Can't believe it's been over 7 years. This album changed the game, don't think there's been an album in djent prog that has affected the scene as much as this since. That's your cue to argue with me, so I can discover more great albums on this level.
Uneven Structure back in 2011-2013 had some absolutely astonishing and beautiful music, the album Februus and its sound can change a man, and yet they have some of the most underrated albums I've seen. If you want to listen to them, try starting with Februus and listen from start to finish, than listen to La Partition. My favorite songs from them personally are Our Embrace, Lover, and Quittance.
I listen to this band and after every song I just look over at my guitars and think, "why cant you do that?" Also, this bands guitar player (the one with the glasses) has probably the best form I've ever seen. When I saw them live I was just entranced by his playing.

If you're here for "br00tal breakdowns" and "no clean vocals" you're in the wrong place. The Contortionist is not a deathcore band. They are a progressive band and each album shows that. There's something about this band that pleases pretty much everything I enjoy musically.
JohnC546 A good friend of mine is mostly in to that stuff, and he kept telling me about two bands - Born of Osiris and The Contortionist. I listened to Born of Osiris and hated it, told him we just didn't like the same kind of music. Fast forward about 6 months and this very song played on my Pandora while I was working. When I checked the name I did two things - buy every contortionist album and apologize to my buddy.

Besides the amazing track, there is some serious artistic focus on this video! It looks beautifully smooth and post-music-ish. It kind of makes me think of Tycho. I have no doubts this album will be absolute perfection.
The industry isn't built for artists. It's not the place they go, nor would they care to. The industry is fine, for people who are casual music listeners. Nobody owes anybody else anything, except parents to their children.
this CD has been a part of my spiritual journey recently. the more you experience in life the more these songs make sense. I've listened to this CD like 20 times through and through each with a different realization
I am the rare Contortionist fan that loves every album they have put out. They all shred in their own different creative ways. Seriously, they have given us metalheads a huge range of music within 4 albums and now it seems they are expanding the genre itself. Much respect and love. Language is incredible and I really hope I get to see it live.
I only discovered The Contortionist this because I saw they were going on tour with Periphery. I got the albums, and I am also one of those fans, and would go as far to say as they are one of the first bands that comes to mind when asked if I have a favorite band. Although I love Periphery, these guys stole the show on that tour.
Saw them at Summer Slaughter.... My life has never been the same.... And now, my life has been changed again.. If I could wear a jacket of goosebumps, this would be the reason being.....
This is perhaps one of the best progressive songs ever recorded. The video is pretty awesome too. Don't feel bad if you it took you awhile to discover this band, I did too. Music is about the journey, not the destination. Myself, I'm purposely avoiding BTBAM just so that one day I'll enormously and thoroughly enjoy their catalog....you know, save the best for last. With some help from my brother, I come back with some recommendations. Forgive me if I mention obvious one's that you've already discovered. Animals as Leaders, Haken, and The Faceless are good places to start. And actually The Contortionist fits this too, they tend to be a bit heavier than this song on average.
i actually knew all of them already, good examples tho! If you like some more death metal heavy, Ne Obliviscaris are a new one i discovered. Also if you like periphery (you gotta know them!), check out Monuments, Veil of Maya or Karnivool. And for more chill stuff, Tesseract
Groove heavy. Darker tones. Production quality is phenomenal, given the kind of music. Composition is stellar, even with the off time beats...they aren't overpowering and really tasteful. And the soothing, lower registered singing has been lacking in this genre (and many rock acts, myself included). It all has a "consolidated epic" kind of sensibility. I dig it.
Leryan Burrey That's my favorite part about this band, hands down. They don't let the complexity of the music overtake the emotion, the melodies, or that "alive" feeling that this song bestows upon the listener. I absolutely love it
Lol I was never really a huge fan of Linkin Park. More of a Korn guy. But this band has changed my musical taste. I was going to see them live with TesseracT on Sunday and I waited until the day of to get tickets and it was sold out. Always next time.
Linkin Park is still good. Pearl Jam is still good. Disturbed kinda sucks. Alice in Chains is still amazing. The Contortionist is awesome and unique. Everyone is still the shit.
Very rarely am I utterly captivated by a mere music video. This illustrates that rarity quite nicely. The chills descending down my spine, assuaging my essence, are more than ethereal.
The only other bands that can do to me what this just did to me would be Dir en grey and Plini. These guys are improving with age. Clearly they're very intelligent for a bunch of darn kids....
Jimbabwe Arnold Plini has music videos? His playthroughs are nice but I don't know about them being as captivating as this. Same goes for DeG. I mean, obscure just grabs you but the rest of their videos aren't that captivating
You know a band is unique when they keep their distinct sound even with a new vocalist. The Contortionist is truly one of a kind and this album is shaping up to be magnificent.
This band has really had an amazing transformation. From an intriguing but slightly generic deathcore band to an avante-garde prog-metal band pushing the limits of the genre...can't wait for this album to drop.
For me The Contortionist is one of the flawless bands of this generation, each album is different but equally superb. Crossing genres at will but never losing their identity, even on this track I can hear echos of Exoplanet. Can't wait for this album to come out.

