In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I show you how to eat a Kiwano Melon and do a taste test. The Kiwano Melon also know as the Horned Melon, African Horned Cucumber, Jelly Melon, spiked melon and a few other names, is native to Africa. But is cultivated in other parts of the world like the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, and others. It is quite interesting looking, like something you would find on another planet.
To eat it you just cut it in half and then scoop out the green jelly with a spoon. You can eat the soft white seeds, or spit them out. They are similar to cucumber seeds or the white soft watermelon seeds. They can be juiced, eaten as a snack, or in a salad.
There are many health benefits to the Kiwano or Horned melon such as:
- Variety of essential nutrients (protein, fat, vitamin C, A, B6, Magnesium, Iron, Phosphorus, Zinc Potassium, Calcium)
- low in calories, carbs, and fat. High in protein compared to other fruits.
- Antioxidant rich
- Promotes healthy red blood cell production
- Promotes blood sugar control
- Supports hydration
Health benefit information came from here: www.healthline.com/nutrition/...
What does a kiwano or horned melon taste like? It has a texture of jelly or like a passion fruit and tastes like a mix between passion fruit, cucumber, and lime. It is not very sweet at all.

Here in Africa, in Namibia, we have lots of them, they are all over in the wildness, they just grow by themselves we don't have to grow them and they are plenty. I collected them today because i wanted to collect seeds, i think dried and crushed seeds are good for my poultry. I just wanted to know how other people call this spiky melon...i came to learn that you call it Kiwano, i call it Manyose, thank you for the video
Awesome! :) And you are very welcome!
We also call it a horned melon because of the spikes.
Thank you for the video!! I have just ordered the seeds online out of curiosity, since I have never seen or heard of them then I searched how to eat 😋 I am from East Africa, living in Northern Europe zone 7b, I will plant them for the first time and see, love to try new things 😊
That's why Africa is the best and cannot need anyone else 😂
So cool!! Thank you for sharing!
I bought one today. Mixed it in a blender together with half a lemon, some ginger, a shot of strawberry juice and lots of water. Extremely refreshing! Definitively an interesting fruit. Not that great by itself but excels as a small addition when mixed with other fruits. At least that goes for my taste preferences growing up in Germany.
Awesome! Glad you tried it and liked it, and that does sound like a very refreshing drink you made.
Did u include the outside as well
My son and I have a "thing" where i let him pick out (what he calls) one weird fruit and one weird cheese each time. He loves trying new things! So, a horned melon was definitely a good choice to put in his Easter basket! Thanks for the video so we know how to eat it. I hope he's surprised with the green inside! It costs $9.99 in Washington state 😳 But, he's worth it, I never want to squash his curiosity ❤
That is awesome that he loves trying new things!! And yes that is expensive. Let me know what he thinks once he tries it!
make a channel if you haven’t already
That’s a cute idea ❤
My 7 year old saw it and wanted it. No wonder why Safeway didn't have a sign for it. I got to the register and it was $9! Hawaii. Only for her to say "eew" when I opened it lol. It was my first time seeing this fruit too so off to UA-cam to see what it's all about.
Matt, loving these videos lately demonstrating how to cut different exotic fruits and then taste-testing them!
Thanks so much Brett! Glad you are enjoying this different type of video. :)
Planted them for the first time this year. never tasted as of yet but cant wait! They are all over the place and grew up my fence, which actually looks pretty cool. Growing so good! I'm from TX and temps got up into 100 plus this season, so I don't think you will have a problem in AZ. Cost 5.49 ea. here.
Awesome! Yeah, I bet the will grow well here. I might plant some in my parents backyard next season, haha.
I accidentally bought this thing, thinking it was yellow dragon fruit. I'm not enjoying it at all, but thanks for the video.
You are welcome! Yep, definitely different than a yellow dragon fruit. :)
Try it's juice, it's amazing especially when cold. Sorry my English is not good
We just did the same thing today! I also bought 4 thinking it was the yellow dragon fruit we had tried the day before 🤦🏾♀️
Yes me too!!!
