That opening with John Hannah was incredible. Everything he discusses is scientific fact and it was probably the scariest thing in this entire episode.
It’s also a very good way to explain what the virus is gonna look like for non players so people don’t go into this just thinking it’s another regular zombie apocalypse game, it’s a completely different ball game.
Well, the idea that global warming will cause the change because right now the fungus don't have a reason to survive in humans temperature don't completely make sense. I mean, there are plenty of reason now, the fungus can get into more places if it could live in higher temperature. But a mutation like that is probably more likely with global warming, at least a little bit. So it was better than most scientific mambo jambo. I'm not a biologist so maybe I'm wrong.

She really did. I knew it was coming and still teared up. The source material drew us in with something so raw and heart-wrenching, it's amazing to see the show follow the same formula. It's going to be one hell of a ride if they keep this up throughout the season...
I was dreading it the whole time because they were doing such a good job with making you care for Sarah. The closer we got to the moment, the bigger the knot in my throat
I knew it was coming and it almost made it worse because I thought maybe…maybe they don’t do this, and as it is the catalyst for Joel it’s such a heartbreaking moment if you have children
For Sarah’s death scene, the advice that the director gave Nico Parker (the actor who played Sarah) is to imagine she is experiencing the greatest pain imaginable. The advice he gave Pedro in acting the scene was exactly the same: imagine he is experiencing the greatest pain imaginable. They both nailed it 😭
its funny that you say that because when Troy Baker was doing the mocap for the game, when they were acting this scene, Troy was doing the same thing but the director kept feeling that Troys expressions were exaggerated and they were forced; the director had Troy do that scene probably close to 30 times and by the end of it, Troy was miserable, he didnt want to do it anymore, he was completely done with it, he was emotionally exhausted. The director asked Troy for one more take and despite not wanting to, Troy did it one more time and gave a stellar performance.

I've seen these kinds of scenarios play out on screen before. Sometimes the acting in those scenes is so two-dimensional, and shallow, that you just can't summon any emotional reaction to the tragedy. But in this case... the acting was superb! I don't even have any children, and I still got tore up by that scene! That's when you've got a real performance that's worthy of remembrance on your hands.
We've started with Sarah who's been there for her dad and to see her so scared and vulnerable when she found out what happened was so sad. Seeing her in her everyday life definitely made us feel like we've been with her ever since. Glad to see that added layer. The actress who played her killed it and our new Ellie too!!
Definitely adds a new layer. Can't believe this still makes me weak. After crying like a bitch when I seen her die on the video game so many years ago.
I love how they talked about cordyceps at the beginning and how the cordyceps is coming out of their mouth as they’re infected and that scene with the man on the wall with the cordyceps all over the wall, beautiful! That scene with Joel and Sarah was so heartbreaking 💔
I don't think I've seen Nikki cry that hard since The Red Wedding. That was brutal for sure. And that actress did such a good job, which made it that much harder to watch. Hang in there, Nikki!
Depeche Mode's Never Let Me Down Again (1987). A great song from a great band. All their songs are done through electronic synthesizers. Mostly anyway. But they are an iconic 80's band. Love them.
Having never played the game, I was sobbing at Sarah's death, then was totally blown away by the story so far. I can assure you this absolutely works. Damn what a start.
From everything non-spoiler that either reviews, or actors involved, have been saying, this is supposed to be the very slow pace intro stuff, and that the good stuff starts around chapter 3, so... just imagine how good this is going to get XD
I was super iffy about the show but Pedro’s performance when he loses his daughter at the beginning made me feel like the series is in good hands. That performance was Emmy worthy
Hi Nikki and Steven, I have never played the game. I went into this show knowing absolutely nothing about it and I thought it was fantastic. The actress who played Sarah pulled me right in and I immediately fell in love with her, having no clue she was gonna die. I was heartbroken. Bawled my eyes out. I am so excited about this show. It was great!
I don't have kids and the scene with Sarah hits me hard every time. It's even harder to watch with parents, they always put themselves in Joel's shoes and it hits them on a different level.
