Slash got me into playing guitar. His sound is so iconic that you can pick out his solo in a song without knowing he was part of the song. One of the most iconic of all time.
This my biggest problem with the list. He influenced so many people and almost every serious guitarist considers Eric one of the greatest. Also the lack of Guthrie.
Rick Beato covered this yesterday. I don't think I remember seeing him more outraged. He was both disgusted and furious at the same time. Omitting Glenn Campbell and Tommy Emmanuel is a HUGE blunder. Also John Petrucci and Adam Jones definitely deserved to be on the list, there's NO WAY 250 guitar players are better than these guys.
Andrés Segovia did more than anybody for the guitar. He literally reinvented singlehandlely the instrument, took it from just a flamenco bar instrument and allowed it to be taken seriously and played in concerts. Withouth him none on this list would have existed.

Gary Moore? Les Paul? Richie Sambora? Don Felder? Joe Walsh? Jason Becker? Should all be on list. Imo Les Paul is number 2, but I think top 10 is fair and most would agree top 25. Dude innovated, inspired, played AMAZINGLY. Not only was he lightning quick and more perfect every time, he invented multitrack recording, invited the loop pedal, made a recording studio in his house so good that every top musician in the world wanted to use is, invented backing tracks, and ofc invented that guitar that a lot of people like. A lot of top musicians have signature guitars. Nobody has a signature guitar that’s so popular that other musicians use yours to make their signature guitar. People like Eric Johnson, Clapton, Van Halen, BB King to mention a few would be ecstatic and like a fan when he invited them on stage to play with him. Outside of his skills this credits a high spot imo
Agree, Joe Walsh should be in Top 20 or so. Being the sole guitarist in a 3-piece (James Gang -- hey I'm old, and "James Gang Rides Again" when I was in college.) With great bends & fills, and the only other harmonic content from the bass (and that guy is no slouch either.)
How about Michael Hedges (R.I.P.) One of the atmospheric guitarists from Windham Hill's ensembles, and longtime musical partner of Michael Manring. Hint: listen to "Aerial Boundaries."
exactly, they do these lists where they intentionally piss off boring people whose taste in music is old white shredders and expect the same top 50 as always because they're "classic" and those people fall for it every single time.
The lack of Fripp is crazy. The guy is an instrumental tour de force and has been the brains behind King Crimson for over 50 years. He even has an entire guitar style and group of guitarists (League of Crafty Guitarists) based on his style and taught by him.
This video jumps from 61 to 53. Fripp was at 59 ( I wouldn't argue with that certainly in my top 100. Shocked that Gary Moore didn't make the 250 (Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham (of Thin Lizzy) were at 194!
@MetalMalc Thanks dude!! Ok, it makes me happy to see them there. But yeah dude, don't sleep on Gary, he's a total legend, Gentle Giant is a world of its own but the guitar work is phenomenal
Too male and white for Rolling stone. It's all about virtue signaling and gas lighting. Most of the woman on this list I've never heard of. Neil Young is a super lefty so he get in. He plays 1 note solos. He's a terrific song writer but guitar god? No ffing way.
I love the style of Robert Smith, but technically he's not really one of the best guitar players. Navarro on the other hand can both shred and play beautiful melodic solos, him i would include. Of course i don't know what this list is going for, because you could rate based on technicality, uniqueness or influence... And all should have their own separate lists if you ask me.
That was the case on the 100 list. Kurt Cobain and Taylor Swift are about equal on the guitar yet Kurt kept making the list. He didn't even invent grunge.

The fact that George Harrison was higher than Eric Clapton. The guy who Harrison asked to play the guitar solo on ''My Guitar Gently Weeps'' because he couldn't do it, is ranked BELOW him. Nuts.
