my list of acceptable scotch is pretty simple, always like the Glenmorangie finishes, the Glenffidich and Glenlivets, Blue label Johnnie, that's about it.
Guys, I’m a huge fan, and I have a content suggestion that would also solve a problem for me. I made a horrible mistake by buying a bottle of Octomore just prior to the Covid shutdown. It was glorious. I particularly loved how deep and dark the flavors were. Not so much the smoke or peat, though it’s Octomore, so you can’t ignore that, but the dark dried fruit flavors that the smoke is wrapped around which most attracted me. Here then is the problem. It’s not an inexpensive whiskey and with all the uncertainty created by Covid lockdowns, I’m just not in a position to spend Octomore kind of money at the moment. I’d like to be a bit more prudent. I love Laphroaig of course, and while that may come from the same Islay tree as Octomore, it seems to me to be on a very different branch. So I was wondering if you can offer some suggestions that stay true to the flavors to the degree that it can be done, but wander around the price points. A content suggestion what would very much appeal to me (and I hope to others), is one that starts with ‘if you’ve had and loved this relatively expensive and wonderful whiskey, and would like to go down that road in a more carefully budgeted way, here’s stuff to think about.’ Sort of follow the notes up and down the price points. It’s sort of an anti-snobbery way to look at the space, and no one can do that better than you guys. By the way, I’ve tried most of the Port Charlotte line, and while it was lovely, I didn’t find it even on the same road as Octomore. Maybe Octomore is so unique that it’s on a different road entirely than everything else. Maybe I’m just clueless. Fair enough. But I think this would be an interesting and useful bit of content to get from experts like you guys. PS I’ve been in New York City for 30 years now, and you guys remind me of absolutely everything I miss most about Texas.

I used this video as sort of a starting off point, and after trying most of the suggestions on this list, I have fallen in love. Thank you very much for introducing me to the wonderful world of whiskey.
Dude, I live in KY and have trouble finding it at times. Most liquor stores I go to have a limit of 1 per person for Buffalo Trace. It is also a really good bourbon
Dear God, that ad... What has been seen can never be un-seen. Also, yeah, I've never seen Buffalo Trace in person in northern Virginia. I can occasionally find Eagle Rare in 375ml bottles.
From each category I feel like I'm most likely to find Glenfiddich 12, Jameson, Wild Turkey 101, and Lagavulin 16 at a bar. It's weird how bars, if they carry a smokey scotch, generally carry Lagavulin, however, Laphroaig 10 is a close second.
Saturday, September 5th, the day that the Marketing department at NordVPN discovers that Rex should not be permitted total creative control on their ads.
I live in Oregon and I can’t believe buffalo trace is difficult to find in other parts of the country. I don’t think I’ve ever seen less than 20-30 bottles at any particular store. It’s my go to bourbon and I use it to introduce a lot of people to bourbon.
Man. I fuckin love Laphroaig. And here in Germany every now and then Amazon has really really good prices. The last bottle I got was the Laphroaig triple wood for 25€
Living and growing up in Kentucky, whiskey is like apart of "manhood" around here and can find it on every corner. Bourbon is not only easy to find when it comes to just about any type considering 80 percent is made here, it is also a way of life.
I cant stand bulleit products. They feel so thin and one dimensional to me. I havent purchased a rye, only high rye bourbons, but im curious about redemption rye
Great episode guys. Loved it all. Only issue is that Ardbeg 10 should have been number 1 in smokey instead of Emma's choice!! Do like the Laphroaig though.
@9:12 Glenfiddich. Glenmorangie and Glenlivet..... Reminds me of the song from Crash Test Dummies "When I go our with artists" - lyrics: "What if the artists ran the TV? All the ads would be for fine scotch whiskey: Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, the whole single malt family" Love what you guys do especially when it crosses over with a song from the early 90s that I like!!!!
My take on smoky scotch: take a perfectly good whiskey, and steep the insert of a Sharpie in it before drinking. Scotch can be GREAT, but when I tried Laphroig, I thought the bottle was skunked/bad, until I realized that it was just the peat. Literally couldn't give it away... Also, I'd love to see some Rye episodes, too. Never knew I loved it, until you turned me on to Bulleit. And speak of affordable -- Old Forester Rye is crazy good and cheap!!
Hey Whisky Tribe! Thank you guys for your videos! I just turned 21, and was looking for a lot of suggestions and you guys have helped a lot! I’m from Kentucky so of course I’m accustomed to Jim and jack, but thank you for doing these reviews. You guys are awesome and keep it up! Love the content.
