How to Eat Kiwano
Kiwano will last several months when stored at room temperature.
Kiwano is also called a horned melon, and an African horned cucumber.
Its taste is mild to slightly citrus with comparisons to lemon, kiwi, and cucumber.
Kiwano is a variety of melon, and grows on the ground from a vine.
Buy a kiwano that is orange in color, the oranger the better.
Unripe kiwano is hard and green, but as it ripens, it colors to yellow and then to orange.
It is edible at any stage as it ripens. When overipe, it will burst.
Kiwano can be sliced open and eaten raw.
The inner pulp and seeds are edible. Kiwano has a high water content, and lots of seeds.
Eat the fruit directly from the gourd or remove the pulp to use in a recipe.
The decorative kiwano gourd can be incorporated in kiwano dishes.
Kiwano Fun Facts
Kiwano was used as a prop in an episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, staring as a "Golana Melon" from planet Golana.
Kiwano is sometimes called "blowfish fruit" because it looks like ...a blowfish.
Because of its high water content, kiwano is prized in African desert regions.
Some varieties of kiwano have smooth skin (also known as "boring kiwano").
Kiwano can be tied to the end of a stick and used to kill your enemies.
In the Northwest USA where I currently live, kiwano is found quite readily in local markets, but it is expensive.
At the local grocery in my neighborhood, this horned melon sells for $7.99 each. Yikes!
It's a bit pricey, but if you have expensive tastes and like a piece of fruit that looks cool, give kiwano a try.
Or try Dragon Fruit ...an equally cool and potentially overpriced piece of produce.

How much have you paid for Kiwano?
3.99 on Long Island, NY
US$3.50 in Maryland
4.99 MN
It was 3.34€ here in Estonia
6.99
I saw one in a grocery store and bought it, saved some of the seeds. Planted some in the spring. Now I have about 30 of them.
I never planted any .. ever .. yet the last 2 years I've had a "weed" vine come up along my fence line with spikey melons and I've ripped and chucked them to the chooks.. LOL.. now I know they are edible..this year they can ripen and I'll try them :)
I can only assume a birds "pooped" some seeds out while on my fence .. LOL
I've heard you can get up to 100 fruit per bush (recommended to plant 2-3 seeds close to each other). Our spring is just starting and I'm eager to see how many I can grow.
Definitely trying this.
Lol. Nevermind. Just saw another video with a huge warning not to plant. Very encroaching and has very spiky stems.

WOW, I didn't realize how expensive it was. $6.98 in Texas. I picked it up because the grandkids wanted to try it. If they wanted to try something new, I was all for it. From what I'm reading, ours was ripe so it tasted good. Kind of that lemon/limey taste with a hint of banana. It made me think of lime jello with a bit of a banana taste. My grandson and I aren't crazy about the seeds but it's okay. My granddaughter loved it but she loves everything fruit and vegetable wise. My grandson wants to try it in a smoother tomorrow. I believe I will save some seeds and see if we can grow our own.
I paid $5.99 for one. I planted some seeds and they’re all growing. I love the taste and the texture, plus it’s a beautiful aesthetic if you cut just the top off. The seeds are encased in a gel-like pod that resembles pomegranate seeds in shape and reminds me of candy. I can’t wait to harvest my own kiwanos.
I am growing my own..., my vine is LOADED with fruit, as I have never had it before I was looking for a vid on how to eat it..., NEVER did i think it was that expensive. Thanks..., looking forward to them ripening up.
Is the vine terribly spikey as another commenter mentioned?
Bought one of these yesterday at Harris Teeter for $4.99. Never seen one before in my life and now I’m here! Thanks Chef, I now know what’s for breakfast in the morning!
Thank you for posting. I heard it has a lot of health benefits.
Came back here after seeing Thanos being a farmer
Super easy to grow, throw a few seeds in a corner of the yard in spring and you'll get melons en mass by the end of the year. they sprawl like mad and takeover swathes if allowed. consider that $8 melon an $8 edible seed packet with cucumbermelons to infinity
Think it would work in colorado during the summer? 85-90 degrees
I live in Australia and we have these vines growing in our garden out of nowhere lolz
Maybe birds pooped 😂😂😁
I soooo love you guys’ videos!! Funny & educational!!
They are long lasting alright! I picked a box (14?) about 2 months ago and they are still Green despise having been in the sun for several weeks. Unfortunately they grew out of season on their own, I will try and sow a few seeds in spring (Australia) to see if they do as well and hopefully pick them ripe in summer.
Oh wow - need to try this!!
woah... those are definitely interesting! I'll keep an eye out for 'em next time I'm grocery shopping! Thanks for sharing, Buck!
kiwano is interesting to look at, but I find bananas and apples suit my wallet a little better
I'd have to agree with you on that! I at least know what bananas and apples taste like! xD
I saw this fruit and wasn't sure what it was. Thanks for the video. I got mine for 4.99 here in NYC. It's nice and bright orange.
Very interesting guys!
Love your Salsa idea!
