I agree. Way too simple for long term success. I don’t know what awful EXEC came up with this idea. It’s like wild and out, but for late night shows. Sadly , everything feels very forced.
Thank you. Yes agreed. Taylor, you are hilarious and an amazing writer with a talent for imrov and working a crowd. This could be part of what you do but I would have preferred about 6 minutes of this format
This show needs to start with Taylor getting to do a monologue! She's a great comedian and needs to get more spotlight! That said I actually like this game concept. Reminds me of NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me turning its attention to TikTok. I'm enjoying it!
I was expecting somewhat of a talk show, but two of the guests were just not funny and the format was a disaster. Very disappointing - since waiting a long time for this show
You can feel CBS being terrified of the truly improvised moments that make these formats shine. Also, the studio lighting does not help the vibe at alllll. But I loved everybody on screen.
@@chan_martin omg can you tell me more about Craig Ferguson and what do you mean by that? :D I've never came across him honestly and only a few minutes ago just saw another comment that mentioned him and his monologue about Britney Spears (haven't seen it yet, just went onto googling it and accidentally ended up here anyway lol love u Taylor!X D
@@olexvndrv Oh boy I can try. I feel like he became well known for his more casual, yet chaotic interview style, usually relying more on improv than any sort of script. You’ll often see him talk about random everyday things with guests or engage in silly improvised bits with them. Amazing examples of this if you’re interested are his interviews with Robin Williams. I’m sure some of the humor hasn’t aged the best but you really see how quick witted he is and can basically go toe to toe with Robin in terms of his improv skills. It’s basically both of them going full adhd brain and it’s pretty epic lol. I would recommend starting there if you want a good example of what made his show unique compared to other late night talk shows.
CBS seems to give the 1235 AM shows crappy studio lighting. Does the roof leak too? Reference to Craig Ferguson's biggest issue besides the studio lighting.
never has a game show been so in danger of bombing every second. what a tightrope walk. This show will live or die based on the comedians they book. I'm a huge fan of Taylor's. I hope she manages to pull this thing off. give her the guests!
Taylor is FAB, as per usual, but it's very telling that the best moments of this whole episode were the unscripted/off-hand comments by Taylor and the guests. They are all SO talented and thrive in those little moments that give the show momentum again. There is so much gimmicky structure; the comics need space to FLORISH! I hope Taylor gets a real talk show one day!!! 💖
This is on the verge of being a British game show so frankly I like that they've got her running it as she's better able to match that style than many American comedians normally would, but without making the show feel imported.
@@lukemcdo yeah but it's like a worse version of British game shows. The guests need more time to joke with each other rather than just giving short improv (is it even improv or scripted?) answers
"Whitney do you want to be in this episode" is the best line ever. Good debut episode Taylor Tomlinson! Excellent panel of comedians. Subscribed and looking forward to the next episodes.
Whitney SLAYYYYEEEEDDDD with things that "I think he's Mexican", but remember she was TRYING to be cringey. But if you watch her points rise without them airing her answers, you know the censors probably cut alot of her responses lol. This was a GREAT 1st episode. And a great way to introduce professional comedians to a larger audience
@@Joe-nb3fs Nah, but you could see how some of her answers were edited out. Hence the comment from Taylor. I would LOVE to see the unedited version of this. The laugh from everyone when Taylor said this you could see it was just in good fun.
@@wacogliderman9396 I wish I could disagree, but there's not a person on the Earth that could make this show look good. It's not her fault, except for maybe signing on. She needs to get out of this show fast, I just hate seeing her having to fake laughter. She is way too talented for this POS. I never cracked a smile. But I laugh out loud at her doing stand-up. This format was concocted by somebody on mood elevators, & smoking great weed, AND concussed.
Very funny, and I'll be adding this to my daily watch list. I couldn't help but think, however, that I'd also like to see Taylor host a standard late night show with the monologue and guests. She's just a big 'ol hit of dopamine!
I really didn't love how sanitised the comedy felt for the first few minutes. It reminded me of how lucky I feel to live in Australia, where comedians can safely say "fuck" on TV without being bleeped. But damn, everybody got in an absolute stride a few minutes in and I was cracking up properly. Very excited for Paul F. Tompkins, he's one of my absolute favourites. And Kurt's "Johnny Depp vs. Amber Bird" deserves to be part of this show's hall of fame.
I was so looking forward to this but my heart sank. Give Taylor a talk show, I have no idea what this is. She’s a fantastic comedian, let her do what she does please.
I was expecting more of a talk show. This @midnight from comedy central and should have never went off the air. I miss Chris Hardwick saying points and FTW! At least Whitney is an alumnus for @midnight!
