Dennis, Lindley is more than a slide player. He plays banjo, fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki, saz, chumbush, and more. Check out his "official bootleg" live recordings with Wally Ingram or Hani Naser on percussion. I saw him play at one of these solo/duet shows; I had brought along a couple of young teenagers, and Dave and Wally gave the boys guitar picks and drumsticks, autographed their T shirts, answered their questions, and conversed with the boys as equals. It was a fine thing to see!
Hello again, good 'un. I just want to add that your experience is typical of the late, great Mr. Dave. Kind, gracious, and also funny as heck. No one will ever replace him.

One Hundred Dollars Posted in Uncategorized on January 27, 2008 by blackshepherd Well, I can say that I got a check for $100. But not sure how I did. I ended up playing from 7-9pm then the River gods started warming up. They didn’t get started till almost 10pm with sound issues. They were good but the vocal mix could have been much better. They make a good presentation and seem to have a good following. There were about 30 people in the immediate stage area and about 50-75 more throughout the bar. I did alot of The Band covers; Dylan…etc and got no comments whatsoever from anyone. The only I got was from a couple of guys at the end of the bar who applauded occasionally and asked me to “do Jimmy”….I was very nervous in the beginning but got going and I think I did ok for the first hour and should have taken a break after a good song but I plodded right on through the whole 100 minute slot. At the end I was really fucking up on “Oh! Darling”…for some reason I got off key twice and it really sounded bad…it’s the first time that’s ever happened to me….so it sucks to do worst at the end cause I think that’s what people remember…plus there’s more people there toward the end…but whatareyagonnado? I have to give myself credit for doing it and facing down the anxiety/fear again. I certainly didn’t bomb and I didn’t dissociate per se but definitely too much mental energy was involved with attending to fear. I got the best response from “Can’t Find My Way Home”. But this is to be expected. Everybody that ever plays in front of an audience has experienced this is some form so I’ll chaulk it up as an accomplishment. It was a paid professional performance and if I can do it there I can do it elsewhere and I think it will be easier for me in places where I’m a complete stranger…I’ll enjoy that element of it I think. But the immediate challenge will be to get to Austin and start writing original songs. Hopefully the live-in studio thing will pan out…that would make all the difference so I’m hopeful. One thing to comment on is the feeling of slinking out of the place with my equipment with my head down like I’d done something wrong…it’s weird…I’ll have to get over that somehow…the expectation that people are going to say something negative…it blocks me from accepting positive feedback…something to work on. So I did some songs really well, some fairly well and one or two not so well…so time to let go of it and move on…I got a check for $100…let’s shoot for $200 and an original song. I noticed that most of Rivergod’s songs were very simple. The lead singer/songwriter played mostly in C major and maybe G…very simple arrangements but with drums; peddle steel guitar; lead guitar and bass…it filled out very well. Plus he was a pretty good showman/performer…appropriate…not over the top. But boy…if ever it was pressed home…simple songs…they can always be fleshed out later.

I kissed Erin last night
you know
the Goddess of Ireland
blessings she did bestow
I know it’s hard to believe
I kissed her full on the lips three times
and I did receive
a fourth for good luck
for infinite rhymes
courage and pluck
she led me to the place
with whispers through the ether
for to endow me with a garland of grace
being destined to love her
and to know well her face
all I did was to inter
the trash left around her shrine
in America
she could not alone be mine
she made it clear
but she would make my words shine
many soldiers and poets have her ear
Lyre the angel was to her left
his foot was extended
for those of faith and hope not bereft
and so he lifted me above the dead
on her right was a soldier keeping watch
the angel let me kneel on his knee
while I reached across
all rein was set free
with the sign of the cross
and a kiss from her lips
during the second kiss
she granted eternal cosmic trips
to know my twin soul and infinite bliss
she said I’d be an Irish rover
sacred love came with a third kiss
then I kissed her all over
she promised me a ring
the fourth was for good fortunes
endless words
protection and tunes
to shatter the proudest swords
she asked me to wait
while she got undressed
Erin adjusted my fate
granting me in the sight of the blessed
soon with a date
my soul was caressed
she said she’d meet me in the flesh soon
she makes love to patriots soldiers and poets
always under a full moon
I’d be marked and my lover would know it
she would appear as an angel
known as Shawn (Colvin)
whose duty would be to tell
where to wait for the new dawn
this angel would sing me into a trance
and when I awoke she would ask me to dance
safe in heaven no more to roam
my immortal beloved
with silver tears she would welcome me home
end

There is no-BODY like David Linley! I know, I looked.
Lindley is a badass. Greatest slide guitar player alive. Bonnie ain't so bad herself.
Welp, I agree with every word in your post--except the word "alive". 💔Dang, that heavenly band is getting bigger all the time. :(
Hello again, good 'un. I just want to add that your experience is typical of the late, great Mr. Dave. Kind, gracious, and also funny as heck. No one will ever replace him.
I am 99% sure I was at this show! unless this lineup played Red Rocks more than once....
I saw these guys on this tour, which was in 1999 which you probably know but thank you SO much for posting this! The show I saw at The Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho was amazing! Good memories..
Like a cosmic locomotive coming to bring us all home to David's secret getaway in some un charted Hobbit hole in deep deep deep space surrounded by Leprechaun grace and music and love and bliss and unlimited kisses. Peace David Shawn Callie Arthur forever with you dear sweet Angel of badassedness. Kisses

Well, I can say that I got a check for $100.
I mean, fuckin WOW!!!!
In Red Rocks....twist twist
Looks like Tommy Shannon on bass (from Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble).
Nope! It's Kevin McCormick. He's played bass with everybody: Nils Lofgren, Jackson Browne, CSN, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayall, Melissa Etheridge, Robben Ford, David Lindley, and many others.
Jackson on the Teisco 😜
And at Red Rock.
❤no lies mates
