The game doesn't need to do much to make us care about Sarah since we start out by playing as her. The show had to replace that attachment by giving us more time through her perspective. Brilliant choice.
very good point
Same writer for the game did the show. Finally someone who gave a shit was put in charge of these.
I think starting and playing the game as Sarah forms an attachment. Both worked.
@@iamcool544 seriously🙄 i don’t understand how there can be so many adaptations where the adaptors straight up said they don’t even like the original material or even hate it🙄
@Soofiamaria yep. JJ I'm looking at you and Star Trek 🙄
“Yeah Sarah is a survivor dude” then the face he made after WAS GOLD
NO FR I DIED LAUGHING

@@Brad-lt2re hahah love
What I loved about your reaction was the fact that the guys who had played the game had already fallen silent and started to cry, and the guys who hadn’t were all nervous and asking questions. That’s how faithful it was.
literally my fav part of the viewing/reaction. Good to see awesome men wearing their hearts on their sleaves too!!!
Fun fact: the year was changed from 2013 to 2003 not to make the twenty years line up with 2023 but because 2003 was one of the hottest years on record worldwide, the perfect "trigger" for the fungi to evolve. It also makes more sense why Sarah would automatically ask about terrorists since 9/11 was only 2 years prior. Also, the city they mentioned on the radio has the largest flour mill in the world. At the beginning of the episode it shows Joel, Sarah and Tommy essentially dodging infection all day by NOT eating carbs .
Actually, 2002 was hotter than 2003, and every year since 2003 has been hotter than 2003 except 2004, 2008 and 2011. Agree with everything else you said though. :)
Notice how Ruff started crying @ 26:45 even before Sarah died? He was having sad flash backs, he knew what was coming and it was the same for most of us here, man.
yeah you can clearly see the tear come out
I was sobbing with ellie talking about the video game and my gf was like?? This is not even sad
@@luciuscabralzenardo2897 ngl it was way more sad in the game but the show did a good job too
The woman playing Marlene is the same actress that played Marlene from the game.
Some of the people who were from the game will have roles in the series.
Troy baker (the voice of Joel) will play James, David's henchman
And Ashley Johnson (voice of Ellie) will play Anna, Ellie's mom
@@gergopiroska5749 That is really awesome that this was spoiled ahead of time. Great to see Ashley as Ellie’s Mom most people figured that was the case from the trailers but great that its confirmed
@@gergopiroska5749 good to know. Ashley Johnson is very talented.
@@Alex-hj2jd Yeah she is
Altough it will be weird hearing Adult "Ellie" talking talking to the little one
Also the fungus sprouting out of their mouths is a disgusting touch to the Infected I didn’t know I wanted
Two other changes I noticed were that there are no spores and the infected are a lot more clumsy. Smart choices IMHO. In the game your supposed to kill hundreds of these, so Joel is practically a superhuman monster killing machine. Here he's more grounded and even a single infected is a massive threat, so they need to be nerfed. It also makes sense once the fungus is affecting their hosts' motor functions and doping their brains. And spore clouds would be just instant game-over for humanity.
@@elheber yeah I think the fact that the infected is so much more erratic is a great choice. Really shows that they’re being ‘puppeted’ and the fungus doesn’t actually have a sense of self preservation in terms of not injuring the host.
@@Vin_Venture896 it's only goal is to spread and reproduce so that's gonna be it's prerogative.
@@elheber yeah the spores thing i noticed was something a few people were bitching about but it absolutely makes sense to change in a TV show where you don't want your actors wearing gas masks for 99% of the runtime.
@@Doomfoolable and it also wouldn’t make sense that those spores aren’t absolutely everywhere. In a game it’s understandable that the are only some areas that are filled with spores but in real life they would be everywhere where there were infected and those fungus growths.
"Sarah's a survivor" my chest hurts I can't stop laughing.
Fun fact Joel, Sarah and Tommy only didn't get infected because they didn't eat the pancakes and bread. Also Sarah didn't eat the cookies of Ms Adler. If they ate any of that during the day they would be infected. Just like Sarah's classmate and the Adler's family
Me when I lie: Oh yeah, Sarah is a survivor dude.
