Literally Fallon's best interview, and he barely had to do anything. Conan took that interview over like Martin Short used to take over Conan's back in the day!
10:14 Conan’s camera awareness is so evident in that story. In the tighter 2-shot with Jimmy, he uses his left hand to “headlock” the guy. But when he stands up, and it’s real wide, he uses his right, so as not to block Jimmy. He also pauses briefly as he stands up to allow the zoom to catch up with him and his bit. A masterclass in visual storytelling.
He hosted television in studios for almost 30 years so he has a lot of experience with watching the monitors that flank the stage (you can see him look at the stage right monitor before he stood up so that his head / body stayed in frame as the camera zoomed out).

Whether it was in this interview, on Hot Ones, or just in general, what I love about Conan can be best summarized by this: He gets it, man. He just GETS it. He understands the talk show business and show business in general. He's camera aware. He knows what the audience wants. They want a show, they want entertainment, but they also want something sincere and real. He has a bit or has a really funny joke in response to a question, but then he will also have a serious answer. Or he'll tell a joke buried within a serious answer. Like the answer to the question about how it feels coming back into his old building and visiting his old studios. Within his answer is a serious and profound feeling of no longer belonging, being saddened by change and having someone else in his old studio, but also a fond feeling of nostalgia. But then there's a hilarious and over the top bit about yelling at Kelly Clarkson lol. He's just always so unapologetically Conan. He dominates the space and he's such a good interviewer. Rare is someone like Conan who can make the host feel like the guest on their own show.
Honestly, I'm glad Conan didn't keep the Tonight Show after all. His career has been FAR more interesting with the freedom he's had without the clutches of NBC around his neck. And Fallon is the perfect TS host - anodyne, inoffensive, neutral, etc.
When I was in 8th grade a fairly unknown Conan O’Brian took over Late Night. It was the kind of silly, sophomoric humor that an 8th grader could enjoy. I’ve been a Conan fan since and watched all of his shows.
Conan is one of the nicest most inwardly humble and decent people in showbiz. His last lines to Jimmy - you could see Jimmy genuinely moved by his words. So many great guys on the late night circuit! You're blessed America!
This became The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien for one more night. Thank you Jimmy for having Conan on for this triumphant return to this same studio where he said good bye as the Tonight Show host years ago. Just seeing this interview made me feel the energy that Fallon's crew must have felt including the band having Conan on who might have been this show's host today most probably and yet Fallon was a real gentleman as always and gracious for letting Conan do most of the talking. I'm sure Conan waited all these years hoping to return. And as he talked you could see Conan looking all around at his once set. Special moment.
From NBC Studios in New York, it's Late Night with Conan O'Brien! With Max Weinberg and the Max Weinberg 7. Now here's your host, Conan O'BRIIIIIEN!!!!!!!
Conan is one of the greats. Not only as a talk shot host, but entertainer and natural comedian. The kind of guy who can make any situation funny, and improvs at will in his daily life. He's also a great storyteller and fascinating person. As far as talk show hosts go, he is up in the pantheon with Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, David Letterman, and Craig Ferguson.
That’s jimmy’s character He’s a humble genius, steals the show if need be. Conan is familiar with the format and clearly excited to be there. Props to both
