Omg I just bought a passion fruit for the very first time and OMG I was not expecting it to look and smell the way it did lol I instantly was like omg what did I buy!! Lol so thankful for this video
Good to learn about this fruit. Mine is presently bearing fruits yet to ripe. I am anxiously awaiting the fruits to ripe from Ikere Ekiti Ekiti State southwest Nigeria
It got way too big for my patio. snip off a few new shoots from the plant. Trim them down do have only one leaf on them and plant them in a pot. Keep it watered. Do a handful of them, because not all of them will root.
I never had a sweet passion fruit. I Only had them in Colombia in juice and it super delicious with sugar of course😬 in Florida in grocery stores its sold in bags frozen pulp. It taste delicious
You say the one from your friends is sweet, but the one from supermarket is sour. That is my problem with basically all fruit from supermarket; big producers simply pick them too early and don't let the fruit mature enough; so fruit like berries ends up being sour, while others taste like grass. I bet many people, especially in big cities, grow up not liking fruit, because they never even had the chance to taste the real thing. I for example wonder how a fresh and ripe banana should really taste, because we know they pick them still completely green and they turn yellow in transport.
You are not wrong! If you can, try specialty markets and farmer's markets their fruit are usually fresher and tastier. But yes, the big supermarket chains, import from super far away and they have to buy them unripe for longer shelf life. Or just grow your own, haha. But that of course is not feasible for most people. Nothing like fresh ripe fruit right off the tree or vine. :)
Matt, you sound so amateur. The fruits have to be picked before ripening bec by the time they get to the stores where people can buy them they will ripe. One should buy all fruits in different age so they can eat the ripe ones first then the next the ones that ripened and so forth. That way you never miss any ripe fruit or throw any. The trick is to know how to pick. Not every town and city has farmers market so to suggest going to one is not appropriate.
I bought 2 of these from the grocery store a couple of days ago they were $1.49 each, it's the first time I've ever seen them (I'm from Newfoundland, Canada) and I've always wanted to try them so I got one each for my 9 year old son and I. We haven't tried them yet and I had no idea what they looked like inside so it's pretty cool to see your video. I was going to google passion fruit so I knew what to expect lol I can't wait to try them but I'm wondering if I should leave them out on the counter for a couple of days first. I put them right in my fridge when I got home from the store.
Awesome! :) They may be a bit tart, it depends on when they were picked. Unfortunately they won't ripen a ton off of the vine. But the flavor should develop a bit more. Storing in the fridge and then allowing them to come to room temp for a day or two will be fine. :) Although you can eat them right out of the fridge too. Let me know your thoughts once you try them!
I found some dried sweetened passion fruit at the store and I fell in love. It was amazing and you still got the crunch of the seeds. If I see it again I will definitely buy some.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt I’m going to try to grow them if and when I get to Central Texas. I’m in Denver Colorado at the moment. Don’t really have space to grow them here even if I wanted to try greenhouse growing. So Texas it is.
Take it out with a spoon. Put in a glass mixed with an appropriate amount of water. Stir it, then filter out the seeds. Add honey/sugar to the filtered passion fruit water. Put some ice if want to enjoy it cold.
Just bought one and thought it was bad how it looked. Searched how to eat it if I didn’t find this video I’d have tossed it out lol it looks off but taste so good.
I bought these in Malta. Four pieces cost me 2.4€ . I didn't like the skin it was bitter in taste but seeds were small and tasty. It was my first time and I had a normal experience. However, my favorite fruit is Guava with red inner skin and black grapes.

