The impact the gut has on the entire body should not be underestimated, but unfortunately in conventional medicine it often is. We are shuttling pounds and pounds of food into this tube we have called the digestive system several times a day and we don’t give it a second thought-it’s pretty crazy when you think about it. The gut is responsible for our ability to turn food into fuel; to absorb and even create certain nutrients; to rid the body of harmful toxins on a daily basis. We rely on it to do so much for us.
It’s also one of my favorite topics as a Functional Medicine doctor-poop, the microbiome, the gut-immune and gut-brain connections-there are so many angles we need to look at with gut health and they can tell us an amazing amount of information about the rest of the body. That’s why I’m so excited for this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, where I sit down with my friend and colleague Dr. Todd LePine to take a deeper look at digestive health and the fascinating collection of life forms we carry around inside and on us, called the microbiome.
This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by Joovv and Thrive Market.
Recently I shared with you that I’m really excited to be working out with a trainer. And while I’m loving these new workouts, I am not always loving feeling sore the next day. That’s why I’m so excited about a new tool I found that helps me recover faster, it’s a red light therapy device called Joovv. Red light therapy is a super gentle non-invasive treatment where a device with medical-grade LEDs delivers concentrated light to your skin and cells. It helps your body produce more cellular energy and reduce oxidative stress, which helps tired and damaged muscle tissue repair and regenerate faster. To check out the Joovv products for yourself head over to joovv.com/farmacy. Once you’re there, you’ll see a special bonus the Joovv team is giving away to my listeners. Use the code FARMACY at checkout. Make sure to also check out Joovv's website for some special holiday deals while supplies last!
Thrive Market has made it so easy for me to stay healthy, even with my intense travel schedule. Not only does Thrive offer 25 to 50% off all of my favorite brands, but they also give back. For every membership purchased, they give a membership to a family in need, and they make it easy to find the right membership for you and your family. You can choose from 1-month, 3-month, or 12-month plans. And right now, Thrive is offering all Doctor's Farmacy listeners a great deal, you’ll get up to $20 in shopping credit when you sign up, to spend on all your own favorite natural food, body, and household items. And any time you spend more than $49 you’ll get free carbon-neutral shipping. All you have to do is head over to thrivemarket.com/Hyman.

There is a huge disparity in access to this kind of care. Its rich people medicine. The testing is expensive and isn’t covered. The remedies are food vitamins and minerals which are less expensive then AMA pharmaceuticals. Most of the people who are exposed to toxins have lower income.
We need to close this gap as the actual care to fix or reverse these deadly issues will cost more state funds in the latter, then to create a pathway for all to get proper healing.

In my case losing half our income and top medical insurance was a blessing in disguise. It sobered me. I improved a fairly good homemade, diverse diet to same without gluten, processed, sugar and seed oils . It has been 4 months and I went from some pain to almost none , stopped losing hair, and am much more flexible. I get scheduled quality sleep, buy pasture raised organic eggs and ground beef, eat more fish and liver and about 8 cups of vegetables a day. I search for organics and quality oils on clearance. We grow some of our own food and carefully harvest some edibles for the forest....God is blessing. You can know him . Read the Book of John and don't get discouraged.

@@arvindraja9400 eggs can mean trouble - for SOME - others thrive on eggs. Depends on your microbiome, metabolism, and DNA.
Eggs are, I believe, the most bioavailable form of quality protein...again... can be just fine for many, but not all.
Eggs are on the list of possible troublemakers - foods that correlate with (especially) autoimmune type diseases, food sensitivities & allergies.
I believe the list of foods to eliminate completely from a diet, then add slowly back in one-at-a-time to find the food sensitivity 'culprits' for an individual, are: eggs; dairy; gluten; soy; fast foods & alcohol.
These are the 'usual suspects' to eliminate from an eating plan for an individual whose symptoms might correlate to being 'foodborne' - in an elimination diet. Cut them all out, keep a dietary/symptoms journal. If symptoms disappear, begin adding one of these at a time into the diet and record results.
If you are free from what might be food-related health symptoms and you enjoy eggs, by all means continue on. They are your best and cheapest source of bioavailable quality protein, DHA & EPA ( organic, pastured eggs, non-gmo, high quality grain fed)

I've had a functional med doc for years. I love the field. Only most don't believe in Yah or have faith in Scripture. There is a creator who created clean foods and unclean foods. Today we add all the toxins and process foods mixed in and we are a mess.
However Father still provides health and a way to overcome these issues/diseases. Through obedience to His word, instructions on How to live and love we will overcome. If Father made clean food? It's still clean today we just need His help to overcome the evil men do to destroy.
These two doctors are awesome. If they up their wisdom and education with believing in Yahuah thru His Son Yahusha, image how much more they will heal? Blessings friends

My youngest son had that gut brewery syndrome when he was about 10 or 11 years old. He had become lethargic and was constantly in a mental haze. This got him in trouble at school. Family doctor could not figure it out. Homeopathic doctor had us, check his blood and found low levels of alcohol. He was eating a loaf of French bread a day. We didn’t know that his body was addicted to turning that bread into alcohol. We took him off the bread products and other yeast forming products, and he had a massive migraine for three days, and then it was like he woke up in a brand new world. After two months off of bread, we allowed them to go back on bread Eating only reasonable amounts. He’s never had a problem since.

