Hahahah, thank you all for straightening me out on the pronunciation of the song and Maynard - I'm so bobo.
All good! We all made the same mistakes. Some of us still to ounce Ænima wrong. Ah-ni-mah. I know I had to look it up and even then it was hard to find some of the stuff.
You're showing them the respect they deserve and us diehard fans appreciate it
Youre right about all those time signatures. The song shifts constantly
Tools best overall album IMO from a personal standpoint. You should check out the grudge, the patient and ticks and leeches off this album.

The people complaining about him pausing the music, need to grow up. If they want to experience it without stops then they should just listen to the original song lol. We came here for his analysis which most reaction channels don't even offer. Usually people just say OMG this is amazing and have no clue about engineering or composition.
just imagine that this song used to be played on mainstream radio stations. those were the days
And he said this was the first time he's heard it..
he must've been listening to that one other station. Lol
I still hear it on my local rock radio station
Still is in my neck of the woods. And I very rarely listen to actual radio...but heard it yesterday.
First time I heard it was radio. Better days.

- What’s the tempo?
- TOOL
Tempo is how fast or slow the song is. You mean time signature. Time signature is how you count the beats. Tool uses odd time signatures.
Meter* and the answer? All of them.
-what's the tempo?
Tool: yes!
Exactly
@@collectiveconscious2324 I love people like you. That feel to need to correct or instruct almost innately. 🙄
How anyone could troll this man is beyond me.
Agreed!!! He is amazing!!! “Get baked”
Yep he is a good geeza. That's why I subbed. Down to earth and good breakdowns.
@Edward Elizabeth Hitler lol
They're Tool fans, we're all insufferable retards in one way or another.
I remember showing my High School band director this song during music theory class one day. We spent a whole class watching him notate it on the white board. 50something meter changes.
Thats really cool
Question for you: can time signatures change within a single song? One of my professors argued with me that they can't while reviewing my paper on Tool. It's been a few years since I took that class but that argument still gets me a bit heated...but I never figured out who was correct.
@@meganwoehl5277 as far as I have ever been taught, or have even read on a sheet of music, time signatures can and do change in music. If your professor was arguing that as long as the subdivision doesn't change, the amount of down beats per measure doesn't matter if you aren't counting by numbers in your head, I can kinda understand their point. I had a director once who used variants of like "du-da-de" instead of thinking "trip-el-ett" for triplets, he used "du" for 1,2,3,4 and "da" for the off beat or "and." To a person counting phonetically like that, it wouldn't really matter how many beats per measure, thus time signatures don't change. But I'm still scratching my head as to why a professor would imply that time signatures do not change.
not quite 50 lol but cool story at least
@@meganwoehl5277 Of course there can be multiple time signatures in a song. Your professor was wrong.
your analyiss of the meter was instantly correct. It is 5/8 7/8 5/8 7/8 during the verses, and 6/8 in the pre-chorus, and then 12/8 in the chorus. The idea is that the hypermeter of 12/8 is broken up, or "schismed" during the verses. Because "I know the pieces fit, 'cause I watched them fall away."
😍
An unique explanation of Schism - musically!!
I wish I never heard Schism . . . So I could listen to it for the first time again.
...it's why we chase the dragon through reactions...surreal...
I have epileptic seizures and it totally destroys my memory every time I have an episode. For some reason music and TOOL specifically has never left.
My dad was an amazing musician and watching you react to this is exactly what it was like when I played this for him the first time. So it’s a little like listening to music with him again, which I miss very much. Thank you.

"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers". That is one of my favorite lines of any Tool song.
I love how long it takes him to sing that full line.
Lyrically it's absolutely beautiful and real and true.
But the way he sings it melodically....and stretches certain vowels across meters is what really draws out the emotional depth of that line. Such a great lyric.
@Richard Horrocks it is straight forward. Just wonderful though.
Mine too.
@Richard Horrocks And Shakespeare is most famous for saying "Life sucks and then you die". That's all the "to be" monologue is, isn't it?
You can talk about something universal in a profound way, use depth to get past the logic and make people FEEL what you're saying. And I think Tool does with this line.
@Richard Horrocks I’d go with a lack of communication causes disconnection, myself
Around 9:48 in, he says "oh shit!" with that very surprising guitar chord..for some reason that point in the song always struck me as especially brilliant
Same here. Usually time some sort of physical signing when that chord hits
Old composer: that section is pure cerebral cinematic theatre of the mind... it evokes thoughts.