This video is really interesting. I was just wondering how was the name of this fruit in english (here in Brazil we call it Maracujá) and I found this video. I never imagine that we could eat the in its pure form because I foun it very sour. I never saw one of these purple ones, but where I live that are plenty of the yellow ones and it is very common here. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you and you are welcome! The color of the passion fruit ranges from purple to yellow and even green. The ones I grow here in AZ are rarely purple, usually green/yellow. And the taste will range from sweet to sour as well, all on the same vine. The Maracuja is type a passion fruit, meaning they belong to the same family, but they are two different fruits. :) Here is an interesting article: www.lsg-group.com/news/stories/global-food-myths-2-is-passion-fruit-and-maracuja-the-same-fruit/
My dear The Maracuja is the same as the passion fruit. It is named by the missionaries to Brazil. The Brazilian type is yellow and bigger, but in other regions it’s darker (purplish and becomes black as it ripens
Holy Moly! They are about the same price here in Canada, less if you factor in the exchange rate.🍁 You would think that they would be cheaper in Arizona -less shipping.
Yeah, crazy right?? The cool thing is they grow super well in here AZ, so we don't have to buy them, my friend has over 100 on their plant right now, can't wait to enjoy some of the harvest, especially since I gave them that plant lol
The vine You gave away. Was it purple passion fruit? I have some seeds germinated and planted today - then I read that it can take over your property because the root system is below ground. Is that an exaggeration?
Hi there, it was the Frederick variety, which can have both green and purple passionfruit when ripe. What I showed in the video was from one vine, as you can see it covers nearly their entire fence. You can prune it how you like, however the more you prune it back the less fruit you will get.
In Watamu, best juice. I just bought a couple at the local market for pennies, very sweet. Came to find out whether to eat the seeds. Not a fan of eating the seeds.
That seems so expensive for just one. Here in the UK, we can get them for £1 for 3 in the supermarket. Great video anyway; I'm really trying to binge more on fruit than processed goods, I think it's all about habits.
I had no control over that, those were store bought. The ones I get fresh from the plant I gave to my friends, are nice and full on the inside. I know all about growing them, they grow super well here in AZ.

So awesome!! I got cuttings from the plant in this video, and got one to sprout and planted it in my parents yard. I still live in my townhome without a yard.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt the jello is more of a custard texture. Anyways, how long did it took to sprouts from seeds? We tried the seeds but it took too long so we gave up. But had success with the cuttings. Don’t think we are allowed to grow it massively cause we rent. So hopefully I get good amount from what I can grow. Thanks for sharing!
We're here in Maricopa County. What city/county do your friends live where it grows so lush?? We want one, too, but were unaware that it would thrive here. Thanks in advance and thanks for the video. We're headed to Sprouts to grab a few now (currently $2.00ea)
We are in Mesa. They grow will grow very well anywhere in Maricopa County I think. :) You can find plants at a place called Tropica Mango www.tropicamango.com/ I got mine there for $5. And then it only took about 2 years to get super huge.
They are $7.26/each at my local store 😢 have they always been that cheap or are they all just this expensive from inflation? and if $2.50/each was expensive 4 years ago?
Yes that is very expensive. I can still find them for around $2.50 each when they are in season. So much better to grow them haha, if you live in a place where they will grow.
I hear the skin is very tough and most people consider it inedible, and bitter, but I have read that technically it isn't harmful in a few places. But I don't recommend eating it.
Yeah, they are super expensive here in the store. I get them free now though. Because of the plant growing in my friends backyard and I also planted one in my parents yard. When I get a house with a yard, I will plant some there too. haha That is a good price in Serbia!! Also, thank you for watching. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt That is exactly why I am shocked. Here in Serbia we certainly lack the climate to grow them and yet they are cheaper here than in Arizona (if that is where you said you are) where you can just share sprouts and grow it in your back garden. Guess I'll never be an economist hehe. Anyway thanks for the video, I tried passion fruit for the first time so I wanted to make sure that they were not a mess to clean and open, the video helped a lot and mine tasted probably like yours, sour but not like a lemon and with a very nice sweet aftertaste. Cheers!
@@nikolamladenovic8828 Yeah I think the main thing, is most people here in AZ don't even know that you can grow these haha. I have eaten several that ranged from sour to sweet, so yummy, with a tropical floral undertone. Love passion fruit!
Yep I know where Prescott is, been there a few times. I don't know if it will grow there, the average low there is pretty cold during the winter. But you can certainly try it. :)
My friend gave me three of them yesterday - and I have never eaten one. Now that I see what it looks like, it looks awful. However, you said it's delicious. Hmmm. Maybe I'm not that much of a new-food try-er. I did try Durian when in Singapore - OMIGOSH - what a horror. Yet, people love it enough to pay a fortune for one. Then I think 'lots of people make faces when eating herring and gefilte fish and chopped liver and gribbenes and schmaltz. Five things I love eating.
Hey Matt, the reason most people don't eat fruit seeds is because most fruit seeds contain some amount of cyanide in them. Is this not the case for passion fruit?
@@inthekitchenwithmatt I've had a huge mango tree in my backyard and many mangoes that fell to the ground were not ripe. In you video you happened to cut the shriveled one (which means it was ripe), but you did not cut the other one which had smooth skin (assumed to be still not ripe) BTW if one's grows something it doesn't mean he/she knows it all
@@biloz2988 hahaha mangoes are NOT passion fruit and have nothing to do with passion fruit. Different fruits ripen differently. I didn't say the ones that I showed on my table were the ones I grew, in fact, I said they came from the supermarket. Slightly wrinkled is a good indication, but that doesn't mean smooth ones can't be ripe either. Stop arguing.
I was surprised to know they are so expensive and that you bite the seeds. I always had those on my backyard, never had to pay, in fact I ate like 10 as I watched this video, and I just swallow the seeds, everything together without biting on anything. Like, just drink it
I wouldn't advise you swallow the seeds without chewing... they could get stuck in your appendix and cause appendicitis... if they are anything like guava seeds.
It depends on where you live. It is a vine and should grow up a trellis or a fence or something. :) I would taste them first before you try and grow it. But I always recommend people growing things. :)
Was the passion fruit from your friend the same color? Well, let me tell you something when people use commercial fertilizers or pesticides especially it makes fruits bitter and sour. I would hope that they're not already doing this in the passion fruit industry? But I wouldn't doubt it. Like organic grapefruits I can eat them without any sugar whatsoever.
Oh the home grown passion fruits are so much better than these shown in the video. So so so much better. And so much cheaper. This past season my friends got nearly 200 passion fruit. At the store they cost like 2$ for 1! But freshly picked will always be better I think. I have still tasted decent passion fruit bought from the store. I am not sure what pesticides are used for commercially grown passionfruit. At least here in the Phoenix area no pesticides are needed because the fruit doesn't seem to get bothered by any insects. But then again, I have only experience local backyard grown ones here in the Phoenix. I don't think there are any commercial growers here. Now in a place like Hawaii or Florida where they have huge fields of them and different insects that may be a different story.

