Thanks .mike!!! I have turned my first live edge bowl, after your video. Your instructions are most complete, by following it, my first came out fine,a little thick, but that comes with time. Thanks again...
Thanks to you I have been making some very nice natural edge bowls from some salted oak I harvested dead around 15% moisture content. You are a good teacher.
Mike, that was one of your best explanations on bowl turning. I always learn new techniques and get inspired by your videos. Thanks for sharing you time an talents.
THAT was the best instruction for a newbie like me I have had thus far anywhere ! I now have all I need to turn wood except good weather. I HATE the COLD !! When I can catch a warm day or two I am going in the building and give it a whirl. Have zero experience but would sure love to learn, your videos help..... I think ? Keep up the good work !
This Is great thanks, I just have my lathe on order and loved the video about choosing chucks, I'll certainly be back for. as much as I get time to watch. Thanks so much
On my channel home page, look for the playlist Basic Woodturning for beginners. Do not try and start with a bowl until you do some spindle work. Good luck!
Loved the close-ups for the inside of the bowl. Along with your wonderful explanation, it makes for excellent instruction, especially for a relative newbie like me. Thanks!
Thanks Mike. As you know I mostly do segmented turnings but it's good to see how to take care of the green wood. I should probably do more green wood as it is obviously much quicker to the finished product. Thank you for sharing.
@MikePeaceWoodturning I just made one about 5" diameter. I used very green camphor. The ribbons felt like ice crystals when they flew past my hands and they smelled good too! I took off most of the tenon and just left a little nubbin to chisel off later. I put it in a paper bag. When is it OK to put finish on it? I assume it will warp which is OK with me. My mentor gave me a recipe that I will attach.
@@suncentaur Depends on the humidity and bowl thickness. If turned reasonably thin I would think 6 weeks would be fine. Or try drying by microwave but do some research so you do not burn it up.
Yes. I do not like turning very large live edge bowls or very small ones. Turnnng green bowls are more of a target of opportunity. I get a nice piece of green wood and turn a bowl rather than decide to turn a bowl and start looking for a certain size piece of wood. Does that answer your questiton?
very intresting mike . i got a question for ya . now i seen you put it in a paper bag at the end there . have you ever tried using silica i guess you can get it in kitty litter them high end brands of kitty. litter have you ever used this method and if so what did you think about it ?
Nope, never tried it. Not in a big hurry. There is a special desicant bead product for drying woodturnings that would be better than silican But it solves a problem I don't have.
Every time I attempt these, I end up with a round bowl! I really like the lines of these bowls but may have to buy one from a competent wood turner! I will pass it off as mine when I give it to my wife! JK haha!
Ebay. It is called an ACU jacket. Get a long so it will cover your pockets even if you are a Short or Regular. You can alwasy cinch up the velcro sleeves.
I generally do not use CA to hold the bark on. My NE bowls generally are from green Bradford Pear and the bark stays on. I do finish the entire bowl with Minwax AO including the bark.
That little green grommet is not tape, I know what that is! Must say, I was surprised to see one of those in this video. Might implement the idea myself!

Great bowl, Mike! And video! And especially coffee mug!!!
I love picking up the odd mug at a thrift store!

Loved the video very informative. You would be a good teacher to have nice job on the edge bowl.
I appreciate your comments, Alan.
Thanks, Mike. I’ve made a few natural edge bowls and have been improving. This will help me correct some mistakes.
That is great, Ron. I appreciate the feedback.
Lots of learning in this for me. Thanks Mike

The heart wasnt what the heart wants!😆😆😆
Thank you for this! What finish did you use and how to apply it to the bark section?
I used Minwax AO which has been discontinued. I will have to fine a replacement. I have tried wipe on poly but not a big fan.

Here is his formula: 1/3 boiled linseed oil 1/3 tung oil 1/3 man o war gloss spar finish.
@@suncentaur Umm. Sounds loike too much oil and not enough mineral spirits to thin it and speed drying.
@@suncentaur Depends on the humidity and bowl thickness. If turned reasonably thin I would think 6 weeks would be fine. Or try drying by microwave but do some research so you do not burn it up.
Mike, do you consider the thickness and width of the wood before you start? To determine what the end result might be?
Yes. I do not like turning very large live edge bowls or very small ones. Turnnng green bowls are more of a target of opportunity. I get a nice piece of green wood and turn a bowl rather than decide to turn a bowl and start looking for a certain size piece of wood. Does that answer your questiton?

Mike, I think that this is one of your best videos you have done. Did you buy your 2 prong drive, or grind down a 4 prong? Thanks.
It came with my PM3520b

Лучше сушить в СВЧ печи !! 6 раз по 7 минут и влажность будет НОЛЬ !! Быстро и без трещин . Смотри мой ролик !! привет из Москвы ! желаю удачи !!
Where did you get that cammo jacket?
Ebay. It is called an ACU jacket. Get a long so it will cover your pockets even if you are a Short or Regular. You can alwasy cinch up the velcro sleeves.
Mike, I'm getting ready to try my first live edge and I have a question. To you treat the bark with any finish or as I've seen in other videos CA?
I generally do not use CA to hold the bark on. My NE bowls generally are from green Bradford Pear and the bark stays on. I do finish the entire bowl with Minwax AO including the bark.
Mike, Could I turn a bowl like that with easy wood tools also?
Probably. Not sure which cutter would slice the bark as well as a conventional gouge. Try it and let me know whcih cutter works best.
That little green grommet is not tape, I know what that is! Must say, I was surprised to see one of those in this video. Might implement the idea myself!
I got that idea from Lyle Jamieson who got it from a student who was a vet. I think I found them on eBay for about $3 for a 100.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning I live in a farm all the way down in Tierra del Fuego, so got loads of them. Will definitely try it!