I thought it was a dragon fruit so decided to buy one. I paid $5 for itand was so disappointed. I had to throw it in the bin. Not nice at all
Me too!
My kids and I have ate an unlimited supply this fall for free!!! The melon grows on a vine that grows down my neighbors chain link fence ! He and his wife are good friends that grow a bunch of different stuff in their garden!! 😎
The call them jelly melons!
Awesome!!! Way cheaper than buying them. They are so expensive to buy in the States. Better to just grow them if you can haha. Yep jelly melons is another popular name for them.
This is a good fruit to eat, we grow a lot here in Africa.
Awesome! :)
How much do they sell for in Africa? We pay about 5.49 in Chicago.
@@Mujahedkhan989 That is so expensive! We buy four for 20 shillings in Kenya
@@fatimaa343 omg that’s .17 cents in US currency.
@@Mujahedkhan989 seattle $9'99
I'm about to try today. Thank you for the headstart.
Awesome! Let me know how it tastes. Interesting fruit indeed.
We found one of these in the produce section and my son was convinced it was a dragon egg so we bought one to try. Had no idea how to cut it, so thanks for the demo. I think he's going to be jazzed about the bright green inside
That is awesome, Katherine!! haha Also it will taste a little better if you sprinkle a bit of salt on it.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt noooo just by itself
@@yoshango You can eat it however you want. But lots of people sprinkle a little salt on it. Because to them, it tastes better.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt yeah I know I just gag at the thought of it. Wasn't trying to give hate or anything
@@yoshango Have you tried it? Seriously a little bit of salt makes a lot of fruits taste better. Especially melons. Not a lot of salt just a pinch goes a long way.
Thanks for posting this Matt. I saw the Kiwano here in Ireland and bought it out of curiosity. I'm glad it had so many health benefits. Taste ways, it was unremarkable but you never know til you try it!
You are welcome, Mark! Unremarkable indeed for the taste, but it looks cool at least haha. A little bit of salt sprinkled on it helps the taste a bit.
I moved to Hawaii 7 years ago from Phoenix. I had a landscape co called "AtoZ Green Landscaping" I had a lush garden and grew all kinds of things there including passion fruit and guava and all kinds of melons. I hadn't heard of this fruit until I moved to big island but I currently grow it here. I enjoyed your video and subscribed. I am a farmer out here and I happen to enjoy the way you give a little history and detailed taste and info. Thanx man. Aloha
That is awesome! I love it here in Phoenix. I have yet to visit Hawaii, some day! :) It is amazing to me how many tropicals we can grow here in Phoenix. Getting ready to transplant a passion fruit from my patio (in a pot) to my parent's backyard in Gilbert. Haha, I planted all my trees in their backyard. You are welcome! Aloha!
Just tried one this morning $6.99 (gotta love CA prices) at my local supermarket. I didn't hate it, but didn't particularly like it. You were spot on saying its a mix of a kiwi and a cucumber. Wouldn't but it again, but its always fun to try new stuff. Thanks for this video!
Glad you gave it a try!! Agreed completely. If it was cheaper I would totally buy them more often, and when I have a backyard I will grow them in a garden, just because they look so darn awesome, haha.
Here in Washington State, it costed $9.99. Pretty pricy lol
Yea got some at Ralph’s for $8 each. Just to say I actually tried it. But won’t buy them again they are just mehhh.
$2.49 at my local grocery store here in the Bay Area. Never saw these before so I snagged one. I like it
99 cents here in Chicago? When u go to the self checkout line and ring it up as an Apple 😉 😂
My grand-daughter, Cali and i grew these Jelly Melons here in Lexington, North Carolina. We got about 30, but it frosted early and so we had to pick them green. We got 1 that ripened on the vine, and it tasted just like you decribed it. She added a little sugar to the jelly and it was really good. It took a long time for the vine to mature and flower. It took off when it got really hot.
