- Some are noticing Netflix's tendency to entice black users with movie posters featuring black actors, no matter how minor their role in the film.

That is so sweet that he and his two boys are in the film.
How about you chill? It was probably intended because Colbert is famously a big LotR fan and they probably thought it would be a cool cameo.
Did you even understand my comment? The scene was probably written in to include Colbert and his kids, it would probably have never been done for anyone else.
KC they’re extras. Literally anyone can be extras. It’s sweet as a big LOTR fan they let Colbert and his kids on screen. Lighten up lol
Jeez, at this point you're single-handedly cheapening the concept of nepotism. You're reaching so far it's amazing your arm hasn't ripped from your body and left you to bleed to death.
Despite my personal objection to the moronic phrase, I think it's safe for me to call KC the finest example of 'haters gonna hate' I've ever witnessed. Expressing such blatant discontent for the simple sake of having something (anything) to demonize, has never been more obvious to me. smh.
1:46 I thought 'Creepy, Racist and Insidious' starred Ted Cruz, Donald Trump and Brett Kavanaugh.
Brilliant!
Don't forget Roseanne Barr
And Ted Nugent
Well played, sir
Which is which though? I mean, they're all a triple threat.
hahaha he always works LOTR in somehow
I was thinking the same thing. Love that he got to cameo in the Hobbit, that had to be a dream come true for Steve
My favorite guessed he interviewed was Smaug
Please don't mix up LOTR with those shitty Hobbit movies
T. Desolation of Smaug was the good one.
Brendan Smith if you had an extra spot in one of the LOTR movies then you would work it into every convo from now until the day you die lol
I love the Late Show with Bassist Louis Cato!
It's about time bassist get some love!
That's Bacist!
thibaut barguil Jon and the rest of Stay Human are an integral part of the show. The bit may be about Netflix’s racial bias but I think Stephen has shown himself to be an ally on race issues. And my comment is meant only to show support for that allyship. 🙂
Interesting choice to pick the bassist. I don't know why they didn't pick Jon Batiste.
OriginalPiMan because Jon Baptiste actually gets screen time
Shit, really had to dig deep on Seinfeld.
Shoulda used Jackie Chiles.
They can't do that for the show Friends though.
I remember she was the one who told Elaine she faked it if it was enough already and she wanted to get some sleep. Anyway there were other black characters (namely Jackie Chiles) but no major ones obviously.
There was that one episode where Elaine thought she was dating a biracial guy... Only it turned out he was just white. 😅
Ol' Whitey McWhiterson you forgot about Aisha Tyler
The coolest thing about Colbert is his love for LOTR.
Not the coolest, but one of them.
definatly the coolest. he always seems to push it to make himself appear more legit and less bullshit
Definitely cool
I forgot that Stephen was in the Hobbit. I also didn’t know that those were his kids there.
FOR THE HORDE, BLOOD AND THUNDER!!
Alpha0727. He was a hobbit until he had the operation.
Alpha0727 I had no idea he was in the hobbit haha ! Just when I thought I couldn’t like this man anymore I find out he was in LOTR !
I also failed to notice they where his children.
kilmer009 got to it before I could, lol. LOK'TAR OGAR!
They can claim whatever they want, but it's not like those images are variations of actual movie posters that are being chosen by the algorithm; they are art that has been specifically created for purpose.
For the purpose of tricking black people into watching movies...so strange.
Exactly, someone somewhere for Netflix developed the images for the movies and loaded them to the system for use. Just use the same image as the DVD box or the original theatrical posters.
this is honestly the first I've heard of the targeting of POC, but for a couple of years now I've been weirded out by the choices for thumbnails. they'll more often than not just use a random picture of a lady with cleavage who is barely in the movie (especially if the movie itself ISN'T actually heavily focused on boobs, lol), or they'll show some rando dude who's kinda famous but in a show for like 2 seconds as if he's the lead. it's very confusing and manipulative and at this point, people are so fully aware that it just feels like they have very shitty marketing on-site. because we all know at this point that Tits McGee is not the star of this or that movie so why are you expecting me to click through and watch?
like, I'm not saying I won't watch Tits McGee in a movie about boobs. I'm just saying Tits McGee better actually be the star of that movie and that movie better actually be about boobs!
