I don't think it's so much his conditiong. I think it's simply being so tall and gangly he loses more coordination as he tries then his more stocky opponents.
Ray always my fav but Tommy took this one and being the gentleman he has always been he took the decision like the champ he truly was. Even when he broke his hand during the Haggler fight he kept silent to let Marvin have his moment. True warrior and champ. Just wish he had taken care of his finances better.
@Erik Murray Hearns won the fight. He didn't get robbed. They were both has beens by this time. The first fight they had back in the day was a dog fight with Leonard winning by TKO! I don't feel that Leonard didn't deserve the Hagler fight. Hagler did absolutely nothing to Leonard.
Both of you are correct, robbed without a gun. I know Hearns personally, we both trained under Emanuel Stewart R.I.P., we both as many were amateur fighters at that time in 72, he was special then very talented fighter in Detroit's Kronk Gym on the westside.
What a war. This fight says everything about each of these two warriors, champions to the very end. Seems like Sugar might have gotten away with one there, he got knocked down a few times which should have given Thomas the advantage. But, you hate to see either man loose a fight like this. Thank Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray for the amazing memories...
Hearns dominated the first half of the 12th, but one judge took the fight from Hearns by scoring it 10-8 Leonard ...a 10-8 round with no knockdown has to be total domination...clearly, the other two judges got it right with 10-9's
I always remember my uncle telling me when I was a kid, the only way Leonard would ever lose would be by KO. If he was left standing at the end of the fight and it went to the cards, he would win every time. This was told to me at the beginning of the Hagler fight. We all see how that turned out.
The highest compliment "bullshit "that day tommy the hit man knew he was the champ and won nothing more satisfying then knowing you are the people's champion 😬👍🏽respect mr hitman
Con Hagler ocurrió lo mismo, le robaron la pelea. Seguramente, por una cuestion de negocios turbios, Leonard habrá tenido el respaldo de la mafia para haber sido favorecido de esta manera tan descarada
Hearns won clearly, everybody saw that clearly. The point is that a lot of people see Leonard as the "MISS UNIVERSE" of Don King and don`t wanna put their feet on earth!!!!!!!!!!!
I have watched boxing since 1970, and in the new 12 rounds games a 7-5 could easily be 6-6 or 5-7 in the eyes of different judges have different ways to see the score by different ways to understand a fight.
By numbers it was 114 to 112 or 113 to 110, by rounds it was 6 Hearns 5 Leonard 1 tie or even 5 to 4 with 3 tie rounds. I despise Leonard but he didn't get blown out in this fight. Hearns was the winner but did not dominate. Also 2 knockdowns doesn't automatically give someone a victory in a closely contested fight such as this. Just like the Hagler fight, Leonard fought inspired and had more energy but Marvelous still did enough to win by a point or 2 ,however in Vegas we know who gets the benefit of the doubt.
@@mikefields2243 Maybe he should have but didn't Hearns take alot of shots and the bell saved him it was a 10 -8 round for Leonard. If this fight was not in Vegas it was a sure Hearns win. Any fight in Vegas makes me cringe. I agree that Hearns won but he didn't dominate and as I said previously 2 knockdowns doesn't guarantee a win especially in a close fight.
Growing up in Detroit during this era, I was always a huge Hearns fan. Both these guys were expert marksmen with their fists & deserve a lot of respect. I'll leave it at that
Everyone is missing the point I like both these fighters but I would rather watch them playing with their grandkids then a fight where their skills have declined then watching a fight with two great fighter past their prime
Close fight, but Leonard has one hell of a chin and one hell of a tank. He finished all over the top of Hearns and did enough. He also threw more punches and landed more punches. Leonard's fight.
Leonard wasn’t overrated at all, and Hearns wasn’t underrated. The problem was that Hearns was great offensively but poor defensively. So, while he would score lots of points, he was also an easy target to hit. It is very difficult to score a fighter like Hearns. That’s why he lost the fight. Hearns threw and landed the harder shots, but at times, Leonard seemed to out-land him.