Apart from this song being an absolute masterpiece, I also love how you can actually see how they enjoy playing it. These genuine smiles tell you they don't want to show off or pose as the great musicians they are, but they just love playing the music and appreciate how it all comes together as art. I don't know why I wrote this, but it just seems like a very unique thing for a music video.

Yesterday, I went to see Tesseract in NY. There were 4 bands playing. The Contortionist were the best by FAR and in every possible way. Excellent performance, excellent sound... everything simply excellent. 10/10 to me. The best live show I've ever seen. ... And I've seen Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Iron Maiden and you know, a bunch of these "heavy weights" in the rock/metal world.

Intrinsic, which I thought was a better album than Exoplanet, is one of my favorite metal albums, period. This album sounds like it's going to be EXCELLENT.
I agree. Exoplanet has its moments, but I can find something I love in every song off of Intrinsic. They become more and more musical each album. I love the skills they have with dynamics. Man. :D

kitramsey5150 The nice thing is that it's music. Our subjective feelings don't need to agree. I have Intrinsic on my top 20 all time metal albums. Many wouldn't. To me, it's superior in almost every way. Much more dynamic. It encouraged me (an 11 year player) to write things that I had not before.
Their first album is still one of my favorites. Truly wasn't a huge fan of the second album, but this song is very beautiful, well written, and I really look forward to the release of this album.
Ryan Wilkerson Didn't say it didn't have any good songs. Also perhaps my expectation of the CD was a little too high and also was expecting something different. I am all for bands changing their sound and evolving which they did on Intrinsic, but I just found it harder to enjoy from start to finish whereas with Exoplanet, just every song is spectacular (in my opinion of course).

Apart from this song being an absolute masterpiece, I also love how you can actually see how they enjoy playing it. These genuine smiles tell you they don't want to show off or pose as the great musicians they are, but they just love playing the music and appreciate how it all comes together as art.
I don't know why I wrote this, but it just seems like a very unique thing for a music video.

Yesterday, I went to see Tesseract in NY. There were 4 bands playing. The Contortionist were the best by FAR and in every possible way. Excellent performance, excellent sound... everything simply excellent. 10/10 to me. The best live show I've ever seen. ... And I've seen Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Iron Maiden and you know, a bunch of these "heavy weights" in the rock/metal world.

One Of My Favourites Prog Metal Songs
By far the most influential album in my life. As I got to know it I became something else coincidentally. All I do is learn now. From people, by myself, I even learn by helping other students learn. I can't stop doing it since I got to know this album. Like I'm trying to help the universe tell it's story!

Intrinsic, which I thought was a better album than Exoplanet, is one of my favorite metal albums, period. This album sounds like it's going to be EXCELLENT.
I agree. Exoplanet has its moments, but I can find something I love in every song off of Intrinsic. They become more and more musical each album. I love the skills they have with dynamics. Man. :D

kitramsey5150 Except for the obvious fact that there are many people on YT (look at comments) that enjoy Intrinsic more, it vibes better. Many, including myself, listened to Exoplanet and loved it. And then loved Intrinsic more.
kitramsey5150 The nice thing is that it's music. Our subjective feelings don't need to agree. I have Intrinsic on my top 20 all time metal albums. Many wouldn't. To me, it's superior in almost every way. Much more dynamic. It encouraged me (an 11 year player) to write things that I had not before.

I love this band's sound!! I've played their older albums countless times and this one looks like it's going to be just as good.
Their first album is still one of my favorites. Truly wasn't a huge fan of the second album, but this song is very beautiful, well written, and I really look forward to the release of this album.

Ryan Wilkerson Didn't say it didn't have any good songs. Also perhaps my expectation of the CD was a little too high and also was expecting something different. I am all for bands changing their sound and evolving which they did on Intrinsic, but I just found it harder to enjoy from start to finish whereas with Exoplanet, just every song is spectacular (in my opinion of course).

If you want life-changing, listen to the outros from Flourish or Exoplanet, and the intro to Exoplanet III. They brought Intrinsic to its knees because of the music and the SCOPE of the lyrics; one is not complete without the other
