Rex you do bring the entire whiskey community lower but that's a good thing most people were on their high horses, let them come roll around in the dirt with us and see the true joy of whiskey :)
Balevine worker #1:"We just got a year's worth of peat delivered." Balvenie worker #2: "But we only have one week to use it..." Balvenie worker #1: "Okay"
What to do while sitting in the hospital room awaiting the arrival of my first born son? Watch a review from the Whiskey Vault, of course! Please raise a glass with me to welcome wee Elias Alexander Patterson into the world.
I’m growing to like the channel more. Not gonna lie, Rex was the reason I haven’t subscribed for this long, but he’s growing on me. Good vibes guys. Love your ending, best part.
You guys are cool as hell and I'm really grateful for the information you give you also make a great video and your fun to watch I wish I had half the knowledge you had thank you for the uploads
I picture the Balvenie master distiller looking like Doc Brown going...”More wood! Double the pleasure double the fun! More smoke! Gimme some tires! Give me peat! Get me a guy named Pete! All your PEATS belongs to me!
If you notice, as Rex gets better at tasting, his beard becomes more similar to the Som. It’s my theory that the medallion is one of TWO rewards for finishing the class, the other is the excellent beard you grow.
Carolina barbeque is my favorite, no question. Saw this one in the store today, passed on the high-ish price and wish I hadn't. Luckily scotch doesn't move like bourbon so it'll definitely still be there next week.
Gonna nerd out here and say it: back in the day a lot of Scottish distilleries used peat instead of wood, coal or steam. It was a cheap, readily available resource. When they laid the railway into the Highland and Speyside region, coal became easier accessible. When foreign markets grew, the softer Irish style was a benchmark and that pretty much settled it for peated whiskies, Islay remaining the exception to the rule
Glenmorangie actually released a peated version (Finealta) back in 2011 that was their recreation of what the whisky tasted like in the early 1900s. I definitely wish it wasn't a one-off because Finealta was delicious.
Would highly recommend trying the 2008 Deanston Bordeaux cask, I enjoyed it... Especially for having almost 59% alcohol by volume it seemed super friendly. Would like to see what y’all think.
This is the most underrated comment on UA-cam. Edit: this was a pun (I think). I may have thought too deeply about this and drew comparisons that were not meant to be.
@@the-chillian I just watched this video again, 6 months on, and crawling through comments, tried to like yours again. Thank you, and cheers, you magnificent bastard!
I have a bottle of the 2002 Peat Week (37/52), the first ever of the Peat Week editions - yours, I believe would be Week 34/52. It's a fantastic, smokey drop - bought it in Ballater, Aberdeenshire, this Easter 2022 👍
It looked like Rex wanted to actually talk more about the flavors and was going to compare it to some other whiskey, then it went off the rails. This is one of my favorites, but I cannot find any more. I will be nursing my bottle for as long as I can. I found one last Christmas, and have not seen one locally since.
Rex, take a picture of your hair as it is in this video and then go to a barber daily and have it trimmed just so. It is the best of the many looks you've had over the many episodes. Daniel, you are impeccable as alway.
My bar is never ever without the carribean cask. I enjoy it immensely. I was looking to see if they ever reviewed it. That's how I ended up on this one.
Rex and Daniel you're ruining everything!. By telling everyone, including me, about all these delicious whiskeys I can no longer find them on the shelf! Finally managed to find Michter's American. Thanks to both of you for the on going education.
I love how i am sitting here watching you two lads drinking fancy whisky while i sit here drinking cheap beer. But hey at least you two are good company.
You guys should try some South African Whisky, we have 2 insane brands - Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky and Three Ships, both from near Cape Town. I'd send them but would probably go bankrupt faster than I currently am buying the amazing whisk(e)ys you guys keep reviewing
Benromach is a Speyside whisky that releases peated OBs. Also don't forget Campbeltown does peated whislies too. In fact, until modern times weren't most scotches made with peat?
Then Daniel can't do his research and tell us all about the mash bill, sourcing, backstory, conversation he had with the distiller, barely relevant humble-brag about something that happened with his band, etc.
@@the-chillian no, my idea is that he would select about 20 bottles and go ahead with the research. Then have someone else pick one out of that list and do it blind. Then Every time they do one, he would add another to the list.
@@the-chillian yeah. Daniel will most likely be able to figure out what it is, but I figure that way it's as close as you can get to getting a true blind for both of them while still being able to get some more in-depth background info from Daniel.