Things that were astonishing to me: 1. The complete absence of Hank Marvin and Don Felder. Tommy Emmanuel would have been in my top 100 as well but I can understand his absence 2. How Knopfler was not in at least the top 50, if not the top 20 3. How Gilmour is at 28 and not in the top 5. 4. How Joe Walsh is outside the top 100. Could have at least put him and Felder together in the top 100. 5. Satch, Vai, Peter Green, Eric Johnson, Eric Clapton , the list of players that were rated way lower than they should be could go on for ages. Chuck Berry is way too high. Top 50 at best. No sign of Robben Ford too.

@@barnett25 In addition to being such an influence of the vocabulary of so many great guitar players, you can trace the whole notion of guitar intro plus guitar solo plus guitar outro back to him.
Chuck Berry was the inspiration among others for these young Brits, but Chuck stole a lot of things too the difference, is that people like Jeff Beck or Clapton or Page had no problem to say from who they drink the milk , but Chuck was Chuck and he was sneaky and he never said which guitar players influenced him, and if you don't say that is because you are afraid to letting people to know something that you don't want . I saw some time ago a vid that I can't link to you because it was some time ago but if I remember someone showed in a video where he drink the milk and it makes perfect sense , because music is like that , no one invents one genre of music by himself it comes from somewhere and evolves into something new or relatively different and then it's a new genre , but nobody invents nothing completely from zero.
Tyler my friend, Steve Cropper was the guitar player of Booker T and the MGs which in turn was the house band for Memphis’ own Stax records which was the house that brought up a lot of big 60s soul acts. The home of Albert King, Otis Redding, Issac Hayes and many more southern soul and blues acts. It’s okay tho, you are pretty young.

I'm not a football (American) fan. But I've watched football with friends a few times. In one game there was a controversial play in which it was questionable as to whether the scoring player actually got the ball over the goal line before his shoulder touched down. Even the slow-mo replays didn't make it clear because of the camera angles. On Monday every football fan was arguing about. I wondered to myself, "Why didn't they place a camera right on the goal line at 90 degrees to the field? That would have made it clear!" Then it dawned on me that I'd answered my own question. That's WHY they didn't have a camera on the goal line at 90 degrees to the direction of play: They WANT people arguing about it to generate controversy and interest. Anyway, that's how these Rolling Stone guitar player lists work. No Wes Montgomery? No Andres Segovia? No Alan Holdsworth? Yep. Controversy is what they're after. Achievement unlocked. Yawn.
No Wes Montgomery? No Andres Segovia? No Alan Holdsworth? But plenty of people I've never heard on the list. Billy Gibbons at 102? No freakin' way. At least the list is printed on paper, so it's useful for something. Just add a roll and perforations.

Also seeing Eric Clapton be reduced to #35 from his original spot at #2 is another massive fail from RS, like wow dude...
I feel you on Chuck Berry. They had a show on MTV back in the day called “The List” and they did a top ten guitarist episode. I boycotted MTV for 3 years because they didn’t even mention Chuck Berry. I don’t think he is top ten either but I would put him in the top 20 for influence. Also he did write the most iconic rock and roll intro of the 20th century.
If you asked Angus Young about Chuck Berry's influence on style he would go on and on about it! Along a similar vein, Billy Gibbons was heavily influenced by John Lee Hooker, I didn't notice if Hook was on the list or not.
Really, what they need to do is fully retract this list and then make a top 100 of utilized skills based on recorded material, a top 75 live performers, and a top 50 influences. And pill just the guitarists who are nominated for the influencer category.
I'm sensing trolling with the Aldean comment, but Keith Urban makes soulless, trend chasing music for money. No artistic credibility whatsoever at this point.

Rick Beato covered this yesterday. I don't think I remember seeing him more outraged. He was both disgusted and furious at the same time.
He talks about the low ranking for Andy Summers at 250, Pat Metheny at 157, John McLaughlin at 72.
