    It's crazy to think that Ray Leonard was 25 years old and Tommy Hearns was 22. This is still the best fight that I've ever seen in arguably the greatest Welterweight era of all time. 15 rounds, horse haired and foam mixed gloves, same day weigh ins and only 2 titles per division.

    This is the first fight I remember in my life. I listened to it from my bedroom as my parents, who had invited my aunts and uncles over (and some others) were all watching the fight. The whole house was full of cigarette smoke and I was lying in bed just listening to the action. My uncles were yelling at the tv, "Come on Sugar Ray, go Sugar Ray, Go!" As I lay in bed, listening to all this action, everybody our in the living room munching on chips, drinking a few beers and hollering at the tv, I knew it must have been great - even though I'd never seen a fight before. I was only 7 years old. I could hear the concern in my uncle's voice during the fight, concern for Sugar Ray. It was obvious to me that Sugar Ray must have been doing not so well, and all my folks were pulling for him. It was so exciting to listen as Sugar Ray pulled the rabbit out of the hat in the 14th, and the whole living room exploded. It wasn't until many years later that I had a chance to see this fight on the internet. It's every bit as great I knew it was.

I use to blaim cocaine (cuz leonard isnt my favorite and i think most peoplebelieved he was using it) for his eneregy reserves. But the older i get the more i admire him. I still think he may have used the drug, but not while he was fighting. He just had the heart of a lion. The hitman crammed that 6ft 2" frame into 154lbs. Thats just awesome in its own right. It made all the difference, Hearns had never been hit that hard before, ever. When Hearns dropped his guard low to protect from Ray's wicked body shots, his head was a prime target. I think that Ray nailed Hearns in the liver with that left hook, must have been extremely painful for Hearns.

      Many, many years ago saw an interview of Sugar Ray Leonard. He discussed that he would hit the body until the hands came down. Then he would hit the head. Last moments of round 13 and round 14. Tommy's hands were coming down and Leonard started with the right hand to the head. What an era. We could watch Pryor, Arguello, Mancini, Duran, Leonard, Hearns and my favorite Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Leonard was awesome but Hagler just had that something. They were all giants.

    One of the greatest fights I’ve had the pleasure to witness. The two best welterweight champions clashing when both still in their prime. Both excellent boxers and very skilful. This was a high level technical fight, not one clinch in the whole fight. There’s were bombs and lightning combinations thrown from both fighters, and plenty of back and forth. As the rounds went on Sugar was clearly the stronger, and once he got Tommy going, he didn’t let him off the hook. The finish was dramatic and.the fight is one of the most memorable and exciting fights to grace our screens. Two Legends.

      I have to agree with that analysis, Bassman 1000. Leonard had figure out what to do with Tommy's height and reach. Ordinarily, Ray would have been more aggressive, but had to be mindful of walking into Hearns' powerful right hand. Unfortunately for Tommy, Leonard was a really smart, crafty fighter. He also had a better chin, superior cardio/stamina as well as speed/accuracy. He would need all of these things to beat a young "Cobra." This was truly like a battle between a Cobra and a Mongoose.

Football, basketball, baseball, and hockey are all sports where you can earn a 7 or 8 figure paycheck and not die of a brain disease at age 60 (well maybe not football).

    Leonard's boxing was homage to Ali, he moved in a very similar manor and had exceptionally fast hands, stick and move and this technique was exactly what was needed this fight. Leonards stamina and hands speed in 13 and 14 rounds was something else. Hearns gave him one hell of fight and showed he had many facets to his boxing. Both Great Champions

    Welterweights just don't move like those two did compared to those in this decade of ours considering this fight was set for 15 rounds. What a pace, and two belts on the line. And Its a hell of a reflection of all the great fighters that preceded both Ray and Tommy because in their fighting youth I'm guessing there was only one belt on the line.
    If we are never to be rid of all these sanctioning body's we have any time soon , then i would propose that all unification fights from now on are set for 15 rounds as a compromise.

    • @mayklcekson5511
      @mayklcekson5511 2 роки тому +8

      @PJ Rivera ; Not sure about that. I would say that fighters back then from the beginning of the gloved era were mentally tougher than those of today in particular because they fought more often in a single year , and sometimes more than twice in one month. Scars were not given time to heal , and skills yet not refined. But we can exclude those fighters like Jack Johnson , Benny Leonard , and later Willie Pep from the equation. Your always going to get fighters way ahead of their time's in terms of their skills over others of their own decade.
      I would say fighters of today are under better management and are more nourished, and are generally paid better all around. And Its easy to assume that skills evolve over time because of knowledge passing from trainer to trainer , but at the same time its easy to assume that some of those skills could well be lost before fights were recorded on film.
      However on reflection i would say that the fighters of today *ought* to be superior
      than those of yesteryear , but not as mentally hardened or challenged.

    • @mayklcekson5511
      @mayklcekson5511 2 роки тому +4

      @PJ Rivera ; Yep , that's because of all those dangly belts hanging around their waists. A three time whatever champion today wouldn't mean jack to those of yesteryear. And if they have a LOSS on their records , they loose their marketing appeal. I mean all the greats lost , that's what made them great because they reversed it.
      Also humanity is growing taller. The prime middleweight division has now become the supermiddleweight division because the average person is getting taller.
      Look at 'AJ' for example. Cannot feint , cannot understand what or why the need to feint is so important. He's too methodical. Sometimes the trainers have to let them loose , you cannot train a grizzly to be a bunny.
      We have to do away with them b'stard belts 👍