Awesome! Glad you were able to grow them where you live. I haven't tried growing them yet because I don't have a yard. But they grow really well here in Phoenix. Try a little salt on it too next time you try it to see if you like it that way.
I love it very refreshing was eating one while watching your vid
Awesome!
$6 here in upstate NY, recommend squeezing the pods into a bowl when really ripe and sweet and put some whip cream or cool whip with it. When they are ripe and sweet it’s like an all natural green jello flavor
Yep lots of fun things to do with it. Also adding salt to it, helps the flavor. Or squeezing it into a blender for a smoothie.
Just literally ate one as I was watching your video on it! It is absolutely delicious! First time having it. Mine tasted like a combo of aloe Vera , kiwi and
Awesome! Glad you gave it a try and liked it!! A combo of Aloe Vera and Kiwi is a great way to describe it.
Same
Matt, we live in the North Island of New Zealand. We have a prolific Kiwano vine that has been the most productive of any vegetable or fruit we have growing. They are green at the moment, we are waiting for them to ripen. We had to search for how to prepare and eat them, so thanks for your video - the first one that came up!
That is awesome!! Very cheap that way, haha, these are so expensive to buy here in the States. Let me know how you like them after trying them.
My wife bought one to try. We had no idea what it was so I googled it. Glad to have found this video. I enjoy it. I would eat it if there were some around, but this one cost $6 so it’s def. It going to be something we buy regularly
Glad you got to try it and glad you found this video. Yeah pretty expensive to eat regularly, unless you live in a location where you can grow them yourself.
My daughter saw this at the grocery store here in NC. I had no idea what to do with this hahaha but thanks to you we figured it out. It’s kinda hard to eat with the seeds but fun for a try!
That is awesome, Allison! Glad you gave it a try. :)
I just tried one of these, they’re delicious!
Glad you tried one and liked it!!
Hi Matt. I love your video on this fruit. I bought one about a week ago and had the pleasure today of trying it and it was really good. Very juicy and ripe. A very natural lightly jelly texture with a simple but great taste to me as well great health benefits . Will be purchasing more .
That is awesome, Sirena! I am glad you bought one to try out and liked it. :) And thanks for watching the video!
I felt kinda silly looking up how to eat a fruit but this actually really helped ! thanks!
Don't feel silly there are lots of weird, interesting, exotic fruits out there, that are obvious on how to eat them.
Grew up eating this in my home country in Zimbabwe. They just grow from the bush and we just pick them up .Its a very delicious fruit. It's one of those fruit which you need grow up eating in order to really appreciate them .
Awesome! And I agree, most people here in the States that try it don't seem to like it that much. I tell them to sprinkle a little bit of salt on it.
We ne’er ate the horned cucumber/melon or kiwano which grew abundantly in our fields & gardens back in Zim 🇿🇼 with a teaspoon like you do in Arizona 🇺🇸! We just cut the tiny horns around it and chowed it like apples 🍎…that simple 😊😜!
My sons school sends home fruits and veggies home. You are how I find out how to cut, eat, ect. them. Thank you!
Awesome! You are very welcome. :)
I'm actually growing these on my glassed in balcony right now. In Sweden the seeds are sold as Kiwano, a exotic Cucumber, recommended for sallads or drinks.
It's growing like crazy already over 2m long and spreading out towards the sides. So I hope I'll manage to get som fruits to try before the summer is over.
That is awesome! :)
These are amazing, I love them.
Glad you love them!!
Have you ever tried Jack fruit, if not, get that next
@@patrickkimberlin3209 Indeed! Here is my video on it. ua-cam.com/video/TfVVpE9AU0g/v-deo.html
I know it as Gaka. (Horned cucumber) It is the most refreshing fruit. They grew wild in my home land of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe)
Awesome!
thanks, I've wondered how they tasted, I'm going to try this for sure, I'm a curious one, I to live here in Beautiful Sunny Arizona in a small town in Mohave County..I might even attempt to grow a couple..I would probably use them in smoothies to take advantage of the protein..
