- Join us as we react to HBO's The Last of Us' very first episode, titled 'When You're Lost in the Darkness'
We have all long waited for this day to watch Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie as they cope with life in the QZ in Boston after the global collapse of society due to the Cordyceps virus, which is infamously known within the Last of Us universe.
Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have done a fantastic job at building and recreating this world from the original PS3 game. We got our first glimpse at the Infected, the Cordyceps virus, the Runners and even a tease to a Runner about to become a Clicker, fused to the wall - just like the game!
Nico Parker as Sarah completely steals the show and our hearts, as does Gabriel Luna as Tommy , who manages to somehow be incredibly unique yet sound exactly like the version in the game! Anna Torv manages to capture the wonderful vulnerability and badassness of Tess, and overall this adaptation managed to not only re-introduce us to this world, but also expand on it in ways that were refreshing, and in no way intrusive to the source material.

Ah man that line... When we tell you the desperation in his voice broke us, and still echoes in our minds and hearts... They did a fantastic job at balancing sticking to the IP verbatim but also adding new moments and changes! What an incredible show!!!
An absolute testament to the story and the acting that even though we knew what was coming, we still all cried.

I loved the game and have watched a lot of people's playthroughs too, got teary eyed almost every single time.
No different for the show, they did a great job on eps 1-2. My expectations were low going in, now they are very high lol

Hollywood gotta take notes. This is how you do an adaptation. The scenes 1:1 from the game. The CASTING. I was honestly not sold on bella as ellie until i heard her opening few lines. It almost feels like she perfectly captured the way ashley johnson sounded as ellie right down to how she swears. I can't gush enough about this. Next episode is going to be shorter but I'm SO READY.

Bella Ramsey was SPECTACULAR! Her first cussing moment where she said mother***** we were stunned at how she managed to capture Ellie's essence!! Just a few more hours to go for episode 2!!!
The changes they made, make so much sense in terms of the different medium. What works in a game might not work in tv or film and still they gave us the view through the window screen in the beginning. They really balanced this perfectly.

After seeing the first episode I've got the feeling HBO might have broken the curse of live action videogame adaptions :D Love how they rearranged some things and added some expansions on the characters without abandoning the source completely. And they still kept some of the memorable dialogues in
Absolutely loved that! We got emotional because of how much they respected. Like those moments where the dialogue were straight from the game. We also really appreciated the story expansion. Makes this whole show feel like a DLC haha we get to know these characters better than ever before ❤️😄

castlevania, edgerunners, arcana etc etc are broken the curse. so no The Last of us is not the first but is continuation of something great in videogames adaptations
Thanks for the comment! Just to clarify, we didn't really mention anything about the video game adaptation curse - that's an extremely outdated and out of touch term that seems to still be flung around by lots of critics. There have been plenty of video game adaptations that were either commercially or critically very successful, yet there is still somehow this trope being pushed. We absolutely do not agree with that. That being said there are definitely a lot of crappy adaptations as well, but finally there seems to be a respect and love growing for games. If the directors and producers love and respect the source material there is no earthly reason why it shouldn't be successful! Hope that clarifies things!
It’s not a curse it tv companies not sticking to the original basis of a games story while adding important story details which the last of us is doing perfectly so far hopefully any game adaptations from now on will take a page from this
HBO is the undisputed king of series, period. In my opinion. The Wire, Sopranos, TLoU, GoT. Need I go on?
I feel like Bella Ramsey is the new Ashley Johnson / Ellie. I mean that people will remember her as Ellie. She's so convincing! The scene near the end, in the rusty tunnels, where she never stops looking for Tess... that scene was so great in a directorial and performance way! ❤
Also, the look on Joel's face when Ellie stands up in the middle of the street while they are trying to be sneaky was great acting too. Someone mentioned that Ellie standing up was both for narrative purposes *and* as an inside joke for gamers. I like to think it's true. 😅

I did not play the game but I loved the show. The girl who played Sarah was PHENOMENAL! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. Watching how excited people who have played the game get over the music and wardrobe is so cute, lol.

