I always felt that Jane's Addiction/ Porno for Pyros/ Perry Farrell were slightly underrated and definitely underappreciated by the average music fan. They were one of the first bands of the late 80's alternative movement to start breaking through. And then after breaking through, they established a successful template for summer band festivals with Lollapalooza, of which so many bands and artists owe him thanks.
@@Luke5100 you how there are "actor's actors". Maybe they are more like "musician's musicians", highly respected within their trade (this case the music industry), but not nearly as well known outside of it. For example, if you were to play the top 2 or 3 singles from JA or PFP or mentioned Lollapalooza, most mainstream people would nod in acknowledgement. But I doubt many of them people could name who Perry Farrell and Co. are without the prompting. Conversely, think of something like Nirvana, who in some ways created less musical evolution, and everyone knows who they are.
@@Luke5100 Especially with the internet and the way communities of interest are created, I think it's even easier to forget the difference between niche famous and mainstream famous. Some of my favorite artists are Tom Waits and Frank Black (The Pixies). Step outside of a reddit music forum or record store, and I'll be greeted with blank faces if I mention those names. This may be controversial (I am truly not intending it as such), but I don't think there is an actual mainstream culture in this present culture. At least not in the ways it existed up until the mid 2000's or so. I think there is so many ways to listen nowadays that the kind of crossover game that existed before just doesn't occur.
Anthrax were basically just a more metal crossover band. Same goes for Slayer. Great stuff! Lol Celtic Frost were great … well, for the first couple albums, before they did Cold Lake. I always thought that Killswitch Engage and Death By Stereo were the same band, where one variation leaned slightly to metal and the other leaned slightly toward hardcore lol
Theres this very niche and specific sound that some bands have been doing where they combine hyperpop and breakcore-esque synths with metal and it sounds really fucking cool and innovative, omerta and fromjoy are actually the only ones ive seen doing it, if you know more please tell me :333
My gateway to heavy metal was classic rock radio, which played proto metal occasionally but also yacht rock. And metal was my gateway to punk which took longer for me to appreciate. But i could never get into ballads or a modern rock chorus which is a ballad interrupting a rock song. I would change the station and switch to edm. So bland rock was my gateway to rave music
It is actually arguable a bit who the first metal band was. Black Sabbath is the most popular answer, but bands like Dust and Sir Lord Baltimore launched their first albums from exactly the same year.

The starter kit for me ? When i was a kid and heard a Rock band for the first time. It was Queen on TV performing "We Will Rock You/ We Are The Champions". Next i saw The Who's music video for "Who Are You", then Rush's "Tom Sawyer", then finally i heard Black Sabbath, Rush, Iron Maiden then Metallica. I was hooked !
I can't stop myself from cracking after "brutal technical death metal". Every goddamn time 😂
I remember seeing Scott Ian on Rock n Roll Jeopardy. I forget what other more popular notable people he was playing against but Scott nearly answered every question. Super smart dude. Not smart enough to stay away from the 1 marijuanas...
A 311 video would be pretty cool 😊 not sure how much could be said that's insightful but maybe there could be?
Awesome video as always man 🤘🏻🔥
I got AC/DC’s Who Made Who for Christmas when I was 6 years old. Looking for heavier music I stumbled upon Kill ‘Em’ All. That was it, no more boomer bends for me since the 3rd Grade. By Middle School it was Lamb of God, Pantera and Arch Enemy
In Europe (France and Germany for what i know)when you play in a motorcycle club, you have to play Born To Be Wild or your kicked out without beeing paid ^^
Kinda sad you didn't mention Dead from Mayhem being in the Candlemass video. Cmon Finn.
Everything you said about that guy who listens to steppenwolf is who I pictured in my mind when you played that candlemass song lmao
You've Got Another Thing Comin' is a certified local hockey arena classic.
I watch most vids at 1.25x. That Korn clip was an accelerated banger.
certified adhd moment
i agree with ur hammer smashed face statement, 1st metal song i ever heard when i was 15, the 2nd one was when heaven burns by deicide the gates of metal were opened to me that day xD
On a side note, 20mins into this video and I swear, no joke, there’s been 5 million ads and Ive had to restart a dozen times because every time an ad comes on, it effs up the feed and I lose video, or it wont reload. ARGH! UA-cam sucks.
"I am the Law" and "Indians" probably my two favorite Anthrax tracks
Ill die on the power metal hill, its awesome 😅
I used to be that way, all old music sounded weak to me. I started out with G'N'R, Metallica, Pantera, Napalm etc. But lately i have been warming to it. Masters Of Reality is great
Stepping stone to metal.
ACDC Back in Black album
Meatloaf Bat out of Hell album
Van Halen 1 album

"This eyebrow piercing just appeared on my face!" Hahahahaha.
I miss the Howard KSE days 😢.
If you are not into Glam metal much at all, try the Crimson Idol by Wasp, it fucking slaps
what a great metal encyclopedia. love it
I used to have the Grindcrusher VHS. it had the songs and interviews, I wore that thing out.
what about Suicidal Tendencies? Lights Camera Revolution is a fantastic, fun album. rocky george soloing over every track rocks
Also featuring Rob Trujillo
Like others have said, we want a 311 vid, Finn!
EDIT: Oh man, that nu-metal insidious virus had me rolling.
If you're up for it. Find all the WWE/WWF theme song albums from about 1996 to 2012. Thats some quality middle of the road Metal entry tunes.
Edge of Sanity album Crimson (great prog metal album) literally about human cant procreate. Prophetic stuff
I'm 28. Megadeth, Metallica, and Pantera got me into Metal
Solitude Aeturnus is the greatest doom metal band with the one of the greatest vocalists of all time regardless of genre.
Hey finn i went to rave with my friends last weekend. Best time of my life even though i only listen to death metal. Being a normie is pretty cool.
Anthrax were basically just a more metal crossover band. Same goes for Slayer. Great stuff! Lol
Celtic Frost were great … well, for the first couple albums, before they did Cold Lake.
I always thought that Killswitch Engage and Death By Stereo were the same band, where one variation leaned slightly to metal and the other leaned slightly toward hardcore lol
Theres this very niche and specific sound that some bands have been doing where they combine hyperpop and breakcore-esque synths with metal and it sounds really fucking cool and innovative, omerta and fromjoy are actually the only ones ive seen doing it, if you know more please tell me :333
Let me pause quick and say intro is 10/10
I do like super old music but Alternative Metal is when things got interesting and relatable (musically and lyrically)