@@TheSuperNats I played the game 10 years ago as well. My daughter was 10 years old at the time and she was sleeping on my lap just like Sarah was in the show. When I got to her death scene I broke down hard and was trying to control my sobbing so I wouldn't wake up my daughter. It was intense 😔
Pedro does it again, seeing the images in my head of the game and watching the show, it was clear how similar they made important shots. Def one of the most faithful game adaptations that I’ve seen. If the rest of the show holds this standard, this’ll be a solidified masterpiece along with the game.
@bluebaconjake405 That's why almost every video game film has been shit. But now we're in an era where TV/streaming shows have budgets comparable to major movies, and are much more popular, and arguably better in general, we can get stuff like this. It's why I think the Fallout series will be good too, because it's being made by Amazon and they did the final 3 seasons of The Expanse and The Peripheral and their budget is insane
They shot the majority of this show in Calgary, AB, my home town. Cant help but feeling even more proud of how unreal this show is so far and how much everyone is loving it
I love that the truck scene looked just like the video game. I was fangirling hard this episode with how cool the live action version of everything looked! lol
I'm really impressed by the pilot, how great they seem to be balancing the familiar with the new stuff. Joel (Pedro Pascal) seems to be owning the role already and so does Ellie (Bella Ramsey). Also, the polar opposites between Sarah (Nico Parker) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) characters is so nicely juxtaposed in this series premiere where one fears killing while the other embraces it. The scene with Bella's character Ellie seeing how Joel just lunges towards the soldier and beats him to death, you can see in her eyes that's what she wants realizing she has to stick with him.
Watching Nikki cry has me heartbroken. Me and my girl watched this and we were on the verge of crying. This is one show for the history books. 100% rotten tomatoes for me.
‘Never Let Me Down Again’ by Depeche Mode in 1987. Not only was it an 80’s song (signaling danger) but the song’s theme itself was very dark - related to suicide. This was a fantastic episode (adaptation or no adaptation). Phenomenal 👏🏻
I think Sarah's death hit even harder in the show tbh, largely due to Pedro Pascal and Sarah's actress doing incredible work. I was shocked at how much it got me lol
That was one of the best episodes of live action TV I have seen in a minute, ESPECIALLY those first 30 minutes my god it felt so real and that absolute gut punch of a death. Even knowing it was coming I still got emotional because the performances were so incredible, so excited if they continue adapting it this well.
the "mind controlled ants" they were talking about in the beginning is a real thing, you can find videos on youtube and it really is like a zombie ant. super creepy. probably dont let nikki know that tho lol
We had our heart and soul crushed when playing the games yet here we all are ready to let the series do it all over again. You know it’s an amazing story if you are happy to let it crush you yet again.
When you think about it - as a parent or big brother/sister to someone, seeing that moment will never lose its intensity. Never. And I could tell with your reaction 😄
The song at the end is called ‘Never let me down again’ by Depeche Mode. It’s supposed to describe the plot of this episode. One of the best 80’s band ever.IMO❤
I like that they mentioned the Fungus that controls ants because it is a real thing and the Cordyceps fungus infection in the game is based on the fungus
Cordyceps is a real fungus , not based on anything but reality and it's this particular fungus (C) that affects bugs mostly ants but other fungus do the same thing on bigger bugs
@@virgildimitrion7658 one of my greatest fears is losing my memories when I get older so if thier is ever a zombie apocalypse or something similar where we lose our minds or even worse are forced to subject others to the same fate and I get infected I refuse to let myself do that to others I would off myself no hesitation and I don't doubt many others would probably do the same
I was like Nikki the entire episode. I'm not even a mom but every episode is making me cry like that. And while it's sad, that's how good this show is. 😭😭😭
The first half hour was hard...When you know what happens it is even harder. I love how they used the perspective from Sarah in the backseat! And that they kept some of the Game dialogue. This episode had me fangirling hard ngl :D Also I like how they delivered the information about the cordyceps that you usually learn through the game with this nice interview^^
I had no knowledge of the game series except that the girl's name is Ellie, and there is a guy with her. I also knew it was a zombie-ish Apocalypse but that's it. This was absolutely incredible. The scene with Sarah getting shot gave me chills. The imagery and acting was ridiculously good. I've seen videos on Twitter showing the scene from the game shared with the scene from the show, and it's SO GOOD. Really makes me want to play the games.