They even kept the @ symbol. It isn't as good, and I feel like they aren't acknowledging they're totally revamping a great show. Maybe for legal reasons. I don't know why it isn't as good, she's a good comic, similar guests. I just doesn't hit as hard or make me laugh much.
I would love to see Taylor get an actual talk show. It could still have a comedian flare but I don't know if it needs to be a game show. Taylor deserves better.
It was announced from the very beginning that it was gonna be based on @Midnight on Comedy Central that was a GAME SHOW FORMAT. You were not reading right.
One of the funniest things I've ever seen in my entire life was from Kurt when he used to host an old game show I think it was called or some similar onomatopoeia, and he had a bit where he hated one of his production crew, and was trying to get him to take a job elsewhere, and the production member was reading the job listings that Kurt had sent to him, and one of them said "f*** off and die" and Kurt smiles and says "I just thought you'd be really good at it". I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe, and it has stuck with me for almost a decade
Taylor really did her part like she was born for it. The comebacks, the fluidity, always amazing. Love this and love her success. Wish her the very best!
Some of Taylor’s best crowd work is talking to people about their relationships, I bet she’d thrive doing that in some way, have a guest on and have a live tv version of normal gossip. Not a fan of the game show format but she makes the best of it.
Once Taylor dropped he “game show host” voice ( around the Emmy bit) my enjoyment level rose dramatically. Taylor is great. The guests were great. Successful debut. Congratulations!
I heard this also, but as a fellow woman in her 30s I would be incoherent with nerves so I trust she’ll grow more comfortably herself as she gets used to it ❤. Endless respect the millennial girls currently realizing their professional potential ❤
I joined Twitter in 2014 specifically to take part in @midnight's Hashtag Wars. I can still hear the line "it's time for the Hashtag Wars" in Hardwick's voice. That said, Taylor is a fine inheritor, and I'm happy for all involved. May your run be lengthy and well compensated.
Taylors energy is so wonderful. i could honestly just listen to her bringing comedians on and just riffing for hours. this is very very nice to watch :)
I knew I missed @Midnight, but apparently didn't realize how much. I haven't religiously watched a late night show in quite a few years, but they've got me. I'm impressed that they were able to sustain the format with an extended runtime and am confident it's only going to get better, especially with Jo Firestone heading up the writers' room. Taylor Tomlinson is new to me and she seems like the perfect person for the job. I really hope people discover this and keep it on the air.
Thank you, I thought I was going crazy I think you're the first person I've seen comment about @midnight. I was like didn't we already do this (I'm happy it's back don't get me wrong) but I was beginning to worry that I my husband an i were having a Barenstein/stain Mandela effect moment 😆. Any love Taylor over Chris Hardwick any day of the week.
I literally just commented that this felt so much like @midnight (didnt realize it was like 10 years ago). Would be hilarious if Hardwick was a guest at some point
It’s fun reading the comments of people not realizing this was a show hosted by Chris Hardwick about 10 years ago on Comedy Central with literally the same format.
Was about to comment on this! I loved the original so I was looking up some videos on YT and this one came up as recommended. It’s cool they brought it back… let’s see how it does.
EDIT: This show had a STRONG second half! The guests really warmed up. This show is at it's best when Taylor extends her self-deprecation to the show itself. I think this was greenlit because Game Changer on Dropout is killing it on UA-cam shorts, and CBS execs think that means young people want a game show. Taylor deserves an actual late night talk show, not whatever this is (unless shes enjoying it, in which case i hope it lasts forever because shes great). 😊
Yeah but dropout had a Looong History before game show version, and before they’re releasing on shorts. So had built in audience AND the whole cast knows each other helps with chemistry etc. so dropout is more like who’s” line
TAYLOR DESERVES SO MUCH MORE!!!!! make After Midnight a talk show... a monologue, interviews, some games, EVERYTHING. Taylor is so special and so talented. she is so much more than a game show host. I LOVE U TAYLOR
Talk shows are a dead format. They’re all being cancelled except for the very largest ones, because there aren’t enough TV viewers left to make them profitable given expenses. Lower production value shows like this are what’s left.
That's a beautiful set! So many hosts have looked painfully nervous and overwhelmed on their first episode where you could hear their inner voice desperately SCREAMING "I hope I don't get cancelled! PLEASE give me a chance!"; I just felt bad for them. Taylor looks so natural and comfortable here, like she's been doing this for years. I have mixed feelings though... on the one hand, she's crushing it as host and I would love to see her grow in this direction; on the other hand, she's also a great standup comedian, and I don't want her to lose that.
