19:10 that subtle sound when the guard first spots them is exactly the same sound that you hear in the game when a mob or a guard spots you. Fucking awesome detail.
my favourite expansion this episode did, was actually a pretty tiny thing. When Sarah wakes up in the game and Joel isn't there, I think that we actually don't know why. Here we hear how Tommy got in a fight with a guy at the bar who randomly attacked a waitress and got arrested. It's such a minor change, yet it say sooo much. It gives us more context in 3 ways. First Tommy, he saw something bad happening and tried to help and do the right thing, his instinct is helping others even if he gets caught up in trouble (he even says "it's not my fault THIS TIME"). We even saw a "combat veteran" sticker on his car and since it's 2003 I could imagine, that as soon as 9/11 happened he went to the army to serve his country, which would fit into the idea of "his first instinct is to help". Second the Outbreak day, through the first part of this episode we felt like the outbreak comes closer and closer, they put so much focus on ticking watches and timers, to show us that time is running out. Even though it could be a normal dude, who was drunk af and attacked random people, I could also imagine, that this was one of the first infected people. And third the relationship between Tommy and Joel, Joel knows his brother and that he probably did the right thing. Of course he's annoyed anyway, who would want to bail his brother out of jail after a long day at work and after getting comfortable on the couch with his daughter. But Joel doesn't hesitate and does it anyway. They had a great relationship and let's us wonder what happened that they split up, when we're in 2023. It's such a little thing they changed at yet it gave us so much, I love that.
another part about ther relationship, they split up because (following your thread about tommy's character) tommy joined the fireflies. He probably saw their cause was a good one.
I texted my dad yesterday and told him to check this show out, he asked what it was about and I told him it was an adaption to one of my favorite video games. He immediately dismissed it, but at 10:00 last night he sent me a text saying "that show as pretty damn good, can't wait for next week".
Man, even if you know the Sarah scene is coming, the fact that it can still hit you in the feels is a sign of a good show. P.S: I didn't notice Calvin hiding at all lmao.
No matter how many times i have played the game, that scene hits hard like the first time I played the game. Watching it during a live show had me crying like baby.
Honestly already my favorite video game adaptation of all time. Even as just a TV pilot without any context of the game many people are calling this amazing.
Have you watched arcane? I know it’s not a direct adaptation since the game itself doesn’t contain the story but the lore does. I’m my eyes that’s still #1 video game adaptation
I'm really impressed by the pilot, how great they seem to be balancing the familiar with the new stuff. Joel (Pedro Pascal) seems to be owning the role already and so does Ellie (Bella Ramsey). Also, the polar opposites between Sarah (Nico Parker) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) characters is so nicely juxtaposed in this series premiere where one fears killing while the other embraces it. The scene with Bella's character Ellie seeing how Joel just lunges towards the soldier and beats him to death, you can see in her eyes that's what she wants realizing she has to stick with him.
See, it’s clear we watch the same UA-cam reactors… because I have seen you post some variation of that second paragraph on nearly every single reaction I’ve watched. Lol
Sarah is a child born before the outbreak and never had to deal with all that violence unfolding in front of her. Ellie was born in that world of the infection. She has already seen death and possibly can't imagine how the world use to be.
It seems like that Sarah scene is harder to watch for people that already know it's coming. Like a feeling of helplessness to something that you know is going to break your heart.
I broke down and cried at that scene. It rebroke me all over again. It always makes me cry when I play the game. It's the helplessness knowing what's coming and not being able to help or save her. IT GETS ME EVERY SINGLE TIME!
@@kellieanderson6274 i feel you!!! Every single time. Even tough I tried to shut it during the pilot, not possible. I ugly cried. Nico Parker did soo good! Lets be dramatic and emotional together!!!
the change i really like is the change that Joel is looking for Tommy, he's seemingly missing, whereas in the game they haven't talked for years. Joel really giving me the feeling of a protective older brother who will protect his lil bro even if his lil bro is kicking and screaming trying to get from his clutches cuz of everything big bro is dragging him along doing. And that's exactly what Joel is and i love that feeling. Tommy is the only feeling he has left, I enjoy that they make it clear that even if Tommy left, they still keep in contact to make sure the other is okay & it begs the question, what's happening with Tommy? is it just the game stuff or are they going to do something different with that?? Tommy in this is already one of my favorites.
yeah! instead of 'they drifted apart because of grief' it's 'this man is the only family i have so i'm going to look out for him' which is much more..humanizing as a reason for joel's actions. Gives me hope the tv show might change things for the better.