Bought one for $1 in DC this morning. I eat any and every thing but can't say I'm particularly impressed for this lol
I just picked one up to try from Weis grocery in Bloomsburg, PA for $3.99. Dragon Fruit run around $5.99 - $7.99 right now. Lychee and Rambutan are around $4.99 a bag at Walmart to $6.99 at Giant grocery.
I bought one for 52c in Lanzarote Canary Islands I haven't eaten it yet as I promised to eat it with my friend from Cuba Thanks for the hint on cutting it!
3.99 ea at Sprouts here in North Texas. 8 bucks is outrageous. Anyway, I cut mine in half opposite than the video shows. I then squeeze into a large bowl starting near where it's cut and work my way back toward the end. I set aside the rind for now.
I like to add a small dash of raw cane sugar and drink it from a mug.
Now the rinds...the few seeds still stuck in the rind are extracted and then seperated from the little sack they're in. Let them dry and save them for early spring after the last frost.
I've got 4 seedlings now and by summer will hopefully have plenty of kiwano to enjoy.
it was also featured on the TV show Charmed. one of my fav shows.
Interesting Fruit!!
Thanks guys! Seen these in Bay Area $4.99 too much for me, but now I know!
I've been looking for a way to cover the husk with dishwasher safe coating after cutting & scooping to cup, nothing to report yet.
That's a crazy price! We got ours free! Lol dude at register couldn't find the code and didn't bother calling anyone. He just just put it in the bag.
My son said same thing tastes like kiwi.
Chef Buck This fruit tastes very very delicious with sliced cherry tomatoes...So I carved out the kiwano and mixed it with Sliced cherry tomateos , pinch of salt, black pepper, fresh squeezed lime and some italian dressing (one teaspoon) It was Sooooooooooooo YUMMMMMY I think u should try my recipe!
oooohhh....that sounds good
You guys make such a good pair. 👍Thanks for sharing your experience.
I bought one In College out of curiosity and didnt like it one bit. I dont like melons.
Purchased one at kroger. It's sour and bitter lol. Its like banana, kiwi and Lime 😂
Very good for health.
Cool, I will try one now. I've always been too cheap to buy one.
5.99 in New Jersey. it has a light refreshing taste great for hot weather. a mix between a kiwi and a barely ripe banana. mine was more orange compared to your yellow one.
If you have an Asian market near you, you should check it out. They always have tropical and exotic produce at cheaper prices than American or specialty markets.
we live in Seattle, so there is quite a large International district near downtown with several Asian groceries...will check the price of kiwano next time I stop in there....I agree, I've found produce to be almost always cheaper at Asian markets
I paid $4.00 in LA wow I’m ready to try this now
Interesting, I've only had 2, but they were definitely more tasty than cucumber. I wasn't that crazy over the mushiness though, but I saved some seeds and the first 2 have just germinated. Gonna see it I can grow me some and might be a good based for juicing.
I totally agree, very much like cucumber 🥒
i think i paid ~$3.00 for it, in central VA, from Krogers. It reminds me of a cucumber taste.
I grow my own...got a 10' tall 20' wide trellis filled with them now. I paid $5.00 for a pack of seeds 2 years ago.
I TRIED ONE. IT GAVE ME THE RUNS😊
They are nicer to eat green and you can preserve them
They grow very easy from the seeds from the fruit if you just clean them and keep on paper till spring. - Each plant will give up to 100 fruits
My friend has just harvested a dozen of these fruits growing wild in her backyard, but they're all green. Are there varieties that can be ripe but still green? I'm from Sydney, Australia.
the one I grow is edible when green but tastier when orange ripe. but it prefers to stay on the vine to ripen and doesn't ripen well off the vine
Yes, it was in a Star Treck, but they called it Golana. I just got 5 boxes for free, since I volunteer for a Food Pantry and have to explain tomorrow to my clients what to do with it, so thanks for your video.
How did it go
I'm the assistant manager in the produce department at our local grocery store and we sell kiwano, pepino and Dragon fruit. The cost averages between 3.99 and 4.99 and nobody buys these fruits! I have no idea why we continue to carry them. We do how ever sell a lot of bitter melon, opo squash and yucca root. Have you tried them? I'm interested in what your thoughts are.
Texas 5.99 for the melon
Dragon fruit 6.59
yeah 5.95 in dfw today
Could make for a nice addition to simple syrup for cocktails.
Wow thought I was growing a cucumber.will be making smoorhies
need longer videos. please vlog!
Bought one yesterday because my daughter loves fruits that are “different.” I got one for us to split when she gets out of school. I paid $5.99 here in PA (and this is while inflation is the worst so I feel like I got a really good deal!)
Čudovito super.
😀😀😀😀😀😍😍😍😍😍😍❤❤❤
Los Angeles, CA - $5.49 but in my opinion, what is the maximum you'd pay for trying something new?
Funny "camera girl" categorized this as an adventure, as that is exactly why I decided to try mine (on sale for $5)... and I too think I'll be passing on future adventures with this melon(unless I learn it has some fascinating underlying health benefit;)) !