Mandy C.: Thanks a lot! Now I gotta rewatch Tits McGee's entire oeuvre. As if my schedule wasn't busy enough already!
they're just screenshots from the movie, it's chosen from a list. not art that was specifically created. In my opinion, the whole issue could be solved if they only used specific stills that made more sense, rather than include ones with characters with overly little screentime.
That's the Hobbit poster hanging on my wall, believe me.
"believe me" in the sense of "I'm lying"?
New Message - I believe you! Stephen deserves as much for being an A-list celebrity nerd, plus his role in The Hobbit really carried that movie.
New Message And Stephen doesn’t have an ass because you’re always wearing it as a hat!
+New Message
Better be careful. The phrase "believe me" has been trademarked by Trump. If he finds out about this comment, he will sue for sure.
I have a Colbert Report poster on my wall. It is a real poster. Ah! I remember the good ol' days when I could watch one of my favorite comedians without hearing the word "Trump." I loved the Colbert Report.
Netflix does this to me too. I've noticed it with movies I've already seen, they change the icons for films and tv to try to give you what they think you want to see. It's creepy.
I think some of you are missing the point. It's not that they are targeting blacks by race, which isn't great but at least is understandable. It's that someone had to go out of their way to *make that other poster of a guy barely in the movie* . The concept is, if you're willing to take the time to lie that badly, that's probably not where the lies end.
Actually the real issue is that they even know your black to target you in the first place. Do you remember filling out a Netflix survey and telling them what race you are?
They don't need to know that. If they see that you prefer to watch movies with black people on them then the can show you these "personalized" movie posters that show black people. It's part of why this kind of bias and racism is so problematic: There's isn't anyone programming "if viewer is black, show black poster", it's all hidden behind a layer of plausible deniability. As azuman7 pointed out: someone creating that misleading poster in the first place is probably the bigger problem!
It's just marketing. I'm sure there is more disturbing lies in the world. I just wonder why I got the black "Like Father" poster. That's whats scary about all these algorithms. How accurate are they really?
I actually find it plausible that the posters are also machine generated, based on the algorithm. The bias was probably inserted at the programming level.
This is an excellent discussion. Really we do have to question the level of intrusion that is taking place these days. In early 2000 in Austin, Tx. a friend and I were shown a microphone on a Time Warner cable box by an employee. My friend asked him and he showed us. It's in the ridiculously huge manual. They can listen. That was almost 20 years ago, where is it now? It wouldn't be people "listening", it would be bots. That's how that information could be collected and directed towards individual households efficiently.
Get used to this kind of psychological manipulation. The cyberpunk dystopian future is real.
Finally someone said it.
#TedKaczinskywasRight
Is it that hard to just hire some black actors? Or Hispanic, or Asian? Damn there's only a few billion of us out there to give a shot. 🙄🙄🙄
The movies were already made. What Netflix is doing is changing the posters to target different audiences (which, for some reason, tend to like posters showing people of their same skin colour).
I don't have the money to be out hiring actors.
@Luluș Ione There was nothing in the presentation showing that the Netflix algorithm influenced metadata sent to a Hadoop Cluster to provide influence over white viewers. It did not happen.
At 0:28 what is being shown is the actual movie poster for this particular movie. There was no special manipulation or no special graphics made in order to attempt to have influence over white viewers.
Maybe watch again, but you seem to have only received half of the information. Ironic that you told OP that she "missed it," when "it" did not happen.
Saw targeted Netflix poster for Devilman Crybaby of two kids playing in the grass. Played Episode 1 thinking I was in for a cutesy slice-of-life anime about the bonds of childhood friendship. Watched. Found out I was wrong. Saw demon orgy scene. Closed my laptop, forever scarred.
_"wait a moment this isnt free robux"_
~That random kid who got sent to the hub
Instead of changing the posters why not try to make some better movies with actual content.
I mean they made to all the boys I've loved before.
Preach!
But that sounds suspiciously like work lol
too expensive
I don't know. That seems like a lot of work.
I wish they would stop changing the artwork. It's weird.
Stop crying
I enjoy shows with strong female characters. I used to be able to find things I like quickly by its cover. Now I find I have to spend more time looking because the cover is a lie.
Yes! I love strong female leads that are real people. (flawed characters )
I enjoy cop shows, murder mystery and suspense.
Does Netflix target me?