Good to learn about this fruit. Mine is presently bearing fruits yet to ripe. I am anxiously awaiting the fruits to ripe from Ikere Ekiti Ekiti State southwest Nigeria

Why did you give the plant away. There is a passion fruit tree by where I live. How do I start a plant?
It got way too big for my patio. snip off a few new shoots from the plant. Trim them down do have only one leaf on them and plant them in a pot. Keep it watered. Do a handful of them, because not all of them will root.
Thank you! I will let you know!

I never had a sweet passion fruit. I Only had them in Colombia in juice and it super delicious with sugar of course😬 in Florida in grocery stores its sold in bags frozen pulp. It taste delicious
Yeah passion fruit juice is so good! :)
I just found one growing wild in South Carolina.
Awesome!!
Where in South Carolina? I live in Denmark.
That is awesome! If you ever get the chance to taste some fresh ones, definitely try those as well!

My dear
The Maracuja is the same as the passion fruit. It is named by the missionaries to Brazil.
The Brazilian type is yellow and bigger, but in other regions it’s darker (purplish and becomes black as it ripens

Hello sir, I am from the Eastern part of Nepal 🇳🇵 And here it is available commonly, and we call this here by the name "Garendel" .
Awesome!!
I guess that name comes from "Granadilla" which is another name for Passion Fruit
Glad you like it. That is very cheap!
That seems so expensive for just one. Here in the UK, we can get them for £1 for 3 in the supermarket. Great video anyway; I'm really trying to binge more on fruit than processed goods, I think it's all about habits.

You don't have to chill it before eating, but you can if you want.

@@biloz2988 hahaha mangoes are NOT passion fruit and have nothing to do with passion fruit. Different fruits ripen differently. I was surprised to know they are so expensive and that you bite the seeds. I always had those on my backyard, never had to pay, in fact I ate like 10 as I watched this video, and I just swallow the seeds, everything together without biting on anything. Like, just drink it

I do! :) Here is the Dragon fruit video. ua-cam.com/video/5-zK4-ewKuE/v-deo.html

Would you recommend growing this in the front lawn?
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Very interesting! Well I actually just purchased a small half acre in Florida. I was looking up the passion fruit because I wanted to find out as much as I could to grow it.