@@DeCurtaRican Bullshit!!!!!! Hearns clearly won this fight. Also, Ray is overrated. This fight and the Hagler fight he got lucky. Also, he was losing the first fight against hearns but cos of his China chin, he lost. Idgaf what the scorecards say about this fight, Hearns should've won this fight.
When you see a reff stopping the count and watching constantly over his shoulder to see if the boxer is on the neutral corner, you can really tell this was fixed and Leonard had to be saved.......on each count the reff gives him 3 or 4 extra seconds.........not to mention Leonard should have had at least 2 times a point deduction for punching Hearns way after the bell.

how in the hell did one judge score the 12th 10-8 Leonard? that took the win from Hearns, who dominated and I mean dominated the first half of the round
Oh, give me a break. Leonard got robbed of a knockdown score back in the fight when these two were in their prime. And here in this fight, we allowed Tommy to fight like still in his 20s here and dang near 4 pounds heavier than his near-retirement opponent. So it ain't like we didn't do NUTHIN' favorable for Tommy. In fact, we might have done too much for him. The right thing was done here.
' Leonard got robbed of a knockdown score back in the fight when these two were in their prime.' do tell...I've seen that fight 4-6x and have no idea what you're talking about
The crowd exclaimed "bullshit!" after the fight was pronounced a draw. They were right. Unfortunately for Leonard, not even biased (or bought off) judges could deny Terry Norris his well-deserved decision over Leonard 20 months later.
I initially thought they stopped the first fight too early also. But Tommy didn't complain about the stoppage so what can you say.Plus Ray was about to finish him any.But Tommy was robbed in this one.Sugar put some tremendous hurt on him in some spots, but if you score it Tommy was clearly the winner.
This was a classic and a great fight like the first Leonard-Hearns fight, two all time great fighters going at it. This is when boxing was great. Ray always my fav but Tommy took this one and being the gentleman he has always been he took the decision like the champ he truly was. Even when he broke his hand during the Haggler fight he kept silent to let Marvin have his moment. True warrior and champ. Just wish he had taken care of his finances better.
🥊 Hitman is a legend 🥊
Hearns won that fight. Ripped off tho.
bullshit
Holy shit that was a fight! No wonder these two are legendary in the sport.
A worthy fight, the best of the best these two (ll), still watching 👀 and thanks for sharing the clips @JimmyPrice 04/18/2020.
We use to have boxing!!! I remember house parties, and everyone enjoying real fights.. gone are the days, thanks for the memories 🙂 😔
Hitman won that. 2 knock downs plus equal punches landed. Ray only landed 10 more which probably happened in the last round. Politics
Probably thos were the ones he throw after the bell.
Hearns definitely got Robbed.
My bad Erik! He did get robbed. A draw??? No way!
WHEN BOXING WAS REAL!!!!
Warriors , that was the greatest boxing era
Those were the days my friend. Best boxing Era.
Hearns clearly won
clearly kept holding for dear life ,
I remember this fight I was pissed at 13 years old hitman got robbed with no gun
I was the same age and i was pissed...Hitman Won
But then, two near-knockouts by Leonard for a couple of full round dominations.
nastaran shafiinoori 22
On the other hand, Sugar got two near-knockouts
Hearns dominated the first half of the 12th, but one judge took the fight from Hearns by scoring it 10-8 Leonard ...a 10-8 round with no knockdown has to be total domination...clearly, the other two judges got it right with 10-9's
Naw. Hearns didn't do any damage in that round 12. But Leonard did
I always remember my uncle telling me when I was a kid, the only way Leonard would ever lose would be by KO. If he was left standing at the end of the fight and it went to the cards, he would win every time. This was told to me at the beginning of the Hagler fight. We all see how that turned out.
That didn't happen in the Duran fight, it went to the cards, Duran won thankfuly.
