Pantera on your list.
Yeah I don’t think we need to rehash up old Pantera videos from a million years ago. Give me a break.
We need a longer version of this. There are a lot of bands and genres who should have been mentioned.
I first discovered Machine Head as a nu metal band, so that era has never bothered me. 😂
People say Car Bomb is ripping off Meshuggah, but I think they're biting at Fear Factory
Fear Factory is a truely underrated and is a true A tier band with all their newest material is amazing.
Finn is like the uncle at the barbecue that bring his own meat to make his "special".
And a pocket full of firecrackers
Someone letting the N word slip is far less offensive than you saying GD constantly.
I absolutely love these videos. I'm 42, and these videos bring g back some really great memories. I've been saying for years. But since 9/11 the country just feels different. Different in a very bad way! Ty for the content brother. Keep it coming!
Seeing Type O Negative and Biohazard back in the days at L'amour ( a club in Brooklyn) and those bands were from Brooklyn, was pretty damned awesome
Best times, first time I seen Slayer live.
Thank you Finn, 90s metal was a great time to be alive ❤❤❤ Faith No More A tier at The Real Thing, S tier at Angel Dust. Fear Factory SSS+ for me! Edit: Holy shit Prong!!! Still love them!
The irony of "Sargent D" giving old bands shit for being politically incorrect.
Sweet tier list. Love your appreciation of Fear Factory and Type O.
Demanufacture was my first metal CD I got. I was in 6th grade. Thank God for the Mortal Kombat soundtrack
I don’t care about politics, talk about music
This was a fun video, 90's metal always hits me right in the nostalgia bone. I completely agree with your take on Ugly Kid Joe, they're probably not an objectively great band but I've always had a soft spot for them.
Self Bias Resistor still makes me want to tear apart stuff
Faith No More is whatever tier is above S. And it isn't even close.
Hell yeah, Fear Factory. I got to try out for vocals for that band once.
Soul-Crusher by White Zombie is my current 90’s metal song of choice.
Mf'n White Zombie🤘🏿
I would've thrown Melvins up there for their work on Houdini. Phenomenal album, as nasty as riffs really get for the early 90s for a band not named Pantera or TOOL.
I was kinda upset that you didn't mention death metal but then I realized you can do a whole tier list for 90s death metal alone
Truth
"death metal" get out of here.
@fernandosepulveda7297 no I think I'll stay
S Tier? Obviously, Pantera (90s 🐐), but those first two FF full lengths(!!!)....gotta put them S Tier
It feels wrong because it is wrong. Fear Factory is a solid A.
I take a bullet for Machine Head and Fear Factory! :D
2:11 The longest disclaimer ever. Respect Finn, your reaching out to new sponsors 🤛🤛
Man you need to get into NIN.
The Fragile and The downward spiral are amomg the greatest albums of all time. They would easily be S-Tier.
Demanufacture is a top 10 metal record from the 90’s
Love Ugly Kid Joe! So underrated seriously. The first 2 albums had some really catchy, rockin, funky material🤘😎
Fear Factory under Type O Negative is a crime.
Finally some Fear Factory and Prong love. Lol. Both are underrated. Both should be raised up one tier though.
I'm from '98 and I have vivid memories of playing Demolition Racer with its Fear Factory soundtrack. Really takes me to happier times.
Listening too Demanufacture for the first time in 94 was definitely mindblowing to be quite honest and Davidian was just the same.
I found the Dimebag @NAMM unedited video for context. Yup, definitely said the “N” word to a white guy who wanted his old Washburn guitar signed. Dime wanted him to play it for him and he would decide to sign it or not. The white guy played the guitar in question while Dime threw the horns and bobbed his head with encouragement even though the guy was super nervous and wasn’t playing his best I’m sure. when he finished Dime gave the guy a huge hug and signed his guitar
Yeah, he said the “N” word to a white guy which of course 20 years later is not cool.
No, Fear Factory is S tear hands down. Absolutely the same level as Pantera
I prefer FF to Pantera any day!
Fun fact: Terry Date produced albums for about half of the bands on this list, most of which are considered their best albums.