You are welcome! Arizona is the best State haha.
I had it once, serve as juice, i love it.
Awesome!
I just bought one yesterday for $2 CAD at a local market. Brought it to a party and it was a blast
Awesome!! And great price to try it. I wish I could find them that cheap here haha.
I planted some seed s in October 2021.., now Jan 2022 and my vine is LOADED with fruit. I have never had them before and just wanted to grow something that was different to show the kids that there is more to fruit and veg than what they see at the supermarkets. I grow all sorts of weird and wonderful fruits and veggies..., if it's different, then I will grow it.
Thanks for the vid. (You would have no trouble growing it).
That is awesome you grew them!! You will have to let me know how fresh off the vine ones taste. What other unusual things do you grow?
Thanks for this video, I bought one and freaked when I opened it up-all those seeds! I thought it “had gone to seed” but now realize that’s all there is!
You are welcome! :)
I actually bought one, it's definitely interesting. The taste reminds me of a tomato/a kiwi/a cucumber. Mine was a little blander in color on the inside but still good.
Glad you got to try one!
I’ve had this before and I love it
Awesome!
Thanks for the video. I bought one a couple of weeks ago in Florida for $6. Didn't really know what to do with it. Thanks for the clarification.
You are very welcome!! :) What did you think about the taste?
I would try it. Looks interesting
Interesting indeed! :)
Dope! My daughter (5 y/o) and I had a ball following along and learning about it. Cool video man
Thank you, Nathan! :)
I tried a Kiwano for the first time today. I liked the flavor, and would buy it again. I paid 6.49 here in Oregon.
Glad you got to try it and liked it! :)
That is the weirdest looking thing i've ever seen. In a good way.
hahaha I know Susan? Crazy right? :)
I just tried it. I feel the same way that you do about it. Expensive and just ok.
Glad you tried it. I think it looks too cool, not to try at least once, but in the end, not something I will buy often, haha.
Agree and it cost me 6.99$ probably won’t get it again
I just found this at my local store after moving states. It was pretty expensive but my curiosity got to me. I found your video trying to figure out how to cut this thing lol I think I agree with you, idk if I would buy this again cuz it's not the best tasting compared to other fruits and the price is not the greatest. I did enjoy this experience though, Thank you for your video!
Awesome! Glad you found it and tried it. Fun fruit to try once for curiosity reasons for sure, haha. Much cheaper to just grow them if you live in a climate that would support them, hahaha. And you are very welcome! Thanks for watching :)
I love the taste of the kiwano melon & its' texture, too!
Awesome!
I tried one here in New Zealand, it is enjoyable and juicy, a good thirst quencher on a hot day, but definitely not worth the $6 per individual fruit.
Definitely not worth $6! Glad you tried them!
I like it, i just tried one with my mom and sister. if you haven't tried it before, i recommend not chewing the seeds. it has the texture of Jell-O
Glad you tried it!
Just bought one and tried it today. Found your vid when my sister wanted to know if it was supposed to taste like this. Turns out I tried to grow one last summer but alaska stunted it
Glad you tried it!
I grew these last year in my garden here in Tennessee. They grew well. I had them growing up a trellis that I made out of a cattle panel. I was not impressed with the taste so I didn't bother to plant any this year, however, one grew on its own in the area where I put all the vines and stuff I tore out at the end of the season. They grow like a weed. The slf-planted one took off and the vines spread in a 10 foot x 10 foot area.
That is awesome you grew them. They look cooler than they actually taste haha. But I still like them. They are an important crop in Africa.
Wanted to add after reading the comments. Holy smokes! I had no idea these were so expensive in stores. I can't imagine why b/c they grow like weeds. At $5/piece I probably had at least $100 worth left hanging on the vines last year. I just tossed all in my discard pile to break down where it sprouted this year. If you need seeds let me know. I have a ton of them.