The last time I went to s liquor store I saw Ardbeg 10 for $50 and Laphroaig 10 for $61. I was surprised to see such a huge jump in price for Laphroaig.
I have noticed that here in Texas too. Laphroaig 10 is over $60 but Ardbeg 10 is still only $50. My last bottle of Bowmore 12 I bouhgt late last year for $50 and now it costs $68 in the same exact liquor store. After the release of the Wee Beastie ($35), I suspect that Ardbeg is going to start raising their prices along with their Islay competitors very soon. I suspect that by this time next year the 5 year Ardbeg Beastie will cost $50 and the Ardbeg 10 will cost between $60-70. Sadly,.. I will still buy it anyway.
Green Spot is very loved & easy to find at bars/restaurants/liquor stores here in Cincinnati, Ohio... BUT Buffalo Trace is IMPOSSIBLE to find without going to Kentucky.
Hey, I’m a Cincinnati guy too! Most stores in NKY have it all the time. If you’re lookin to check out some local place I recommend Second Sight distillery in Ludlow. Cool little place that’s got its own coffee shop connected to the distillery.
The one's on the south side of Chicago: Redbreast 12 - been looking for 2.5 months to find, still can't. $70-80 Wild Turkey 101 - regularly on the shelves. ~$40 Monkey Shoulder - regularly available. $35-45 Laphroaig 10 - hit or miss depending on the store. Some have it regularly, some have it once in a while. $40-50
Glenfiddich 12 (the first scotch I ever tried) is the definition of accessible-in price and availability as well as an being an great introductory scotch. Grocery stores sell Glenfiddich 12 and I've spent more filling up my car's gas tank than a that first bottle of scotch.
I mean I have some double cream in the fridge right now, but my hand cream collection is woefully lacking I'm afraid. Maybe I need to watch more of the Creamy Vault to help educate me as to how to build out my collection.
Angel's Envy Rye is a great whiskey that anyone can enjoy especially if you like maple syrup and marshmallowey notes and Caribbean rum aftertaste. Ryes are seriously underrated as well as straight/single malts. Woodford Reserve's straight malt is a great whiskey full of body and richness with a subtle sweetness on the front.
You can pour that angels envy on pancakes. Redemption does a good rum cask rye thats less expensive and less sweet. As far as accessible, good, affordable rye, I love Old Overholt. A great whiskey perfect for sazeracs
Oh wow, I stumbled on this channel and thought this two would have the alcohol tolerance of a fireengine and livers like two pickled plums but around the Glenfiddich 12 mark they actually start to look drunk and rosy cheeked.
After trying the Laphroaig QC and 10 side by side, I can't drink the 10 again. The QC has this beautiful oily texture that I can't feel in the 10, plus, it isn't that much more expensive!
Hmm, sitting here sipping Ardbeg 10, and after seeing this vid I was gonna order some Laphroaig 10, (never tasted it) Would you recommend buying that first and then go for the QC later, or just go straight for the QC and never look back? Price diffference is like $4, but I don't wanna buy both now... I'd say there's a better chance of getting the 10 in a bar somewhere, so I don't need to buy a whole bottle to taste it..
It's crazy that this is only a year old and mentions Buffalo Trace as accessible. It's one of the rarest bourbons out there in my experience. I love it but have only seen two bottles in the past six months.
You glorious, weird bastards. I tried skipping the ad and wound up in the middle of the hand cream vault bit and said "OK I clearly missed something." and needed context and had to go back to the start of the ad.
Green Spot is great, but Yellow Spot is a 12 year that is also very good. They’re both on the expensive side with $65 for Green and $120 for Yellow. Love me some Irish whiskey.
Thank you for this. I know creating content requires exploring lots of different things, but I swear most of the drink mixing and tasting channels are just trying to show off how extra they are with drinks you've never heard of with ingredients you'll never be able to buy. It's rather annoying, and I must say your channel is a breath of fresh air in comparison.
I love Ardbeg. Its safely in my top 5. But for an accessible smoky scotch I would grab Talisker 10. I also hope, that Ledaig 10 will get more attention. Its nearly as smoky as Ardbeg. Yet its sweeter and much more pleasant for everyday drinking. Btw Kilkerran 12 is also an amazing mildly smoky scotch. But I dont know, how much is that one available in the US.
People want what they can't have. I believe that Buffalo Trace (Sazerac) has designed their entire marketing strategy around this fact, and basically mastered it. SO overhyped!
It makes sense up against Maker's and WT101, though. Ultimately, these are just the top end of the bottom shelf. None of them are going to be amazing, but they have a lot to show for the price and availability.
