Thankyou so much for this video. I have struggled so much with IBS-D. My GI doctor put me on steroids and the side effects were terrible. She kept prescribing different types and each time the side effects were worse than the frequent bathroom trips. I stopped going to her and went the naturopath way. It has helped a little but I now have food anxiety and am too scared to eat a wide variety of foods. I am going to buy this book and try a new GI doctor who may run more tests so I can get on with my life. Thankyou Dr Hyman. Please keep making these type of videos.

Mine said let's just leave it alone, I said I don't want to wait until I'm dying...he said you're not dying. Next time I'm goung in with no make up so he can see what I'm hiding
I think a lot can be answered if someone were to study the correlation of Costco memberships to the rise of these types of illnesses. Open any freezer to find more than 3 huge bags of Kirkland premade food and you’ll sure to find someone in the household with an allergy, digestive problems, or low energy issues
Thank you for the information. So helpful. I would strongly suggest anyone with digestive issues to find a functional medicine doctor. Unfortunately I suffered for YEARS going to standard doctors. It was a total waste of money and time. Didn't know about functional medicine doctors many years ago. Im much better now. Have the right knowledge for my issues.
Wiw thank-you so much. I am learning every day. Years of gut problems until it eventually tipped into a chronic incredible debilitating condition. The sad thing is many of us cant afford to go to someone who could really help ie..functional practitioner and all our medical system in nz is sooo archaic that the just try to give you a antidepressant therefore symptom treat. Luckily I have a little background in natural health and have been able to treat myself but its been hard. Podcasts like this give me more food for thought in order to carry on and get to the root cause of my condition. So thank-you once again 👍
I have taken my bloating matter in my hand after all FODMap endoscopy AND colonoscopy I did my research as how can I help myself? I started drinking a tea of (mixture of anise fennel cardamom cumin ginger tea ) I made a habit of this early in the morning and two hrs before going to bed ) definitely see I saw the benefit difference. Also, as much as I could I cut the sugar and bread, gluten free and dairy products from my diet. I feel better still have to include intermittent fasting and detoxing my liver. One process at a time I will feel better and better every day in every way 🙏
I’ve heard about this combo tea you’re taking for your gut issues but I’m not quite sure how to do it. Do you by the herbs separately and grind them and make a tea or do you purchase a tea with all those ingredients? I would be very excited to try it appreciate any advice thank you
I’m surprised that there was no mention of GMO foods and their connecting to disrupting the microbiome OR other pesticides, herbiscides, refined sugar/carbs. All of these chemicals were exposed to from our food and environment was not mentioned. This should obviously been looked at and it connection to patients relapsing.
But what if you have leaky gut and sibo and imo and more and you HAVE to be on antibiotics? What then? I'm going through hell with all of that, but with the crappiest of providers imaginable. I've had to hold their hands and they still can't get it right. *sigh* I need to win the lottery
Dr Hyman is great but he talks so much about himself. He takes everything back to himself and what he does etc other than that great interview. So much info!!!
I disagree with Pimental about stress not causing sibo. My wife had been quite healthy up until a change to her job role and responsibilities which she became VERY stressed about. Within a month she developed sibo. I'm certain cortisol and adrenals played a major part in that.
but why couldn't her body handle the stress ??? She was fine on a certain level and got sick on the next level because for the next level her body was not ready mentally and physically. Thats why people can out of a sudden function more with a change in diet. I experienced that myself. I am working at the airport 3 Shifts and I was crazy done. Changed my diet and it's just amazing. I am 42 and I never had that energy. So yes, Food is the answer. Metabolism. Dr Jordan Peterson and Dr Chris Palmer on mental and body health very interesting 🙂
I do think you are missing the whole point here. Red algae has been shown to reduce methane. As an additive to cow feed it has been highly effective. So, it could help many IBS-C sufferers.
My humble opinion is they should be growing hemp to feed cows. That has been shown to not ferment as much in their guts, and but most of all adding in the full spectrum of cannabis omegas, and other nutrients and health benefits that come from hemp. On top of being good for the cows, and in turn good for the people who ingest the cows and their milk. Growing hemp is also great for the environment and a fast growing low maintenance crop.
After spending thousands of dollars on different practitioners, I read Dr. Hyman’s handbook on IBS where he talked about SIBO and SIFO. I had my Dr. prescribe me the drugs (the neutoceuticals were too strong for my body) and just like that my problems were gone. The upkeep is a bit harder. You have to figure out why your gut/ intestines are not moving properly and causing the food to sit there and fester.
Have you tried any prokinetics? Lots of people have tried something called Motility pro, and it's just ginger root extract together with artichoke extract and that has really helped people get the small bowel moving.
I have 2 children with gut issues. Seen the GI and Naturopath. Tried changes in the diet. 14 years and ongoing. Never heard of SEBO. I feel sad for them, as it affects them physically and emotionally.