Best reaction channel on UA-cam. Love how respectful you two are. Thanks for keeping the videos spoiler free as well for those of us who havent played the game. Keep up the awesome work and being yourselves!!♡♡♡
Me too nikki, I was sobbing the second we saw that soldier. It went practically line for line and shot for shot and I knew I was about to get my heart ripped out.
Pedro, Nico, and Gabriel ABSOLUTELY knocked it out of the park with that scene! I've watched the game's scene so many times, but it never hurts less... and it just hits so much harder if you're a parent/caretaker 😭
On a second watch through I came to the conclusion Joel and Sara doged a huge bullet at the beginning. Sara could not make pancakes. Joel refused the biscuits being fed to Mrs. Adler claiming he's on a non carb keto diet. Joel forgot to get the birthday cake. Conclusion: The fungus spread through contaminated wheat.
Did you know humans have more in common with mushrooms than any other life on Earth? The largest living organism on the planet is a mushroom chain. There's tons of benefits of mushrooms and some are specific to certain functions. Agarikon for immunity, Cordeceps for energy, Lions Mane for brain health, etc. It's a very fascinating form of life.
As someone who does remember every little detail of the game, I was blown away with some scenes being almost exacty shot for shot from the game. This series has stayed more true to the source material than any other adaptation I’ve seen while making interesting changes that don’t deviate from the source material but enhance the experience of it 10/10 for this episode.
Fun fact - Sarah was played by Nico Parker who happens to be Thandie Newton's daughter. If unfamiliar, Thandie Newton is probably best known recently for playing the robot character Maeve in Westworld. BTW, I also thought that Nico was fantastic. She knocked it out of the park! Can't wait for episode two.
This was the most touching reaction ever. This show was quite an experieince and i cried just as much. As a father. the pain Nikki felt def was 100% accurate to what i had. This was played out to well and the acting was def on point ! Nikki thank you for always being the sweetheart you are ! and Steven thank you for always being there for her! You guys rock!!
Joel tackling a punching the guard is my favorite change from the game because for Joel to do that it means he has ptsd and my dad has ptsd and stuff and he told me he would do that to someone to save me and my sister.
imo her character doesn’t have video game ellie’s charm so farm, comes off more aggressive and unlike able than more soulful, reflective and charismatic ellie we know
The difference in the reactions of the two girls when Joel killed in front of them was a stark difference. Ellie, almost enjoyed it. someone was finally looking out for her and protecting her. Some of the subtle acting choices were mind-blowing. Getting some of the voice actors to come back for the series was a brilliant choice.
For the scene where Sarah got shot in the game, the director told Troy Baker (the actor playing Joel in the game) that he needed Joel to not just be a broken man, but rather to go through the stages of "what's happening, this happened, I can fix this, it's not working, I'm losing her, she's gone, I'm broken". Pedro absolutely nailed those emotions, especially when he yells for Tommy to help, showing his stage of "I can't fix this". Well done Pedro Pascal and well done Nico Parker as Sarah!
I wasn't expecting you guys to react to this, so imagine my surprise this morning (uk time) when this popped up in my notifications Also Bella as Ellie? Genius! Padro as Joel, Super genius! Sarah's death got me once again, but this time we got to know her more, so it made it ten times worse. I can't wait to episode 2! I hope you were okay, Nikki after watching sarah die again like that.
I swear...when Nikki cries the world cries. I know this game inside and out. I watched the premier and did not cry. As soon as Nikki even looks like she's gonna cry the waterworks start. But seriously, they did an AMAZING job adapting this to live action. I'm invested. And this was a great reaction. Looking forward to more.
I've never played the game so I went into the show basically blind, and I was really impressed so I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next. I also have to say that seeing Nikki cry always makes me cry. ♥
"Never Let Me Down Again" by Depeche Mode (I had that album in HS when it came out in 1987). Great reaction. Blown away by the intensity, casting, world building, etc. After concluding 2022 on a high note with Andor, we now have 8 more episodes of what is a great start for 2023.