Un-related to this video completely but I was wondering if you guys have ever tried anything by Low Gap. I recently came across their Bavarian hard wheat bottle at a friend’s house and I find it incredibly unique and different. Being into many different types of scotch’s and whiskeys especially Islay whiskeys, I found this to be a refreshing change of pace being aged in ex rip van winkle casts. I think the people wouldn’t mind hearing Rex’s expert review on the whiskey since he is such always wanting to mooch new “experiences”
A few more cork pop noises than usual for this episode. I feel it necessary to ask. I have seen Rex pause to appreciate cork noises so.. What are Rex and Daniel's favorite bottle/cork combinations to produce the perfect cork pop noise?
Love this whisky. It's a Speyside but it's using Highland peat if I read correctly. I find that interesting but have no real idea what the difference would be between a Speyside peat and a Highland peat. What's a Speyside specific peated that I could compare it to?
i do love me some balvenie. Still hoping you review the Game of Thrones Whiskies. Johnny Walker did a White Walker batch, and a lot of other scottish distilleries are doing their own single malt's for each of the houses. I'm most excited to try House Lannister 9yr Lagavulin.
I am very mixed on the White Walker. Presentation is great, but the whiskey is not really very interesting. It is supposed to be drank ice cold, Winter is Here like on the side of the bottle. I only taste peat and am missing other flavors. I will keep trying and see if it grows on me.
@@Mike-fs3bv extreme temperatures tends to mask other nuance flavors, so only bold flavors really stand out. I think it was mainly made for marketing purposes, but still a different idea
This channel has become unacceptable for my wallet. Since discovering your videos, and continuously binge watching, I have purchased full bottles of Michter's American, Hibiki Japanese Harmony, and Macallan 12 Sherry Oak Cask. I am currently on a frantic search for Ironclad Bourbon somewhere in the Fort Worth area... No luck yet. You've made a collector out of me again, damn you both to whiskey hell (You still get to drink whiskey as much as you like, but it's always whiskeys you don't *entirely* enjoy).
Just fell in love with talisker soooooo guud and as a plus my wife might like it too just wish it was cheaper here like everywhere else everything literally costs more here than everywhere else in the world idk why it pisses me off wish I could find an establishment that would have all these good peated whisky's at reasonable prices ugh my tastes for this peated whisky is what I would call a gouging and I am sad
Hi guys, Wednesday we will be laying to rest my father in law Jerry. Could you raise a glass of Canadian club in his honor. His all time favorite was Canadian club sherry cask finish. Thank you.
Ok... I have an idea, make rum cake but with whisk(e)y's, like straight up caramel bourbon and an Irish that's all butter or short bread and maybe a smokey scotch, it could be a tribe episode or for dry week since you cook off 99.9% of the alcohol
Just watched this again and decided to open my 2020 release of Peat weak to compare with this 2017, and...... f@$* ..... it is NOWHERE close. Don't get me wrong, it's tasty, but this one you reviewed is something special and this newer version is completely subpar. So disappointed I didn't figure this out until my '17 was down to a few fingers. Here's hoping I encounter another in the wild on a dusty shelf.
Have you ever heard of a Scotch making a mixed barrel? I.e. alternating staves from bourbon and sherry barrels or heads from port barrels and staves from sherry barrels
Late reply, but it's illegal to do that. Compass Box made one along those lines like 20 years ago and got in trouble and had to stop making it. They have since released a volume two of the bottle. I cannot recall which bottle it was off the top of my head. Hedonism maybe.
Rex, Don't listen to the haters sir. Most of us are just engaging in shenanigans. And those that aren't, well they're a sad lot and not worth the bother now aren't they. lol
While I’ll like the idea of a BBQ war (vinegar based sauce all the way, plus white bbq sauce for chicken), I feel like most of the audience won’t be as passionate as us from the south and midwest.
QUESTION... What whiskys should you start with to get into smokey, peated whiskys? Should you start with the Lagavulin 16 or go go with a slightly peated whisky first. Are there different types of peated whiskys... Can you go over the top ways to start enjoying peated whiskys?

Just got this home and happy to see it reviewed here.
One of my favorite all time bottles. Completely surprised how amazing is tasted.
I saw others review last years pet week and they said it was way less peaty. I liked this so much I went back and got another bottle! So good
