I retired a year ago at age 54. I have shifted my focus from wealth to HEALTH. Dr Mark is my North Star. My diet and sleep routine has transformed and I’m feeling fantastic. Thank you Dr Mark!
Get sun in your eyes early in the morning. I do a short 1 mile walk before work in the morning. Turn off the screens a hour before bed. Dim the lights, create a sleep routine. No caffeine after noon. Turn thermostat down a few degrees. Stop eating a few hours before bed.
Dr Mark- You are Awesome! You are in your element! You speak while smiling always. You’re so high vibe! Thank you for all the information you share! 🙏💟💟💟
After a serious health issue in 2011, I can say your books have saved my life...literally! Thanks, Dr. Hyman! I will do what I can but as a caregiver, it's challenging to do most of these but I will give it a shot!
Magnesium Glycinate has made a big difference to my sleep. it has the added benefit of Glycine. I also use a small torch painted with red nail polish for late night bathroom visits. It gives just enough warm light to see my way around.
Truthfully, the more I learn about health just stresses me out more! I follow a few well known doctors and y'all have different view points on food. I don't know what to do at times. So frustrating!!!!!!!!!
Why wouldn't you go higher than 3 mg of melatonin? I'm 72, have been struggling with sleep for years, and started taking melatonin a couple of years ago. I started with 3 mg, no help at all, went to 5, helped for a couple of nights, started taking 10 a few months ago, game changer. From everything I read, we need at least 10 mg as we age, because we don't produce it anymore.
Not having hormone replacement therapy for 25 years was one more reason I don’t trust the conventional medical model. Struggled with insomnia for years being dependent on Ambian until FINALLY was offered estradiol and testosterone pellets. Sleeping 8-9 hours now without struggling. The Women’s Health Initiative inaccurate conclusions stating that estrogen caused breast cancer was debunked and caused millions of women to suffer needlessly.
@@MBT372 Have you tried different doses? Progesterone in bioidentical form only (not synthetic) and orally (not transdermally!!!) only starts having efficacy at 300 mg. Below that it’s basically a placebo. Too many providers are prescribe with old school erroneous beliefs: low dose for as short a time as possible, forgetting about efficacy. Critical sleep studies with hormones can be found on PubMed and Cochrane.
@ really? Maybe you’re not on the optimal dose? Other things can cause insomnia too. I cut out alcohol as well. I use a led light in the morning and get up and go to bed at the same time every day. Check out The Energy Blueprint. I took the Sleep course and had some improvements with that too. Hope you find some relief. Nothing is worse than chronic insomnia.
I have one primary criticism for you: what if our schedule requires us to be active at night and sleeping in the day? My work schedule for most days of the year is 3:20 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., with mandatory overtime following major sales sometimes lasting for more than a month. I basically go to sleep in the early afternoon between noon and 2 pm. Let's not forget those who work graveyard shift work from 11 pm to 7 am. How should we modify our lifestyle? Until we can find a job that goes from 9:00 to 5:00 what should we do in the meantime?
I am 47 years-old and every night after I turn off the lights and put my head against the pillow within 3-4 minutes I fall asleep without never waking up in the middle of the night and it is all attributed to OMAD .. I started doing OMAD ( One Meal A Day ) last year, and I could not believe how much it has improved my sleep..! I am not really sure the reasons why when I do OMAD I am able to fall asleep pretty fast but I would never go back to eating twice a day or three times a day now ..
I agree, it also helps with calorie reduction. Most people aren't even hungry eating 3 times a day. Don't eat as soon as you get up. Wait till you feel true hunger. Eat whole foods, stay away from white foods caffeine and sweets. Move more.
I know caffeine is supposed to be anathema, but I find coffee helps me sleep. It has a calming effect, so if I'm lying away feeling twitchy and restless, a cup of coffee is the only thing that settles me.
None of these are my problem, sleep is primordial. I had extreme concussion and have a weekly treatement with an Osteopathe whose expertise is in Cranio Sacral. All the tips that you give are second nature to me, but without the Craniosacral to undo the head trauma, I wouldn't be able to sleep. And some people need to go that extra mile, make sure that their Cranio-Sacral system is intact as it is an exceptionally gentle yet extremely powerful form of treatment, which engages with the deepest inherent healing forces within the body in order to enable integration of the whole body-mind and this will definately resolve any sleep disorder.
