Hi Phil. Just saying, one of the reasons why so many of us follow you so much is that you are not concerned with workpieces that are perfect and symmetrical. Lots of people do that stuff, including me, but watching them is like watching paint dry. It’s your very craziness that makes your work so good. Cheers Richard
Thanks for that, Richard! 😊 Try some crazy sometime, I think you will find you like it (might take a couple) and will get more great comments on your work.
Personally i never cared for the square corners but this bowl is just lovely i would be proud to display. I love seeing your work and what your imagination can produce. Never been disappointed in any thing you have created. THANK YOU ,for sharing your art with the world.
My wife and sons claim I am slightly off center, so I like a bowl that reflects my personality! You must have been talking to them just before turning this gorgeous piece of elm!
Yaaay, it’s a Phil video! It’s bedtime here, and it’s so peaceful to unwind to your videos and to read the comments. Good people in the world. Talented people. Beautiful things.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Elm bowl in the books. I need a bowl like this for when I eat soup bc it would keep all my spills from going on my table cloth...lol 😆
Phil, I enjoy watching your videos. I'm not a woodworker but appreciate your honest videos. It feels like we are friends and you are teaching me how to turn the beautiful bowls you make. It seems that you genuinely love what you do and you simply invite us into your shop to watch what you do. I find your videos relaxing, educational, and I look forward to each one. Best wishes!
Wade, I can say that most certainly“Phil” has inspired the way I turn. He has also pointed me towards others PAPA 1947 , Gord Rock etc. Without his influence and information I’d certainly be struggling. 🙂
Phil, we don't think you're crazy. We *know* you're crazy and that's why we watch you. You take pieces of wood that most people would put in the burn barrel and produce an amazing work of art.
Actually I Loved you comment and outlook in leaving slight imperfections in you projects. I never sell any of my wood workings, but I give a ton of them away. With each piece, the recipient gets a note on how to care for it and my personal message that I Never strive to make my wood project perfect, because the only time wood is perfect is when it is on a tree as God made it. Thank you Phil, John
Hey Phil, A majority of your viewers love you for just this sort of natural attitude towards a piece of wood. I know I keep coming back for it. Like you said at the beginning, you could go to the store to buy a porcelain bowl if you wanted to have a perfectly symmetrical piece. Keep up the great work/fun Pal!
Phil, I enjoy it most when you turn some crazy, rooty piece of wood with rocks and cracks and everything else. Still, these videos with more well-behaved wood are outstanding and probably a bit easier on you, too! Thanks for letting us join you every week. Hope you're continuing to feel good.
Thank you, Leigh! I, too, love the crazy pieces with cracks and voids and all manner of foreign objects. But, it is fun to turn at a higher RPM and just feel the smooth cuts happen. 😊
Of course we like it , that means much more than a simply round bowl , the mere idea of the square top is great , makes all the difference , surely interesting for woodturners !
What's crazy to me is the fact that we as wood turners seem to get a little bit of criticism for creating something that nobody else could ever see to begin with. That to me is where the artists mind begins to go where the art needs to be. Happy turning my friend 😊
Looking good! Whenever I make something from Elm, I can't help but use the word chatoyance, because someone always asks why it's so shiny. I love using that word too, it's a cool word. Star wars fans can see the Death Star inside this bowl. I learned about Howard's from you, and I use it all the time, I just love that stuff.
Phil The beauty of the uncovered wood grain takes the eye away from any uneveness It went unnoticed until you started pointing them out. Nice turning. John
We know you are crazy Phil, you are "special" and it's what we love about you lol. A pretty bowl and the imperfections make it unique and very special. Thank you mate.
As the creator, it is your eyes and hands that see and feel the wood and know by that what it was meant to be. You lovingly work your magic using your knowledge, skill and heart to bring such beauty into existence. There is no need to apologize for or second guess yourself because of what an arm chair quarterback may think. We watch because we enjoy what you do and the choices you make! Thank you for sharing yourself and your beautiful creations!!
Hey Phil! I believe the slightly off center bowl to the wing portion adds a nice dimension of the bowl. I didn’t thing so when you saw that the wings would not be even, but it adds a feature that adds to the appeal to the bowl. Nice, as usual!
Really nice work Phil. I'm always amazed by the finish you are able to achieve. I think the shape suits the piece. The other profile I like for winged bowls is a gentle downward curve. It seems to soften the otherwise sharp edges of a flat rectangle.
Absolutely perfect the finish is so silky looking and I always do love how you think outside the box and don make boring bowls! Also I am not a fan at all of beads but it is just so fitting on this it helps define the shape and I think it goes well with with the straight edges, I don’t think a curve would have been as fitting! Good as always Phil you’re the best!!!
I love the honey colored elm finish. Nature is to be appreciated with it's unique features. Bravo. Thanks for the tips on diamond cards and burs on the scraper. 🔷
How on earth do you look at that block of wood and see a beautiful a winged bowl inside? When we say you're an artist (despite your objections), this is what we mean.
Phil I love your channel!! I started into wood turning about 5Years ago when I Inherited a entry level lathe from my father. Turning is so much fun. I had to upgrade to a Jet latheVS. You are the best teacher of your craft. Thank you for sharing your expertise. You have given me the courage to try new projects. All my friends are amazed at the bowls I have made. I love your conversational style. It makes me feel like i’m in the shop with you! Thanks again Phil McGhee
It's been a few weeks since I added a comment. I have been busy and have watched every video. Don't change the way that you think a piece of wood should be. I made a bowl for our neighbor from part of a tree that was cut down in her yard. I left the live edge and bark inclusions and she loved it. I owe that to you. Thanks so much for your video's.
Wonderful story, Alan! I love that you could make your neighbor lady happy with a piece of her tree including the bark she may have touched while it was still standing! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Dave Smith in Arizona....Nice hard wood with no cracks....Thanks for the diamond dresser techniques Phil. ... NO PHIL, YOU DO NOT DRIVE ME CRAZY. Your imperfectious (ha) turnings are exactly why you are so much fun to watch & I do not need another flawless ceramic cereal bowl thank you. UNTIL NEXT TIME...TM
"Imperfectious" I love that, term, Tuffy! I will be using that in the future. I've always had a hard time defining my style, I think you've nailed it! 😊
It's because of you that I went from needing perfect to needing perfectly unique. U have inspired me to do more stuff with natural bark and cracks and holes...perfectly UNIQUE. I've only berm turning for almost a yr.
I love it to be honest, and as the artist Bob Ross used to say there are no mistakes there are just happy accidents and I think it’s a lovely little bowl. Well done.
Looks great as always. You’re right the “not perfect” edges and spacing makes it perfect. I love the square shape and I can’t wait to try one. Thanks for the lesson!
I thought at the start that it wouldn't look right, but I was wrong. The finished peice looks great - you were right in that the lopsidedness would add to the character and not take away from it.
Hi Phil, you've said."Im not so much into perfection.." Thats exactly what makes your work so sympathic. The winged bowl looks great, the grain turned out very nicely. Well done. I've never turned a winged bowl but i will definitely try. Thanks Phil !
What a unique and beautiful "Screwacky" bowl. Gorgeous piece of Elm. I love watching you create your natural kinds of bowls and art pieces. The finish on this bowl is really nice. Great piece Phil! Love it! 💕😊
Glad I found you Phil! I have been in machine shops for 45 years. Working with .001's and .0001's. I started bowl turning 3 years ago and told myself I would never push for perfection again. I love the freedom.