I played the game, and damn did this show deliver. Honestly, THAT SCENE might hurt even more in the show than it did in the game. I was dreading it the whole time leading up to it, and then bawled when it happened. I'm not sure what's more heartbreaking. The Last of Us, or Arcane, cause they both hurt so much.
Oh my god yes!! We knew exactly what was coming yet still weren't prepared for how much it was going to hurt all over again! Both shows are just the kind that make you laugh, cry, rage - sometimes all at once!
I like that both Gabriel Luna and Craig Mazin played the game

It was an incredible experience in which I once more relived all those emotions: laughter, tears, and stress. It's one thing to play the game, and quite another to see the same story with real people. I can't express how grateful I am to the creators for delicately connecting all the plot line's dots and enriching them with extra details. I believed in the story, therefore emotions were true.
They kept the pivotal moments intact. Expanded on some lore for those who’ve played. And given us an incredible live action adaptation. This is how it’s done! ❤️

I didn't play the game but I can confirm that the way they introduce us to the story and the main plot was on point. I didn't cry watching the dead of Sarah but when I watched some reactions and the scene a couple of times, I cried, maybe I was in shock.
Anyway... I can't wait to see this story unfold and get to know Ellie and her relationship with Joel. If they deliver a relationship as strong as The Mandalorian with Grogu then I will consider it a success.

Honestly, the moment of Sarah's death is very shocking - especially if one doesn't know that that's what's going to happen, it's a very drastic thing that happens, as Sarah's introduced as a protagonist in this episode. I can imagine that that would leave someone in shock!
So far, we can gladly say that they've managed to be faithful and respectful of the source material, so we are superhopeful that they will nail the bond between Ellie and Joel! Thanks again for the awesome comment!
Just watched the first episode and I am spechless, the way them distinguished these zombies from "common flesh driven zombies" was incredible (scene of fungi coming out of old woman´s mouth, Im looking at ya!), the hell starting to get loose feeling was great, the radio in the end and the building was breath taking. Can´t wait for the next episodes!

I love the fact that because it’s the fungi behind the actions of the infected and why they do what they do. It pretty much explains why it doesn’t eat the victim (since they need the body) and all other changes that just make sense! Also tendrils instead of spores!? Hell yeah sign me in. We are so ready for this. We had goosebumps throughout the majority of this episode. After waiting so long we are happy to say it was definitely worth it! Hahaha had to put on the PlayStation outfit for this one! Thank you so much for watching with us 😃😄

I see this as its own thing. Sure, it's an adaptation of the game, but it doesn't have to be identical. All the actors are perfect. I know I shouldn't dwell on hateful comments... because they *are* indeed hateful; Why else would anyone criticize someone's gender, colour, and even *subjective* beauty. I'm writing this digressing stuff because I had no idea how sexist, racist and bigot *some* people were about this show until I read some comments.

Absolutely agree! As soon as we noticed they weren’t doing the car crash we were like wait…what now then? I love that they’re toying with the adaptation. They know what the gamers expect, how to surprise us, but also how to keep certain moments intact. Masterful 👏

I'm so glad you guys even checked out some of the extra content after the show. This episode is perfect! And the Sarah scene being pretty much 1 to 1 to the game is awesome. There's no other way to have that moment. But it almost beats the game because of the acting and the added context. Joel and Sarah got fleshed out a lot more before the outbreak, and when it happens, the helplessness in Joel's voice just makes it hurt 10 times worse. In a way I think it's very possible that scene almost beats the game scene. I was sobbing.

We honestly just needed more haha, and the episode was already 1hr and 20 minutes :D The way they've mirrored how Sarah's scene was done in the game (the camera movement, the despair, the grief..) was overwhelming in the best sense of the word! We owe Troy Baker so much for breaking our hearts in that moment, and they've done it all over again in this adaptation! I was lowkey balling haha, if you look at our video, you can see it took me a solid few minutes to pull myself out of it - that scene was utterly devastating!

I haven't played the game, but I'm enjoying the show so far. It's all filmed in my home province too, so I'm looking forward to seeing local landmarks. Downtown had many wrecked/moldy cars parked along one street for a few months that was cool to see up close. Of course, always enjoy seeing your reactions!