And a long list of people left off the list: George Benson(Breezin'), Al De Meola(Go), Yngwie Malmsteen(neoclassical metal), Peter Frampton(Live), Neal Schon(Journey), Tommy Emmanuel(Acoustic Guitar God!), Joe Pass(Virtuoso; the CAGED System), Antônio Carlos Jobim(Bossa Nova/Jazz), Tom Schultz(Boston), Guthrie Govan(Asia),
and finally: Allan Holdsworth(He's "THE GUY"; Holdsworth has been cited as an influence by a host of rock, metal and jazz guitarists such as Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Greg Howe, Shawn Lane, Richie Kotzen, John Petrucci, Alex Lifeson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Romeo, Ty Tabor, Fredrik Thordendal, Daniel Mongrain, John Frusciante, and Tom Morello. Frank Zappa once lauded him as "one of the most interesting guys on guitar on the planet", while Robben Ford has said: "I think Allan Holdsworth is the John Coltrane of the guitar. I don't think anyone can do as much with the guitar as Allan Holdsworth can.")
As for "Why is he on this List?": Neil Young.

I just love the way Mark Knopfler plays. Best in the world or not, 96th best or 960th I couldn't care less. He changed my life. Can't wait for his upcoming album at 74 yo and still playing beautifully. 🎸🎸🎸
Fr! Hes top 10 easy just by being unique! The list is a joke anyway
Still in this day we have Tommy Emmanuel and Guthrie Govan - best in the world at their respective guitar choices (acoustic and electric) not on here
You are so right! Tommy Emmanuel is awesome
Tommy Emmanuel is not on the list? That's insane.
@@hiperson4705 In the word of Brian Cranstom- "You're goddamn right"
nope neither, no Michael Hedges Rick Grahams no Jason Beckers or Yngwies -Joan Jett is a better guitarist than Via or Johnson .... The list is dog poop and written by a hack non guitarist with AI help me thinks
@@metramaks
@@cmcculloch1 I saw him in August and the sounds he can make out of just one guitar is crazy. I don't think many of the others on the list can replicate a whole band with just one guitar.
I was shocked that Johnny "Guitar" Watson was not on the list. He laid the groundwork for players to come like Hendrix, Sly Stone, Etta James and Stevie Ray Vaughan. His first record was released in 1952 and he continued to release them up to his death in 1996. You've probably heard a cover of his most famous song "Gangster of Love" even if you haven't ever actually heard anything by him. He started as a Doo-Wop player, toured with Little Richard and moved into funk in the 70s.
Well said, and true.
I played in Richard's All Stars for a minute waaaay back in the day. I think Pete "Guitar" Lewis, Chuck Berry and T-Bone paved the way more for the post 1960 players than Johnny did.
Damn I didn't even think of Johnny guitar Watson. Superman Lover has a stupid good solo.
great guitarist but this is just a list by a magazine. it doesn't really invalidate him.
Great to know Johnny not forgotten. I love him too
This is the Bud light of Guitar lists
I'm shocked more bluegrass guys aren't getting attention. There is a name that absolutely deserves to be on this list Tony Rice, Doc Watson. Bluegrass players mix the blues and gospel and it's some of the most technically proficient acoustic guitar playing on the planet
I like to add a new comer to the list,"Billy Strings" he can write, sing, flat pick, and play Rock, metal, to perfection with blazing smoking licks.
Terry Kath, Roy Clark/Glen Campbell, Joe Pass, Joe Bonamassa, Samantha Fish, Don Felder, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Ace Frehley, Gary Moore, Dave Grohl, Dave Matthews... That's with like 30 seconds of thought. I will almost certainly come up with even stronger contenders with time.
@MagicCarpetRideShareProject Oh, absolutely! I'm sure I would have gotten to him, with 32 seconds of thought. :)
No Roy Clark? No Glenn Campbell? No Skunk Baxter, no Peter Frampton... The more I think about it, this is just an impossible task.
I haven't seen the list...have you? Are you just going by Tyler's video or are none of them anywhere on the list? I'd be gobsmacked if any of those four were nowhere on the list at all...also thinking of Alex Skolnick, Ty Tabor, Paul Gilbert, Les Paul...I guess I'm gonna have to look at it...