@@GrandmaSezSo I know pretty crazy right?? They are expensive in the stores, probably because they are usually imported or just not grown much here in the States.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt You could totally grow them in Phoenix. I used to have a garden when I lived in Superior, AZ. Moving to AZ from WY, it blew me away what we could grow there and for how long. I loved AZ for the pepper garden. I grew peppers year around.
@@GrandmaSezSo Yep so many things grow here in AZ. :) I used to have a pretty big patio garden, but then when my parents moved to Gilbert, I planted everything at their house, haha. Dragon fruit, mango, fig, grapes, barbados cherries, jujube, and soon I will be planting my lonely passion fruit that I have at my house in a pot, which I propagated from a larger passionate fruit that I planted at my friends house. haha
For the first time I saw this fruit in local Supermarket in Singapore and costs S$7.95/piece, considered expensive fruit compared to other fruits for its size. I took it raw and the taste is not that great compared to other fruits but it has a very mild sour taste, each seed encapsulated on a jelly like flesh, greenish in colour. I put together with the seeds in my mouth and separated the seeds by squeezing the flesh in my mouth and spit the seeds out, the flesh is found to be bit crunchy and it got the raw smell of cucumber but don’t find banana flavour as what some posts say (maybe my senses are not that strong to find banana flavour). Overall I liked the fruit for its crunchy texture, mild sour taste and flavour. I had it in whole with the seeds and it just slipped easily through my throat, not difficult to swallow. Can try once for experience.
Glad you gave it a try. Definitely worth trying at least once in my opinion just to experience this interesting fruit.
Small world googled this fruit cuz I just bought it and ur video came up and when you said AZ I was like whattt I live here too 😂 did not know they were from Africa now I’m excited to tell my friends who are from there that I tried it 😋 I’ll be trying it tm morning :) Yaya thanks for the info
That is awesome!! What part of AZ? As long as it isn't in the mountains you can grown them here too if you like gardening. Just save the seeds after trying them. Also they taste a little better with a bit of salt sprinkled on them. Curious to see what you think about the taste haha
I just picked one up in NJ today. First time I have seen one so had to get it. It was 3.99. Haven't tried it yet and found your video while searching on how to eat it. Will let you know. Thanks for the information on it! I also picked up 3 pepino melons which will try too.
Awesome! Glad you picked one up to try, that isn't a horrible price to try it at. Try it first as is, then sprinkle a tiny bit of salt on it after.
Me too
I grow these. Mine are green though, and turn yellow after being harvested. They grow wild in Africa. I normally chop the ends off, then cut the skin off and keep the fruit whole and just slice it, lightly salt it and then drink the left over juice in the serving juice. They are easy to grow and we harvested hundreds of them in the summer.
Awesome! Yeah I imagine they are easy to grow here in Arizona, I just don't have the space to grow them. But once I get a backyard, I definitely will.
Wow..beautifull fruit😋😋😋
Indeed!
I saw this at the local supermarket here in Singapore and it was priced at about the equivalent of USD5.15 per fruit. I thought it was costly by local standards so did not buy it. It’s interesting to know how the inside looked like and now that I have seen it, I might give it a try. Interesting fruit indeed!
Wow Jan, yeah that is expensive pretty close to the same price here. I enjoy trying new fruits so I don't mind paying a high price the first time to satisfy my curiosity. lol :)
👍😃😄🙃
Someone have me a couple last year in Australia. This year quite a few seedlings came up in my compost!! So I’ve now got about 15 or fruit. 😁
Awesome! And the cheapest way to get them for sure, just grow them yourself! haha. I will definitely grow them once I get a yard.
I just got one in NC for $2 at Wegman’s. Looking forward to trying it. Thanks for the video.
That's not a bad price to try this fruit. You are welcome! You will have to let me know what you think after trying it.
I found these in my garden today in my pumpkin patch. I'd thought they were cucumber plants and was shocked to find these. I think I bought one at the store and saved the seeds or something
Awesome!! Much cheaper to grow them at home then buy them haha at least in the States.