I think they gave her a rotten egg of a "deal," for her premier "Late Night" show. She's surrounded by brilliant people here on this stage, why not a "talk show" format? I think we'll see more of TT, but not with a game show. Would love to see what she could do with a movie script or tv series. I think she's entirely above this scene here. 🤔
@@sydismine - Fair enough. The more I see this, the more I think this "comedian game show" format could work as a recurring segment rather than as the entire show.
I saw episode 3 last night. Taylor looked nervous af. There were weird awkward silences that obviously werent planned. Strange cuts where the comedians points seemed to go from 300 to 600 without any explanation. The whole thing was painful to watch. I love Taylor but this medium is just not suiting for her. She needs more space to be naturally funny instead of reacting to stupid internet shite.
As a lifelong @Midnight fan, I had my reservations about this reboot, but after the first episode it definitely grew on me and I'm very excited to see how it takes off from here. Well done Taylor!!!
Same! I was a big fan of the original and it was the only time I felt compelled to use the BirdSite 😂 I hope they get rid of the awkward commercial lines they made her say and let the comedians really go after it 😂 I’m excited though…I missed the format
The fact that I still have about 30 of my favourite episodes of @midnight saved on DVR, and now it's finally come back after 7 years with this reboot? Glorious. I miss Hardwick for sure, but Tomlinson absolutely owns this. The only thing that'll make it better is getting the best @midnight guest ever, Ron Funches back on.
I 😂🤣😂🤣 laughed so loud when Taylor said, Oh, we've all dated that guy ! I know I did. You are so funny 🤣😂🤣😂 Taylor Tomlinson and you are beautiful ! ❤❤❤❤
For a show created by Twitter and thus instantly an outdated artifact of the 2010s, the format still works. Brilliant panel to launch with, too. Taylor Tomlinson is everyone's best friend, and an incredible laugher. If she laughed at a joke I told I would feel so supported. I wonder if that was part of the audition process.
I totally did not realize the new show was going to be an @midnight remake and not a traditional talk show. I enjoy Taylor's but that seems a bit iffy in this day and age.
Notice that when she said "play along with your own #lesserknowntvshows on Instagram, TikTok, UA-cam, Facebook, and Threads. Yes, Threads", Xitter wasn't mentioned. lol
So happy to see this show revived and enhanced. The addition of the game that got the panelists out from behind the podiums was excellent, a great way to mix up the format and keep the humor flowing.
I have missed @midnight!!!!! The format is so great; as long as the network doesn’t neuter the comedians, or their jokes, this show can last forever!!!! So glad to see the show back, and congrats to Taylor on the gig.
Time will tell, the blurred expletive was a little cringe. The drug being bleeped was surprising. Let's hope they find the line the network will let them bump up against and ride it.
@@stutzbearcat5624 The points for jokes is very very forefront, just do points in the background like QI and let the banter flow. Still hope for the best Taylor is awesome.
I love how Whitney gains points during cutscenes where we don’t hear the whole thing. We clearly need this to be uncensored. I love the show, love meeting new comics. Less censorship.
Its not exactly the same, but anyone reading can check out Dropout if they're looking to see an ad free uncensored comedy team with many people doing all sorts of things. I'm a bit high but that's how im trying to say it. Im so curious if our comments will be read as someone and analyzed as part of their job at CBS. Fuck, maybe even a bunch of people. Fuckin surreal
I love how often the two female comedians got 200 points instead of 100!! Were those quips particularly funny? Hell no, but men suck! F*ck 'em because reasons!!
So happy for Taylor and the love that she is getting in the comments. I hope she continues to get such support and this show continues for many years to come. 🙌
A: I feel that Taylor did a great job hosting this game show. B: I feel that Taylor's talents *could* be better used in a different format, to allow her to shine. Stand-up comedians traditionally write their own material- based on their personal life experiences, observations, internal monologue and perspective on the world. They find their own "voice" and perform the character of some version of "themself" on stage. Taylor Tomlinson has been doing just that for over a decade, and very successfully. When they (standups) are brought into a different format, now there is a writer's room of comedians, all writing jokes together, riffing, bouncing ideas off each other, coming up with a collective brand of humor. Usually they try to lean into the strengths of the one who will be actually performing- steering into the personal style they have already developed. But it's still a more 'corporate' style of humor than a single comedian writing for themselves. (And there I use 'corporate' to simply mean a group of people, not necessarily a Big Business Corporation- though that can be the case, as well.) Someone like Stephen Colbert has a staff of writers for his monologue and segments, and he acknowledges them frequently. But the guest interviews are largely off the cuff and genuinely Stephen. This game show format has a very obvious "writers" style to it: in terms of the intros, the pre-chosen jokes for each round, etc. Taylor has some leeway to respond to the comedians' answers and such, but I wish she had *more* opportunity for that. The 'contestants' have to think quickly on their feet to come up with clever jokes on the spot; Taylor mostly only gets to respond. Obviously, we're here now. The network has invested quite a bit of money into this format, this set, this marketing. We're not going to see an about-face because of some internet comments. So we'll enjoy this, for as long as they want it to last to make their investment back and a profit. Taylor deserves to be seen as a success, because she is one. Make this show great! But maybe the format of the show could be slowly massaged in the second season (or even part way into this first one) into one that allows Taylor's personal talents to be more on display, and really allow her to shine on her own. More opening monologue, maybe. More time chatting with the guests outside of the gameshow format, maybe. It's fine, for now. I hope that this opportunity works as a springboard for future Taylor Tomlinson projects to come...