My sister just found your channel and was so amazed she sent it to me, knowing how much I have suffered and is still suffering with my gut; as a matter of fact my entire body. You are apparently two of the few doctors who knows what's going on. I had to quit my job, and spent many days in bed, after 2 years my gut is still a mess. I was going from one doctor to another, wasted all my savings and is still 1 step forward and at time 2 step backwards. Every day unbelieveable gas, blotting, skin issues, fatique, stress, skin issue, things crawling in my head There was a time I could barely stand due to burning and pins and needles, and all kinds of weird sensation; not to mention the vision problems that is directly related to my gut. You touched on many of my issues. Thank you and over to your website now.

Many years ago I attended a course in Brasilia (Brazilian capital). The course was with a Korean who studied in China. He had 3 College degrees; Architecture, Medicine and Law, which is weird.
He had been hired by the U.S. Army in Vietnam, during the war, as he was living there and had been trained in Homeopathy, Phytotherapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, etc...
As he couldn't speak Portuguese when he came to Brazil he dropped the idea of learning the use of all the thousands of different words for verbs, he would use ONE word only for verbs, for all persons, past, present, or future. He would use only the gerund. "I going", "they eating yesterday", "we traveling next year", etc.
He was brilliant and delivered a great lesson about the importance of a healthy gut and its importance. He said that it is more important to have proper bowel cleansing than to eat well.
He started walking on the stage and said, using an oversimplified/wrong use of our language, that would sound, in English, more or less like this:
"YOU WALKING SIDEWALK... YOU SEEING DOG POOP... YOU AFRAID STEPPING ON IT..., WALKING AROUND IT.
NOW YOU WALKING...CARRYING MUCH POOP BELLY... NOT KNOWING... NOT THINKING...
Then he looked at us in silence for a moment and added:
NOW ... I SAYING... NOW YOU THINKING".
From that day on I've never let my gut be constipated.
40 years forward... I have been eating organic for 15 years, average 2 meals a day, very healthy food. Over the last 2 years, I have been practicing Intermittent Fasting, with an 18-19 hours fasting window.
After 4 pm a fruit juice, no sugar, usually I add coconut, and/or oats, and/or toasted peanut powder, all prepared at home.
Later, around 7 to 9 pm, I enjoy a delicious healthy dinner, organic veggies from my garden, brown rice, bean/lentils, and/or other nutrient-dense food.
The result of my dinner digestion goes out of my body invariably the next morning.
On a side note: I have been a Lacto vegetarian since 1976, even eggs I dropped then. I consume a minimal amount of milk products, which are only some butter, cheese, and yogurt, and that is just for the taste, I do not consider them essential...
I am 71, BMI = 23 since I was 18, a lean, muscular body. My day is spent in my veganic kitchen garden, I have no pets, no TV, no fridge. I was a "corporate whore/engineer" for 18 years, then drop it, never worked 8 hours/day after that, and never had any boss as well. I left Brazil in 1990, traveled to 20 countries, lived from weeks to years in 8 of them.
I have been to the U.S. 4 times, nice people, horrible political system/government. I've lived in Germany for 21 years, a good political system/government, great roads, railways everywhere, great cars, no crimes, beautiful women, perfect universal healthcare system but... the people... only some 10% are nice.
This interview was brilliant, thanks, Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Todd LePine.

Suas palavras spoke straight to my heart (figuratively), all the way to the last word.... especially the last words, and you are right about the "...some 10% are nice"....I do know it! Have lived in France, Portugal, UK, Tunisia, and now in Germany since 2016. Although things here in Germany are not as shiny as you described (I guess things have changed like everywhere else) the percentage given to the "nice people" is also very generous but the gist of it all is correct. Continuação de muita saúde :)

@@realityperception8098 ... I guess you're right about Germany not been as nice as when I lived over there. I left Germany on Feb.2014, before the huge flow of immigrants from the M.E.
The "10% nice" people I referred to might be for the fact I lived most of the time in a flat situated in Hamburg's University area and I always had 2 rooms rented to cute and intelligent female College students. So, I guess you're right again.
Another fact I recall was that although Germany has ca. 4 million people of Turkish origin, I've never met even ONE who was a nice, reliable person.
On the other hand, I came to know 3 Iranians there who were very nice, polite and intelligent people.

      @santsuma 3 роки тому

@Dk Thanks man for your kind words. Concerning the fact that I dropped my career as an engineer mostly out of intuition when I was 41 yo. I realized later on that leaving the financial stability I had as a professional with a job brought another kind of wealth much more important than money. That was TIME and FREEDOM.
You know the saying; "time is money". That is a huge lie that has been pushed into everyone's subconscious and we believed it.
I came to realize, out of my own experience, that TIME is infinitely more important than money.
We have only so much time to live (average 80m years if one is lucky). We cannot "manufacture" time, we can only spend it. Money is something you can make, you can get rich, go bankrupt, get rich again...
The way I spend my time is so precious that I really want to extend this Earth journey as much as possible. I respect my body enough to take good care of my health and nutrition, I research/study these matters and I am doing great for my age.
Many financially wealthy people realize, at the end of their journey on Earth, that they missed something and if they could go back in time they would put less effort into making money and use their precious and limited time on Earth in a much more relevant way.
Nowadays I feel blessed every day. There is joy in all the simple things I do, gardening, feeding the birds, cooking dinner, splitting wood for my stove. I live in a very simple house, with no fridge, no TV, no washing machine... Everything I do is like meditation.

I can't get enough of watching this two super doctors, everything they say its so real, and the "doctors" we see can't figure out nothing.
I'll try to figure out if i can come to your clinic.
    Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦
Also i would much appreciate if someone recomended any similar doctor here in canada.

So true! A lot of times, when you improve your gut health, autoimmune symptoms also improve!
