Dad had A 39 mercury, that was one kick ass fine car. Suicide doors, huge car. Drove my sister and her wedding party, in style to her wedding!! Brilliant red, with wide white wall tires. Greeted by a piper playing Marries wedding,( my sisters name) Sadly that car was sold, still in the local area though. But never get it back.
2:18 That blues harp takes my breath away and I’ve even learned to play it myself and then you’re breathless from how complex and in the soul Norton is playing here.
Steve’s take on this classic 70 year old song is EPIC. This tune has been evolving with Steve’s understanding of the blues and this may be the best take yet
@@daveylee4677 Thanks, Google User. This song (Mercury Blues) was written in 48, this performance was in 83. Not sure where Crossroads/Cream came into play (or why).
I saw Steve Miller in concert twice and in both concerts every single second of each show was enjoyable. The man knows how to put on a show. You never have to wait for the hit single they play on the radio because every single song was so commercial and you could rock out to each song. Plus he seems like a pretty smart and down to earth guy, not like some of these rockers who abuse themselves with excessive drugs and alcohol and end up dying young. I definitely look forward to seeing him perform live again because I know I would always enjoy myself at his shows from beginning to end.
Lord have mercy, this is HOT! The studio version is killer, but OMG, this is so hot. Steve really learned how to use his voice! He has almost perfect pitch, and MAN, does he have all the feels! What an amazing performance!
The harmonica work in this song is good. I have played the harp since I was just a youngster. After about 50 years of playing it I can say that. Playing this particular instrument well is not easy. It also involves knowing when to stop in a particular song. That can be difficult. Because you want to wail. But that is not always a good thing. It is a backup instrument after all. Playing the harmonica on it's own however is quite rewarding. Then you can wail. And it is an expression of your mood. I always feel better after a session on the harp by itself. It is good therapy.
Thanks, This song is one of my all-time favs, my mother had a Mercury Murader. it was bright yellow and she loved that car and had it for years. this song also reminds me of her. :D good times.
I saw Steve when I was late teens and early 20s several times.... .....and just saw him earlier this year at 66.......we've cruised up and down that road a few times between then
What a great blues rhythm, stevie at his best. As a young boy at the age of 14 in 1977 i became miller fan. Greetings from northern germany, County and free old Farmer republic dithmarsha.
I was a teenager, just finishing up college time and discovering hi-fi, enjoying my first stereo system and looking 100 times a day to my freshly installed speakers queening in the room... real music coming out of it... and Hendrix... CSNY... Steve Miller ... pure and never ending joy !!! ( dont bugger that joint my friend...)
I agree, Norton Buffalo could go where other harmonica players couldn't get to musically. He was equally talented on chromatic and diatonic harmonica. I was heavily influenced by his playing ability. R.I.P. Norton Buffalo aka phillip Jackson
I grew up in Santa Clara and sometimes on Saturday nights we would go to downtown San Jose and...cruise up and down 1st and 2nd streets. This tune is "America"...American culture...no matter where you are in America.
I never witnessed anyone getting a ticket for cruising. In later years cruising in Santa Clara became such a problem the SCPD would block off the "main strip" to discourage cruising. Maybe they passed out tickets during those times. I wasn't there.
Indeed, love Miller and Buffalo. Norton isn’t mentioned much these days. There are so so many amazing harp players now, and Norton should be cited as a major influence.
When I was in 6th Grade the Fly Like an Eagle came out, and even though I bought the album for the title track, I instantly loved this blues tune and it was always my favorite track
One of the best concerts I've EVER attended was Big Head Todd and the Monsters open for Steve Miller Band at OKC Zoo Amphitheater. Very special evening.
Lucky to catch shows from the 70s to the 80s. Some of the best music I've ever heard. Remember the bass solo with the Popeye theme. Hilarious! Love you Steve...
Got me a Mecury 2008 just before the ended it. A Volvo designed M3 Platform awesome car Premier AWD, traction control, Sync, leather, sound system, navigation best car I ever had. 265 HP v-6 with a 6 speed auto very fast and comfortable car with lots of room and trunk space.
I love this video, Miller looks so cool in it. And of course the song is cool. As is his playing & singing & all. And of course Norton Buffalo as always is great & cool. TY for the post.
yea baby, soo easy and so good. My favorite version of this song that was covered by many. Of course we have to thank the great writer and original performer of this song Mr. K. C. Douglas.
I saw the Steve Miller band in 1968. Steve apologized " Boz Scaggs was afraid to fly so we can't do the regular set. Is it OK if we just do a blues jam?" It was OK!!!
1977 saw Steve Miller but before Norton Buffalo was starter band when Steve Miller be came on stage everyone hollared Buffalo Buffalo San Diego back in the day USMC Camp Pendleton
'49 Merc? You betcha! Add the '53 Studebaker in "Going to Mexico" too and this man knows my heart. A little "Midnight Tango" now and the world is perfect.
Gotta know when to play , when to shut up. Buffalo does good in that department. Would have been nice to hear another solo at the conclusion by Norton. BTW I like jamming to miller.
I had to get a nice 97 bay shore grand marquis in a cool green high gloss finish and love to play this song up and through hilly areas 👍👍👍 One of the best cruisers with gas milage and fun there is . And I've had much faster 😁
Yeah I drove the 66 Mercury it out of fucking 440 in it and the four-barrel into 4-speed and that thing is a 66 Mercury Cougar and it just get up and boogie on down the road but didn't have no brakes
Bone to pick with those who made this video. The artificial crowd noise in the background is annoying. There is a time and place for cheering, but no audience does it throughout the song from start to finish. Don't get me wrong, The band did a nice job. And I love musicians recorded live.
I love Steve miller. I love this song. It takes me back to college days. My boyfriend had a Mercury. Steve Miller and I have the same birthday

It sucks to think that greatness like this is pretty much a lost art. Steve is the opitomy of cool and he doesn't even have to try!!!
I've loved Steve Miller for over 40 years. These killer tunes got me thru a lot of shit! Steve Miller goes on every road trip. Oh hell yeah!
Listened to rock for 40 plus years. His voice is one of a kind, instantly recognizable.
And I never tire of listening to it.
Yeah.. so elegant
It’s like it’s never lost that “young gun proving himself” tone. Makes you believe he truly lives and loves it.
Saw him on my 65th birthday in Waikoloa. With Dave Mason and John Mayer....it was a fantastic party...if you keep on dancing you'll never get old...
I wish I was you.Steve Miller,bigger than Texas.

Going to see Steve Miller on Thursday at Comerica Park in Detroit.. he could just play all blues and I'd be happy
I was at this concert. Just lived down the road from pine knob. It was my very first concert. Steve gave my school some free lawn tickets.

Vastly underrated as a blues musician. He was doing it in the 60's.
Love how the harmonica solo is cut short, especially when it is a big reason why the song rocks.
his guitar... his sound... his music... a legend... a man...a great!!!!!
Best Harp playing I've heard in a long time.

"It is a backup instrument after all."
Not if you're Charlie Musselwhite, Kim Wilson, Little Walter or Sonny Boys Williamson I and II, it isn't.
Paul Butterfield definitely played harp as a lead instrument.
People loved Norton wherever he went. What a great guy
Steve Miller is beyond cool!

How I wish Steve had given us much more in the way of blues guitar. He has it in him.