The highest compliment "bullshit "that day tommy the hit man knew he was the champ and won nothing more satisfying then knowing you are the people's champion 😬👍🏽respect mr hitman
Admiro a ambos boxeadores, especialmente a Leonard...Pero gano Tommy Hearns señores!
Leonart genio .
Hearns imbencible en ese momento .
No eran de la misma categoria (peso)
Hearns got robbed
So did Marvin Hagler.
@@madman2028 NO, Hagler has only himself to blame for that. He gave that fight to Leonard.
Later days Sugar Ray agreed Hearns won that match.
Robbery and leonard was my favorite fighter at this time
Golden age of boxing 🥊
Hearns won clearly, everybody saw that clearly. The point is that a lot of people see Leonard as the "MISS UNIVERSE" of Don King and don`t wanna put their feet on earth!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember watching this fight. I scored it 7-5 Tommy.
@@merveilmeok2416 I definitely agree. These 12 rounders make it harder than 15 rounds. Smaller body of work equals larger controversy. Lol
eac 123 with two 10-8 rounds Tommy wins that fight.
There was just something about score card judges and Leonard. Always seemed to go his way. By accident, I think not. PS... Hagler won his fight too.
Leonard beat Hagler fair and square. Gave him a boxing lesson.
He drubbed that bald head back and forth like a punching bag
@@asmuklerget some glasses.
Growing up in Detroit during this era, I was always a huge Hearns fan. Both these guys were expert marksmen with their fists & deserve a lot of respect. I'll leave it at that
Hears WON
Two times Leonard go down..... Thomas Won this figth
But then again, in this fight Thomas was TWICE pounded on the ropes and put near knock-out.
halcondelared. how many rounds did Leonard beat hearns all over the ring he could barely hang on.
Everyone is missing the point I like both these fighters but I would rather watch them playing with their grandkids then a fight where their skills have declined then watching a fight with two great fighter past their prime
It takes a knock out to beat the man winning with points and sugar had more points
Close fight, but Leonard has one hell of a chin and one hell of a tank. He finished all over the top of Hearns and did enough. He also threw more punches and landed more punches. Leonard's fight.
116 - 110 Tommy Hearns!!!
@Righteous GET OFF THR PHONE,!
@Righteous yes more bjs?
@Righteous what does that even meen?
@Righteous THATS RACIST!
@Righteous GET THE FUC* OFF THE PHONE!
The hitman clearly won this fight, its just that leonard was so overrated and tommy was very underrated fighter....hearns was clearly a legend period.
I remember this fight!..
When boxing was an art
Add this to the Hagler beat Leonard debate!
First fight ok , but Hit man Hearns won this fight .
leonard was the "chosen" one and it showed....he lost
the Mayweather of the 80s
This is the real boxing.
Hearns won this one, no doubt about it
The judges should be embarressed.
Don't know how Hearns didn't get the win in this fight
It''s because Leonard was ahead on points, and Hearns on KDs and rounds. But Hearns deserved to win.
Mafia y corrupción. Que asco.
Hearns got robbed.Knocked Leonard down twice in the fight. Won more than 1/2 the rounds. How is this match a draw? Horrendous judging!!
Hearns is a bitch, grabbing Leonard all the time
@@anasbourqqia6306: AND Leonard was a bitch, punching on the break, punching after the bell rang--again and again and again.
Outright theft, Hearns winner!
Leonard was the media darling, could do no wrong. Shameless. This is why boxing slowly became crap
These 2 Legends deserve a statue after the last 2 rounds
When you see a reff stopping the count and watching constantly over his shoulder to see if the boxer is on the neutral corner, you can really tell this was fixed and Leonard had to be saved.......on each count the reff gives him 3 or 4 extra seconds.........not to mention Leonard should have had at least 2 times a point deduction for punching Hearns way after the bell.
Lol you serious mate? Hearns punched ray after the bell multiple times in their first fight, grow up your bias is showing.
