Probably the best version of the song I've heard. Too bad we don't have a better quality recording of it

Saw him a number of times at the Strawberry Music Festival (when it was held at the beautiful Mather Camp near Yosemite). Whenever he appeared, he mesmerized us all with his exquisite playing and singing. Whether it was solo or with other musicians, he was the undeniable star. I will always remember and especially hold dear one Strawberry Festival (somewhere in late 1980 or early 1990) where he was the final performer on the last Sunday night of the festival. He ended his set with Richard Thompson’s “Tear Stained Letter”. It was a rockin’ song and his best performance of the night that had the whole audience singing the refrain with him: “. . . cry, cry, cry, if it makes you feel better - set it all down in a tear-stained letter”. It was the only time in 27 years of Strawberry Festival attendance that I experienced the entire audience leaving the show while continuing to sing the refrain all the way back to their campsites. You could hear the singing throughout the camp for at least 20 minutes after David had finished his performance. That refrain immediately came to mind, a fitting remembrance of David’s spirit when I heard of his death --- “. . . cry, cry, cry, if it makes you feel better - set it all down in a tear-stained letter”.

That's a wonderful remembrance ---- I've seen David play a number of times, both acoustically and with ElRayo-X, but never heard him cover a Richard Thompson song. PS, I've seen Richard Thompson play several dozen times as well....

    Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you.
As we are all still totally wrecked over this beautiful man's passing, we must remember that we all will be called home, eventually, when no one is looking....this man always payed it forward. R.I.P.
    So, on a lighter note.....
In 1986 (or there abouts) El Rayo-X was appearing at The Belly-Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. (I saw them there a couple of times) a few miles from my hometown of Escondido) and I made a point of arriving a little earlier than usual to catch him pre-show after their sound check to make a special "offering" personally to Mr. Dave himself of something near and dear to his well-known "shameful, lustful sickness" ( his words) for cheap & weird polyester. I presented to him two pieces of clothing - one pair of white Farrah slacks with green & yellow verticle stripes that looked just like Beech Nut Fruit Striped gum, with a wide bell-bottom flare - which he was very impressed with ("Where th' HELL did you find these? El-Habu is pleased!" he said with a fraternal bow) as well as a God-awful shiny Polyester buttoned shirt of black, red, and white swirls, with very wide lapels ("This shirt looks ANGRY" he said, holding it out and admiring it with a evil smile...
The only cost for them, I said, was if I could do for him MY Jimmy Stewart impression, seeing as how he was so well known for his. He said in this best Jimmy, "W-w-w-ell s-s-ure, of c-c-c-ourse, son!" and then channeling my Jimmy, I did mine for him.... and, although I can't say here what it was I said (I could, but I won't) but he threw his head back and roared, laughing so hard he almost pissed himself, I mean laughed for a solid 3 or 4 minutes, saying, "Oh! Oh! That's just The Shit, man, that's so messed up!! Oh m-a-a-a-n!!" and then had me repeat it for a member of the band who was standing nearby (rather Jorge Calderon or Bernie Larson, I can't recall now.)
Later, during the show, he repeated my line Jimmy Stewart style into the mike during their Ska-tinged "Werewolves Of London" and, while no one in the crowd had a clue what it meant, I was so proud of that moment, that I made someone that I admire so much so happy with laughter & joy with an inside joke that I'm sure he would remember and take with him, that made my night!!
The afternoon that he died I just sat down and teared up, like getting punched in the stomach, just in absolute disbelief.....it was hard to believe that someone so cool, with so much soul & once-in-a-lifetime talent as Mr. David Lindley could be taken away.....I am a guitarist as well, and David Lindley's stunning tone, touch & style runs deep, deep like the big muddy, but when I think of him I will always think of his laugh that night...that man, I tell you, was a conduit for soul & joy.... R.I.P., El Habu.

my father suffered a war- trauma
my mom had to force him to stop struggling while sleeping beside her in the night ....
he did not want me to play with guns in my childhood! - and in the end he was not able to see me looking into his eyes when he was in hospital to die....!
    so I hate wars !!!!!!!!!!!
so I love my father !!!!!!!!!!!
he was a brother not under the bridge but a part of my family, my life ...

Never met the man, but singing songs about the vietnam vets plight here after the war, he sounds like a sensitive man, a wonderful musician, and Jackson Browne probably would not have hung with him if he was not this genius and a humble, good person.

Check out the number of songs that Lindley has been known to perform over the years which tell a story of people struggling to survive and simultaneously trying to keep their dignity intact: COTTONMILL BLUES; TIJUANA; WELL WELL WELL; RAG BAG; PLAY IT ALL NIGHT LONG; POOR OLD DIRT FARMER; HOW CAN A POOR MAN STAND SUCH TIMES AND LIVE; WAMANOLO BLUES; I AM A PATRIOT; DO YOU WANT MY JOB; and the list goes on.

    • @goodun6081
      @goodun6081 8 років тому +7

For some of the songs, such as Ragbag, Quarter of a Man, Play It All Night Long and This Barstool's Reserved for My Heart being good examples, you don't quite know whether to laugh or cry. Such is "the human condition", joy and sadness all mixed together.....and I am very glad we have David Lindley here on earth and willing to share a piece of his very large heart with us !!!!!!

so I was over in Albuquerque last year.. truck in the shop.. so I'm in inexpensive motels.. they're not cheap... and the streets are full of homeless people... 2021... recent past... not old shell shocked vets.... kids... kids who are functionally illiterate and have no skills to sell... not someone else's kids y'all... those are our kids..
someone over there said... well we have camps for them but they're practically empty... they have to be clean and sober...
ye olde carrot and stick routine
I've been clean and sober for 40 years... because I want to be... definitely not because someone said I have to... that absolutely does not work... giving with strings is not actually giving is it...
I have some ideas that will help...
    but those kids are everywhere...
    let's do something...
    please
    por favor

so you know... those guys under the bridge were kids when they were shipped off to war... they are our kids too... our brothers mostly... women were not put in combat situations during Vietnam... PTSD it's called now... has lasting effects... my dad... 27 years.. lt colonel... WW2 and Korea... infantry... was a nuclear weapon engineer during the early 50s when I was born... 2 master's degrees in physics... he was drinking a quart of whiskey a day the last time I saw him... he told me he was a pacifist... that he walked across Europe in the mud and snow... uphill in both directions.... so his kids wouldn't have to live in a totalitarian state... it's taken me 40 years to figure out... he couldn't make it today... so he sent me

Saigon, it was all gone/ the same coke machines as the streets I grew up on/ down in a mesquite canyon, we come walkin' along the ridge/ me and my brothers, under the bridge....
Campsite's an hours walk from the nearest road to town/ up here there's too much brush and canyon for the CHP choppers to touch down/ ain't lookin' for nothin', just wanna live/ me and my brothers, under the bridge....
Come the Santa Ana's, man, that dry brush will light/ Billy Devin got burned up in his own campfire one winter night/ we buried his body in the white stone, high up along the ridge/ me and the brothers under the bridge ....
Had enough of town and the street life/ over nothin' you end up on the wrong side of someone's knife/ now I don't want no trouble, and I ain't got none to give/ me and my brothers under the bridge....
I come home in 72, you were just a beautiful light/ in your mama's dark eyes of blue/ I stood down on the tarmac, I was just a kid/ me and my brothers under the bridge.....
Come Veteran's Day I sat in the stands in my dress blues/I held your mother's hand/ when they passed with the red white and blue/ one minute you're right there.....then something slips.....
