I turned this winged bowl on the lathe. I started with a 9" x 9" x 4" piece. I used Maple for the bowl, and Bark Oak for the chopsticks.

Thanks for the shout out Carl. You explained the process very well. Great looking piece. There are lots of variations you can do just by altering which wings you cut off.

Carl, Great project. Came out great. Recently I came across about 20 rock maple burls from a farm down the street. I have beendoing a few bows from these. Tricky, but rewarding. Now I want to do your winged bowl from a burl. You are very adept at making do with the tools you have. ie using the d.a.sander instead of grinder. I have learned so much from you. Keep it up. I also can tell you adapted quickly to the Robust. They are the ONLY lathe. I love mine. Paul Charbonneau

Ah, chopsticks. . .before I'd turned much I made a set of chopsticks for a friend as a thank you for being a running buddy. . . I didn't even think of using a chuck, so I ended up remaking the chopsticks about 4 times turning between centers. figured maple though, they turned out amazingly!
Also, that bowl looks pretty sweet, I might see about adopting the winged concept into some of my work. . . might look cool on a top (strokes beard)

Impressive final result. Makes my first few tops and miniature baseball bats look pretty tame! But, you're the Master, Carl. At first I wasn't clear at all as to the process on how the up and down wings were to be turned. Then the light bulb went on when I saw you mark the block, cut the V and then cut off the wings you didn't want. Perhaps new turners need a bit more explanation of what is coming up so we can follow along as you turn? Anyway, a very inspiring video. Hope I can learn to do this someday.

Carl wonderful project another idea for me to try so I can contribute to my ever growing supply of sawdust. It would be interesting to have, for this and all your projects, an idea of how long it took in real time.

Carl: This are also call "Manta ray" bowls. Check Terry Scott from New Zealand for his technique. He uses a skew to make the V cut between the wings which is whatI use.

I found your demonstration very interesting, but I also found you workshop interesting, what little of it I could see.
There was a man who started a construction business, and it became one of the biggest in the USA, yet he knew very little about the work itself. People asked him, how did you know whom to employ, to get good workers?
His answer was, I asked the work men to bring their tool boxes to the interview, and I employed those with the neatest tool boxes.
So in this case the neatest workshop would replace toolbox.
What I could see of your workshop was amazingly well organised.
Is there a video of yours that shows more of your workshop please? I would be very interested in the layout and organisation, as I'm about to start a total reorganisation of my workshop, and any hints would be extremely useful.
    Many thanks,
    Nik

      Thanks Carl.
A few interesting ideas there, one being the drawer unit alongside the lathe, and the general uncluttered layout.
A couple of mine you may find useful.
I have a neodymium magnet glued to the end of the shaft of my chuck key. It allows me to 'stick' the chuck key to the drill press, and its always available, and cant get mislaid. [I also have one on my long handled teaspoon for coffee, and a bottle opener, 'stuck' to my microwave oven, for instant access.]
I use supermarket vegetable trays, [cheap and no work] in several vertical racks, about 6 ft high as storage for just about everything, similar to your rack of yellow trays, but 16'' wide x 2 ft long.
Your chip collector looks massive! [I'm just a little envious.]