@@FireflyArc Wouldn't personally call it humanizing, but it does attempt to make Joel seem more likeable/redeemable in being a less detached person from the start. A fine line to continue walking since a big point to Joel's character is that he's supposed to be flawed in various ways.
it makes more sense than just wanting weapons, which were already laying everywhere up until that point in the game. its the only critique i have with the first game, that the reason why they decided to smuggle elli was pretty stupid
@@nilexinator5901 Yup. I noticed that some of the questionable motivations from the game have been fixed a bit, to be more believable. Makes me think a lot of Part 2 will be made to be a bit more grounded, and less "travel 1000 miles at the off chance you'll find someone."
@@lockekappa500 yeah. that one was pretty stupid aswell. it wasnt even just travel 1000 miles to maybe find someone. it was: travel 1000 miles through zombie, slaver and raider infested landscapes because of a rumor that somebody heard from someone that he maybe saw the dude.
Pedro has played part of the game! He said in an interview that he made it pretty far but got stuck at a certain area of the game and his nephews had to do it for him.
The first scene with John Hannah reminded me of the first scene in "I Am Legend", with the doctor in the news saying they discovered the cure for cancer.
@@rinshaolin94 *someone* is only just now realizing the game he nuts over for his protective daddy fantasy makes the hero a very capable, respectful, follower man and cant deal with the reality 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
the first 30 minutes of this show was absolutely perfect. Set the tone, the seriousness of the outbreak, and Sarah's death which sets the emotional characteristics of Joel. I didn't think Pedro was the BEST option to cast for Joel, but he did a great job in this episode and convinced me that he is great for the role.
The ending credits song is called Never Let Me Down Again by Depeche Mode, by favorite band ever . The song is about heroin addiction. I'm so happy that so many people are being exposed to their music 🤩
adaptations are used for this: to discover a universe, visual, musical or literary, to people who would never have entered it. Maybe they will become Depeche Mode fans!? 😁
Mine as well, one of the only musical acts that i will try to go see live when they tour. Sadly, their upcoming tour doesn't come to my area (Detroit) which is weird because they always sell out here. 😢
My only complaint is they cut the 'Sir, she's just a kid,' line from the soldier before shooting Sarah. I always thought that was a great moment. Gave the guy a bit more humanity/showed how fucked everything was. And showed the audience that the higher ups were going ham already. I just recall the first time playing, and hearing that line, it really heightened the scene.
It went more like “sir there’s a kid, but….. yes, sir.” I get what you’re saying tho. That small dialogue really shows that shit hit the fan, this soldier has no idea what’s going on and he’s simply following orders that he believes are for the better.
I’m definitely impressed on what I’ve seen so far in the first episode. The camera work, the faithfulness to the source material from the game, Merle Dandridge returning as Marlene from the first game, Anna Torv as a good choice to play Tess, and Bella Ramsey embracing Ellie’s personality from the game. Also, Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Jeffrey Pierce, who originally played Joel, Ellie, and Tommy, will be in the series later in the upcoming episodes as different characters. And Ashley Johnson will play Ellie’s late mother Anna.
Ashley has given birth to this character twice. Which is absolutely beautiful to see. I love that they are involving troy Ashley and Jefferey with different roles. It's so cool ❤️❤️❤️
I got my friend who’s never heard of the games to watch because she’s a huge Pedro Pascal fan and she’s hooked already after this episode if you’re curious about how non-game fans feel
This was possibly the best pilot episode to a series I’ve ever seen. A perfect start to the show and they’ve given me a lot of hope that they’ll do the game justice. 10/10
Im glad to watch a reaction from people who know the gameplay. Its cool to see new fans. But right now, sharing this experience with the fandom is emotionally and spiritually satisfying. The first episode was everything I hoped it would be. 10/10 so far. I hope the series continues this epicness. Love it :D
Man I didn’t think that they could make Sarah’s death sadder, but man did I cry buckets of tears. Kudos to Pedro, Nico, and Gabriel for their acting in that scene.
