I'm proud to love these guys and I'm thinking about buying this album. And holy shit, the artwork.

Quite a few of their songs have blown me away with the way they start with a theme and evolve it, or introduce new themes. Lipincott is a fantastic example.
+Tico4president nah dude you are so misinformed. tosin's actually the bassist. wow... this is awkward how could you not know that...? Also I think he did alright with vocals
Tosin and Javier make my Guitar skill level seem that of a fucking Triangle player, this is insane... I don't even think I'd be able to play in front of these guys haha.
Just saw these guys on the weekend live for the second time. I play guitar and was classically trained a a violinist. Watching them I just stand there mouth open thinking 'How in the name of holy fuck do they keep this music together and play like that!?' They are all playing different polyrhythms, everything is doing something different weaving in and out and Tosin is just incredible, he missed like 2 notes in a 1.5 hour set. The level of virtuosity is over 9000.
Eh not really, I can think of plenty of really complex pieces that do though. The harmonies in this song are not quite as complex as you may think. The drumming is intricate but the underlying rhythms are pretty simple and have a consistent repeat. It's like a collection of sections from Tool songs but sped-up in that regard.
EvilAlbear To me, Dream Theater are an OK band, very technically proficient, but machine-like and lacking in emotional resonance. Plus, a lot of people hate the singer. I personally think that he has a whiny, hair-metal style that is offputting.
All the tracks ive heard so far have been phenomenal. Its a perfect blend of the past two albums. Self-Titled 2009: Epic melodies, but wasn't organic enough for me...sounded kinda dry and angular at times. Weightless 2011: Sounded fuller with the live drums and wayyy better production, but the songs, save New Eden and David for me, were too "dugga-da-digga-da" for me. Didn't really take me on a journey. But this. This shit right here is da bee's knees. Fuck that. ITS THE WHOLE LEG.
I agree. It's a lovely mix of both albums. What gets me is the drums. In the first album, the bass drum just did not have enough punch for me. In the second, there was a hell of a lot more bass drum, but the cymbals were barely audible. This here is a perfect blend, but not just for the drums, this album is a blend of styles from the Self-Titled and Weightless. /)
Derp McGrahamCracker the drumming in this album is the best in any AAL album by far. very organic not robotic-sounding. matt garstka has feel, groove, and precision. beast. i prefer this style over mere precision-drumming a la Alex Rudinger.
I love both Alex and Matt. Both are highly versatile drummers. Matt can go from crazy technical Djent grooves, to a gospel chop-like rhythm. Alex can go from crazy blast beats to a very mellow style of playing. Both drummers have their perks.
Andrew Reid I dont think he was complimenting them.... "This is disgusting" is an awful compliment. Sensory overload...Bad. "Ridiculous" musicianship is also not too nice.

transfixed. by both. nailed it. the anticipation of knowing that it's coming is beautiful. the build from 2:57 on is almost too pleasurable. feels like i need to add some discomfort into my life to allow myself to listen to it.
some People say that animals as leaders' music is just technical and has no Emotion at all, but for me it carries a lot of emotion. I dont know why People always try to argue about such things. Maybe they are actually kind of impressed and get the need to defend their music taste. But There is no need at all.
Why does it have to be so emotional anyway? Not enough people can appreciate music for what it is, and only want to connect with it in a way that's familiar with them, ala lyricism. Lots of the best music is instrumental stuff like this that's beyond words, and trying to trap it within the confines of human language would be a travesty.
If that's all you want to get out of it. Personally I'm almost mechanically unemotional, but I listen to a shit ton of music by bands like AAL and Rush and Coheed because it's fascinating in a way that can't really be explained by any human terms. "Why does a particular melody/rhythm sound so incredibly good?" "What about a major to minor key transition changes the mood of a song so drastically?" etc. These are important questions, but ones that can't really be answered because we just simply can't fully comprehend the mathematics and science behind them and how they interact with our brain. When you listen to complex progressive music like this and you stop trying to feel and think about deep meanings, and instead kind of lose yourself in the music and marvel in the perfection and purity of the technique and the composition, you come out wishing that you could spend the rest of your life hearing nothing but an endless cascade of different melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. The possibilities of musical composition are literally infinite; the spectrum of human emotion, however, only goes so far. Which is why every song with the exact same theme in genres like pop and country get incredibly old so fast.
Yeah, but "sound good" "fascinating", "you come out wishing", "marvel in the perfection", "the mood" etc. all that seems like the lexical field of feelings and emotions to me ^^ even if you can hardly describe them (that's precisely what makes them emotion and not intellectual thinking). I mean you say you're unemotional but I'm sure you're not, if you really were you wouldn't listen to music ^^
3:52 the way he holds that note without bending it or anything makes it sound so much better! I don't know why when he plays live, he bends it. Just hold it like that and do nothing, that's what keep the tension!
In a way i love that que just holds it but in another way i actually like and a lot when it is in a bend and mostly with vibrato, but whatever, sound awesome in both ways for me... :p

