Sad but true. It's the worlds temptations and desire, sin that we give into to fix the hurt rather than embracing it and using it to mold us into better men. There's one that roams the earth like a lion tempting us and looking to devour. He will offer you the world but of what gain is the world if you lose your soul? 1 Peter 5:8, KJV: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
I think Sylvester Stallone dragging him into Hollywood in the prime of his career, ruined him! It derailed his career and exposed him to the vices of that seedy town!
It was rumored he got HIV from sleeping around with alot of different women when he was boxing. I don't know how he got it but in the end it did kill him even if he was in denial about having it.
I met tommy Morrison on the job in Atlantic city back in the early 1990's I was a blackjack dealer at harrahs casino. He played at my table in a disguise when I said hello he asked me to keep it quiet as guys were always challenging him. He was very calm and didn't bet a lot of money but seemed pretty normal. Other fighters I've met were bone crusher smith, vinny pazienza, get this Joe Frazier lived in my town. We've had drinks at the local bar where he had Joe Frazier night he would collect money for charity. he was a great guy, he had a lot of scars on his face and head.
Nice read brother Not sure if you remember a guy called Jeff Harding the Australian light heavyweight world champ .Guys also wanted to fight him after he gave boxing away. Unfortunately for Jeff he turned into a drunk Could never understand why a person would want to fight a drunk especially a fighter of his calibre .A sad demise on Jeff's behalf but those guys giving it to him in bars were not men cowards Got off track a little this is about Tommy died so young .Gee he had a great left .RIP mate.

@@ralphcantrell3214 I always had a deep respect for the way Tommy never took advantage of an opponent, he had total natural strength, and he knew when an opponent was done. Unlike the dirty Mercer, who wanted to give Tommy brain damage.
I miss that era of boxing. Brings back memories of watching all these boxers and fights with my dad. Prime Channel, USA Network Tuesday Night Fights, HBO of course, heck even ABC had fights now and then. Man, the nostalgia hits hard, like Tommy's left hook.
I remember watching Holyfield vs. Tyson, had a whole group of people drove hours to come see it. Lasted like like 5 minutes and ended in disqualification... Great fights, but not a great time for sportsmanship. Although I guess there was always a darkside to every sport, boxing just really hit a rough patch there. Not many idols to look up to, regardless of their talent. Also kind of sad his nickname was "The Great White Hope", I'm not sure it's touched on here since I've only started it, but there was a lot of racism back then and 100 percent that's what that title was referring to. A lot of racism today too, but it was very common from my experience to see people explicitly rooting for their race to win the fight. Which is just such a stupid, pathetic piece of of human culture. Like it means anything.
i bought a big dish to watch boxing and I remember those networks, the ppv were friends packing the house but had to bring beer. even if they had to seat on the carpetI Great memory!
Remember...we are all passing through in this life...we all take for granted everything when we are young...but when we get old...we realized what we have wasted in life. Nothing is permanent in this world...even this world is not permanent... And tomorrow may never come....take care....miss you Tommy and Ali.
That's right, as young as we are, we topple mountains, but let's not forget that before us there were others better than us, and sickness and old age forgive no one and no one inherits the earth