Funny feeling Steven's right arm is getting a good workout this season. Also I have not played this game as I don't own a Playstation but I am loving what I am seeing so far. This show is amazing. I will be purchasing the PC version when it comes out in March on Steam
Not sure why this got me, but I teared up with the crowd panic, people running, some of them are zombies, people getting dragged, people fighting. Nothing else got me, mostly because I knew from the game what was coming.
One of the most underused zombie apocalypse scenarios is the chaos of when it's all starting to happen. Most zombie media is set in the aftermath after the apocalypse has happened.
Nikki sobbing during Sarah's death scene was absolutely me. I was SOBBING. I've never played the game because I never had a playstation but now after seeing the first 4 episodes, I'm excited to play it when it comes out on PC in March. ❤
I couldn’t hold back my tears during that scene. Even knowing it was going to happen after playing the game, it didn’t help me prepare to see it in live-action. Pedro and Bella are awesome for bringing Joel and Ellie to the screen.
I just wanted to drop in and say that it’s just so amazing to see how far your channel has come! Watching you open a gift bag from HBO I feel like a proud parent 🥹 So thrilled to see some of the best reactors getting the love you’ve earned! Congratulations Nikki and Steven!

If anything they made it heavier. 😭
1st video game that made me cry. I have one child a daughter. This pissed me off and made me want to kill anything that breathes her way
We've started with Sarah who's been there for her dad and to see her so scared and vulnerable when she found out what happened was so sad. Seeing her in her everyday life definitely made us feel like we've been with her ever since. Glad to see that added layer. The actress who played her killed it and our new Ellie too!!
The actress is actually Thandiwe Newton's daughter.
Definitely adds a new layer. Can't believe this still makes me weak. After crying like a bitch when I seen her die on the video game so many years ago.
Glad this is just a toon. Anyone give or take those orders is worthy of them and their family dieing from the same standard. A sprained ankle
@@paulhewes7333 Looks so much like her mother with that jawline.
Nikki has SO much empathy 🥺💛
I had to watch Sarah’s death in a couple bits because how clearly distraught she was and how much harder it made it all hit.
She's a mom so that's why. I got no kids but losing a kid must be the worst thing ever.
The young girl who played Sarah did an amazing job. She has so little screen time and she made such a great impact. Hope she gets more roles.
It was Depeche Mode for 80's...just for everyone's information. Wonderful 1st Episode. What a smooth adaptation.
I started singing as soon as I heard those first notes! DM never lets me down (again?)!
I love Depeche Mode it was so nice to hear it play I haven’t heard it since narcos
such a great choice for a song I started grinning as soon as I heard it
The song at the end was Depeche Mode ,Never let me down again, great first episode!! Awesome reaction!
Also great song and band. Check ‘em out, y’all.
Hang in there, Nikki!
have you seen her train to busan reaction? literal hysteria 😔😭
Oh god... and they didn't even get to Episode 3 yet... I don't think anyone was ready for that!
And her reaction for Jon Snow's death
Depeche Mode's Never Let Me Down Again (1987). A great song from a great band. All their songs are done through electronic synthesizers. Mostly anyway. But they are an iconic 80's band. Love them.
Having never played the game, I was sobbing at Sarah's death, then was totally blown away by the story so far. I can assure you this absolutely works. Damn what a start.
Nice!! Can't wait to see how it plays out
The Sarah scene gets me every bloody time!!
Yep, doesn’t matter who plays Sarah or what adaptation, it could be a freaking cartoon and I’m still gonna cry every time.
Not me
I never cried watching Sarah die
@@diegotm4365 OK

I don’t know how this show is going to maintain this level of quality for an entire series because this pilot was EPIC. I cannot wait to see more.
if they keep following exactly how the video game went then it will be fine
There are some non spoiler reviews of the entire season and by all accounts it only gets better.
It's the second season/second game that will divide everyone. Game and show alike. Loving every minute of it so far.
When I played the game 10 years ago I was soo sad, but now I have a daughter and one who looks like Sarah and this completely wrecked me
@@TheSuperNats feel hugged :(
@@TheSuperNats I played the game 10 years ago as well.