My daughter and I got one to try as we try new fruits anytime we find them. Not a big fan but not horrible. $9.99 in midwest IL so very pricey to try but want my daughter to try and experience new foods.
Glad you tried it and that is a fun hobby for sure. Definitely visit an International Market like H-Mart if you get the chance, lots of cool fruits you can find there to try.
I've had plenty of those, especially when I was younger. Bought some today in my hometown Lusaka, Zambia. They were K2 each, which is about 0.089USD each.
Wow that is very inexpensive. They are so expensive here! And thanks for watching in Zambia :)
Yeah, I just got one to try.. it's was about $5 us
I picked one of these up at a health food/specialty store. Sure is an interesting fruit. I was admittedly unimpressed with its flavor, but a sprinkle of smoked salt does wonders! I ate some of the fruit with the skin, which didn't affect the taste at all. At $10.00 each (in NY state) I probably won't buy again, but it was fun to try!
Definitely fun to try and definitely tastes better with salt, however at the high prices here in the States, not really worth it. Now if you live in an area warm enough to grow them, that's the ticket if you want to eat them more often haha. Glad you tried it!
Thanks!!
Welcome!
Just ate one it’s more of a cucumber taste I think it would be great in a smoothly with kiwi & bananas maybe nice video 👍
Glad you got to try one! And thank you!
Hey mate I grow them here in port Stephens nsw and you can’t give them away. Lol I use them on ice cream for a dessert and I also mix them up with my jerky when I do it they are very nutritious.
Awesome! haha better than paying $4 to $10 for just 1 lol
Mine was.like.2.60 in Michigan at kroger.bought it today I'll try it tomorrow
That is a decent price, especially if you haven't tried them before. Let me know what you think after eating it!
Found it growing in my compound but still greenish not yet yellowish. Waiting to taste it,
Cool!!
Per Seed Savers catalog, it comes from near the Kalahari Desert in Africa and is very heat, drought and poor soil tolerant. Can't wait to grow them here in the Mojave (Joshua Tree), especially considering the cost.
Hi Eddie! Yep it comes from Africa but cultivated in many areas around the world. It should grow pretty well in Mojave! If I had a yard I would be growing them here in Phoenix.
My grandson likes to try unusual fruits and we got one for $4.98. We watched you to see how to eat it! Thanks!
That is awesome, Martha! :) You are welcome!
I had one once, really enjoyed it. Maybe it was me though but I swear the inside smelled kinda like fresh lawn clippings.
Glad you tried it!
My daughter and I bought one at $5.99 in massachusettes
We both liked at and thought it a combined taste of cucumber and lime. We wouldn't buy it all the time but definitely liked it
Glad you gave it a try!! :)
I live at the northern end of Johannesburg and found them growing on my compost. I did not know what they were, but my gardener told me that they were edible. When they turn yellow I will try them. (I am not sure if they weren't planted by my gardener :-))
That is awesome, Michael! We call those volunteer plants (sprout on their own, without having to plant anything), haha, we had them all the time in our compost growing up, usually cucumber or squash, pumpkin, or watermelon. Lots of watermelon since my dad loved eating those, ha.
I just bought one in San Francisco, $5 here. Texture similar to chia seeds that are steeped over night. Probably good for digestion.
Glad you tried it!
I stole one today at the grocery store well not actually stole but I rung it up as an apple. It costs too much but I am about to try it now!!!
Yeah they can be very expensive, and the taste doesn't match the cost in my opinion. haha, you can try adding a tiny bit of salt on it, which will make it taste better as well.
I bought one before I saw your review on them. They do taste a little like cucumber at first then becomes blend when I chew on the seeds. Put them In cranberry juice for the benefits with chia seeds. Not bad but wouldn’t buy again they were $8.98 each. I am going to try to grow some from the seeds. 🥰
Glad you were able to try them! Yeah too bad they are so expensive. Hopefully you can get the seeds to sprout. They taste a little better with some salt sprinkled on top.