@@johnjohn37371 I have read through the entire list, and that is why I am commenting on the contents of the list. The LS fellas are there. So is Les Paul. Not a great look, brother :)
@@MattyK-USA You sound like you think I was being combative...I genuinely hadn't heard of the list until I saw Tyler's video and was shocked by your comment. I haven't seen it, was asking if you had yet out of actual interest...don't quite get the attitude.
@@johnjohn37371 You're right, I did think that. It read to me like "did you even read the list, or just watch the video", and unfortunately there's another thread in this chat that I am in, that was along the same lines - and reading from email I thought you were in the other thread, piling on. So yeah... my bad, brother! It's all good from here 🤷♂🙏🏻👍
@@MattyK-USA No problem...reread my comment, I could have been more clear...
Putting SRV at 20 is absolutely crazy to me. Number 1 or 2 for me.
You said it!
Number one without a doubt. Where was Roy Clark? It’s like they put 500 names in a hat and drew 250.
Exactly. Maybe Rolling Stone should open a dictionary and look up the definition of the word "best" because clearly, they don't know what it means.
You have the patience of a saint my friend. I could sense your frustration. We're there with you.
You’re gonna tell me theres 126 players BEFORE STEVE FREAKING VAI????? Apart from being a showman virtuoso player the guy is almost single handedly responsible for making Ibanez as big as it is!
Edit: just finished the video and heres my take - Rolling Stone got stoned and said: so Jimi is number one thats clear, lets just randomly place everybody else.
Great guitarist. Respect Vai, but never got into his stuff. Satch should be top 5.
Steve top 40 minimum
I am just baffled by the absence of classical players (even though I didn't fully read the list ). But people have been playing classical guitar for hundreds of years. I think there should be more classical composers and players on this list.
What?? Dave Gilmour on 28th? Thats insane!! He should be definitely in the top 3.
Knopfler and Gilmour 1 and 2 either way. Love them both. Yes I'm biased lol
I pissed of when I saw Gilmour on 28th and Tom Morello on 18th
MIW, preach it, brother! A list published without accompanying methodology is crap and would be laughed out of any academic setting.
Dr. Smith: "What methodology did you employ to arrive at your striking conclusion?"
RS: "We just made it up as we went along to justify our findings."
Dr. Smith turns to Dr. Brown. "Is there any grade below F?"
Ritchie Blackmore 75 that is insane . Even Jimmy Page said when it comes to guitar solos he can't touch him . He should be in the top two if not one
I'm telling you even Jimmy Page say you can't touch Ritchie Blackmore on his solos and I think Jimmy Page would know
Agree totally
@@stephenroberge7824 he doesn't mean it literally diff doesn't deserve top 2. thats like sayin John Mayer deserves top 5 just bc Eric Clapton said " master guitarist" and I love John mayer
Wrong
@@stephenroberge7824 how r u gonna say “wrong” lol there’s no way u can’t comprehend ur own logic
They have Harrison above Clapton. That sums up the list for me. George wrote a song called‘While my guitar gently weeps’ and wanted someone who could play lead for it. He picked Clapton.
Eric could never write a song as good as While my guitar gently weeps🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
FACT!
I think he probably fell down the list for being an asshole.
I think I personally prefer George's playing but that's a taste thing. I agree with you really. George himself definitely thought Eric was a better player. But then again, if we're going by purely technical ability the list would be entirely different.
It was a metaphor for Geroge wanting Eric to play Patti
Martin Barre is easily a top 20 player. Underrated and avoids the limelight, so it isn’t a surprise.
Agreed. Benefit, Stand Up, and Aqualung are all you need to hear.
No Micheal Hedges? You've got to be freaking kidding me! I was fortunate to have seen him play a couple times before his untimely death in 1997. One of the most innovative and unique players - ever! In my opinion, he should easily be in the top 20. Psst!
Could not agree more. Aerial Boundaries is a work of genius.
