  • I mostly turn natural pieces, always trying to use what nature has provided and showcasing the defects, etc. This is more of a conventional winged-bowl but I was able to leave some of the history of the wood while still creating an interesting shape.
Or, is it? You decide! Elm, finished in Feed & Wax.

Hi Phil. Just saying, one of the reasons why so many of us follow you so much is that you are not concerned with workpieces that are perfect and symmetrical. Lots of people do that stuff, including me, but watching them is like watching paint dry. It’s your very craziness that makes your work so good. Cheers Richard

    Hey Phil,
A majority of your viewers love you for just this sort of natural attitude towards a piece of wood. I know I keep coming back for it.
Like you said at the beginning, you could go to the store to buy a porcelain bowl if you wanted to have a perfectly symmetrical piece.
Keep up the great work/fun Pal!

Absolutely perfect the finish is so silky looking and I always do love how you think outside the box and don make boring bowls! Also I am not a fan at all of beads but it is just so fitting on this it helps define the shape and I think it goes well with with the straight edges, I don’t think a curve would have been as fitting! Really nice work Phil. I'm always amazed by the finish you are able to achieve. I think the shape suits the piece. The other profile I like for winged bowls is a gentle downward curve. It seems to soften the otherwise sharp edges of a flat rectangle.

With each piece, the recipient gets a note on how to care for it and my personal message that I Never strive to make my wood project perfect, because the only time wood is perfect is when it is on a tree as God made it. Looks great. No need to be perfect. Many people like the unusual stuff. Keep up the great work.

I think working with the shape of the wood instead of making it conform is beautiful, it makes every piece unique just like the trees they came from.

What a lovely little bowl! I love the shape, and the grain is just beautiful. I love the unique and unusual, and this is both!