Am from kenya 🇰🇪
And Av eat
it a couple of times
Another name thorn Mellon
It's really good and healthy
hi Shogo! :) I am curious how expensive are they to buy in Kenya?
@@inthekitchenwithmattvery cheap. One goes for 0.2 dollars. They aren't supposed to be sweet but are very good for diabetics.
Wow yeah that is cheap! I did some research and I can definitely grow them here in Arizona. No just need to wait to plant them. Yeah that makes sense, a good fruit for diabetics. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt they like full sun, so you should have no problem!
Costs around $2 here, it's usually sold with a small packet of honey
I like the taste of it to be honest
Awesome!
I just tried one, and it had white flesh with black seeds. It was juicy and very sweet, but as you commented, not a lot of flavor. I think it would be good for smoothies because of the texture of the seeds. Or, I can see combining it with banana for a dessert.
Yeah, smoothies would be a great option.
I believe that you are describing dragon fruit. It's redish from the outside and looks very similar to this one :)
Bought two just because I have never seen it before and tried it, much like yours it was not super sweet but good just the same...don't recall how much I paid but as you said there are other fruits that warrant the attention of my taste buds.
Glad you at least gave them a try. :)
Passion fruit is my best answer to compare this fruits texture. No sweetness but a fresh cucumber taste with a slight mild tang
Yeah, very similar to passion fruit for the texture.
I just got to taste one I work for the school nutrition service and I got to taste one it was real interesting
Interesting is a great way to describe the taste haha. It does taste a little better if you sprinkle a bit of salt on it.
Tried for the first time and it was pretty sour but I don’t mind sour, if you add Tajín on it works perfect! They cost $8 here up in Wisconsin 😅
A bit of salt works well on it too :) :) Glad you got to try it!
We just bought one - searching how to eat it! 😁
Price in Serbia, Europe is 1.2$ each.
Thanks for the review!

Awesome! That is a great price to try it, so much cheaper than here in the States haha
Just harvested three in Tokoroa NZ!
Awesome!
I grow it in Las Vegas and I have at least 8 large ones getting ready to pick as soon as they turn Orange. I don’t enjoy the fruit, bought it accidentally for $5.99. My fruits are larger than the one I bought. Thanks for the info on it. I will use it in smoothie. Hyacinth F.
Awesome!! Yes so much cheaper to grow them at home haha
I just purchased a horned melon because my son's wanted to try it. It's a very expensive fruit 5.00 dollars here in Atlanta. We haven't tried it yet.
Yeah they are expensive! In my opinion, they look cooler than they taste lol but still fun to try at least once. Add a little salt to it as well.
I'm from Pennsylvania in the USA and just tried one today with my fiance. It was 5.99 here. I'm not sure what to think haha it's like a citrus cucumber. I'm going to try to grow them too
Awesome! Glad you got to try them.
I had one yesterday. I paid $2.50 for mine and it was citrusy and bitter. I don’t know if mine was ripe or not. The seeds were not soft and it was too hard to eat. I tried to eat it the jelly and the seeds but it was not worth it. I also tried to strain out the seeds and i didn’t get much juice at all from those efforts. Oh well.. I tried something new! Thanks for posting! :)
Hi Ashlyn! It sounds like yours wasn't quite ripe yet. But in the end even the ripe ones, probably look cooler than they taste to most people. Still fun to try new fruits, haha. :) And you are very welcome!
I’ve herd that kiwano melon vines are Super Massive plants and they grow every where and they take up a Tone of space and they grow like crazy haha
hahaha I wouldn't be surprised! A lot melons take up a lot of space.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt if you wanted to grow them in your garden be careful because if you planted more then 2 or 3 kiwano plants they would take up literally the whole entire garden especially if it was growing in a small greenhouse! You should look them up they are massive
@@jamestropicals8262 Yep, I know, they take up a lot of space.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt haha then you would probably want to let weeds grow to try and slow them down
I bought one yesterday in Olympia, WA and it cost $10. Kind of taste like a sour kewi. Not my favorite but glad I tried it.