😭
Just a good ole bit of trolling to keep your friends reactions pure lol
26:41 "...are you serious?..."
There's no doubt in my mind that my government would kill us without thinking twice when something like this happens. They would be more concerned with continuity of government than the people they are supposed to serve.
I mean, we see Joel not even willing to help another family because he’s protecting his own and not risking himself and his family, so we can extrapolate the same concept to the government. If they know that the infection was spreading so quickly then yeah of course they’d give orders to basically shoot, especially given the extra bit of Sarah being hurt. They wouldn’t know if Joel and Sarah weren’t lying.
The govt is treating this infection threat the exact same way Joel did.
"They want you dead but will settle for your submission"
-Michael Malice
"Sarag's survivor dude", he said that with a straight face lmao.
I have three daughters.. sarah’s death scene just hits me hard.
The only thing I hate about this show is that I can't binge watch the entire series in one sitting 🤣
i both love and hate that i cant binge it
Yeah like the netflix
frr netflix hav spoiled me wid dat
U and me both bud 🫤
@@bunnyban5365 if Netflix done this it would have been mediocre like witcher
In the beginning when Joel shows up with the truck you can hear the bone cracking for the old woman. That was her like hip breaking or something, just cause shes a zombie now doesnt mean she aint old lol
Also the dude with the words DEATH tattooed on his hands crying at Sarah's death is great. Show what the real masculinity is 💪
“Sarah’s a survivor, dude.”
You could cure all the cancers in the world during your lifetime and you’re STILL going to Hell for that! 😂😂😂
The actress who plays Marlene is actually the same one from the original game, fun fact
Is its insane how much the guy playing Tommy sounds like Tommy, the phonecall sounded identical to the game actor
I am happy that even I recognized how exact they made the adaptation.
This is like 10 times better than I was expecting.
That was a really great reaction. I loved the raw reaction of the two bottom guys who have not played the game. With the comparison of the top two who have played the game. Really great reaction, I am really disappointed that it is a weekly show. It was unreal that Neil Druckman kept the show so unchanged from the game not that much actually changed but a lot of stuff was added for TV reasons and to give back story so you can fall in love with Characters by just watching them survive instead of being able to play as them. That feat in itself is incredibly difficult I am so stoked for the next episode It is hard to sleep 😂 but here’s to next Sunday hahaha.
i think weekly show it's a smart choice, so every week people will talk about this show.
@@bloodyhellmanns I know but it hurts 😕
Honestly I don’t get too many likes on my UA-cam comments so this was refreshing for me, to know that my opinion and knowledge is appreciated.
I think 58 is my like record so that was smashed! thank you everyone who read my comment. I hope your upcoming is confident and bright. 💛💚
I love that the ones who have played the game are already crying even before we see Sarah is hit cause they know what's coming
Ruff started to cry before Sarah got shot haha
Oh I was holding it back the second they got in the truck
Ruff is the only Dad of the group right?
As someone who played the first game many many times, this first episode was phenomenal and has me excited for the rest. The characters, the dialogue, the set was so fucking close to the original game with some good scenes added and some wise changes. Loved it
I love how all of us turn in a survivalist mentality when we see this kind of series or movies and forget how normal life is (unless you are a psychopat of course). When we are kids our parents told us "go cheer your grandma, she is not feeling so well" and we don't have the fear that she will come sprinting triying to murder you, we not raise our guard and arm ourselves every time our neighbour needs help, we don't think "the cookies they gave me are deadly" we just eat them, dogs escape all the time and are annoying but we don't say "well, it's the end of the world I need to barricade my house and kill everyone who comes near me". The creator immerse us so well in this unreal world and take away our normality and control, that kind of tension it's more difficult to produce in a live show than in a videogame. Very well done.
“Do you think he’s portobello flavored?”