I keep getting the same suggestions.
I suspected the same! Most of my Netflix posters feature secondary female actors where male actors are the protagonists.
Maybe dont judge a film by its cover (or the gender of the protagonist)?
maybe, like most people, women want tv shows and movies with protagonists they can relate to? wild
“Creepy, racist and insidious”. C’mon guys, there’s a poster with Trump, Eric and Don Jr just begging to be used there
Most people don't know how any of this works, which is why they find it to be scary, or why they get angry about it.
Your Netflix account generates metadata over time. This data comes from a few places, such as what movies you have watched so far, what is in your "My List," and even trailers that you've watched or previewed.
This information is sent to a third party Hadoop Cluster, and is then sent back to Netflix. A Hadoop Cluster is what most websites use to generate recommendations.
The Netflix algorithm comes into play at this point. If someone has lots of "black" movies in their metadata, then they may make the assumption that this particular subscriber is black, or likes to see black actors, and will then engage the special graphics. I watch lots of music documentaries and concerts from the 1960s, so Netflix has made the assumption that I am a white male over the age of 50. They are correct.
The people who are saying that this is another case of "political correctness" have it wrong. This is an attempt to get more clicks and more movies watched. It might be a good idea, if the audiences end up liking these movies. However, it could work against them if people find the recommendations to be bad.
Indeed, this is Capitalism and Marketing at work, and not political correctness. There is no Liberal boogey man hiding in the bushes. So Conservatives can put away their "PC Card," and the Liberals can put away their "Racism Card." There is no room for these emotions of fear or outrage, when this is all about making money, and nothing more.
Netflix wants to make more money, so they're going to try things to achieve this. That includes tapping into an audience that seemingly has a desire to see movies with black actors.
My take on it is that this practice is misleading, and it could backfire if enough subscribers are dissatisfied with Netflix recommendations. Certainly, if someone is expecting a black actor, and they do not get this, then they will feel deceived.
For me, I remember going to see "Best Defense" in 1984. The poster has Dudley Moore and Eddie Murphy on the front, so I was expecting to see a movie that was primarily featuring Eddie Murphy. However, I learned the hard way, in the theater, that Eddie Murphy was barely in the movie.
I like Dudley Moore, but was not prepared for a Dudley Moore film, so it fell flat for me. I also felt that the marketing for the movie deceived me, by leading me to conclude that Eddie Murphy was in the movie.
Although anecdotal, my experience tells me that Netflix may not get good results from this. Time will tell.
Intelligent....text
100% correct. It's false advertising and highly misleading thought.
It’s still bullshit. I cannot be boxed in. What I watch one day, I may not be interested the next....
Being based in big data is not an excuse for blatantly deceptive marketing in the name of "better controlling users". It's still creepy and racist to craft these misleading posters.
No, you're the one missing the point. If these were actual costars in the movies presented, I doubt that many people be as pissed off as they are. The thing people are mad about is that these "alternate posters" which somebody AT NETFLIX had to go through the trouble of MAKING (since I doubt seriously that an actor with 30 seconds of screen time would be on any sort of promotional material) just to lie to their black viewers for a click.
You expect me to believe a fucking computer or algorithm made that extra artwork as well? Have you ever tried USING photo editing software? It ain't fuckin easy, that's for damn sure. I doubt a fucking robot could do it -- at least, not yet.
This is NOT something new. I Used to live in a predominantly black neighborhood and I can remember going into the local video rental store (Yes, it was that long ago) and seeing a copy of the movie Ghost (The one with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore). It was listed under "Comedies" and had a picture of Whoopie Goldberg on the cover.
He was in the Hobbit ! Mind blown !
I noticed this trend about a month ago. They had Tyler Perry as the main character in a movie where he barely had a supporting role. Not cool Netflix.
Disclaimer: Im still keeping my service though 👀😁
Holy smokes I didn't know Stephen was in The Hobbit until today.
I'm not black but I watch shows and movies with black actors and they are doing this to me too. They do the same with misrepresenting how many women there are on a movie
2:12 Well of course it is! On the Netflix phone app, it doesn't even give a synopsis anymore! Haven't been happy with the updates lately :/
OMG. That is why the poster they showed me for The Haunting of Hill House was picture of an old hat!