I'm so glad it was a series and not a movie, this was so well done.
i dont think it would be a great idea to cram 20 hours of storytelling into a movie format anyways
Like uncharted that film was trash 4 whole games crammed into 1 film
They shot the majority of this show in Calgary, AB, my home town. Cant help but feeling even more proud of how unreal this show is so far and how much everyone is loving it
As an Edmontonian I can't wait to see the Legislature building in the next episode.
This is the hardest I've seen Nikki cry. Goes to show how hard that scene hits.
I was already crying along with Nikki but when Steven comforted her it just sent me even more 😢 what a beautiful couple
‘Never Let Me Down Again’ by Depeche Mode in 1987. Not only was it an 80’s song (signaling danger) but the song’s theme itself was very dark - related to suicide.
This was a fantastic episode (adaptation or no adaptation). Phenomenal 👏🏻
The song is about drug addiction.
@@baaz12 hence, suicide... 😢
@@MrBreezeLI516 hence your reaching... lol
@@victorhuertas4685 thus, a treelimb lol
@@victorhuertas4685 super reaching. It's about David Gahan's addiction to heroin. Not a single lyric has anything to do with suicide or death.
I will always cry for the Sarah scene no matter what
The closing song was: Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
I think Sarah's death hit even harder in the show tbh, largely due to Pedro Pascal and Sarah's actress doing incredible work. I was shocked at how much it got me lol
That was one of the best episodes of live action TV I have seen in a minute, ESPECIALLY those first 30 minutes my god it felt so real and that absolute gut punch of a death. Even knowing it was coming I still got emotional because the performances were so incredible, so excited if they continue adapting it this well.
the "mind controlled ants" they were talking about in the beginning is a real thing, you can find videos on youtube and it really is like a zombie ant. super creepy. probably dont let nikki know that tho lol
yea the parasite basically making the insects zombies
I love Steven's "try not to cry" face
When Nikki said “I’m struggling”…it’s criminal how that resonated with me 😮💨
We had our heart and soul crushed when playing the games yet here we all are ready to let the series do it all over again.
FINALLY one who know Depeche Mode!! Best band ever! And what an ending DM gets in this first SUPER episode, very very nice! 😃
@@virgildimitrion7658 yeah but in terms of the story you're wrong
🤓
@@miketrujillo3677you mentioned based on reality , of course I know that the type of cordyceps that lead to pandemic in the game is not real ,🙄
@@virgildimitrion7658 one of my greatest fears is losing my memories when I get older so if thier is ever a zombie apocalypse or something similar where we lose our minds or even worse are forced to subject others to the same fate and I get infected I refuse to let myself do that to others I would off myself no hesitation and I don't doubt many others would probably do the same
That episode was fantastic. I've never seen a video game adaptation that was this good.
You must’ve not seen the recent Resident Evil tv show huh
@@alisonanderson4732 That's literally considered one of the worst major shows of 2022, it's a 4.1/10 on IMDB. And personally, it was pretty ass.
Say "sike!" right now.
Shoutout the multiple voice actors from the games getting to actually play their characters! SO COOLLL
that is awesome!!!
Only one person plays the same character (Marlene) in both the game and show.
@@JasonZakrajsek I read somewhere that the clickers are the same people who did the mocap for the game
@@Zacban Yep, and the same voices from the game
I was like Nikki the entire episode. I'm not even a mom but every episode is making me cry like that. And while it's sad, that's how good this show is. 😭😭😭
The first half hour was hard...When you know what happens it is even harder. I love how they used the perspective from Sarah in the backseat! And that they kept some of the Game dialogue. This episode had me fangirling hard ngl :D
Also I like how they delivered the information about the cordyceps that you usually learn through the game with this nice interview^^
You know they did good when Sarah still makes everyone cry
I had no knowledge of the game series except that the girl's name is Ellie, and there is a guy with her. I also knew it was a zombie-ish Apocalypse but that's it.
This was absolutely incredible. The scene with Sarah getting shot gave me chills. The imagery and acting was ridiculously good. I've seen videos on Twitter showing the scene from the game shared with the scene from the show, and it's SO GOOD.