The scene when the skyscrapers are revealed by the lightning, that scene is from the game and there is a Clicker on one of the roofs you see in the flash of the lightning. The only thing they won’t be doing from the game is the spores, because it would make it necessary for the actors to be wearing gas masks too often. I so wish Gabriel Luna had gotten his Disney Plus Ghost Rider show, he’s so good.
they wont be doing the spores? that damn stupid if true Even in the games scenes with spores are like what 10% or less of the entire game. They couldve just saved it for a couple underground moments and to how Ellie being fine without a mask
Although too be fair, a scene of Ellie being infected by the tendrils (they confirmed that they will be replacing the spores with the tendrils that we saw in this ep) would be WAY scarier and more disturbing than just her inhaling spores and nothing happening. The tendrils would physically not do anything but it would have mental consequences and be more traumatic for the character, and for the veiwer who has to watch it.
@@benquadinaros5069 spores exist in real life, they are not unrealistic. Im sure they couldve done it easily in VFX or even practical effects. Breathing spores without a mask is how Joel finally beleieves that Ellie is immune and even says to Tommy "Ive seen her breath in enough spores to kill 10men". Ill try to be open minded and wait for these tendrils to show up.
Amazing first episode, Pedro Pascal absolutely nailing it as Joel... however I will remain cautiously optimistic about the show until we're a couple more episodes in but still 9/10 1st episode
The family said they took the old woman to the hospital to get medication I think that is where she got infected. And I like how Marline is played by the same person who played her in the game.
That is an ASSUMPTION Joel/Tommy are making. They have ZERO clue. The whole scene is for Sarah to FEAR she may be infected. The episode did give some clues as to the cause... Sarah wants to make birthday pancakes... there is no mix The neighbor offers biscuits, Joel lies about being on Atkins. (We know it is a lie because he drank OJ) The neighbor and Sarah bake cookies. Sarah wants chocolate chips, they are raisin and Sarah's face shows she isn't a fan of raisin cookies. She places them in her backpack instead of eating any. Joel forgets to bring home a birthday cake. The radio mentions there is a disturbance in Jakarta.... Guess where most of the world's flour is milled???
The game's composer, Gustavo Santaolalla (two-time academy award winner for Brokeback Mountain, Babel), returned to compose new music for the game. In addition, the music he composed for the show will be (and was) utilized in the show. David Fleming is also a composer on the show. I imagine that he'll handle some of the more action-y music.
I love the little details, just like when they encounter the soldier outside the wall it's the same sound that it happens in the game when there's an enemy nearby.
for the Sarah's death scene, I was like "I'll be fine I've played the game multiple times" and then shit hit me like a truck again. absolutely fantastic first episode. the stuff they added fills the whole story perfectly and the details from the game are mind blowing.
The pre-pandemic scenes were brilliant. Had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up and I played the game lol. They absolutely nailed how you just KNOW in your gut something isn't quite right but she was a kid, so a little slow on the uptake. Genius.
Pedro Pascal did an amazing job, and so did the rest of the cast! I haven't seen the gameplay, but I knew a few spoilers including the Sarah scene. I love how despite knowing what's going to happen, she still managed to make us cry. Brilliant acting, sad we aren't getting more from her actress!
It feels illegal to be this early. But I am so glad you guys loved this! Pedro Pascal is so perfect for this role, but the voice actors will be making guest appearances later in the show.
Amazing pilot episode! That car scene at the beginning as they tried to escape got me holding my breath. I felt like I was in the car with them! The casting is on point, and I can't wait to see your future reactions to this series.
I saw the comments about Calvin and fully thought he was hiding behind Ricks chair 😂. I even noticed the decor and thought ‘how thematic!’. Fool that I am.
