      Are you talking about songwriting or ability? If it's ability, I can remember when I was younger thinking "there's no way I'm going to be able to play 'Rust in Peace...Polaris'"...and then one day I did. If it makes you feel any better, try to come to terms with the idea that not even Tosin Abasi or John Petrucci are perfect guitarists; Chris Broderick said in an interview that there are tons of things to always be learning on the guitar, and that since there's so many he has to prioritize greatly. He's right.

    One thing that always impresses me with animals as leaders isn't just the music per se, but the production behind them. The production itself is a masterpiece with all the little background guitars, tones, alien soundscapes and glitches. There's a masterpiece underneath this masterpiece just layering. It'd be impossible to not be this badass with that amount of awesome production and sense of what needs to be there even if its barely audible. It's fun to listen to just the background of animals as leaders songs too. This song has like underlying invader zim vibes being layered with awesome atmospheres and classical vibe.

      jollyjollyO The only thing that's CGI is the very simply done soundwave visualizations, the rest is literally just swirl dyed liquid filmed with either a water proof camera or through a clear container. Not very hard to reproduce but simply visually appealing.

    This was by far my favorite album of 2014. JFAC's upcoming Sun Eater looks like it'll be beast as well, sad thing is, AAL always falls under the radar during the votes for album of the year, which is a fucking shame.
    I honestly think this is their best work. The first album was great, but the drum tracks sounded raped once in a while. Weightless was so disappointing for me, I love AAL but it felt like a Tosin Abasi solo album - no melody, just complicated techniques meshed together. This album really swerved away from that. I hope this band goes on to become legendary.

    • @mikepostdrums
      @mikepostdrums 10 років тому +1

      Sid P I agree. This is their best work by far. I was completely blown away by the debut at the time. Weightless was a disappointment for me. But this.. this is fantastic. Matt Garstka is the shit, and both Tosin and Javier have grown so much. Oh, and THAT BASS.. thanks Nolly!

    • @AstroTorch
      @AstroTorch 9 років тому +1

      Ah, prog metal is a niche subgenre in an already niche genre (metal). So I don't think it's unreasonable for AAL to largely unrecognized by metal hammer & the like. Much the same way I don't expect chart music media to be recognising metal in general. That's my take on it anyway.

    • @gottapee5
      @gottapee5 9 років тому +1

      meh weightless was the album i first heard by them. as soon as i heard that thumb slapped into to an infinite regression i was immediately hooked and thought they had one of the coolest sounds i've ever heard. fucking real. so awesome. joy of motion exceeded my expectations by worlds... love these guys

    • @76madhur
      @76madhur 9 років тому

      ***** Actually there's no Matt Halpern on the first album. It is all programmed drums (which Misha was a part of, so that might explain why you thought it was Halpern) . Sounds very realistic though. Matt Halpern has never played on any AAL albums. In fact Navene's drumming is only heard on weightless.

      "The right hemisphere is mainly in charge of spatial abilities, face recognition and processing music. It performs some math, but only rough estimations and comparisons. The brain's right side also helps us to comprehend visual imagery and make sense of what we see. It plays a role in language, particularly in interpreting context and a person's tone."

      the more you learn theory the more you can appreciate weightless. And tosins music in general. Weightless was just pure musical genius. And this album so far is great.

    • @KaraethonOfficial
      @KaraethonOfficial 10 років тому +2

      ***** I don't particularly think knowing theory has anything to do with it as I know zero theory but love music that is clearly theory-driven, I just think it was my opinion at the time. I have since listened to Weightless again and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Somnarium is probably my favourite track :)

    • @TLMstories
      @TLMstories 10 років тому +2

      Arran Cook As Tosin said, Theory really helps. If you don't play an Instrument, I understand that you don't know any but if you do, I highly recommend learning musical theory.

    • @joshuaalexander7313
      @joshuaalexander7313 10 років тому

      ***** I've taken six years of theory formally & had jazz instruction (i'm a drummer) for two now (on my way to Berklee hopefully) & I think Weightless was the most disappointing record of my entire life to hear, coming off the heels of the inspiring, groundbreaking self-titled album. It lacked greatly the same melodic feel of the self-titled, had no guitar / drum parts that blew me away (see: CAFO, Song of Solomon, Thoroughly @ Home, etc.), the production was bland compared to the lush, organic atmosphere of the self-titled, & I honestly couldn't tell the difference between most of the songs still after ten or more full listens (whereas in the debut, each song inhabited its own world of sound & was instantly recognizable).
      It's really interesting to see someone arrive at such an opposite conclusion I did - especially someone also into the technical / theoretical constructs of music. (Not coming at you aggressively - just surprised by yours - and others - passionate praise of the album).

    • @KaraethonOfficial
      @KaraethonOfficial 10 років тому +3

      I think the more theory you know, the more you can appreciate the theory. I don't think the amount of theory you know affects personal music tastes.

    This song is the biggest grower out of all on the album for me. Thought it was pretty lackluster when i first heard it, but the more you listen the more layers you notice. The video enhances the song so well too.

    A good idea when making this music video is that instead of using just water, milk, coloring and washing up liquid.
    They should've added some sparkling water. Im sure that would've made some cool patterns.

    • @ryanbyrnes8085
      @ryanbyrnes8085 10 років тому +3

      ordnas chira I'm a fan of Animals As Leaders and I also enjoy the theory aspects of their music, so I think your comment is rather immature. I'm not a crappy fan and not everyone here is a bunch of crappy fans. That's an ad hominem, which is a logical fallacy. You're entitled to like Celine Dion's music, but to say you would rather just listen and not think about it is stupid. You should always want to learn and engage yourself in critical thinking, because with those qualities you can become whatever you want and get a great job (which is the beauty of living in America). I understand that a lot of people on the internet are immature, judgmental and illiterate, but that is just the result of poor education system we have here in America and bad parenting. If you don't understand how to explain what you mean that's fine (because your last two sentences are nonsensical), but if you are just saying your opinion and you don't want to explain it then everyone is going to think that you are an asshole. And by your last three words, I can tell you don't want people thinking of you that way.

Howto: 1. put some milk in a shallow container 2. put drops of food coloring into the milk 3. add a drop of dishwasing liquid into a spot of food coloring floating on the milk 4. enjoy the reaction! For awesome visual effects feel free to add drops of dishwashing liquid to various places in the container.

      I was judging by sound, not by its fans. Most of it sounds like really technical metalcore/nu-metal.
      In fact, now that I listen a little closer, AAL is more progressive metal than they are djent. They have djent influences in their sound, but other than that, they're prog metal. My mistake.
