@@thrillcat , from what I've heard, Lindley is quite ill (long Covid, pneumonia, and kidney issues) and hasn't been able to gig for several years. His friend Douglas Reynolds organized a benefit T-shirt sale a few months ago to help pay Lindley's medical bills. I found out about it too late to be able to donate or buy a shirt but perhaps something like this will be arranged again. The fact that a musician of David's caliber is so ignored by the music industry that he needs to have a T-shirt sale to pay his bills is just insane; It's a serious indictment of both our for profit medical system and the music business.

As the late great David Lindley has been on my mind a lot the last few days, I've often thought that GE Smith is another guy who has not gained the fame he deserves as an American Treasure. And, that's has not that been what either guy was after - they are/were just two guys who love music, and have earned our admiration through pure achievement. So many people today are just famous for being famous, or for having a big mouth or a big butt. These two have brought far more joy to the world than anybody who has gained notoriety for saying stupid crap or complaining about some imagined indignity like their coffee being two degrees too cold.. It really gave me a big smile to see this video come up due to some magical mind reading UA-cam algorithm. Seeing these guys together is a real highlight of my week. Thanks for posting it, even if it was two years ago and it took me this long to see it. If you ever saw GE smith serving as chosen band leader for a group of people like Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynn, Neil Young, and Joe Walsh on stage in a concert ALL AT THE SAME TIME, and then you see him point at David Lindley and hear him say "There ain't nobody else like that, I've looked, man, I've looked, and there ain't nobody else like that," you know he is a man who knows of what he speaks. There are a number of tributes to David Lindley floating around on UA-cam. Great musician and bandleader that he is, you can take GE's word for it. We lost a one-of-a-kind this week, the likes of whom the world will never see again. Rest in peace, David, the angel band in heaven just got a shining new star.

I agree, Its that special smile when musicians play together and they are totally getting into listening to the person they are playing with. And when its really good they might just start cracking up laughing. As a guitarist of over 50 years myself, this is also something I have personally experienced and there is nothing quite like it ; One of my biggest pet peeves is when people get on-line and try to make music into a competition. I just cant stand that. For example they will say thing like this guitarist is so much better than that guitarist. So I once again for about the 100th time I say Music is not a competition! Then I will point to Eric Clapton's blues festivals as an example. I tell them to watch and see how you can tell all of those guitar hero's are having just a blast watching their heroes play with a HUGE smile on their face. The farthest thing from their mind is making a competition out of it !!!

That's pretty much the norm for him, he's had the privilege and pleasure of working with so many of the greats and loving every minute. He's often in the background and you may not notice he's even there, but he might be the one giving everyone else their cues. I loved it when he was the music director of the SNL house band.

I got the pleasure to briefly talk with Mr. Dave, after a local, neighborhood show. He was so gracious & apologetic, as I approached him while he was packing up his stage gear. The conversation was about bouzoukis, noticing one of his in the background on this video. Dave said cello strings work fine, in a pinch.
One of my very favourite shows of about 10, was at a small stage, during a folk festival. He was jamming with Kelly Joe Phelps, an Okinawan sanshin player, an African gourd percussionist & another drummer...some multi-cultural groove fusion. Those special, once-in-a-lifetime moments, hardcore, live music fans can especially relate to.

I'd have loved seeing this show. Great American Music Hall is the place for small acts, acoustics, vibes, homey feel, etc. In the late 70s I saw Joe Pass there. I was amazed that one guy, with a chair & one guitar with a small amp was all that was needed.
These two guitarists are legends in their own right.

By now, Cousin Figel, I'm sure you're aware that David Lindley passed away yesterday after a long illness. For his last few months, he simply was physically incapable of playing in public.
BTW, I'm sure Mr. Dave would be pleased to know that he inspired you to buy a lap steel guitar--and I'll bet he'd love it if you studied and continued to play it, so don't give up!