This show did so good with recreating the feeling I had when playing the game, specifically before Joel’s daughter was shot and he was being chased by the infected guy, the feeling of them being right behind me and I wasn’t going fast enough was perfectly recreated
I genuinely think this could be the best video game adaptation of all time, this first episode was brilliant. I know we are only 1 episode in but i have high hopes for the rest of the show :)
@@thewingedone1172 I haven't actually seen arcane because I wanted to play the game first but just haven't got round to it yet, heard great things about arcane though :)
Pedro Pascal is such an actor, Oberyn Martell, Din Djarin and Joel Miller. So cool man. I hope he is getting payed the big bucks this 1st half of 2023 with all these roles.
Ever since I played this game when I was a kid I immediately said that would make a good movie. Years later it’s here as a series it’s sooo cool to see. So far so good, casting is great. 🔥
Pedro Pascal as Joel, Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Nico Parker as Sarah were my favorite performances in this episode. Especially Nico and Pedro killed it for me. With Mandalorian on the way as well, Pedro Pascal is my favorite mainstream actor currently. I think him as Joel is RDJ as Tony Stark level of casting right.
Man, the whole episode was good, but it's criminal how good that ending was. The editing, song choice, slow zoom on the game-accurate cityscape illuminated by lightning as infected sounds play... so good. Also, if an '80s song means code red on Bill and Frank's end, I think that broadcast may have been referring to what Joel discovers later on.
The "tall guy" epidemiologist is played by Christopher Heyerdahl. Very very good actor. I laughed out loud when Calvin mentioned his SGA role and then long hair hahaha. He's in soooo many good shows. You guys NEED to watch Stargate SG1 and Atlantis. Just needed to be said :D x Oh, has Calvin or any of you seen Sanctuary? Also a great series with a lot of familiar Vancouver faces.
In terms of the length of the episode, and the pacing, they mentioned on the HBO Last of Us podcast (hosted by Troy Baker with Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin as guests) that it was originally going to be two episodes, but by the end of what would have been episode 1 they hadn't got to Joel meeting Ellie yet, which is the central driver for the whole plot, so they decided to squeeze two episodes together (and no doubt had to make some cuts) so that the Joel/Ellie dynamic is in there right from the start.
This may very well be the best video game adaptation if it keeps up like it has. Of course it cannot be 1:1 but even where they deviate they keep the same aesthetic and just like spirit. I genuinely felt chills all while following Sarah just waiting for the flip.
Removing the spore spread of fungi for the show just makes sense. Firstly, yes it's overly strong and hard to defend why everyone wouldn't be infected after 20+ years of fungal spread. But secondly it would've forced the actors to spend possibly the majority of the movie masked up anytime there was "infected suspense" in play. It's primarily a visual medium and we as viewers need to see their faces as much as possible.
i watched this with my dad who knows nothing about the games and he fucking loved it and now we're gonna watch all the episodes together as they come out
Regarding Aaron's theory about the biscuits; ergot (specifically mentioned in that interview at the start) is actually a fungal infection in wheat, so it being in the flour is actually very feasible.
RIP Sarah. Still packs a punch. I also envy the people who didn't know that was coming. Also, that shit hit the fan scene was the best I've ever seen in this genre. Absolutely amazing.
i've been a fan of the games since i was 9 years old and i was sosososo amazed and impressed with the first episode and kept saying wow every few minutes !!! i also cried when i first heard the music with the opening credits lol
I showed this episode to my mom who knows absolutely nothing about the game, just to get an outsider's perspective. The first part of the episode had her entirely convinced Sarah was gonna be the main character of the series. Which I think is exactly what they were going for. I really loved how well it was executed.
I really thought this episode was pretty close to the source mateerial but also adding upon it especially with sara's scenes although they did change some stuff but the change could easily be an alternative. I thought the cast did very well in their roles. I think this show can be the standard on adapting video games.

I want to believe the ticking clocks and timers had an added layer for those who played the game: Sarah’s time is limited.
The "combat veteran" bumper sticker specifies Operation Desert Storm (1991), so he probably signed up right after high school.