Dr Hyman -can you please talk about multivitamins - what combination of vitamins and minerals are safe to consume ? I’d love to hear your opinion on this. Thank you.
Just eat some liver. It has all the necessary vitamins in their natural and bioavailable form, fat and water soluble. Anything else is inferior because vitamins in pill form are made from petroleum.

I tried it and stopped them because it did just that. I’m so frustrated I just want to feel better.
Very fascinating talk on a very complex subject. I developed IBS in the mid 90’s. I was advised to go high fibre which made the problem much worse. Mine was caused by a mixture of high stress and food intolerance. In the end I sent a blood sample to a private lab here in the UK. They found I had mild intolerance to Brazil nuts, egg white, and garlick, but my main intolerance was to yeast which was a 4+ reaction being the strongest reaction that they had seen at that time. I modified my diet. No other treatment. The GP just said keep taking the Imodium! Eventually Imodium also made things much worse.
Doctors can check for celiac but fail to understand that one can NOT have Celiac but be GLUTEN INTOLERANT, stopping ALL GRAINS usually solves the problems.
@@Beajacks the diet modification helped but didn’t stop all of the problems. There are definite foods I have to stay clear of such as instant coffee, whereas filtered coffee is mostly fine. Unfortunately it really is self experimentation. Ideally do an exclusion diet and add back some foods gradually to check which one trigger you.
Great conversation. Regarding methanogens (33 min), there is a proposed evolutionary advantage since these organisms are a sink for hydrogen (high levels inhibit fermentation) reducing levels and allowing hydrogen-producing bacteria to continue fermenting, converting more carbs into fats which nourish us. In a nutrient-rich environment (Western diet), we end up with pathological levels of methane. But in paleolithic times, this might have been a desirable attribute.
@@DeirdreB-fu1qb Surviving in a calorie-deficient environment due to the availability of more fat calories from short-chain fatty acids produced by bacteria able to continue fermenting after toxic levels of hydrogen are removed by Archaea.

I showed this video to my doctor after struggling for the past two years with no positive results from anything else that I tried. My PCP decided to put me on Xifaxin and metronidazole. Four days after I started doing medication I felt terrible, but I thought it was from the die off. I finished both worship, and before I started. It’s been three weeks since I finish the medication and I am in terrible shape. The gas and bloating increased along with the pain in my stomach on the left side, and I am so weak at times I can barely walk. The inflammation is also affecting my eyesight and my ears. The most important part of all of this getting the engine moving again and everything else falls into place. So what jump starts the small intestines is artichoke extract and ginger extract. Once you use these two extracts you will feel your small intestines working again. Most doctors can’t figure it out so they throw you into a bucket called IBS….oh and thank you for your payment. Waste of money and time and they’re try to sell you in a colonoscopy that can’t even see anything in the small intestines or any micro organisms.

