I appreciate your sentiment, but I must beg to differ. Pure boxing purists, and everyone else knew and appreciated Sugar Ray Leonard. The video, itself, featured here, attests to that very fact. After winning Gold in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Leonard soon turned pro. He was known more popularly as a fighter for the 80s. He was acknowledged as one of the "Four Kings" of boxing, in the company of fellow champions, Roberto Duran, Thomas "Hitman" Hearns, and "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler. They created the greatest era of boxing, south of the heavyweight division, for the welter through middleweight divisions. The iconic "War" between Hagler-Hearns is still talked about, more than 40 years later. To this very day, "Hagler-Heatns" has become the standard term for a much anticipated showdown between two explosive fighters meeting in their prime. Leonard Hearne was also an epic showdown. These fighters all faced one another, and dodged no one. So, no, none of them are forgotten for their dynamic contributions to the sport of boxing. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Thats why all those 70 and 80s fighters were able to come out of retirement and take titles from men half their age, Tyson is an early 80s fighter, in great shape at 58, he's gonna defeat Paul!

They were just built different back in the day. I still consider the '80s the Golden era of boxing since I have been alive. Leonard to this day is the best fighter I have ever seen.
The best??? Uh no...Duran far outshines Leonard. Remember he was a champion for 3 years by the time Leonard won the 76 Olympics. Larry Holmes was better, and a guy by the name of Muhammad Ali was better as well. A slew of Mexican and Puerto Rican fighters from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Marvin Hagler was better ,regardless of half blind judges. Had they fought in 82 ,Ray would have left on a stretcher. Now with all that he is definitely a top 10 Welterweight. As far as middleweight barely top 20. Beating a faded Hagler doesn't make him all time great and then fighting for a made up super middleweight title and light heavyweight title ,while a little impressive doesn't make him all time great. I still would say that he's a top 100 all time fighter. Mostly because he fought greats who had already peaked such as Hagler and Duran. Benitez hardly trained. Hearns was a great victory but fight 2 ,Tommy got hosed ,he clearly won and even Ray admitted he lost as well. Ray was a media darling meant to take Ali's place. That and the fact that Angelo Dundee was his trainer. Any fight that Dundee was part of that was controversial his guy always won. Maybe because his brother Chris Dundee had very strong mafia ties but that's another story. Best you ever saw ???? Only if you had tunnel vision.
Absolute savage the pair of these warriors. Floyd took some punishment and never gave up ever! Much respect to him, Leonard was magnificent, what a tough ass time to have been that weight division ffs, killers around every corner back then.
Floyd Sr was actually amazing. He was a freak, but he got caught with the wrong crowd, drugs, etc. If he has the training, discipline, diet and conditioning of an elite athlete, took it seriously, he probably would have steam rolled Leonard. One of many "what ifs", but thru witnessing his father's failures, Floyd Jr became the GOAT and super disciplined.

Fantastic fight. Dundee had his overcompensating for the fact that Floyd was legitimately giving SRL a MUCH better scrap than they seemed to except. There’s also an incredibly strange moment in this fight that I actually think think is one of the most rare I’ve ever seen in couple dozen years watching boxing. At 8:02 both throw a right hand that would have dramatically changed the fight - imo Ray would have sparked Floyd out cold in the dirt and while we now know Ray’s chin is iron, at this point if this landed I think Ray was in trouble. Floyd seemed to have seen Ray throw it last second fully loaded up and rushed his shot only to divert late and attempt to deflect with his glove. and Ray 100% calculated Floyd was landing first hence why he slightly pulled it and braced try to slide out just a bit to let it glance . But then their punches actually punch eacother mid air with what I still think is their wrists colliding. You can tell it hurt Floyd BAD watch his right arm go limp for a second and steps back stunned. I’ve scaled the image up cleaning the edges it doesn’t land on Floyd. It just confused the hell out of him and you could tell he was in pain. Shocked he didn’t shatter his wrist. He really did rise to the level of his competitor in this night you gotta give him that .
It's always great to see you in the comments. Your support since day one means a lot to me. I also appreciate how you consistently have insightful information on everything I create!