Wow this is much more extreme than I thought. I have noticed my posters are different than my friends or girlfriends of the same movies.
i did notice the artworks a bit weird.
Netflix has eyes 👁️👁️
I hate the personalized posters because sometimes I can't tell what the movie actually is if I don't remember the name of it. I wish I could just chose to have the original covers or posters or whatever.
That stealth brag from Stephen, lol!
Netflix does this to me too. It puts secondary actresses on the poster
This is sort of like the ads I get on Pandora in Spanish ever since I added Santana to my play listings.
All I can say is that their "Artwork personalization" algorithm is waaaaay off with me. If I'm travelling or visiting a friend I'll often see a film with different artwork and think "that actually looks good", when it looks crap on my suggestions page.
Colbert,you are a Gentleman and a Scholar!!😎
A man of culture and taste.
Are you norm macdonald's fan??
Netflix uses machine learning to determine which posters to show you. The poster that it shows you is determined by your watch history. If you watch more content with black actors, you are teaching the algorithm to show you more black actors.
I noticed that if I don't pick a certain show they keep changing the cover poster for it, it is annoying, and my thought is why? I already paid their monthly fee...sheesh...
Was this why Star Trek Voyager's poster only had Tuvok on it for me? On the other hand, Star Trek Next Generation kept showing only a picture of The Enterprise. So maybe, Netflix has classified me as a starship...
What a stunning performance by Stephen, I'll never forget how it took my breath away
Ha, I KNEW that was Steven when I watched that movie! I remember thinking "wait.....was that Colbert just then?" xD
Seriously Netflix? This beyond ridiculous.
Can confirm that Netflix does this, at least to some small extent. When I moved back to Hong Kong, the poster for X-Men Days of Future Past changed to show just Colossus (for whatever reason) and Fan Bingbing's character, who was in the movie for like a minute at best.
Netflix is also showing mostly women on the images on my account. I tried watching one and realized the person on the cover image was barely a side character in the show. So now I just don't trust the images to be an accurate portrayal of the content anymore.
I have seen various posters for the same movie on Netflix as they change each time I look at them, so there's definitely some rotation. I'll have to pay attention and see if they look tailored to my viewing.
Kind of like that 1984 movie, *_Best Defense,_* where the movie poster shows Dudley Moore and a giant Eddie Murphy. Except Eddie Murphy was hardly in the movie.
Netflix is going to have commercials. I've only used the thing once and I've come to the conclusion that there's no way they can keep spending all that money.
80% of my time on Netflix (and Amazon Prime) is spent surfing it and "deciding" what to watch.
Louis Cato is the whole reason I watch this show.
Is Ed playing Insidious, or Creepy?
i've seen this a lot on my account, i do tend to see both covers if i see it in different categories, but this totally got me to watch death race: beyond anarchy because it had danny glover in the poster. to be a little fair, he was a sizable side character, and pretty much the only famous person in the movie.
Never knew that was Colbert in the Hobbit. I am going to watch the entire movie in a whole new light now.
they do the same thing with LGBT. there've been a lot of posters implying same-sex couples for shows where the two only talk once and never romantically :/
This is more individualized than in the past, but otherwise it's not that much different than Hollywood advertising practices for the past few decades. I remember flipping through channels as a kid and seeing a trailer for Jerry Maguire on ESPN that made it look like a sports movie, followed not five minutes later by a trailer on some other channel that made it look like a rom com.
How does Netflix know I'm black?
The content I watch on Netflix is so diverse and on such polar ends, I bet they can't figure me out.
I'm just curious how Netflix knows who is on the other side of the TV in the first place? It could be anyone with the remote, so it very assuming from the start.
Artwork for certain recommended titles change on my account frequently, yet on my friends accounts, the artwork is different.
I kinda wish the camera would have cut to Louis Cato when that joke happened so we could see his reaction xD .
Last time I was this early, the world respected America.
You mean 1899.
I had been wondering why some of the netflix movie posters seemed so out of place when compared to the movie.
Ha! Take *THAT* Jon!
The girl in the Seinfeld poster is from The Mango Episode... i can’t believe I know that information
It's called great marketing. They change posters constantly.