JURGMANDR Once I got used to Weightless it's just as good. The good thing about AAL is their sound progresses. They don't just make stale sounding shit that sounds just like the last album. Each album has it's own sound. That's the best part.
Actually, when broken down, it's not as complicated as it may sound (still very difficult, however). Basically, the time signatures after the intro rotate between 15/16 and 17/16 The drums are basically playing a polyrhythmic pattern, the snare playing every 5 16th notes and the cymbals every 4 16th notes, basically a 5 against 4 polyrhythm, of course switching the pattern when the 17/16 bar comes to a fill of some sort. Then along similar sections after, it switches the placement of snare drum, bass drum, and cymbals to give it a more varied sound.
I think Tosin's solo in this is the best one he's ever composed. It's dark, mysterious, and moody then just fucking explodes into chill inducing bad assery. This is one of their best tracks.

Started to listen to Meshuggah a couple months ago and was instantly hooked. After that I found Gojira and now this, awesome...
Try out Periphery :)
Scale the summit
I followed that same band path then heard The Contortionist. All very artistic yet heavy sounds. Blown away

Who the fuck would thumbs down this? Must have been some SoundCloud rappers...
I'd watch a Bond film with the score provided by Animals As Leaders.

1:29 I fucking love this riff.
I wonder if AAL listens to Kaskade
stfu idiot
Nope, they probably listened to it wayyy too much during recording. lol
Josh Poel Kaskade is a DJ, what got you so mad over his comment?...
probably, tosin abasi has said many times that they all like electronic music
They do listen to Kaskade of course.
A solid 10,000 of these views are me. I only say 10,000 cause I'm trying to stay realistic here.
0:10 - 0:23 ...LISTEN TO THOSE FUCKING DRUMS.
WHAT
THE
FUUUUUUU
THE FACT THAT A HUMAN BODY IS PLAYING THAT BLOWS MY FUCKIN MIND.
Then along similar sections after, it switches the placement of snare drum, bass drum, and cymbals to give it a more varied sound.
yep
sihplak Still sounds complicated lol.
sihplak aint nobody got time fo that
The lyrics remind me of my dad.
This is my first proper listen to AAL, even for a djentleman like myself, and I will buy this album. So much talent!
djentleman, that's deadly.
alpegg75 seems like he's been djent out of shape.
very djently, haha
djog on, son!
***** no. it's djent
The lyrics are inside the guitars
This tune got me hooked on AAL
the first 40 seconds remind me of Amogh Symphony
It's refreshing to hear something in the π/ λ time.
I think Tosin's solo in this is the best one he's ever composed. It's dark, mysterious, and moody then just fucking explodes into chill inducing bad assery. This is one of their best tracks.
James Bond on that one part anyone?:D
here we go again!
5, 5, 5, 5 sixteenth notes! Best music teachers of all the time to me! They taught me a great new world of syncopation!
