- In this video I demonstrate Winged Bowl Turning with a live edge Dogwood blank. This is a relatively small project for beginning bowl turners to develop their winged bowl turning skills before moving up to larger winged bowls.

Great video! I love how you state that’s the way you do it. Some experts say that their way is the only way and I find that contradicted nearly every day by some other expert. And yes I consider you an expert if you are giving lessons, demonstrations, and making videos on how to do something. Then I consider you an expert and you are one of the best.

If you watch the shadow of the shavings land on your tool at 18:10 it looks like some ants marching up the bowl 😂 or maybe I'm just seein things 🤣🤣 really cool video, gave me many ideas! And the bowl turned out great!

You can do it if you have a few bowls under your belt.

I only have two bowls to my turning credit. One was a small walnut bowl and the other was a three winged (edged) bowl. The three winged bowl was a nice challenge that turned out very well. I like jumping into more difficult projects and make my mistakes there rather than on small ones that may not be significant. I believe turning something more difficult than something simple since the learning is greater. I took on this philosophy years ago when I first learned stained glass as a hobby, then turned it into a successful business for over 30 years. Now, I plan to do the same with wood turning. The only difference will be making “play” by turning wood since it is addictive.
I have seen some novice turners jump into larger projects without a complete understanding of thje risks. A lack of full tool control or understanding some basics like appropriate late speed can cause serious injuries or worse. Poor chucking methods can tolerate some small bowls but not something large and off balance. Remember, a lathe is one of the few tools in your shop that can kill you! Others just cut off fingers. I believe in walking before you crawl. But do what works for you but stay safe my friend.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning I fully understand the dangers and other implications. Usually, I don't go beyond my expertise and will stop if I sense getting into trouble. But, that's not to say I don't like challenging myself. Last year I had a very good friend who was turning wood in his shop that was located in Southern New Mexico. He was 93 years young and still farmed one section of pecan orchard. I had an orchard not too far from his until i got out of the business in 2009. In October 2018 I went to visit him. His wife said he was in the shop. When I got to the shop, I found him dead on the floor as a result of turning some mesquite wood that had impaled the artery in his neck. He was gone in just a minute or two. Even if medical care was on the scene, there was little they could have done to save him. So, I am very much aware of the dangers of turning wood and have seen what they are. In fact, when I turn wood, I usually wear a heavy cowhide apron and a full coverage helmet. His accident scared the bejesus out of me, but never stopped me from having the wood turning addiction.
@@jarmstrong2843 OMG! I can't imagine the shock of finding a friend like that. Scary still that I turned some mesquite today but a chess piece blank cut from a large and very crack blank.

Minwax Antique Oil. Like the add says I use that S -bleep-t oneverything. You can order thru my Amazon shop but you can also buy at Ace hardware.

I have used an Optima for years and quite happy with it. It is not available on Amazon. This is where I bought mine gregdorrance.com/product/optima-1-dual-wood-burner-w-2-pens/. It is quite similar to the Razertip but about 20% cheaper.

I have a quick question that does not pertain to this video. Perhaps you may know this fellow wood turner and know what happened to him. Robbie the Wood Turner, a fellow from Ireland, stopped making videos about 4 years ago. Like your videos, I enjoyed watching his videos too and got a lot from them. I noticed a shake in his hands and thought there might be a medial issue. Many of the well known wood turners subscribe to other channels and keep up with each other. That is why I ask.
Keep those wood shavings flying. I enjoy all your videos and learn from them.
I enjoyed Robbie's videos as well. I know he was on disability back then so can only assume his condition worsened.