Someone above actually said this is a super food! I’m going to research that before I invest in buying more than one
You had me at "globules."
HAhaha I remember those in Star Trek! It looks like the part of a pumpkin you throw away. You guys made it sound so appetising lol. Spikey Salsa sounds like a winner
yeah, I think a salsa or a smoothie are the best bets for kiwano...or as something under the Christmas tree for that less than stellar youngster
Was priced here in New Zealand at NZ$4 but was reduced to NZ$2 as it was the last in stock.
What kind of salsa do you eat
I just bought one at my store for $1.99 here in pa I wasn't very thrilled with it it's not gross but reminds me of jello with seeds lol
Yeah that's what I thought too. Very jello ish. I enjoyed it, just not the price 😉
Its little things like this that amaze me about this planet. All the varieties of things that live and grow here. Sure, most things are disgusting and deadly, but sometimes you get something good.
Never heard of one, not surprising for me....What about star fruit, i see some at Sam's Club, but didn't get it?
kiwano is usually sold with the star fruit ....in that area with the mango and papaya and kiwi...I think star fruit is more popular, though...I guess if it's a sam's club it must be!
we are eating the dragon fruit right now but we will try that melon next!! it looks like a squash
I found your video because I was not sure how to cut it. Gave it a go. Mine was around 5.99. I am going to leave the seeds to dry for the animals. Very messy. Difficult to eat and I will stick with strawberries - the not so difficult fruits. It makes a good bowl.
The produce manager put 3 in a discount bag for 0.99C. I put the pulp in a 3 hp blender with 2 pomergranets, it made a delicious drink full of crushed seeds.
I think I paid half the price but I’d love to see a decorative Kiwano salsa
Is this the same thing as a star fruit?
Huh, I only paid 4.50 for mine. It had a much more pronounced kiwi flavor, but the one I got was a much deeper orange, so it was probably riper.
Same...$7.99, in MSP area. I would eat again, but wouldn’t buy again. I think it would be good as a salad dressing.
I paid $5.99 for 1. Crazy yours was $7.99!
They are 4.99 at the safeway in walnut creek ca.
Dragon fruit are 5.99
I just ate one of these for the first time tonight and I thought it tasted horrible. Threw it out after two bites. $5.99 where I live in Pennsylvania
These magaka (kiwano) grow wild in Zimbabwe. In the rural areas one can just pick them up on the side road.
A qui no Brasil eu prantei colhi muito só não sei pra que serve...!
Just paid $3.59. Glad I did. Las Vegas
Are melon cost about 5$ here in texas
If you kept some seeds and planted it - one plant can produce on average 70 of these fruits!
wow....makes me miss my yard even more :^)
i dont know about that i am growing 4 of them it is about 3 dozen so far.
here is the point man
I live in the Denver area, I just got one at Sprouts for $3.99
Next time just cut the horns of and leave the skin on, Just put some salt on it and you'll have one of the best times of your life. Most the flavour is in the skin, the inside is watery, because it grows in arid places. We basically call it cucumber where I'm from.
yeah...of all comparisons, CG thought it was most similar to a cucumber
Hope he gives it one more try.
I just paid $2.00 on sale today in Colorado. Normal price is $4.99.
I added a hint of organic coconut sugar and it tasted good.
The marketing department lol
3.50 Massachusetts
My daughter is growing tis in her backyard in North Carolina.
i grow them they are great but i think adding lemon and lime for the salsa may be too much they already have a citrusy flavor
In London, UK it cost us £1.79 each
I just bought one for $4.99. Curious and wanted to try something new with my daughter 🤗
I paid $5 for the Horned Melon and $4 for the dragon fruit. Funny the cashier asked if I was okay paying the $4 for the dragon fruit but she didn't ask if i was okay with the $5 price for the melon. Like this couple I bought them just to try it once.
Picked mine up for $7.99 in Hawaii a couple days ago.
my favorite fruit now is cherimoyas.
$ 0.25 /pc , in Romania few days ago
I paid 4.48 for mine and 5.00 for dragon fruit in KY.
I'm subscribing just because of the Star Trek reference
Found it at my local Sprouts for $3.99. Might try it after my juice fast.
that's the best so far....I've seen online that a lot of folks use kiwano in smoothies
At that price, save the seeds and grow them yourself
Moved into a new house and apparently the people before me loved them, because they're growing all around my back door.
3.99 at Shoprite in glassboro nj
$2.00 for a pack of seeds. We grew them for the first time this year in East Tn.
I live in CT, paid 3.49 for one!
$4.99 in Los Angeles
Dragon fruit was like $3 per pound though.
$3 a pound is pretty good in the US
weird fruit ..it looked like a strange Asian seafood challenge item :)
it's also called a "blowfish melon" because of it's appearance ...kiwano looks like something you'd have to go to an international market to find, but they stock it regularly at the QFC in my neighborhood, which is basically a Kroger big box supermarket
1.00 in Southern Indiana
I'm from WV and I payed $5:00, but they're so good