My functional medical doctor told me to eat fermented foods and to remember to take probiotics not pre-biotics while he was treating me for Sibo.. confused and wonder if I will recover
From what i know you NEED to repopulate with good bacteria immediately after the antibiotics. Basically take probiotics, eat healthy, exercise, sleep well. All of these things enhance good gut bacteria in the wake of an antibiotic cleansing. It takes a lot of effort to do all of that though but from what I understand its crucial post antibiotics
Dr. Mark Pimentel in one of of his videos was talking about Guar Gum (prebiotic, type of fibre that feeds the bacteria) and said this - "Fed bacteria are easier to kill. If you feeding the bacteria instead of being on one of those restrictive diets you have a higher chance to get rid of SIBO - because a bacteria who are starved are in hibernation, sometimes they form spores, sometimes they form specialised membranes to prevent themselves from dying while they wait for food." I have heard a similar statement elsewhere in relation to antibiotics, that varied diet increases their effectiveness... It may be worthwhile to first keep on feeding the bad bacteria with varied diet and some prebiotic while taking antibacterial treatment. Then, afterwards start working on healing gut lining (reducing inflammation & gut permeability), changing to clean diet (eliminate sugar, carbs, processed foods etc. to aid healing) while reintroducing good bacteria (adding probiotic & keeping up with prebiotic) - especially focusing on key-stone species and including polyphenols to help the good bacteria flourish. Just a theory...
Would a carnivore diet assist with SIBO's and IBS ? What is the best treatment for Methane SIBO? and moving dry stools stuck in there ? Why does alcohol calm the pain in the stomach and settle it down a bit? Is it that it reduces anxiety?
I measured methane in my stomach with Foodmarble Aire 2. Now I just need to find a gastroenterologist that has time to see me in my lifetime and wants to cure the root cause instead of killing me with a PPI. I'm thinking of going 107 miles to Mark Pimentel.

The thing that saved me back then was Thymol (Thyme Oil), Dr. Hyman. Here they extract it by VCO (virgin coconut oil), but I hear that Pau D'Arco, Grapefruit Seed Extract and Olive Leaf Extract are also beneficial for SIFO. Thymol cleared my H. It has helped a little but I now have food anxiety and am too scared to eat a wide variety of foods. I am going to buy this book and try a new GI doctor who may run more tests so I can get on with my life. Thankyou Dr Hyman. Please keep making these type of videos.

I disagree with Pimental about stress not causing sibo. My wife had been quite healthy up until a change to her job role and responsibilities which she became VERY stressed about. Within a month she developed sibo. I'm certain cortisol and adrenals played a major part in that.

Why on God's green earth would you give a cow seaweed. Jesus. Just feed them grass and stop giving them corn and chicken parts.
I do think you are missing the whole point here.
Red algae has been shown to reduce methane. As an additive to cow feed it has been highly effective. So, it could help many IBS-C sufferers.
@@nathanlowry3764 I get the point, I was just making another point. 😅
Absolutely. A ridiculous solution for a problem that doesn't exist.
Seaweed is part of a cows natural diet. Animals often live near water. Seaweed grows in water. Cows historically ate seaweed.
Did the diet modification help? I also have done a food intolerance test and it revealed wheat intolerance, but abstaining hasn't really helped.
@@Beajacks the diet modification helped but didn’t stop all of the problems. There are definite foods I have to stay clear of such as instant coffee, whereas filtered coffee is mostly fine.
How would it have been desirable?

Lactobacillus bites the dust it's in yoghurt , kefir, pickles sauerkraut etc 🙁
Nooooo but that's what they tell u to eat!!😢😢😢
How in the world do you feed the good bacteria and not the bad?
Do not contaminate your home made sauerkraut.
Dr. Mark Pimentel in one of of his videos was talking about Guar Gum (prebiotic, type of fibre that feeds the bacteria) and said this -
"Fed bacteria are easier to kill.
If you feeding the bacteria instead of being on one of those restrictive diets you have a higher chance to get rid of SIBO - because a bacteria who are starved are in hibernation, sometimes they form spores, sometimes they form specialised membranes to prevent themselves from dying while they wait for food."
I have heard a similar statement elsewhere in relation to antibiotics, that varied diet increases their effectiveness...