@@Blazingstoke ah okay, I don't know shit about the US military, so thanks for the info!
another part about ther relationship, they split up because (following your thread about tommy's character) tommy joined the fireflies. He probably saw their cause was a good one.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this comment in another reaction
I texted my dad yesterday and told him to check this show out, he asked what it was about and I told him it was an adaption to one of my favorite video games. He immediately dismissed it, but at 10:00 last night he sent me a text saying "that show as pretty damn good, can't wait for next week".
Love the girl who play Sarah's acting
She is the real life daughter of Thandiwe Newton ( Maeve from Westword)
@@cedric13 nice
@@cedric13 Oh that makes sense! The whole time she was on screen, I kept thinking she looks like Thandiwe.
She's gonna grow up to be a top tier actress. I saw her in The Third Day and she blew me away
Yees she slaayed!! Got way too attached knowing whats to come for her
Man, even if you know the Sarah scene is coming, the fact that it can still hit you in the feels is a sign of a good show.
P.S: I didn't notice Calvin hiding at all lmao.
For real, I knew the scene was approaching and my heart started beating fast. It still caused me to tear up.
No matter how many times i have played the game, that scene hits hard like the first time I played the game. Watching it during a live show had me crying like baby.
And the fact that the show gave us more Sarah scenes which made her death to hit much harder than in the games 😭😭
1st video game that made me cry. I have only one daughter and will give my life up for her any day
_I sell hardcore drugs_
I’m so happy they used the game’s score. I mean how could they not really, but still, it’s so wonderful to have that.
Honestly already my favorite video game adaptation of all time. Even as just a TV pilot without any context of the game many people are calling this amazing.
Nice pfp bro. Taishar Manetheren!
You should listen to the podcast for the show with Troy baker it’s really interesting
See, it’s clear we watch the same UA-cam reactors… because I have seen you post some variation of that second paragraph on nearly every single reaction I’ve watched. Lol
Are they juxtaposed cause Sarah is black?
Indeed, I was very skeptical going into this, but I came out very happy. This is the first Hollywood “W” for adaptations in a while.

5:38 I just realize this is Joel's favorite movie and I remember that scene in tlou part 2 when Ellie talk about it 😢
the change i really like is the change that Joel is looking for Tommy, he's seemingly missing, whereas in the game they haven't talked for years.
Yeah he got to The Basement
The lady in the pawn shop is actually speaking straight up Arabic, I appreciate that 🙏🏻
The first scene with John Hannah reminded me of the first scene in "I Am Legend", with the doctor in the news saying they discovered the cure for cancer.

The song at the end is Never Let Me Down Again by Depeche Mode one of the greatest 80s/90s bands in history. Their discography is perfect.
I'm so happy this first episode was spot on and I love how they added some new things to add to story/lore to flesh it out it's amazing

the first 30 minutes of this show was absolutely perfect.
Is Depeche Mode not popular in US? I found it kinda strange that not even one of them could recognize Depeche Mode's style and voice.
The fact that none of them even knew right away that it was Depeche Mode- much less asking “is this 80’s?” Man, I don’t know what to say about that.
adaptations are used for this: to discover a universe, visual, musical or literary, to people who would never have entered it. Maybe they will become Depeche Mode fans!? 😁
@@somestuff7876 DM is one of the most successful muscial acts of all time, but their "most popular era" is before their time.
It went more like “sir there’s a kid, but….. yes, sir.”
I get what you’re saying tho. That small dialogue really shows that shit hit the fan, this soldier has no idea what’s going on and he’s simply following orders that he believes are for the better.
But they add "I'm sorry." Line
Holy shitballs, Calvin really gave me heart attack there 😂 What a jumpscare start, my poor heart 😂
I knew they were setting something up but I still didn't look at the background 😂
I think Gabriel Luna is perfect as Tommy, he even sounds like him. Can’t wait for the next episode.
Well... you have to wait.
Not many people noticed that Marlene (queen firefly) is played by the same actress in the show and the game.
Ellie is already killing it, she might not look like her but I can already see that little rascal in her acting, can't wait for ep 2
"Tommy, help me!" was such a great addition
This was possibly the best pilot episode to a series I’ve ever seen. A perfect start to the show and they’ve given me a lot of hope that they’ll do the game justice. 10/10
The Calvin reveal at 1:38 is one of the greatest moments in Blind Wave history. Besides that, I loved this first episode!