Sugar was the champion of champions. He was pretty in the ring and out the ring. His weight class had the most talented boxers. And he was the one that finished his career on top.
Teofilo Stevenson is not a 'what if'. Even as an Aussie, I know that. Amateur boxer for 20 years and a triple Olympic gold medalist. Ali, Foreman, Frazier, De La Hoya, Whittaker, Floyd Patterson, Leon Spinks, Michael Spinks etc etc, all won a gold medal...one. Who is to say what route is the toughest - personally I believe the amateur route, with the lack of money and support to be much tougher.... Now we talk about Usain Bolt winning golds at 3 successive games, or Phelps doing the same....don't forget Teofilo Stevenson - he did it way before them both... 3 world championships, 3 gold medals and a record of 302/332, with 22 losses and 8 draws.....legend.
I remember watcthing this fight, I pulled for Leonard because he was so closely tied to Ali - the Fighting styles so closely resembled Ali. Ali had not yet retired and Angelo Dundee displayed his Condidence on Sugar Ray Leanard. He fought so much like a Ali at a lower weight Limit. His connections to Ali were obvious at that time.
I watched as many of the Ray Leonard fights as I could in the day. As much as I like to hear about all these great fighters today that are truly great. I don't think I have seen his match. He took on all the best in his time including some he had no chance to win against and he did anyway. He proved to be fast as lightning, and tougher than nails as well as the stamina to take it to the limit. If we could reach back in time and grab Ray Leonard to put into the ring today, I would bet on Ray every time. He won in the Olympics against veterans of the east block communist countries when he was still a youngster. He was one bad dude.
“Unknown” Ray Leonard??? the man literally want gold medal for the United States and was a big star before he fought his first professional fight. How was he unknown?
Man...Mr. Mayweather Sr. was tough AF. He was taking some hard shots and then coming back by the next round, still wanting to knock Mr. Leonard's head off. Great bout!
Ray was known to all those in boxing who should have known of him as a boxer since b4 the 1976 Olympic Games. He was an "unmistakable, undeniable talent!!!" Trust me, he snuck up on no one!!!
Two great warriors early in the business. SRL had the mass appeal and the cute cuddly thing going on but he was dangerous when his opponent was in trouble. FM was no slouch but no one was safe with a young, hungry, quick handed showman like SRL. I remember watching him against the equally dangerous Wilfredo Benitez and it was touch and go up until the point SRL had him in trouble and SRL put that head to bed. His hand speed, defense, ring savvy for a young boxer along with an underrated boxing IQ was very lethal for opponents. Plus he had the bonus in the legendary Angelo Dundee. He understood who the boxers were and allowed them to be themselves which harnessed their best stuff and reined them in when necessary. He, Cus, Eddie Futch and Emmanuel Steward were my favorites and Roger Mayweather was underrated and mean in the corner.
honestly it don't matter who we think was the best fighter in those days they all went hell for leather and put their hearts into it and stood their ground to the best they could do their most never backed out of a fight even though a manager would say its not time to fight so and so they still did it in the end and that's what boxing was made great by

Sugar ray woulda utterly destroyed Jr.his dad was hard as nails.
Sugar is the best to ever live at the weight.
An era of boxing that will never come back unfortunately
Mayweather really had skill here, shame he wasnt matched better,i wonder who his promotor was, whod turn down a big chance and payday tho i guess.
He admits himself he wasted his talent
Ray was abled to get through that Philly defense
all i can say is 80s and 90s is the best boxing ever!
Not a fan of mayweather jr
That part....
Sugar was the champion of champions. He was pretty in the ring and out the ring. His weight class had the most talented boxers. And he was the one that finished his career on top.
The Goat pound for pound
Sugar Ray ROBINSON is the greatest pound for pound. Followed by the Greatest Muhammad Ali. No argument, no question. Period.
Sugar Ray Leonard one the great boxers of his era.Pound for pound one of the greatest fighters of his time.
Two warriors who will never give up.
Stevenson was a grown man Professional boxer sponsored by Castro to beat the young amateurs from other countries .in 3 round fights .
Mayweather was a tough cookie, but Ray wasn't unknown. Mayweather was hand-picked for Ray's next step.
I want to see a 1978 version of Sugar Ray VS Bud Crawford.
Super cool, big respect for Mayweather Sr.
I don't find he fought like
Ali did more moving and Ray fought in the inside more
Ray & may man one of the greatest fight in the world! 🌎
Sugar Ray looked old for his age now young for his age🤯
I am so thankful to watch him box!❤
Man...Mr. Mayweather Sr. was tough AF. He was taking some hard shots and then coming back by the next round, still wanting to knock Mr. Leonard's head off. Great bout!
This how I expected Deven Haney to fight Garcia fight with your heart
Ray leanard easily penetrate the Philly shell..😮😮..He's an expert
When other fighters do that taunting show-off stuff they get criticized. When Ray did it it was applauded.
He was never rude or mean to his opponents after he fights so it was acceptable like Ali
What a honor to have Howard Cossel call the fight
Everybody start from somewhere wow the Legend
Ray was known to all those in boxing who should have known of him as a boxer since b4 the 1976 Olympic Games. He was an "unmistakable, undeniable talent!!!" Trust me, he snuck up on no one!!!
80's boxing at its best. These guys fought, not what you see now... Dancing with the Stars.
This fight was on September 1978 and I was born November 1978 I've been fighting every since
Ray Leonard Evander n floyd jr my favorite now Tank is
Never see anyone hit so hard and fast,...both fighters.
7:36 Sugar Ray is special to be able to throw that so fast…wow
One of the greatest boxers of all time.
honestly it don't matter who we think was the best fighter in those days they all went hell for leather and put their hearts into it and stood their ground to the best they could do their most never backed out of a fight even though a manager would say its not time to fight so and so they still did it in the end and that's what boxing was made great by