Really makes me want to play the games.
the games are AMAZING!!!
The song was “Never Let Me Down Again” by Depeche Mode, but I can see why you’d think The Cure lol
I love how Steven comfort Nikki and he try not to cry too ❤
On a second watch through I came to the conclusion Joel and Sara doged a huge bullet at the beginning.
The song at the end of the episode is Depeche Mode ''never let me down again''. Loved the reaction!
30 minutes into the episode and we were all crying like babies
I'm gonna love this show as much as I loved both games.
Belle's counting down to "f*** you" scene was the moment I knew she was the right actress for Ellie. 👏👏👏👏👏
imo her character doesn’t have video game ellie’s charm so farm, comes off more aggressive and unlike able than more soulful, reflective and charismatic ellie we know
@@saherking2707 🤣 it’s the first episode
Her face might be tough to get used to, but her acting? Oh yeah. THAT'S Ellie!
I actually thought that was kind of a lamely generic way of introducing your “tough rebel kid” type character. The actress is really good, though.
@Saherking Nah I liked her a lot, she's a very accurate portrayal of a fourteen year old, lol 😭
Nico did an incredible job, despite playing this game a couple of times her death still made me cry.
I wasn't expecting you guys to react to this, so imagine my surprise this morning (uk time) when this popped up in my notifications
Also Bella as Ellie?
I want to give Nikki the BIGGEST hug!!!😩 I honestly knew it was going to break her but My God!!😭 ❤️❤️🙌🏼
Funny feeling Steven's right arm is getting a good workout this season.
Also I have not played this game as I don't own a Playstation but I am loving what I am seeing so far. This show is amazing.
I will be purchasing the PC version when it comes out in March on Steam
I'm so glad you guys are watching this! Huge fan of both games and eagerly looking forward to this now too! Stay strong Nikki!
Not sure why this got me, but I teared up with the crowd panic, people running, some of them are zombies, people getting dragged, people fighting.
Nothing else got me, mostly because I knew from the game what was coming.
it was all very well done
One of the most underused zombie apocalypse scenarios is the chaos of when it's all starting to happen. Most zombie media is set in the aftermath after the apocalypse has happened.
Nikki sobbing during Sarah's death scene was absolutely me. I was SOBBING. I've never played the game because I never had a playstation but now after seeing the first 4 episodes, I'm excited to play it when it comes out on PC in March. ❤
it’s glad to see i wasn’t the only one balling tears in this episode and beyond😅😭😭
I was right there with Nikki! Kept thinking of my son, and couldn't stop crying. Great reaction!💚🖤
I couldn’t hold back my tears during that scene. Even knowing it was going to happen after playing the game, it didn’t help me prepare to see it in live-action. Pedro and Bella are awesome for bringing Joel and Ellie to the screen.
that moment was done and performed so well
Played The Last of Us way back when I was single. Now, having a son and daughter, watching the first half of the episode killed me. Great addaptation!
I swear Nikki, those reactions are taking years off your life! Thank you for the sacrifice! 🤣
I just wanted to drop in and say that it’s just so amazing to see how far your channel has come! Watching you open a gift bag from HBO I feel like a proud parent 🥹
So thrilled to see some of the best reactors getting the love you’ve earned! Congratulations Nikki and Steven!
The changes they made WORK! It helps for new viewers, it helps round out and deepen the story, heightens your emotional investment. Really well done
yeah, nothing took you out of the moment of the story... excellent
I still remember playing part 1 in 2013 for the first time. I played together with a friend of mine. After the scene with Sarah we just starred in silence on the screen for god knows how many minutes.
And if you know the ending to part 1, this scene kicks even harder.
The opening to this and just the entire episode was so amazing. Last of Us was the best game I've ever played. And the episode was so much like the game!!
Best real reaction by far... You can feel Nikki's pain in those scenes with the kids. Ugh... can't wait to see more from you guys on this one.
The one thing I love about her playing Sarah is that she made us fall in love with her in the first 20 minutes of the Episode and set the pace for the rest of the season and she’s not here anymore. That’s so insane
