Therapist reacts to Vicarious by Tool

  • Therapist analyzes the lyrics to Vicarious by Tool to discuss the ways in which people often find enjoyment from the pain and suffering of others. The song discusses the reality that hostility toward others and toward ourselves often rises up within us and it's important to be cognizant of the ways we direct that hostility. We can direct it toward things that actually need to be destroyed.

If you “bop” to the tempo or “speed of the song” instead of the time signature the polyrhythms and how they fit together makes more sense, it’s the only way I’ve been able to play it properly and still know where the f I am in the song.

Back in the 80s and 90s I called this kind of art evil music. After PTSD recovery, if there is such a condition, I realize the thought that went into this creation. 1989-1990 and 15 years afterward I could not speak of my experience because it was so incredible that most people wouldn't even be able to imagine it. I now know that I am not alone or confined to my mental space.

This album came out 18 years ago, and this song is more relevant now than it was back then. It's everything she said, but in simpler terms its about how society literally gets off on other people's misery and tragedy, and now that social media and viral videos have taken the place of the very limited nightly news show or newspaper, that disconnection with reality and humanity has gone exponential.

    • @colinburroughs9871

@@colinburroughs9871 agreed, my point is that the wealth of tragedy found now on social media vs back then is night and day. There are entire channels on this platform alone that solely broadcasts horrific vehicle accidents, another that shows police body cams of violent incidents. You can search for all sorts of violence or the atrocities of war and view it within seconds right now…. 18 years ago there was no venue like this for that level of vicarious viewing.

    Interesting personal experience and observation:
    Relating to this song:
When my second husband and I were happily married, we actually lost friends. However, when I was going through a terrible first marriage, I had way more “friends”.
I just couldn’t believe that these so called friends couldn’t be happy for us and maybe come away with a positive outlook that perhaps they would find happiness as well.
I lost my husband to cancer. I lost him way too soon. But I’m grateful that I got to have the short 11 years that we had. I learned so much from him.
    ❤❤

      @DUKE_of_RAMBLE Місяць тому +1

This might be wrong, but maybe you lost friends because you two were happy... Happy to be with each other all the time. Happy to do everything together. You lost friends because you, in a sense, didn't need them... Your husband filled the role that certain friends filled, individually.
As I see it, that made him all the more spectacular of a person... and for that, I'm extremely sorry for your loss. 😔
      ✌️♥️🤘

I've never taken the lyrics to say that we derive "joy" from the suffering of others, I've taken it to be something much more basic, as in a hunger that needs fed, with zero emotion at all. Just something we're drawn to because there's this part of our psyche that needs fed.

  • @michaelacappabianca6461
    @michaelacappabianca6461 Місяць тому +3

I like your breakdown. I would just add to what you said about the pain making us separate ourselves from others. The opposite of that instead would be feeling empathy or sadness with them. It should hurt us to see others suffering if we’re empathetic and in reality that it could also BE us in that same situation. It comes from the dark parts of us or maybe otherwise refers to one’s ego which is just that a “self” identity. Consciousness is universal. We are all connected expressions living personal experiences. Tool is very powerful music and deeply profound. He’s definitely influenced a lot from psychedelics. Most of the artworks for Tool are made by Alex Grey. It gets deeply spiritual into that idea of oneness and collective consciousness

Loved it. I will definitely say with Tool, the music video has its own meaning alongside some parallels with the lyrics but not always. Adam Jones, the guitarist usually has done the videos. From what I remember from an old interview, it's that he wants the music video to go alongside the music but not necessarily lyrically. It's why it all seems abstract when trying to tie it to Maynard's lyrics.

I used to think tool was just music that you'd listen to while tripping on acid but I've come to realize that its much deeper than that. the acid trip is just the journey that tool takes you on while you're tripping. what they're really trying to teach you is very deep emotional processing. He actually explained this during the Salival tour (if you will). The difference in hate and anger. Destructive and constructive behaviors. Anger is constructive because instead of fighting someone, he’s gonna create a song and sing his anger out. Hate would have him doing physical damage to himself and others. It’s also why he doesn’t scream much anymore. When he does, it’s extremely selective and has major purpose. What good does it do someone to continue to scream about the same things over and over? There is no growth. I digress. Your reaction video had me in tears. Thank you for that. The more people begin to hear the depth of Tool, the more free we become… I know that sounds weird, but some of us cannot afford therapy lol. Tool is exactly that. A Tool, to be used, I believe, for the ultimate self awakening. Thank you again.

