Man, I will never understand Mike's dislike for 80s Sabbath. Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules fuck hard. (Title tracks, Die Young, Lonely is the word, children of the sea, sign of the southern cross.) Born Again is also awesome imo (yeah, yeah. PrOdUCtion BaD). Dio's solo stuff in the 80s is pretty great too. Holy Diver and Last in Line have some bangers (Egypt is almost like a maiden track). Dream Evil is also underrated. Also also, Judas Priest? Come on man lol. Though I agree their 80s output is hit or miss, but Defenders and Screaming are top fuckin' tier.
Mostly agree here. Though I will say, DOTF sputters off sometime after Eat Me Alive. I don't know what was going on during the making of those last three tracks, but they just aren't good.
Fully agreed. Id even go as far as saying Dio's Rainbow and Sabbath work is better than his Solo stuff. Also yes, Born again gets no love. Zero the Hero is a chilling riff. And Disturbing the Priest. Damn...that opening Scream/laugh of Gillan is epic.
@@Slagdar Yeah, I'm with you on that. Dio's Rainbow and Sabbath stuff I think, is better than his solo stuff, which again I dig a lot. Almost forgot to mention Dehumanizer, God what a heavy record.
Eternal Idol and Headless Cross are great too (Although I prefer Tyr to the latter) Seventh star has a couple stinkers and is probably out of the 20 studio albums the least regarded as a band record, yet Glenn Hughes rips on that record.

If he is talking about actual big cats, leopards probably place 3rd out of 5 species. They are definitely above snow leopards and I would put them above lions one on one because of their strength. They can climb trees with a 200 lb animal in their mouth. If hes talking about all cat species and not just big cats, they are still number 3, but that's out of a few dozen species.
I think Def Leppard was inspired by Led Zeppelen, names are very similar(along withe intentional misspelling) and both are oxymorons in similar ways. I've always assumed that.

The drumming is the best part of Slayer for me, especially live when Dave Lombardo lays down some infectious drum fills.

I am not the biggest Motorhead fan but the reason why he is so admired is because his band was the only band that was loved by both heavy metal and punk rockers during its Golden era days, and no other band was able to do that.
Kinda cap, crossover thrash did that easily because it’s literally punk and thrash metal

I like Motorhead, but get that they can be repetitive and aren't for everyone. I think the reason Lemmy is so loved is because of his personality that goes way beyond what is described here. Also something I hear a lot is someone explained as say your favorite guitarist, favorite guitarist. That's Lemmy, name your favorite rock star and chances are he is their favorite rock star. He was loved by nearly everyone in his community and seems like a down to earth, good guy.

Again, Motorhead has a successful crossover going all the way back from the mid-seventies after his previous bad Hawk Wind. So it's about the music and how influential it was on two opposed genres back in the 70s/80s, which was Heavy Metal vs Punk.
And that is why Motorhead is so influential, the personality was more focused on later.

@@michaelmyers4053 I don't agree, Sabbath with Ozzy is too slow man, I used to like that but most songs lack a lot of energy, and I'm not the biggest fan of Ozzy singing over the guitar riff all the time, it's annoying, I used to like that but these days not really, Sabbath with Dio has more energy and his voice is just better for me.

You penalized GnR for having a rough back catalogue, but they only had 1 album in the 80s. Which had all their most famous songs and is still (I believe) the best-selling debut album of all time. Then you rated Testament and a couple other bands lower because they were better in the 90s/00s? Doesn't make sense. If we're judging bands only on their 80s output, GnR is easily A tier if not S tier

Gotta disagree on Sabbath here. Yes, 1970-1975 were their golden years, and the last 2 albums with Ozzy left a lot to be desired. But Heaven and Hell was a helluva comeback, for both Sabbath and Dio. They were alive, their writing was great, they were firing on all cylinders. Born Again is trash, I´ll give you that, but then the Tony Martin stuff came in, and it´s underrated AF, some of the best stuff Sabbath has to offer there.
I do get that Sabbath is not your thing though, but to this day I don´t think anybody can make a guitar sound as evil as Iommi can.

When it comes to Judas Priest and any other band mentioned you have to look at the entire catalogue. The stuff that they get right is amazing (I would even go so far to put them above Iron Maiden if we're just talking the better songs, but that's just personal taste). The rest of the catalogue... you can definitely find quite a few filler tracks.

Hel Star is one of my favorite metal bands from that era. A lot of their songs are riff salady, however they do a great job of nailing down a motif and sticking with it for each album. Nostradamus by them is a fucking killer album, especially the opening track. Should definitely give that one a try if you haven’t already
While not being 'metal', I am curious to hear your thoughts on Blue Oyster Cult (or direct me to the appropriate video to watch). While I stupendously love the band, that love is for their LIVE performances; their studio albums tended to be stupidly overproduced, in my opinion. I found their studio tracks to be too smooth and glossy, with no edge for me to grab onto.