This episode was my introduction to The Last of Us. After watching 2 episodes I bought the game and started playing up to where the show was. I let the show be my first exposure to the story, catching up in-game after each episode. After the show ended (and my play-trough) I couldn't wait till season 2 to see the rest of the story so I bought and played part 2. I am now a huge Last of Us fan and I can't wait for season 2! Part 2 is one of my favorite game of all time.
An amazing depiction of the video game and I love how they're throwing in curve balls to surprise previous gamers, like showing the truck but not having it cause the crash or seeing Robert but not having the conflict with him. The show has immense reviews/ratings from a single episode, it's definitely going to be the hit of 2023 TV IMO
We agree! Absolutely love the fact that the players know what to expect but now know not to expect it exactly the same way. We both loved the small changes and addition of new information. After this first episode and the amount of people that watched it we hope this becomes HBO's next hit because the story deserves it!

I have massive game bias have to say cause tlou is special to me.. but i was also very aware of how the show would adapt etc and was open to it and tbh... I think the show did something incredible... it's utterly beautiful.... Harrowing af but stunning... These shows happen once in a lifetime.. I'm glad i was alive for this .. i really am.

i've watched quite a few reactions to this so far but until this one, i never noticed Sarah's tear that streams down her face after Joel and Tommy pass up that stranded family begging for help, it's only there for a second at 15:14 before the camera cuts away

A bit late, but I wanted to mention the scene with Nana, as described by the official podcast. She's depicted as being practically catatonic, unable to really hear or move on her own. The fungus, essentially, heals her, fixes her, while erasing everything that made her who she was. It's horrifying.
Tommy explained that he was breaking up a fight. I imagine he ran into an infected person at the bar.
Yeah! The little detail of how he just started “swinging” gave it away. What an awesome expansion 👏

A 64-year-old non-gamer of any kind who never returned after the 1st ep of The Walking Dead - I'm absolutely HOOKED - this show is fantastic!

I like a lot of the changes they did with the show, in my opinion it made even better the games and expanded in a lot of stuff. For example, the spores are not in this and they went with the original concept art before the spores called “the tendrils”. Realistically all the spores would be in the air so everyone would be dead, not just in some zones and anyway when they get out of the zones with the spores when they have their mask on in the games they would still have spores in the hair and clothes, it would be impossible so I love it this way more because it’s more realistic and TLOU is very grounded and realistic, so it makes more sense like this and also the tendrils makes the infected EVEN MORE creepy and show how all of them are connected so I love it.
And how the infection works. In the game it takes like two days to turn, in here like they showed in the scene with the little boy in the sign if you get bitten in the leg being the farthest part to the brain it takes a lot of hours or a day so it makes more sense, then torso, shoulders and hands, it takes some hours and then head it takes minutes and that makes it even more scarier, I love it.
Like even smaller change like the guy that shot Sarah saying “I’m sorry” is an improvement. It’s shows he is just following orders and didn’t wanted to do it. Amazing.
I love all the new scenes we got, everyone in the cast is perfect, and the scene after Joel, Ellie and Tess gets caught I love how Joel had PTSD, it made the scene more emotional and I liked it better in the show.

Yeees, to all of the above! You can tell how much love and respect was poured into this show, because the game itself is so beloved and so cinematic - it was such an incredible experience to see them make these changes and still capture the essence of the game. This is the best piece of proof we could ever need when it comes to game adaptations, that all it takes is care and respect, instead of trying to make it fit a mold or worse, turn it into a cash grab.
This episode was crafted masterfully, and we are honestly in love with all of it!

I've never played the game and I may have heard about it in passing, but this first episode was amazing. It's great story telling and even someone not familiar with it can be drawn in by the story and the characters. Feeling the connection to the characters through your reaction is so great. Even seeing the trailer for the season ahead and seeing the other actors that will come out in future episodes got me a little emotional. I think it was because as each one came on screen I could feel the familiarity of the character through your reactions. Thank you!

Absolutely heartbreaking. The performance and delivery of that scene had us emotional not only for the scene but because they respected such an important moment and gave us something that was a little different but had the same impact if not more now that we spent a full day with Sarah.