If she could make this more like a Game Changer (Dropout) that lets her flex her chops a little more and have some really charismatic returning guests, this could really be something. Taylor is super funny and crazy talented.
I enjoyed this way more than i thought I would. I know a lot of people in the comments are like "why isn't Taylor doing a talk show" but I don't think the talk show format really suits her. Something like this is closer to where her sweet spot is. If they add more variety to the bits then I think it could be really fun. Doing any show every weeknight is hard as it is so I'll be glad if the quality stays at this level or improves. I also hope they put all the episodes online because I would definitely watch if they do. It's just the kind of thing to watch when I'm unwinding after a long day. Great lighthearted fun.
I’ve been waiting for this! Thought it was going to be a bit more of a traditional talk-show. I enjoyed it but have to agree that I’d probably be more likely to tune in more regularly if it were a talk show with this as a segment.
Actually, this is a carbon copy of Comedy Central's old show "@Midnight" with Chris Hardwick. It is LITERALLY, EXACTLY the same show with a different host. Still the did justice to the original.
I love Taylor's stand up and I am sure she knows what she is doing. She's doing what another Taylor that I love is. Making a name for herself and taking control of her own situation through humor. Enjoying this greatly.
I’m a big fan of Taylor’s stand-up. 5 seconds into Taylor explaining this game, I’m thinking “oh this is getting cancelled immediately.” Agreed with everyone else here that she should have a talk show or another format.
I’m so excited for this show! It feels like we’re just hanging out with the comedians while they play party games, lol. Cannot wait to see where this goes! And so excited to see Taylor all the time!
The comedians get the questions ahead of time & get a couple hours to come up w/jokes. Some of it is on the fly, & it's still funny AF, but it's half-scripted just to set the record straight.
I feel like Taylor's charisma and excellent crowdwork lends itself to any show format, especially a late night talk/variety show. The game show format is not an unwelcomed surprise.
Love to see this format back. Would love it if Taylor would yell "Points!" when she distributes points. Terrific opening lineup. I love the apology for losing. Great!
Love the show!!!! Two suggestions: 1. Last round is worth just enough points so that anyone can always win. 2. Allow more than one suggestion on good prompts, let them go ham (see: mock the week).
I've missed @Midnight, even recently had that thought again. Its a great format for meeting new comedy providers and the long term community the old show created was real. Looking forward to seeing this version unfold.

Dear past person: Apparently, they took your advice later in the season. You win! 🏆
“Aparna, do you have a favourite childhood memory, and if so, may I have it?”😂😂😂Taylor is 10/10 best
Totally unrelated comment, but I was reading your comment as I simultaneously listened to the video, crazy sync up!

Taylor really should have her own talk show.
That's what I thought this shit was supposed to be...
Agreed.
@@robertk617 Yep, me too.
What a disappointment this was.
Yeah this stuff kills in the UK and Japan.
We need to let Taylor go full Craig Ferguson and just bullshit around with people because they know nobody is watching tv this late.
This, was excited for the show but I'm worried after the guest announcement bit
I love Taylor, but the premise of “who’s funnier from Taylor’s perspective” is very risky.
Isn't this just a redo of @midnight with Chris Hardwick? That had 5 seasons and 600 episodes.
Yes it's a reboot of it@@TheHomerowKeys
@@TheHomerowKeys it's a reboot. The Twitter handle hasn't even changed
agreed, if it were looser it would be better.
Yeah she needs more freedom like Conan got when he moved to TBS.
This is on the verge of being a British game show so frankly I like that they've got her running it as she's better able to match that style than many American comedians normally would, but without making the show feel imported.
Yeah this is like a weaker version of Dropout game shows
@@lukemcdo yeah but it's like a worse version of British game shows. The guests need more time to joke with each other rather than just giving short improv (is it even improv or scripted?) answers
I died at the lesser known TV show “Friend” 😭💀
That was basically "Joey" (spin-off for two seasons after "Friends" ended). It was... not great.