Hi Phil, another beautiful work of art made by you and Mother Nature!!!!! Yesterday I hopped on the lawn tractor to mow and click, click, click, dead battery. The six sided 7/16th nuts and bolts refused to work with my 12-point box wrenches, so it was vise-grips to get the wires disconnected from the battery and off to Advance Auto for a new battery, 6-point wrenches and new battery post bolts. Oh, and the two clips on my battery charger eroded to being useless. Well $78 and change later and sandpaper to clean the corrosion off of the wire ends, my yard is now freshly mowed and looks great. After watching your video and calming down I decided to wait a few days before I change the oil and sharpen the blades on the mower. There are many things that you just can't rush besides wood turning!!!!!
You should never apologize for turning unique shapes. That's who you are and why a lot of us watch you. Always a pleasure.
I like it Phil it’s just great
I think Monte said it right. And yes you are always a Pleasure.
Thanks, Monte! 😊
Their is no mistakes, it’s seen through the artist’s eyes. Phil has the eye.👍👍👍👍

Phil .. I love everything about your Screwacky bowl.. .. wish I possessed your vision of planning the outcome of a piece of wood...
My vision is, mount it and start turning, Cecil. It will become something! 😊
I have yet seen you turn anything that wasn't a masterpiece I have learned so much from watching you over the years you sir are a great teacher.
😊
I love winged bowls and I see only the beauty of the bowl, not the irregularities.
Excellent, thanks, Carol! 😊
This is beautiful. I agree that perfection can be boring. Well done!

Elm is gorgeous and this bowl with it's little attached plate is very cute.

It's beautiful grain and smooth as silk. No, the wacky as you call it doesn't bother me at all. I love it!😍👍👏
😊
I think working with the shape of the wood instead of making it conform is beautiful, it makes every piece unique just like the trees they came from.

I love the natural features you leave in your turnings.