Glad you tried it! Yeah a sour slimy/jellylike kiwi is a good description for the taste! It does taste a little better with a pinch of salt on top.
I just bought 2 for $0.99 at Kroger in the ripe produce section, cheap enough to try it!
Oh wow! Yes for that price totally cheap enough to give it a try. My store here in AZ "Frys" is a Kroger owned store, but I haven't seen them that cheap here. haha
I have them growing in my garden. Phalaborwa, Limpopo. SA
Awesome!
Use to give them to the cows and pig's to eat as kids, prickly pear fruit was my favorite best eaten with gloves
Interesting!!
It’s pretty good to make tea with the seeds.
Awesome!
Just got one today can’t wait to try it but I paid $12 in bend oregon!!!
Expensive!! Sprinkle a little salt on it, it will make it taste a little better.
Couldn’t have explained it any better.
Thank you! There is one thing to note, it does taste a little better with a bit of salt sprinkled on it.
They gave one at school to my daughter, of course she didn't have a clue what it was, she brought it home, I didn't know how to eat it until I saw your video tks
That is awesome! Glad you found the video helpful. Now the real question is, how did you like it? haha :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt will try later today, I don't want to ruin my delicious breakfast haha
@@cesar235cs LOL Good idea :)
I bought one today. It is yellowish inside, definitely not so intensely green as yours. But the taste is pretty much as you describe it.
Glad you tried it out. I wonder if there are a few different varieties, and maybe that is why yours was yellowish inside.
It's pretty good in my opinion
Awesome!
It also has a hint of green tomatoes i just now tried my first one I been eating it as I watched this I'm thinking about growing some here in Ohio
Glad you tried it!!
I'm in sub-tropical Australia. I let them grow crazy. I picked half a box in 1m2 so there are tonnes left, so I'm trying to work out what to do with them all? I didn't know they are a fruit, I was eating them green as a cucumber which is delicious! I can't believe you had to pay so much. I do find them selective where they'll set fruit though. They love to grow on a fence or trellis. I haven't yet searched an area where they are growing over other plants, the fruit may be hiding? These ones self seeded. They're vigorous growers! We had crazy rain though. Flowers and fruit-set didn't come until the rain slowed. OHHH, that's why the ones on other plants haven't fruited.. I've been throwing water over the area because the other plants are a huge variety of taro. Hmm.
Awesome!! Yeah they are so expensive here haha. Once I have some land I will grow them here in Phoenix. I have a couple Australian recipes here on my channel. Honey Joys ua-cam.com/video/pQRplldcq2k/v-deo.html and chocolate crackles ua-cam.com/video/2kMtcwtvlf8/v-deo.html Some day I will make it to Australia for a visit, definitely on my bucket list.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Haha, are they Australian? I grew up eating those; I've never thought about it before. Yes, they're quite a treat. Gosh it's been years and you're tempting me! It's makes you feel like a kid all over again. ANZAC cookies are my soft spot, with half the sugar these days. There's something about the golden syrup/oat combination and browning of these. I guess they form AGEs? But they're yummy! Maybe don't brown them too much? Thanks for the recipes! haha. Yes Australia is much like the US, ppl who visit say. The big cities like Sydney and Melbourne are different to the rest of the country. Thanks for the message.
@@cyberanswer Yep those are Australian! At least that is what I have been told and according to Kellogg's they are haha. You are very welcome! Have a great rest of the weekend!
We just picked one up yesterday Seattle area 9.49 ea here
Expensive! Let me know what you think of the taste. Sprinkle a little salt on it, it will make it taste a bit better.
It actually taste like a cucumber with a touch of lime. You eat them when the skin is still green and the same way you eat a cucumber. Just peel is first and cut into slices. The yellow is over ripe. Have eaten my first one today and will be planting then next season.
Hi there, no yellow is not overripe. It can be eaten at different stages.