Please you can’t hit me with that 😂
I love Boom’s “we do a little bit of trolling” energy the whole time lmaooo
I love how the show shows the morning of the outbreak and like letting you follow Sarah through the day in the first part of the episode like how you play as Sarah during the night of the outbreak in the game
11:28 "she's got her hair slicked back already for speed, shit, she's ready to go!" PLS THAT'S SO FUNNY 😭
"OH yeah, Sara is a survivor" so wrong lol
Sarah a survivor 24:52 you evil man lololol
26:47 He starts crying:( I was like him also🥹😭
I just watched it back for a second time earlier with some buddies and man I didn’t even notice on that ending scene, there was a clicker on top of one of the left buildings. Such a nice touch and all the nostalgia music😩
Yes I love this! I really wanna see a group perspective who never played the game but are watching the show! You’re going experience wild ride, great story.
it was brilliant for them to set the show back in 2023, i mean i bet it saved them a bunch of money, they didn't even have to do any set dressing in Boston
comment from dude in the top left was a bit harsh @31:38. i’d like to go with no fear as well if it’s possible; yes the woman lied but it was to make his last moments pleasant.
Yes, I agree. A lot of people didn't seem to realize this (although this guy was the first reactor I saw get angry at the lady). Knowing what would happen, that was the best way she could offer the boy some comfort.
On a note aside, it's funny how they changed the dates from 2013/2033 to 2003/2023 just to set it up on this current year.
Great reaction. Good I wasn't the only one who got emotional, even though I knew it was coming.
The show really did a great job of changing things a bit to add more depth in the story setting, making certain things more of a mystery, yet also staying true to the sauce material. They did a crazy good job!
I love it when they stay true to the sauce!!
I had to watch it myself before I watched it here, and Sarah's death still annihilated me both times.
I always find it very ironic that Sarah was killed by the same kind of pragmatism that led to Joel leaving that family behind on the highway. The govt wasn’t gonna risk the infection spreading, and Joel wasn’t gonna risk the danger to his family.
Also this show is co-created and written by Craig Mazin who did the Chernobyl show for HBO, if anyone understands how to write tension and build up, it’s this guy.
And the actual creator of the game was heavily involved too. Imagine hiring people who know what they're doing when making shows and movies? Rather than hiring people who hate the source material or no nothing about it or care more about a surface level generic message. What a world that would be!
Just imagine how Joel feels, and then he has to throw a kid in a fire that was about the same size as his child, oh man I wouldn't be able to handle it
Sarah's death was perfectly done.
Thank you thank you thank you HBO
You are finally on time with this one. Waiting for next reaction
it hurts more when you've played the game and you're anticipating it. the guy on the upper left cried before sarah scene because he knew.. damn tlou
We had the same thought about the intro, I instantly thought of game of thrones. Then I realized it’s more an HBO thing. Cause Westworld arguably also has a very similar intro format
Yo really enjoyed watching this with you guys, great great reaction.
Loved your guys reaction. It’s cool that two of you have played the game and the other two haven’t. I’ve watched the gameplay many many times since I was 13 when it came out. I’m happy the show is good so far (:
Man, they did a great job in the 1st episode. I had so much anxiety as it happened and they managed to surprise me on how they expanded the story while keeping faithful to the original. I must also say after watching X's death like 10 years ago, and another time when it got remastered I still couldn't bare to watch this scene in live action.
Amazing Episode, Amazing Reaction - Joel & Sarah's scene is so heartbreaking - both in-game and now in live action - overall, a phenomenal episode!
Never played the game, only vaguely aware of the story.
Holy cr*. ... I'm a wreck
I already knew it was coming, but it didn’t hurt any less 🥲😭
I feel bad for thinking when Joel said leave the parents and that kid karma came back for his daughter
Sup ruff senpai, love that you’re covering this show too
"I like the dynamic they have goin' on"
*internal screaming in the top right corner*
Okay, I take it back. The reactions and commentary alone are very much worth it. I'm in
That was such a good episode!
The game starts in 2013 then skips 20 years to 2033
I heard the fun guy joke I chuckled
Love when people react to stuff and actually talk and not just gasp at stuff. Keep up the great work! Can't wait until next ep!
Hmm I mean everyone has a different reaction regardless if they played the game or not… but it shouldn’t be a surprise that people who didn’t play the game will be quiet and be too invested to properly react/talk. The start of the episode is way too good after all👀❤️
Lol can’t blame them
So apparently they're going with tendrils infecting folks in the series. Love that idea but I still believe we get a little spores. Bcuz in the first episode and previews we definitely got gas masks. The first episode was pure perfection. I wanted to see what they would keep the same or change and they didn't disappoint.