Im glad to watch a reaction from people who know the gameplay. Its cool to see new fans. But right now, sharing this experience with the fandom is emotionally and spiritually satisfying. The first episode was everything I hoped it would be. 10/10 so far. I hope the series continues this epicness. Love it :D
Honestly Texas could've been the whole episode! I was so into it!
Great adaptation so far!
Fantastic start it’s insane seeing them re-create some of the scenes from the game I can’t wait to see clickers
Calvin suddenly appearing as if from nowhere was gold “HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN-“ 😂
Man I didn’t think that they could make Sarah’s death sadder, but man did I cry buckets of tears.
I so wish Gabriel Luna had gotten his Disney Plus Ghost Rider show, he’s so good.
they wont be doing the spores? that damn stupid if true
Even in the games scenes with spores are like what 10% or less of the entire game.
@@overchipz they've changed spores to like these tendrils things that come out from their mouths
@@overchipz they've just replaced them with tendrils, spores would be too unrealistic in a show and too unpractical

Sarah wants to make birthday pancakes... there is no mix
The neighbor offers biscuits, Joel lies about being on Atkins. (We know it is a lie because he drank OJ)
The neighbor and Sarah bake cookies.
I love that they show Joel’s selfishness earlier on, it’s really good foreshadowing
I love the little details, just like when they encounter the soldier outside the wall it's the same sound that it happens in the game when there's an enemy nearby.
for the Sarah's death scene, I was like "I'll be fine I've played the game multiple times"
and then shit hit me like a truck again. absolutely fantastic first episode. the stuff they added fills the whole story perfectly and the details from the game are mind blowing.

The Last of Us Part 1 has one of my favorite stories in a game. I am really happy with Episode 1 of the HBO Max show. I can't wait for more episodes.
I been waiting all day for this ngl. Love your reactions
I was waiting so much for this reaction, as a big fan of the games and your channel, I hope to see your videos every week :)
Pedro Pascal is back at doing what he does best....BABYSITTING! 🙌
One episode in and already the best live action video game adaptation ever made.
Just needed to be said :D x
Oh, has Calvin or any of you seen Sanctuary? Also a great series with a lot of familiar Vancouver faces.
When Calvin came out of hiding I legit got a jump scare like my body took a screen shot😂😂
Evryones talking about pedro playing joel perfectly but damn tommys actor really nailed his voice, amazing, sounds almost identicle to the game.
Calvin was channeling his inner American Sniper while he was hiding lol.
I thought I was going to hear an American Hilda with Bella Ramsey, but it's immediately clear why she got the role. Her talent is amazing.
First episode is so good. Pedro made me cry with his performance. Such a great actor.
Only thing I was skeptical about at first was Marlene but she sold me. This is the best pilot since Watchmen imo. 10/10
Funny because she's literally the only actor who plays the exact same role in the show and in the game
Sarahs actress, Nico Parker, looks so much like her mother Thandiwe Newton (Maeve , Westworld). Awsome performance :)
i watched this with my dad who knows nothing about the games and he fucking loved it and now we're gonna watch all the episodes together as they come out
Regarding Aaron's theory about the biscuits; ergot (specifically mentioned in that interview at the start) is actually a fungal infection in wheat, so it being in the flour is actually very feasible.
Man Pascal made such a strong impression as Oberyn I'm glad he's gotten so much work
RIP Sarah. Still packs a punch. I also envy the people who didn't know that was coming.
Also, that shit hit the fan scene was the best I've ever seen in this genre. Absolutely amazing.
I liked this too much… even though I watched my roommate go through the gameplay… I got so invested and devastated at the same time…. I cried so much
i've been a fan of the games since i was 9 years old and i was sosososo amazed and impressed with the first episode and kept saying wow every few minutes !!! i also cried when i first heard the music with the opening credits lol
I knew that one scene was coming and it still made me sob so badly.
I like when the guard spotted Joel and them, it had the same sound que when you get spotted in game
I was fully crying at the scene. Way worse than in the game even tho I knew it was happening.
So masterfully done the whole intro part