80s BOC may be overproduced, but early 70s BOC left a lot to be desired in regards to production. Plus, 80s BOC really wasn't metal at all.
I agree about their live albums though, 7 Screaming Diz-Busters and Harvester of Eyes really come alive on OYFOOYK.

You forgot to mention 1 very important thing about White Snake. In their 1989 album "Slip of the Tongue" they had a phenomenal guitarist. I don't know if you've ever heard of him before. He's pretty unknown. I think his name was Stephen Vie or something like that.

I saw Vai with Whitesnake back in 1990 talk about misfit his style did not fit blues based hard rock WS was known for Vivian was a better fit and John Sykes was their best

I've always liked Kiss, but then again being born in Dec 68 and going to the skating rink hearing disco played around 78 with Kiss(I was made for lovin you baby). They just always had a special place for me lol

Personally I would say that Lemmy's vocals sounds more like he's gargling gravel and thickwater.
King Diamond is great but you definitely need to get used to the voice for sure. I doubt most people instantly like it and that has probably turned many people away from the genius of mercyful fate (and KD solo band). Took me like the first 3 MF albums to start liking the voice but I powered through the discography regardless and went back afterwards.
But man those riffs and solos though are SO GOOD

Hi Mike, you should give a go to The Warning. It's a Mexican band of 3 sisters that have a pretty heavy style. "Evolve" and "Choke" are good options to start with them 😊

Ratt has to be atleast B tier, riff writing for Back For More, Wanted Man, You're in Love, Way Cool Jr, Body Talk, Slip of the Lip, Never Use Love is one my personal favs. Also would've loved to see Scorpions and Cinderella on this list

surprised he didn't like gnr's deep cuts. I feel like some of the deep cuts on use your illusion are some of the best songs in gnr's whole catalogue and have some of the best guitar work. their deep cuts help push them to A tier for me above Bon Jovi and Motley Crue
For the longest time I've actually thought Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby of Ratt is one of the best 80's guitar duos and Warren is one of the most underrated guitarists of the 80's, Robbin compliments him well. John Sykes in Whitesnake was a monster on guitar too, David Coverdale got jealous and that's partly why he fired him then later regretted it.
I'm naming my next band Lymph Seabiscuit in honor of this video.

Along with Ozzy, I think David Coverdale was quite solid at getting excellent musicians to his band as Whitesnake is essentially his solo band. He had Jon Lord and Ian Paice, John Sykes, Vivian Campbell, Steve Vai, Doug Aldrich, Tommy Aldridge, Reb Beach... am I forgetting somebody... Ozzy propably has his wife Sharon to thank for getting also the best in business to work with his husband. I love the "blizzard" band, and when he had Jake E Lee, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge. I'm not a fan of Zakk Wylde though.

Many of the metal and rock bands of the '80s formed what the sound of '80s metal and rock would be going forward? You don't say.
Slayer was Death before Death existed? Death was a progressive type sound. Slayer’s first albums were only about a half hour long. Death was ruled
by lead guitar. Slayer was thrash and was mostly rhythm guitar. It’s apples vs. oranges.

Shocked at the high placement of '80's Ozzy. By the mid-80s Ozzy was a total mess again, and he was turned down by the late (and great) Gary Moore as the first choice replacement for the late Randy Rhoads. If you put Manowar into S-tier then '80s Sabbath needs to be moved up because some of them were '80s Sabbath roadies. Tony Martin-era Sabbath has also got remaster coming out soon, so worth another look. '80s Metallica should likely be moved down a notch because they changed their sound and became a big band in the '90s.

And yes, everyone, learn how to get a good tone and good recording. I can't tell you how many guitarists I've worked with that just squeal so much noise and struggle to work with this ridiculously overstacked pedal board.
Anecdote. I was recording in a studio (someone in the band knew the engineers), and on first listen back I pointed out that there was a ton of destructive interference going on with the bass and drums. Both engineers didn't hear it.
I pulled our bassist aside, since we were just recording drums and bass, and I asked him to listen again on a playback. They played it back again, and he was kind of shaking his head. We left and I said "we'll have (band member) call them and tell them it's not going to work".
There are so many studios out there that don't know what they're doing, or even worse, really think they do, and don't. So they'll gaslight you, trying to convince you it sounds great.
SO - learn this stuff yourself. You don't need to get the equipment and record, but learn what to listen for, and how it gets fixed, because you don't want to get bulldozed.
Damn, no love for anthrax and Judas Priest. But it's OK. The video was very entertaining.