So for the scanning, it's the same as the game. The eye thing you're referring to is from I Am Legend, where they scan your eyes to see if you're infected because there was some kind of abnormality in your eye if you were infected.
What I find interesting though, is in the game the soldiers/ FEDRA were a lot more rough with people. If they found out you were infected, they would shoot you on site, there also wasn't many kids or even teens. The show paints a gentler side to FEDRA and I'm really interested what they're planning on doing with that. Like it's obvious that not all officers would do what she did; being kind and telling the kid he will have his favorite food, toys, and that he is safe while holding his hand before putting him down. So, Im wondering if this could be them showing that not all the people in FEDRA are evil or corrupt. Kinda like how the fire nation was portrayed in avatar, they were humanized.
"yeah sarahs a survivor dude" U WRONG FOR THAT😭
I didn’t think I would cry again 😢
Me neither, but props to Pedro and the actress playing Sarah. They absolutely killed that scene.
I felt like the scene was hella rushed personally
"Sarah's a survivor, dude" EVILLL
Love all the talking over the show, keep it up.
Thx for the reaction
Wahhhh? Boom and Ruff together?😂
“it’s a very game of thrones-y intro” i said the same thing only to look it up and see that it was in fact made by the got people 😂
Looking back now, I don’t know how long it took to get to KC but imagine if the resistance there happened around the start of this? So Fedra is extra stressed because they know they lost a city and the fireflies are ramping up
I watched this after watching Train to Busan. Now I’m even more paranoid because of that and I don’t what happens in the game
Lmao "jesus, that's crazy... where are the power rangers when you need them."
Just a heads up that it will be 9 episodes for this one!
My dude said Sarah's a survivor. I was dying when he said that.
This first season will have 9 episodes if it is renewed they will go higher in the next season to 10 episodes
52:30 Unless you work for the Resistance in Star Wars. Cuz you may not recognize them at first, but The Empire always comes back.
what do we have to do to get those two bros on the bottom to reaction-play the game!?! lets do it!!
This seems like it’s going to be a ride.
Yo I only live a couple hours from Austin, I wanna find all these places now (if they actually filmed here)
Off topic but I can't wait to see all non-gamers' reactions to the ending because it is so unique to the genre.
Raisin cookies generally are oatmeal; you don't need to say it.
Yo! I am from Wilmington NC! Where are you from? Can confirm we see daily airforce
It's nine episodes--originally scripted and shat as 10, but the first two were combined into this long premiere episode.
Last of Us part 1 is coming to PC in March
Not seeohknee bringing back the hodor trauma
all of the parts that were in austin was actually filmed in canada.
gaming detailed oriented!
My middle school was next to a airport and military base so every time at lunch we'd all see a jet or some type of other plane fly by
The leading questions to the two who haven't played the game are . . .
Not gonna lie but this first episode was fucking great it stayed true to the storyline yeah there is couple of changes here and there but you can actually see that it is a game adaptation unlike Uncharted which was a story totally on it's own at least they sticking as much to the game material as possible with this show judging on what I have seen so far there still 8 episodes to go.
Marlene the leader of the fireflies the actress on the show is the same voice and motion capture actress from the game
Idk if this is related, but in the scene where he asked about where she got the money from, and she said hardcore drugs, and now joel got drugs from him. Idk i think its a little coincidence that makes this show really shine
Man I miss Tess 🥺
27:00 Me too guys me too…
I know I am a year behind the reaction, but yeah, everyone that played the game was faked out by them ALMOST being t-boned by the truck at 23:47 because it's what happened in the game. Instead they trick everyone and make the plane engine randomly knock them over.
I think the game started in 2013 and then jumped to 2033
I beat the game 7 times on playstation and twice on PC and I never can get past this scene.
Game was based in 2013 during the stuff with Sarah and 2033 after the skip.
That cloud kinda looks like the uk
Ruff gets it.
I wish we could’ve seen more of Sarah.
Actually, I wonder how things would’ve been if Joel died instead of Sarah, I wonder how Sarah and Ellie would’ve gotten along?
A little late, but I wish the show parts had the sound up more.