He lived life in the fast lane but he was in his early 20s, being a top boxer and in a hit movie like Rocky I think many of us could have acted the same way. RIP Tommy
No, only a m@&$n acted that way. He didn’t know how to carry himself as a top figure athlete. He should have took care of his career and maintained his status. Later the women will come. He thought there won’t be enough women for him.
I didn't see the precision in Tommy that I did in Iron Mike, but that being said it isn't always necessary: Gene Fullmer beat Ray Robinson twice (plus 1 loss add 1 draw), and Sugar Ray way by far the more polished and precise boxer. I felt like Tommy never was the same after the Mercer fight. I think he sufdered actual brain damage. I was shocked he wasn't killed. I maintain to this day that the ref should have stopped it sooner. He was criminally derilect in letting any fighter take that kind of pummelling. To a casual fan ot would have seemed like a good shellacing, but I know a lot of boxing officials who were swearing at the TV by the time Morrison stunbled out of the corner, still taking Mercer's best shots to the head.
Repent to Jesus Christ “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” Psalms 143:8 NIV T
When I first saw Rocky V, I really liked Tommy, I was a kid and didn't know he was really a boxer until probably 10 years ago I came across his story. One thing I learned in life..no matter how tough we are, there's no worse battle then the ones in your head
Found out about Tommy Morrison from Rocky V believe or not back in 2012. Looked him up after that film, and wow was I stunned at how good he was. Strong, powerful punches and strong foundation. Sucks to see he was more at war with himself than with those he fought in the ring.
He was at war with his AIDS disease. Got to watch out what hookers/escorts/ drugs people do when theyre rich and famous. Unfortunately has catastrophic consequences.
He was a real class act! The way he doesn’t go beyond the knockout and just keep trying to hit. As soon as he saw they were done he walks away. Very professional. Love this dude, an outstanding fighter.
This was one of the best retrospective looks at a career I've ever seen. I grew up the 90's and somehow how was living under a rock because I never knew who Tommy was. I recently watched Rocky V for the first time in my life and I was so impressed by his ability and started to wonder if he was actually an actor or a real athlete. And then I found this video that taught me so much about him. I'm so heartbroken that his life ended so tragically and that he isn't here right now to keep passing on his knowledge to future generations. Truly one of the best fighters I've ever seen. Much respect to Tommy "The Duke" Morrison. And thank you to whoever made this video and cut it all together. That's no easy task.
He was an amazing fighter, but he gave up all that when he chose to fight in the ring and risked so many lives when he knew he was HIV positive. its a bloody sport. He avoided those blood tests for several years. so no one would find out. that was very sad.
It was proven after his death that he had been tested many times and knew he was Hiv positive and choose to deny it.He had even said His didn't cause Aids and said that nobody died from it.He was a good boxer but didn't have any defense .He didn't protect himself in and outside of the ring.He took way too many risking in his life and had unprotected sex.He gave many woman Aids. He was not the best person and only thought about himself. He was fun to watch but after found out about his life and the details .I lost all respect for him.John Wayne's family said Tommy was not related to him. It is hard to respect a person that has no character and can't tell the truth.Later ..@@melisachuman9216
It's great that he had intestinal fortitude to achieve his goals but sad that on this path, many like him become blindly self destructive through carelessness. Thanks for the documentary, it filled in allot of blanks for me about Tommy.

To see such a strong man reduced to what was shown here is a tragedy. He was the best at his profession for a moment, he must have worked incredibly hard to get there. Who can say they wouldn’t have lived as extravagantly as he did, with that kind of success? He’s a legend and we can’t all be. Rest In Peace Tommy Morrison, you fought bravely and inspired millions of others.
He was a really hard puncher, but he was never "the best at his profession". He was not even a top 5 Heavyweight at any point in his career. I loved Tommy Morrison, and was crushed when he lost to that asshole Ray Mercer. But I would never go as far to say he was the best. I do admit I would've loved to see a prime Morrison vs. prime Tyson though. I think a prime Tyson would win early because pre Douglas, Mike had a good chin, and could have likely absorbed Tommy's big punches or would have not been hit with his head movement, bobbing and weaving. I could easily see Mike putting The Duke down with one punch though. Perhaps an uppercut like he put Jose Ribalta down with or a devastating overhand right like he put Larry Holmes down the first time with. The difference is, Ribalta and Holmes, especially Holmes, had a granite chin. Tommy Morrison's chin was always like a fine piece of china.
@@reneep9972 well said. I love how the Tyson haters claim Tommy would beat Mike because he lost to Mercer and Tyson never fought him. The fact is Tyson and Mercer weren’t really the same generation, Mercer just wasn’t there yet.
@@reneep9972 I wish we got to see one fight in the early 90's between Tyson and Morrison --- Tyson probably woulda won but I think if Tommy got in a few of those devastating lefts then I think Iron Mike woulda hit the canvas and went to sleep! Oh man, that fight would been so huge.

