80's Thrash Metal Bands RANKED (Based ONLY on 80's Albums)

  • Today we are revisiting and expanding our ranking of classic 80's thrash metal bands, but with a twist: this time their tiers will ONLY reflect their 80's album output and not any modern records or the GODLESS thrash era that was the 90's. Will Metallica find itself back on top? Where does Megadeth fit in all of this? Will Slayer still hold strong? And what of the divisive Anthrax? All of this and more from the likes of Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Testament, Voivod, etc.
    00:00 Intro

Overall, a pretty fair ranking I would say. I like Nuclear Assault a good bit more, but it is what is. I think you could (and probably should 🙂) have included the following bands who all had at least two albums released in the 80s:
Holy Terror (esp. their second and final album, Mind Wars, is top shelf - the debut is at the most borderline thrash, just like Metal Church, and decent but not great)
    Whiplash
    Onslaught
    Sabbat (UK)
    Mortal Sin
    Nasty Savage

@@zerixritem1934 This wasn't a career albums tier list (and Megadeth have released a lot of stinkers throughout their career as well). Megadeth's 80s output isn't S tier by any stretch of imagination. Peace Sells barely makes it as an S Tier album. KIMB is good and SFSGSW is extremely inconsistent. This was a list based on just the albums released in the 80s. However, even if you take the entire career arc, a band which has released stinkers like Risk and Super Collider is nowhere close to perfection. Some of Megadeth's albums are perfect, but the entire discography isn't. As per Metallica, yes I like Megadeth more than Metallica overall but one has to be deaf to believe that Megadeth's 80s albums are better than Metallica's 80s albums.

Great ranking and after watching this I’m starting to realize I’ve been very nitpicky and kinda harsh towards thrash the past few months so imma try to quit that. I checked Voivod’s nothing face after watching this and I really loved it. Think I enjoyed it as much if not more than Synchro Anarchy. I’ve also been relistening to some Exodus since I just bought Bonded by Blood and Fabulous Disaster (no Pleasure’s of The Flesh though which sucks since that my favorite 😭) on CD. I have a funny story to any exodus fans. So my friend put on low rider in the car and I told him about the exodus cover. As soon as the vocals came in he described them as sounding like a squirrel so now I can’t unhear that when I listen to Souza lol.

As great as Megadeth's 80s output is and it IS great, I think a lot of people view their best album to be 1990's Rust In Peace. Not being able to include that album hurts their ranking. If you include that album with the 80s albums they're Perfection level imo.

I understand it. If you included thrash bands up to 1990, Megadeth bubbles to the very top. Rust in Peace is the best thrash album of 1990 (yes it is and you know I am right) so it pulls them up hard in such a list.

I unfortunately have to put Sepultura at Fantastic only because the debut album is ok. Schizophrenia and Beneath the Remains are awesome, but Morbid Visions puts them down by one tier. If we're going overall, they'd be in Perfect easily. Happy to see Kreator at Perfect. Their 80s albums are awesome! Sodom is awesome, but the debut is ok. Their next two albums however are awesome

@@MetalTrenchesunderstandable. They definitely are fantastic! I'll give them that! But we have differing opinions when it comes to the debut. Debut albums are supposed to be really good, but others stink too. Doesn't make Morbid Visions bad. I still think that it's ok. And I'm not changing my mind. Debut albums are the beginning for bands doing music.

Never liked Dark Angel. Some of the fastest thrash for sure, but it's not memorable to me, neither riffs nor atmosphere.
Testament borders S tier for me, so does Sepultura (both have 1 album in the 80s I'm not a fan of).
I actually like Nuclear Assault's 3rd record, but even more than the vocals the production on all of their records is abysmal.

Not much to complain about the ranking but, to me, Flotsam and Heathen are a bit low. Was going to argue for Metal Church being too low as well but I've never considered the band full thrash...still one of my favorite bands of all time. Solid ranking, otherwise.

I feel like a lot of bands get judged by their vocals a little harshly but I do that too. Suicidal, Overkill or D.R.I. vocals to me are fine but Dave Mustaine has always rubbed me the wrong way. It's very objective. ✌️

Technically you should include 1990 albums. A decade is 1 to 10, 11 to 20, 21 to 30 etc. That way you can include Rust in Peace 👍

    • @MetalTrenches
      @MetalTrenches  3 місяці тому +3

I refuse that incredibly goofy way of looking at a decade. To not include 1980 in a decade called "The 80's" is preposterous. I don't want to hear the "there's no year zero" argument either. 99% of people include the initial 10 in a decade. I do agree that it would have been nice to include Rust In Peace though.