Adam Jones is an artist by trade and worked in a special effects studio in Hollywood before TOOL formed as a band; he worked on Terminator ll, Jurassic Park ll, and other films. Adam is the one who is responsible for making all of TOOL's videos and I believe that the uniqueness of his guitar compositions come directly from his filmic and artistic skills. He approaches music like a true artist, in addition to it as a musician. Adam is an extraordinary tasteful guitarist and all the band members are very tasteful musicians.
My favourite part of watching people discover Tool is when they start to wonder if every song is this good.
... I won't spoil it...
I will.... ...they are... :)
My favorite part is letting old school drummers listen. But start the conversation off with "man I really need your help figuring this time signature out"
Then they discover every song is better than the last masterpiece.
My favorite part of watching tool videos is introducing dummys to spiral architect a sceptics universe lolz
You mentioned how tight they are in their playing. I've seen them live many times, and they are just as tight live. They put on the most expert live rock performance I've ever seen. I saw them once at a small venue in Chicago in 2006, and the intimacy of that experience was unparalleled for me
The intro, "Mantra," before the bass comes in is a slowed down recording of Maynard gently squeezing his cat.

You're killing these videos man! My only advice is you don't need to apologize if you have something to say! We are here to see your reaction. I love how metaphoric most of the song is. Comparing the relationship it a crumbling temple, pointing out the relationship is mildewed and smoldering, etc. Then the plain simple truth: “Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion”. That is the thing I love about Tool. Complex, complex, complex, simplicity...simply amazing.

I wish I could wipe my brain completely just to relive this experience again. Tool is the only band I know that can take all this complexity, all this cerebral progressive stuff, and make it sound raw, visceral, primal and most importantly, natural. It's complex not for the sake of it, but because that's how they express themselves. If you don't try to analyse it, the complexity doesn't become apparent, you just get transported into another relm, as if you just dropped some hard core psychedelic drug. It's not technical noodling like many prog bands, it sounds like it came out the jungle of some bizzare alternate universe.
When you say "technical noodling like many prog bands" does Dream Theater fit that description in your opinion?
I'm genuinely asking idk anything about them or Tool lol just heard many people sometimes "compare" both bands

Hey belle
@@KeyOfGeebz Magically! 🙂
@@dan.j.boydzkreationz Hey Dan! 👋
Most of their albums are written like symphonies. They (especially Justin, the bassist) even refer to the separate songs as
”movements” instead of songs. That's one reason you're hearing similarities in key and meter combinations. Lots of 5s and 6s in this album. You'll hear lots of 7s in Fear innoculum (thus the spelling of the epic track 7empest). These guys are a modern music phenomenon. I've watched them live many times and each time has been the greatest thing I've ever witnessed. Lol. There are moment in each concert I've been to where I've almost had the out of body sensation enough to look around and see everyone who was screaming and jumping just moments before, all standing with their jaws agape and eyes wide consuming the moment as if it were the breathe of life. Music has much more power than humans understand. It's almost a ”religious” experience seeing Tool live. As a musician you find yourself dumbfounded that these 4 guys and only 3 instruments (not counting Maynards angelic voice and profound lyrics of the collective human experience) can create the sounds that you are hearing. **Most of the over dubbed/produced effects you hear on the albums are easily done by Justin on bass with his ridiculous rig and pedal skills, or Adam, OR Danny. Maynard will have a keyboard set up to fill in effects that might be needed.
Adam (the guitarist) is also a movie special effects artist and is usually the creator of those trippy videos 😁 For this particular Album (aka symphony) they began working with the artist Alex Grey and their music and his art work have been synonymous ever since ❤️
🤯
The meter changes in the timing of their music is one of the monumental achievements.

Excellent reaction! Maynard always stays in the back during their shows, I think because he wants to be just an instrument. His ‘frontman’ days are behind him. They were glorious though! I saw them in 2001 and it blew my mind. Fast forward to this last tour where I attended three shows and was equally blown away and you see and hear the growth of the band! They are masters at what they do! How awesome to exist at the same time! 🤘🏻
He also had some crazy stagefright too, probably gotten better through time, but that is yet another piece of the Tool puzzle. I know the pieces fit.
just recently finished learning this song all the way through on drums, so needless to say i’ve heard it countless times. when the band comes in after the drum build and maynard hits the “between supposed lovers” with the double bass and crashes from danny i STILL get goosebumps EVERY time.
Impressive how this guy evolved as an youtuber in a few weeks. Came from more recent videos and the quality has improved so much.
Gotta do Parabol/Parabola together now. If you like the bass on Schism you'll love the bass on there as well.
The band creates the songs, then Maynard writes the lyrics after, always. If anything, have lyric videos up instead of the videos for yourself so you don’t miss out on Maynard’s epic poetry in addition to his singing abilities. Vicarious and Aenima relate perfectly to today’s society even though they were written so long ago, plus they rock hard!
Drums are just insane. Danny is on another level.