@@jacobsaunders1092 Ok, then lets invent new rules
@@nicolashrv if your gonna penalise one fighter you have to penalise the other if he commits the same infraction, even in this fight Hearns hit ray late but you chose only to wish to penalise ray?? I'm glad your not reffing this match mate
@@jacobsaunders1092 dude, just use your brain. I don't care what the other ref did. IN THIS FIGHT, THIS REF was protecting Leonard. I don't care if Dempsey took 14 seconds and got help to get back in the ring against Firpo. That doesn't mean after that all refs should do what the fuck they want.
@@nicolashrv dude rewatch this fight, hearns hit ray after the bell as well l, as I stated previously
how in the hell did one judge score the 12th 10-8 Leonard? that took the win from Hearns, who dominated and I mean dominated the first half of the round
Naah. Hearns did absolutely no damage at all in that round 12. But Leonard did.
then 10-9 Hearns got robbed.
' Leonard got robbed of a knockdown score back in the fight when these two were in their prime.' do tell...I've seen that fight 4-6x and have no idea what you're talking about
If there’s no knock down then the last round should of been a 10-9 round in favor of Leonard no question. But 10-8 round? Cmon. Straight rip off
Hearns clearly won the fight, but Leonard missed the opportunity to put him away in the 12th. Back when boxing was a gladiator sport.
The crowd exclaimed "bullshit!" after the fight was pronounced a draw. They were right. Unfortunately for Leonard, not even biased (or bought off) judges could deny Terry Norris his well-deserved decision over Leonard 20 months later.

As far as I'm concerned, that was a slap in the face to Hearns... Talk about no respect 💯
Yeah it was straight B.S.!!!!
Come on. I love Ray but Hitman won this fight big time.
They did Tommy dirty af not once but twice!!!!!
Hitman got screwed in this one. Good thing a title wasn’t on the line.
Hahahahahahahahaha!!
Tommy shouldn't lose that fight. Blind judges
I liked Hearns fighting style his jab is the best in the business.
It’s about merchandising.... Sugar Ray Leonard the breakfast cereal, Sugar Ray Leonard the lunchpail, Sugar Ray Leonard the flamethrower...
Hearns in '89 still had alot left in the tank. Ray, not so much. Hearns was badly robbed in this fight.
They stopped the First fight too soon as Hearns was still on His feet and a Champion. They wanted Golden boy Leonard to Win as usual.
Hearns was not going to win that first fight. He would've gotten KO'd.
He totally dominated and beat Leonard throughout that fight, though.
They stopped the fight so Hearns wouldn't get killed...
No. During round twelve round Listen to the worried crowd as Ray starts to knock Thomas out. They know that's it for Thomas.
I always felt that way too...the world was in love with Ray and the stoppage was too soon.
This was a classic and a great fight like the first Leonard-Hearns fight, two all time great fighters going at it. This is when boxing was great. You didn't see Sugar, Hearns, Haglar, Duran ducking each other, they all got W's and took some L's. They didn't avoid fighting each other trying to maintain perfect boxing records, these cats had heart.
SRL would have a very different legacy without judges carrying him vs Hagler & Hearns.
Absolutely Hagler won that fight!
Loved Tommy hearns. Unlike Leonard he never ducked anybody.
Sugar fought Hearns twice, Duran 3 times, Haglar once among others, so I don't know what you mean by ducking homie.
I remember how pissed I was when I saw this like the first time and Hearns was obviously robbed. I’m just as pissed now if not more 40 years later damn.
Same judge who gave Leonard a win over Hagler !
Different judge. But they both sucked, that's true.
halleck3 The "judge" I was referring to was Dalby Shirley from Great Britain - - either the dumbest or most corrupt boxing judge in the last 50 years !!
Oh yeah, Shirley sucks too....
shockadellick 2 KO are a victory.
I was a Hagler fan, but Leonard did beat him. Watch the fight again.
This is on of the best fightive seen in a long time I can watch this over and over again