Thank you for all the information (again)! Please keep sharing. Unfortunately if I turn the wifi down in our house, there are still many wifirouters in the block where I live. Also unfortunately: sunshine is only available for approximately 100 days max a year and sometimex only for a few hours on those days. I would love to be able to walk in the sun on many more days Friendly greetings to everyone and stay healthy.
I agree, knowing and doing have always been my downfall in any health changes I have tried to make in the past. But recently I decided to pick just one tip/habit change and focus on that until it becomes habitual or as close as. The thing I am working on first is going outside and getting the early morning sun light. And doing it Before I touch any sort of device. I actually don’t even turn my kettle on. I’ve been doing this for almost 3 weeks and have only missed a few days here and there. I can honestly say that I am noticing a big difference in my mood and productivity during the day and I am falling asleep a lot easier. I’m still waking during the night but I’ll do more research into that and take on those tips soon. I just want to ensure I have this routine locked in first. I notoriously take on too many things at once and then get depressed when I fail so I’m peeling back to baby steps and only one of them at a time. The only other thing I have included and consider it to be one step is, I do not have a coffee until I have been awake for an hour and have had at least one glass of water. That’s why I said I don’t even turn on my kettle. I’m not sure if this last tip came from Dr Hyman or not but I am sure that it is adding to my success. On a side note I have named this little ritual “doing my sun salutations” and already my dog has registered that this is the new thing we do before her breakfast and now eagerly goes to our back door to wait for me. I think having her be so keen for it has really helped me stay on track 😊 the other important thing is that I don’t count it to the minute I check the wall clock before I go outside and I have been trying to estimate how long I have been and I check the clock when I come back in. The amount of time I spend outside at this point for me is not crucial it’s more of a curiosity because the only thing that’s important at this stage is that I actually got outside. All of the fine tuning can be worked on later. The only thing I am focusing on is getting outside and no coffee for one hour. I hope this is a little bit of encouragement for you.
Post-menopausal. Haven't slept well for years. I've heard most of this information before and follow much of it. If you have insomnia, I recommend skipping the scary stuff about what not sleeping does to mind and body. For me: Sleep hygiene isn’t the answer. Diet isn’t the answer either. I still do both though because I think they are the right things to do.
Dr. Hyman, There has to be a better way to communicate this information. You’re scaring the crap out of everyone…making us stressed and anxious about not sleeping…making it more difficult to get good sleep! 😳😟
My simple sleep routine? Nothing simple here Doc, way to much information, to fast, even listening a few times. Suppose we are to pick n choose what is best for our individual needs. Good information….misleading title. Nothing “simple” about this routine. Grab a notepad and pen!!
No melatonin for me 😅 Makes me feel lethargic no thanks
If you have insomnia, I recommend skipping the scary stuff about what not sleeping does to mind and body.
For me: Sleep hygiene isn’t the answer. Diet isn’t the answer either. I still do both though because I think they are the right things to do.
Pray do tell, O fount of all knowledge - What is the best way to improve one’s quality of sleep?
@ i should have specified- It isn’t the answer for me. I don’t know what the answer is for anyone else.
Dr. Hyman, There has to be a better way to communicate this information. You’re scaring the crap out of everyone…making us stressed and anxious about not sleeping…making it more difficult to get good sleep! 😳😟
Why do we get a side view of your face while speaking, odd
This man is beautiful!
Milk shake 😂
NOTHING new here. The knowledge has been around for years and years. Are you all living on the moon?
Please don’t talk so fast.
My simple sleep routine? Nothing simple here Doc, way to much information, to fast, even listening a few times. Suppose we are to pick n choose what is best for our individual needs. Ironically I am yawning typing this at 8pm! But only cuz I sleep like shit and am up every two hours to piss.
Good podcast with Tucker Carlson!
Preamble FAR too long. We’re not stupid to keep reiterating and reiterating. We get it, Doctor, we get it. Just get on with your message.
How about some time stamps???? jesus