I remember having that same issue of the 100 Greatest Guitarists when I was younger and I'm honestly surprised Harrison and Gilmour were ranked lower than in the original list when they were at #11 and 12 respectively, like I'm still happy they made the Top 50 and this list in general but they're easily Top 20 in my opinion and were the two of the first guitarists that made me want to take my guitar playing more seriously when I was a kid (as my first three major influences were George Harrison, EVH and David Gilmour). Also seeing Eric Clapton be reduced to #35 from his original spot at #2 is another massive fail from RS, like wow dude...
Completely agree.
They also had to shoehorn the whole COVID situation as well. Has nothing to do with his talents and massive influence.
Agreed, totally political move here
Clapton was never good enough to be #2.
@@mattt2581 Exactly . Clapton didnt buy into the whole woo hon bullsheet like many of us , so hes being punished . RS has become just a leftist rag
Agree with you on the influence part. Or top rising stars or next big thing. That would make people check them out more.
It was probably around the time he was caught watching people go to the bathroom.
Don't worry... Your kids will love it!
Buckethead not being in the list is nuts
@CameronClark-bb4tr I feel like metal is pushing guitar forward at this point.
@@aipcr5 100% agree, metal is in such an interesting and exciting moment right now
There' needs to be a list voted on by every famous guitarists that are alive now.
I would give that more respect.
They already did that. The list was dominated by classic rock guitarists. Basically no metal players…
The lack of Brad Paisley is surprising too. The guy can play EVERY genre of music and kill it.
This list is an absolute joke
Especially since Keith Urban made the list. Keith is a talented guitar player, but his actual music sucks. Brad is better than Keith at everything.
highly debatable. Keith is a G. But I do agree Paisley should be in the top 250. Probably aldean too@@nicholas372
I'm sensing trolling with the Aldean comment, but Keith Urban makes soulless, trend chasing music for money. No artistic credibility whatsoever at this point.
I love the Stones and Richards, but to put him above Clapton, way above, shows you have no idea what you are talking about. Even Richards would laugh at that.
Rolling Stone really trying to boost their ESG score with this list
100 %. Tom Morello higher than Clapton, May, Gilmour, SRV, Knopfler ?? That’s just laughable and if Tom is honest, he would laugh at that as well.
if Gary Moore, Allan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane are not on it then the list is bogus !
Agreed
and no Buckethead, Andy Timmens, Guthrie Gowan? but Paul Mc Cartny who is a bass player? this list is nothing but garbage
Glenn Campbell gets overlooked, especially now that it's out that Eddie Van Halen got Alice Cooper to connect him with Glenn Campbell for a guitar lesson, someone else should recognize his greatness. Eddie did.
She deserves to be on the pic but we all know why she’s the biggest one on the picture. It’s Rolling Stone. That doesn’t take away from her ability she’s incredible.
Yup, because she’s a woman who’s a great player and guitar icons are predominantly men. Great to see women getting exposure without being sexualised, ain’t it.
I dont think she deserves to be on the pic, hell, I think her being on the list is a stretch, I didnt know her name till I saw this list. I could name a few who Id say deserve her spot. No disrespect to her, Im sure she's a great guitarist, but this list is completely ridiculous.
What is this supposed to mean?
Surprised Micheal Hedges isn’t on there. He changed the way people play the acoustic guitar in the 80s. Missing a lot of great acoustic guitar players that changed the game.
Hedges not being on this list is insane, as is not having Tommy Emmanuel.
or Pierre Bensusan@@bookon999
He and Larry Carlton, Al Di Meola, John Scofield, Robert Fripp, Peter Frampton, Andy Summers and many others who should rank with the top 250.
I've seen Beato rant about that list, the guys from Premier Guitar also disagreed (in a very polite way), but your video is the most entertaining one. You have a great humor and don't take this list personal or even serious. This is how to do it. Do a funny reaction video, point out where you disagree, and respect that somebody made his/her mind over it. At least we only can mention the gutiar guys we know and we listen to. Ther are some guys on this list I never heard of, so I will take an ear on them, because somebody mentioned them.
P.S. your scar is quite fierce! But nothing compared to Gary Moore