No!! Tommy had offensive skills, a huge punch, speed and a big heart.....but he didn't have the chin. He was never going to succeed against the contenders because he couldn't take a big punch without going down.

Wow, this channel really knows how to capture the essence of boxing legends, and the Tommy Morrison story is no exception. It's a poignant reminder that talent can shine incredibly bright but can also dim too soon. Morrison was a beast in the ring, a knockout machine that had fans on the edge of their seats.

I sometimes wonder if people just listen to what they want. His life changed from the day he was misdiagnosed. HIV was a death sentence then and didn't justify the life he lived because of that, but no one has the right to judge another, especially the dead.
Tommy Gun is the real deal. Sure, he lost one street fight, but after he realized he's a prize fighter, that's where his strength lies, and look at him now? A total powerhouse.

A great deal can be said about his character in watching his fights. As soon as he hit his opponent and they started to drop he stepped back. Can clearly tell he had a great deal of respect for the profession. I knew he partied, but who the hell wouldn't coming from nothing and rising to the top. He said he wished he would have been a better role model. Tommy you were a damn good one, makes me sad for you to think you were not, rest in piece.

Great video. Tragic story. I was born a year before Tommy. Followed his progress here in the UK. He was in the same space as some of the greats, Tyson, Lewis, klitschko’s etc. Could have been really great with the right people around him.

Didn't have the chin to be a great. Had all the power and speed, but he couldn't take a hit. Some boxers are just born with that one flaw, him and Amir Khan being two good examples. Fantastic offensive fighters, just glass chins.

If Tommy had stayed focused and not let his lifestyle get out of control he could have been one of the all time greats. As it is, he had one of the best left hooks ever and he was a devastating knockout artist.
This is where a good manager would have stepped in and look for ways to help him. People took advantage of him it seems. Made sure he had women and booze. Never realizing the potential outcome. Sad story 😔, really and many more out there.
sounds like Mike
100%, he rarely fought in top condition, his fight against Foreman was the only one once he got big that he fought without boozing and partying the entire way up until the fight. When he was focussed and in top condition few boxers alive in their prime would have been a decent challenge, degeneracy is a far worse vice than is currently understood.
the only thing that derailed his career was a false positive from a PCR test the inventor of said test Kary Mullis stated right up until his death the PCR test isn't a diagnostic tool
I grew up watching all of these 90's boxers and they either made it big or most got tangled in that downward spiral out of control. I remember watching Tommy with my dad.
Its crazy that Tim Tomashek ended his career with 53 wins and 12 losses regardless of stat padding he was just having fun and was very entertaining to watch.

@@chrispudd1815 Morrison wasn't gay. He didn't have AIDS. The boxing insiders couldn't stand a white man of Morrison's caliber in their midst, so they came up with the fake AIDS diagnosis. I remember his interviews after his first ever loss. He had admitted that he had let the fame and fortune of Rocky distract him but in way that he put all on him, no excuses, just accountability. So fascinating that his character goes through the same thing.

The Tommy Morrison story is one of the most epic tragedies in all of sports.
Had the pleasure of meeting him twice. Once in Virginia when he was training at VMI for an upcoming fight and he came in the Arcade I was working at and the second time in Vegas at the weigh in the day before he got his HIV diagnosis. He was on top of the world that day and it all came crashing down the next day. My father and I were at the fight the next day and they announced due to medical complications that Tommy would not be fighting. I found out on the news when I got back to L.A. where I was living then, about the HIV diagnosis. He was a true warrior and at least he held one of the main Heavyweight belts, even though only briefly. His left hook ranks among the greats in boxing. I will never forget what he said to me in Vegas the last time I saw him. He was to have fought Arthur Weathers as a tune up fight for Tyson. I asked him when he was gonna knock Weathers out and Tommy said, "As soon as he makes a mistake." RIP Tommy

I watched a lot of boxing in my younger years but I never heard of Tommy Morrison even after watching these clips. Without a doubt, he was one hell of a hard hitting boxer.
