What was so impressive was the respect both fighters showed for each othe- touching gloves at the beginning of each round etc. This was classic boxing.
I've never seen Duran give anyone the amount of respect that he was showing the Hitman. Touching gloves before the fight, extending his hand to give Hearns five a couple of times different. You could tell that he had a different kind of respect for Hearns than he had for Sugar Ray.
I think he knew he was doomed, his training had not gone well and his old trainer Ray Arcel had retired, his weight had ballooned and he had to lose weight overnight. If he had being really confident he would not have behaved so meekly and polite.
Took me watching this to really see it. I would show this to people as to why not to judge a book by its cover. Well, no shortage of heart compared to a man on the street. But Duran’s “no mas” fight will forever associate him with a lack of heart. In this fight, heart had nothing to do with it. He couldn’t show heart or lack of it because he got bombed. The last punch was nuclear, but the two body shots causing the second knockdown were so violent. One of the most dominant, devastating championship fights ever.
Hearns was younger and fresher at 25 with only 2 fights since 23. The knockout punch was a thing of beauty. Duran was definitely a warrior but coming down from 190lbs to 154lbs at age 32/33 was to much when facing a future all time great. I love the respect the Hearns paid Duran throughout the fight by touching gloves before and after rounds.

Way more power is in the hands of the sanctioning bodies and promoters.
Deontay Wilder please watch this fight to see how the "Hitman" was able to disguise his righthand by going to the body and then faking his opponent into dropping his guard for an offensive opening. Everyone knew that Hearns wanted to land that shot but he knew how to deliver it with setups. See how Hearns purposely reset the action, using a quick stepback (see Steph Curry), even when he was able to land his shot, to establish the appropriate distance to avoid any BS check hooks or counters. HOWEVER, please ignore the legs of Hearns but definitely key in on his great cardiovascular conditioning. See how Hearns was able to unload a flurry of 4-7 quick and crisp combinations without gassing out and losing balance -- it is called roadwork!
Wilder is light years behind Hearns' boxing IQ. In order for him to get anywhere near that level he would have to start his career all over again and actually learn to box. Wilder is a one-dimensional, low-skilled, one-punch boxer with the IQ of a dodo bird. It's too late for him.

I agree with you. This Hearns was a world destroyer. I think they were worried about Duran and the Kronk gym put on a perfect camp. This version of Hearns could have challenged anyone in history at that weight.
Interesting fact: This throwback was put up to celebrate Tommy Hearns' birthday, but Roberto Duran's birthday is June 16, 1951. This fight took place June 15, 1984, which means that Duran was on the receiving end of one of the most vicious one punch knockouts in boxing history the day BEFORE his own birthday.
i tend to think that Roberto Duran moved up too many weight class categories. I don't see the point of him fighting Hearns. Hearns has the top body of a heavy weight and the skinny long legs to keep weight still light enough that he could fight in the "wrong" weight category.
Roberto Duran was known for fighting on his birthday. I only know that because I have the same birthday as Duran and my brother Pat Lawlor fought Duran three times beating him once in Vegas in 1991.
Duran was outfoquet, dissmotivated and thinking in anything but boxing, I think he was just thinking about how much money he was collectiing and wanted to get outside the ring fast to keep moving along with his own life. With Duran in prime (like he was on his fight againts Hagler) Duran would have won probably by knockout. Of course this is an after all carriers analysis. It's good that duran came back and get the middleweight championship regardless.

The gentleman ‘hit man.’👍👏Class act.
That was by far one of the most brutal knockout's ever.

Crazy because Duran not only had hands of stone, but also had a chin of stone. This fight just goes to show how hard Hearns could really hit.
The thing is that punch would shattered a stone.
I mean Duran was older here too and Hitman was in his prime, still impressive though
There's a reason why Hearns could go as high as Cruiserweight. His power was easily the greatest amongst the Fabulous Four (as a balance to his weak chin).
Also shows how hard Haglers chin was because Hearns hit him repeatedly and he just walked him down. Hagler was the toughest boxer that ever fought. Him and the bronx Bull.
@@megadave1197 I agree and Ali is right up there too.
That was vicious. Hearns looked super human in this fight. Combination of speed and power was unmatched.

That last shot was as square and hard as they get. Brutal.
This was the best Hearns. That was a vicious knockout! His hand speed and power with activity was spot on.

Jab to the body set up that right up top all night for Hearns... Duran had chin and heart for taking even 1 of those!!!
Surgical!
He didn't like Sugar Ray either. Thomas Hearns didn't have very many enemies because he was a real boxer and sportsman, all the way through.
Hearns at first appearance is this lanky fellow who doesn't look like could do much damage. But you start seeing how quick his hands are and realize there is indeed intent behind those punches. I gotta say the hairdo also seems a bit laughable in this day and age, but damn I would not want to get into a street brawl with this guy...ever.

Hearns looked absolutely like the greatest fighter that ever lived in this fight. He was so quick and on target with his punches. @@centinela24542 you talk as though you know Duran personally. Did you guys have a conversation after the fight? if so tell me more. Or are you just making excuses?
Tommy was my all time favourite boxer. So entertaining, he always gives you 110 %. The haggler fight was the best fight I've ever seen.
Beautiful style, so relaxed and fast. Hearns my all time top 3 boxers for sure.
Motor City Cobra always seemed like a good nickname for Hearns. His punches seemed to lash out like a snake striking.
Duran still was an amazing and all time great Hearns was just the worst possible match up for him💯..He was the epitome of kryptonite for the great Duran💯
I'm sure Duran knew this was a bad fight for him but back in the day they didn't duck each other. They new what was at steak and just went for it like men.
That was one of the absolute hardest punches I've ever seen a fighter take! Holy cow! It landed so clean too!
Yea you could hear the crisp. In fact those are the deadliest, because it was WIDE open.
Do you think that punch would have knocked out Marvin hagler who in my view was as tough as they come.
@@stephendavies8510 Honestly, I think that punch would have knocked out ANYONE! Just look how clean it landed! And it was so f**king hard too!
That made me literally say damn hella loud….
@@ghostface8443 For real! Lol
5:48 THE LOOK OF "AM I STILL ALIVE,BECAUSE I CANT FEEL A THING"..
THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL KNOCK OUT..
I was saying the same thing 😂😂😂😂
Tommy Hearns had a jab like a jack hammer here
Everyone is talking about Thomas Hearns right hand power shot but it is his left jab that should be praised. I’ve never seen anyone set up that power right hand so perfectly.