And Andy Wallace mixed most of them
Carnivore was obviously pretty jokey/tongue in cheek in terms of lyrics. Doesn't that same album have Jesus Hitler on it? It comes off as like edgelord caricature to me. Pete was in no way a Nazi.
This Tier list video is on the C tier of Finn tier list videos.
Only issue I have is Fear Factory need to be on the S tier. Demanufacture can hold it’s own against any metal classic albums. They gotta S tier IMO
I like all these bands, I can care less about their politics and opinions. People now say way worse but only some are criticized. That being said, Faith No More deserves to be in the S tier! Hands down ;)
Couldn't agree more.
Political correctness is fascism disguised as manners- george Carlin
FNM & FF are both clearly S Tier for mine!
Faith No More is the best band you talked about! Angel Dust is a classic!
Faith no More Fear Factory and Helmet S tier all day
you did fear factory dirty and you know it. I am DISGUSTED and taking my ball and going home.
FF should be easy A, borderline S imo.
Your tier lists are always s tier content on the tier list of tier listing
The first RATM album was their best. Definitely holds up.
Here's my ranking:
RATM: 10/10
Evil Empire: 8.5/10
Battle of LA: 6/10
Renegades: 7/10 (purely because it was different)
None of their albums hold up. RATM is awesome when you're an angry teenager. Then you grow up, realize they are a bunch of Commies and it doesn't land the same. Factor in they are/were successful, they are also major hypocrites ( champagne socialists )
First 3 albums are great
Fear Factory is A tier and you know it
My Misery from The Demon Knight soundtrack and Davidian was S tier Machine Head. Fear Factory is GOAT back in the day. I don't ever see anyone talk about Archetype and it's missing from Spotify. Cyberwaste goes HARD and you have Byron Stroud and I think Jed Simon in the video which is fucking awesome. Prong was awesome and then Al used them to ruin Ministry. White Zombie, Welcome to Planet MF and I Am Hell go so damn hard.
My intro to Archetype was when it was used for a backing track for a UT2004 frag video, the cleans in that voice are S tier!
Maybe my favorite Finn take is the love for Fear Factory. Such an unbelievable and underrated band.
Was sad not to see Corrosion of Conformity, awesome riffs.
Man Ugly Kid Joe takes me back to riding my bike to school listening to UKJ on my CD player on my way to school in 5th grade. Found this gem in my dad's CD collection as a kid
Pantera #1 Saint Dime's legend will live on forever
Agreed 100 rip saint dime and saint vinnie two irreplaceable LEGENDS.
My first metal concert ever was Rob Zombie, Monster Magnet and Fear Factory in 98.. ON HALLOWEEN! Didn't realize how epic that was at the time, but wow. In retrospect that's how you kick off a lifelong love of 90s metal.
How old were you then?
@@yungtrunks1194 sixteen
I would have Fear Factory as A, if not S tier. Demanufacture completely changed my perspective on what I wanted from metal. Seen them live many times, but you never forget your first. It was at an open-air festival, which I didn't think would translate to their style. Boy was I wrong!
To be fair now, Type-O-Negative also has a song called "Kill All The White People".
Fear Factory sounds like a AA battery given musical sentience
Yoo let's goo, I also love Fear factory. Absolutely agree, they deserve way more attention and appreciation! Overall, but Especially for their older albums! Great great Band
Plus, machine head imo deserves the B or A tier spot on the list, same with fear factory
Faith No More got robbed. Angel Dust is a 10/10 album, and the song you played isn't even from the 90s. That's from '89.
Yep. Angel Dust blows everything, except Demanufacture, away for me during this era
These bands went PERFECT with Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling. Brutal riffs and extreme wrestling matches. 🔥
i legit knew that prong song from justin credibles walk out
@@John_Souls yea Paul Heyman had to or get covers but it definitely added to the grunge and violence to the ECW product. It was amazing for its time.
@@John_Souls one of them came out to rage against the machine i forget mikey whipwreck or one of the dudleys
TYPE O NEGATIVE TO THE VERY TOP RIGHT NOW