What a great start i loved it everything you've seen or had from the games still felt so similiar and emotional perfectly done👌 the beginning had convince me when scientist talking about how virus can multiply from small to bigger with bad consiquences and we just ignore them thats how it happend with these covid times
The warning from the scientist is absolutely chilling! We loved that the show opened up with a brief explanation of how this infection works. They kept all the important moments and then some! Added so much context in just the first episode we were truly mind blown. We are in for a treat!

It seems like the musical cues are heavily inspired by the game too. When the plane crashes, just as the debris hits the truck it sounds like the death sound from the game. And when that fedra soldier noticed Joel Tess and Ellie it sounds like the game version of getting spotted. Thank God they got the original composer. I like the little music Easter eggs

That’s one of the things we are most excluded about! The introduction of the story for those who did not play the games. Because honestly it’s just THAT GOOD! We were an emotional wreck in this episode. Half of the time we got emotional and the other half we were hyped. So many callbacks to the source material done so so right. I'm right there with you. I've played the entire game and I'm really happy with the choices they've made. They've given a context for people who haven't played the game and expanded the world and also kept us people who have played the game surprised.
They've done a great job at keeping certain cutscenes frame by frame and included important lines. I think the casting is perfect and they've kept character traits and development on point. I've loved this so far and I can't wait to see what they do next with the rest of the story.
An amazing start to the series! They did great. That car sequence was better than I could have ever imagined. They really went above and beyond to give us the experience we wanted and then some! The casting was on point as well. And after watching episode 2 we are completely confident in saying that. Thanks for watching!

Played both parts of The Last of Us (loved both of them, despite people hating on the 2nd part). When I heard they're making an adaptation, I was slightly excited but didn't want to hype myself up too much.
I've been waiting patiently, trying to avoid any articles about the series. I was a bit worried given the fact that game adaptations into television don't do well (except Arcane, for real now), but realizing that Neil is one of the directors/showrunners calmed me down a lot, he's a fucking genius. Then the other big thing happened, Craig as the other director, that's when my hype went up quite a lot.
Felt like the time went by pretty fast and I can't believe we're here, witnessing this masterpiece.
Now I'm watching this with 3 other friends that didn't play the games and I know for a fact that they will play it when it comes to PC, after watching the series.
Everything about the first episode was spot on, but I want to emphasize on the general atmosphere, how every building, every interior, every street and landscape really feels and looks like the game. They did a fucking great job and I was so emotional watching the first episode..

We were on the same boat - we're huge fans of both games (yes, both, the 2nd part is absolutely fantastic!) so we were really trying to manage our expectations. Video game adaptations overall have been such a letdown to the fans, so it's only natural to have some kind of hesitation when another one comes in. But, man, the way they've struck every story beat, the atmosphere as you've mentioned - it's impeccable, and honestly we are believers after this!
They said the fungus was in the flower and grains, notice how they didnt have pancakes, cake, biscuits, cookies or any other flower or grain products. They dodged so many bullets.
If you replay TLOU on the PS3, Joel's watch is not damaged during the confrontation with the military personnel. You can see it as he holds Sarah in his arms after she dies. The watch is not broken. In the PS4 remastered version, Joel's watch is broken.

Right!!! Also, the soldier never says 'I'm sorry' in the games - I love that they added that to the show, it adds such a tragic element to that moment!
Something I noticed in this show is that all the scenes and shots in the show are “mirrored” if you get what I mean. If you watch a side by side of the games, a lot of things are just switched to the other side. Like the barn burns on the right side of the road in the game but on the left side of the road in the show (that’s just one example).

6:01 NO! Sarah couldn't make pancakes because they didn't have pancake mix. They turned the biscuits, and they likely saved their lives, right there. Sarah didn't want any part of the raisin cookies Mrs. Adler made, and Joel forgot to purchase a birthday cake for them to eat later that day. Oh, Tommy didn't eat whatever it was that was in the Tupperware that he pulled out of the fridge either. We don't see what was in it, but he put it back after sniffing it--had it already gone bad? The food in the Tupperware aside, what's a common ingredient in the foods mentioned? Yeast or fungus!
10:33 This was a nice change. I don't recall explaining why Joel wasn't present when Sarah woke up--I haven't played the game since 2013, so maybe I forgot something, but this change clears that up for me.