I have noticed that Netflix will use questionable photos as the selection choice. For instance, For Parks and Rec, instead of Leslie or Ron, it was Andy. Maybe because I had watched Marvel movies and Netflix knows he’s Starlord? I think another one is Comedians in Cars getting Coffee, where the selection photo is John Mulaney and not Jerry Seinfeld. I’m a big SNL fan, and I know he used to write for them. It’s very odd. Maybe it’s just me though.
I've noticed some shows will appear with a different main image on my lineup, compared to a friend's. Like it will show a different scene or cast member. Figured they were marking based on my watching habits
Watching this like “wait does Netflix think I’m black?!” I’ve been noticing this a lot lately. It’s weird
Of course our tolkin nerd worked in a hobbit movie, lucky bastard 😀
Edd Bagley Jr. was Fantastic in ‘Meet The Applegates’ if you haven’t seen it check it out
Yes the app spies everything you do
I watch Netflix all the time, how odd they would do this. It's so unnecessary.
I hate algorithms. Just split everything into categories, show me some stats and ratings, possibly let me sort movies by them, and let me make my own god damn choices.
It's the same as DirecTV has done with leaving out females in their " Cast & Crew" list even if the female actress is a main character! Since Donny Dinglberry has been in office this has been done
I saw the LIKE FATHER one and was confused
My pictures were changed too - although I don’t think the algorithm can figure me out because I’ve had a weird mix of movie posters in mine.
Damn. Thankfully they haven't gotten me with this... they dont know what race; my movies are literally all over this world in every language!!! I do miss old star rating system bc some percentage suggestions are off...
I just had a thought... Make Liar Liar 2, staring Donald Trump. How funny would that be? hahahaha
Cool you were there at The Hobbit! and with your boys!
So when you sign up for Netflix do you have to state your colour??
Let the Disney smear campaign of Netflix begin mark this day.
And ... I only thought Netflix was switching the their movie and tv posters because it is widely known that their customers have short memories and well we all fall for that click bait! Ha and we think fish are dumb.
How do they know the race of their subscribers? That they do is the truly creepy thing.
The several Adam posters for Voltron comes to mind:S
How does an algorithm know the color of one's skin?
i just joined netflix and the first thing i noticed was they dont use the original film posters which i hate because i love film posters. They use ugly screen grabs from the films which makes everything look ugly and mediocre.
Where's the box when subscribing to Netflix that you check "I'm black" to get targeted ads? Maybe Netflix already knew I wasn't, so it didn't pop up? I'm sure that once they have your money they don't care.
I feel like Netflix was just trying to make people feel included but that didn’t really work out
Lol I‘ve known about Netflix changing pictures for a while but now I know why it took me like 5 episodes to realise the black girl was barely a main character
But how does Netflix know which subscribers are black?
How does Netflix know the race of who's watching?
Ok so I watched his 7 seconds hobbit performance like 100 times on repeat and all the sudden I'm obsessed??!!
Boy, Netflix always gives me a reason to be disgusted with it - as if it didn't suck enough now that they don't have Cosmos anymore...
This was a story years ago. I watched them try and figure me out for yearrrrrrrs. "Does she want to be in a relationship?" "Does she want to be a strong independent woman?" Obv I can't want to just watch well written films
I am more annoyed that posters of movies I have already watched one, two, four weeks ago are still shoved in my face over and over again.. Netflix is really annoying there. Hey, I already pay the subscription, get off my back with the ads.
Should've had a shot of the bassist after Stephen mentioned him. That'd kick it up a notch.
Is this why I was queerbaited by Voltron?
I wish I knew what that means.
@@egregious3666
Only Voltron fans will understand
I'm pretty sure one of the posters for Voltron had a dim rainbow background too.
@@Ratchet4647
No, not talking about that. The rainbow is normal, given the show is about 5 multi colored lions.
Talking about something else.
The Whisperer of Death
That's what they want you to think ;)
Yeah, that did cross my mind, but I had seen just the one Netflix cover and had heard the queerbait talk, add to that this video and your comment and well, that was what immediately came to mind.
The Shining starring Scatman Crothers
How does Netflix know if it’s subscriber is black or white?
Stephen are you spying on me? I literally have episode 3x06 of Daredevil loading to watch it right after this while I have dinner. xD
I hear that Ed Begley Jr. wouldn't sign unless Netflix bought him a new electric car... ;-)
I didn't know Stephen was in The Hobbit! WOW!!!
I scoff down LOTR references like a second breakfast.