I think it was about something else but I could be wrong.
Just one, no more
Please please please don't let this show die. It's the closest thing to Mock the Week or 8 Out of 10 Cats we have this side of the pond and I love it!

"Whitney do you want to be in this episode" is the best line ever. Good debut episode Taylor Tomlinson! Excellent panel of comedians. Subscribed and looking forward to the next episodes.
It sure felt like she was being given the third degree.
At least there’s a Chelsea Handler connection with her

She is way too talented for this POS. I never cracked a smile. But I laugh out loud at her doing stand-up. This format was concocted by somebody on mood elevators, & smoking great weed, AND concussed.
But she’s paid her dues already.
@archivestereo I agree! It's the bosses that want to test her out on this format first.
Get Taylor’s dad to record a clip where he reluctantly gives a thumbs up that you can play in the end xD

I was disappointed at first that the gameshow thing would be stupid, but the format grew on me. Excited to see Taylor's career growing.
Whereas, I remain disappointed.
Taylor carried this HAAAAARD. Can't wait to see what becomes of this show.
It seemed like a laugh track, as most of the comedy was not so good
Very funny, and I'll be adding this to my daily watch list. I couldn't help but think, however, that I'd also like to see Taylor host a standard late night show with the monologue and guests. She's just a big 'ol hit of dopamine!
Yeah!!!
I thought that's what we were getting 😢
Whitney Cummings being on the premiere of Taylor's show is perfect. She, Aparna, and Kurt did a great job, and Taylor slayed. Looking forward to more!
21:22 "Johnny Depp vs. Amber Bird", Kurt's a frickin' genius 😂
Yeah that was my favorite part had me rolling 😂😂😂
I really didn't love how sanitised the comedy felt for the first few minutes. It reminded me of how lucky I feel to live in Australia, where comedians can safely say "fuck" on TV without being bleeped. But damn, everybody got in an absolute stride a few minutes in and I was cracking up properly. Very excited for Paul F. Tompkins, he's one of my absolute favourites. And Kurt's "Johnny Depp vs. Amber Bird" deserves to be part of this show's hall of fame.
Can't wait to visit, would love living there someday and yeah this is not the most laid back network

I love the idea of comedians dropping in to play when they are in town. From the big names to the little known ones.
Once Taylor dropped he “game show host” voice ( around the Emmy bit) my enjoyment level rose dramatically. Taylor is great. The guests were great. Successful debut. Congratulations!

Wait wait don't tell me comes on at 10am on NPR once a week and this comes on at 12:30am on CBS 5(?) nights a week.
(And there I use 'corporate' to simply mean a group of people, not necessarily a Big Business Corporation- though that can be the case, as well.)
Someone like Stephen Colbert has a staff of writers for his monologue and segments, and he acknowledges them frequently.
Actually there were quite a few personal moments mentioned so far throughout, just not directly related. It will get better with time, I'm sure.
@CBS - watch dropout or channel4 to learn how pannel shows have to work. They have excellent stand-up hosts and improv guests.
Loveeee Taylor!! I didn’t plan on watching this whole video but 28 minutes later I’m still here!
First show, totally new format, and Tomlinson is completely in control of the tone. Genuinely deeply impressive. Nice work!
Actually, this is a carbon copy of Comedy Central's old show "@Midnight" with Chris Hardwick. It is LITERALLY, EXACTLY the same show with a different host. Still the did justice to the original.
100% not a new format. It’s a direct copy of the show @midnight

30:40. Taylor was right. She is the co-host to the screen. She deserves so much more. We deserve more!
Love to see this format back. Would love it if Taylor would yell "Points!" when she distributes points. Terrific opening lineup. I love the apology for losing. Great!
YES! I loved in the old version how the host always said, "Points!"
Love the show!!!!
Two suggestions:
Points!
Is Hardwick getting points on this show?
Ah! I knew the format was familiar
It seems like a good idea, but I don't know how it would work as a daily show, the format seems more suited to weekly. Hope I'm wrong.
Maybe Chris can do a guest host stint.
Fun watching this episode and seeing how it improved over last season and this season. Totally enjoy it.
I love when contestants go after the host, it’s always funny
I could not be happier this concept came back. Took some years, but I am quite happy. Always love the comedians competing, Taylor is fantastic! Keep giving me them jokes!
Yeah,hardwick is always the problem
There are so many UK shows that rock this format. I'm sure the US can pull it off. 😊
@@Fern635 The USA has a hard time competing with the original UK show. The office was an exception