I’ve received so much joy from watching you listen to Tool. It seems silly to say but they’ve pulled me from some of the darkest places I’ve been. That being said I’ll throw my two cents in. H. , jimmy, the Patient, and the wings for Marie 10,000 days (wings part 2) consistently have tears streaming down my face

The Red Wedding is the prefect example of the joy that can be gotten from watching others suffer.

The song is about the nature of humanity. We feed the algorithm. We feed by tuning in to what the media is showing us. And it's inate. We are an animal that has always fed on tragedy. Overtaking each other. Fighting for the land. Money. Power. Etc...

It was hard for me to concentrate on the lyrics of this song and the musical instrumentations and instead my eyes were just mesmerized by the visual conceptions of the music video. Absolutely amazing and gorgeous video and major kudos to whoever created this visual work of art.

Exactly why I spam 🎉 or some claps whenever someone has shared a positive thing on social media. Need to build it up over the negativity. And when someone is struggling, letting them know an internet stranger is sending good vibes, or keeping them in thought hopefully also raises positivity (if there isn't some direct help that can be provided, that's always the first check lol).

This song has always meant to me, that there is a part in EVERYBODY that takes joy from others pain and suffering because it makes people feel better about themselves and their lives. I love Maynard for that because he'll pick at these topics and these mannerisms that people don't want to admit about themselves and act like they walk such a high road. Great pick on this one, I LOVE this song!

I think it’s also part of a modern survival instinct- looking for confirmation that we are safe, we’re making decisions that keep us out of the peril that we see around us. For some people I think there is a perverse joy, a masochistic satisfaction, but I also believe that most of us are simply happy to know we are safe.

Love this video. Its always symbolic interpretation of the songs. Many wont find any correlation in between the videos and songs, but there is. Not in a literal sense, more so symbolic or metaphoric. To many simple people the videos are a distraction.

Wasn’t following at the beginning but you really took this in an interesting direction, good analysis, I think those things that ‘deserve’ to be destroyed are precisely those tendencies that are driving the divide between us deeper and isolating us from our own sense of being humane and caring because it can be scary and painful

Admitting raises the possibility to deny... What one does not admit cannot be denied.
It's much about self reference, self awareness (The eye with the tentacles)...
And enlightment in the end, insight in the processes that make's one tick like one ticks. (My take.)
    Regards. 👍

I want to bring up the concept of compersion (uncountable)
    1. The feeling of joy one has experiencing another's joy, such as in witnessing a toddler's joy and feeling joy in response.
    2. The feeling of joy associated with seeing a loved one love another; contrasted with jealousy.
According to Wikipedia this was coined in reference as a romantic opposite to jealousy. However I have been using it as a non-romantic sense and to remind myself I CAN experience joy from another's joy and to actively look for it.

You mentioned that observing a persons good can make us reflect on ourselves in a poor way, and it struck a thought in me that I didn't know how to express until you the end of the video when you say we can direct this hostility we create in ourselves by observing anothers pain to be compassionate.
My thought is this; when a person finds joy, they typically share it in one way or another, whether it's a "look at me yay" way, or a "You can try this, it was good for me!" way. Maybe something we could try to do once we have become aware of these behaviours in ourselves is, use said hostility to reach a joy, share with a focus of helpful intent, and as the joyous person we can validate an observers hostile feelings from it, in order to guide their redirection of that feeling.
This all sounds extremely obvious to a point that we don't think about it, but my worry is that people see one joy after another, and get trapped in cycles of self sabotage and shame. If you are the one sharing joy, a simple redirection for observers during the time of sharing could greatly benefit someone that is stuck. Compassion towards not only your loves, but your surroundings will then create more action within this cycle of joy/hostility, but a wide reach in acknowledgement the cycle can keep giving observers the ability to free themselves.

kind of like the meme: when you listen to music vs when you understand the lyrics.
metallica has a bunch of songs with deep lyrics.
"fade to black" is about suicide
"master of puppets" is about drug addiction
    "One" is about PTSD
"Disposable heroes" is about sacrificing people as soldiers in wars.