@@Daniel-zq3wq ahhh, I mean HH makes substantially more complex, available bourbon than BT while being in the same price category. We all have our own taste profiles.... But BT is a sweet simple not readily available bourbon.... Which means it doesn't really qualify for this list.
Seems like the bottle I end up rebuying is Oban, the 14. Here, at least it’s easy to find at Costco for a steal. $35 or so cheaper than BevMo. South SF Bay Area. I like it a lot, and the price at Costco makes it even better.
Need help guys, being this video kinda noob friendly I tought I might ask: I just started with whisk(e)y, I had about 6 in total, an easy bourbon was my second (wild turkey 81), right after a yamazaki 12. Now, the point is not how much nicer was the yamazaki... rather the malt vs corn taste... I din't like that corn taste that much...it's kinda pushing me away from bourbon, and I don't want that to happen. I'm willing to try another couple of bourbons before giving up. Maybe is just wild turkey, maybe corn can do better than that. Any suggestions?
Perhaps try a wheated bourbon; I've often found they're less corn forward. Maker's Mark is pretty universally accessible, but Larceny and Rebel Yell are, I think, not impossible to find in many places
If you can find Buffalo Trace, I find that it's super approachable. Wild turkey 101 can be a little heavy handed in the cherry note in my opinion. If not Buffalo Trace maybe Elijah Craig if you're trying to keep it affordable
@@agiordano17 Thanks to you both guys I'll start with MM, it's easier to find... my goal at this point is to explore and find some kind of "favourite" in every category... if someone asks me what's my favourite bourbon, I'd hate to answer "none".
The glenmorangie discovery pack is a good "bang for your buck" introduction pack. Or if you want some variation on the cheap. So no surprise that glenmorangie made the list.

Being a whiskey fan in the US mustbe expensive as hell if I listen to you guys. Except for the craft stuff, I can get pretty much everything you guys review home delivered on the next day for about 60% of the price. Lagavulin 16 is 60€ , Ardbeg range is about 35€ for the 10 to 65€ for the Corry.
Jameson has the 'metallic' ethanol flavour, maybe that's why you can't drink it, or is too sweet for you. I enjoy it, but rarely drink it because I'm not into much sweet stuff right now.

For the $30 monkey shoulder costs me, I will always have two bottles on hand
you get to like, half a bottle and you say oh shit I better get some more of this before I run out
I prefer the Glenlivet, Glenfiddich or Glenmorangie over the Monkey Shoulder personally 🤔
@@GT-sj3si because monkey shoulder is a blend. It's shit Scotch.
bought the 1.75l the next time so I don't run out so soon
Buffalo trace is widely available in nebraska. Every grocery or liquor store has at least one variety on the shelf whenever i have looked for it.
Very difficult in FL :(
Super trendy in Texas.
Unlike Arbeg cultists, Laphroaig legions work from the shadows.
And only Lagavulin angels are overseeing this pity (peaty?) scramble below from the skies.
Laphroaig 10 is the first "expensive" bottle I've bought. Love it
Man. I fuckin love Laphroaig. And here in Germany every now and then Amazon has really really good prices. The last bottle I got was the Laphroaig triple wood for 25€
Also. I have a square foot of land now apperantly 🙃
@@tolga1cool that is good. We have the select at £23 in the super market and £28 for the 10 year old
Living and growing up in Kentucky, whiskey is like apart of "manhood" around here and can find it on every corner. Bourbon is not only easy to find when it comes to just about any type considering 80 percent is made here, it is also a way of life.
I know Rye didn’t make a strong showing but I will stand by Bulleit Rye as a very accessible and good quality whiskey
I cant stand bulleit products. They feel so thin and one dimensional to me. I havent purchased a rye, only high rye bourbons, but im curious about redemption rye
Laphroaig is my favorite scotch distillery...the flavors from the 10 to the 25 and everything in between are GREAT IMO.
Great episode guys. Loved it all. Only issue is that Ardbeg 10 should have been number 1 in smokey instead of Emma's choice!! Do like the Laphroaig though.
@9:12 Glenfiddich. Glenmorangie and Glenlivet..... Reminds me of the song from Crash Test Dummies "When I go our with artists" - lyrics:
"What if the artists ran the TV?
All the ads would be for fine scotch whiskey:
Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, the whole single malt family"
Love what you guys do especially when it crosses over with a song from the early 90s that I like!!!!
Secret trick for availability: move to Kentucky. It’s lovely here!
Matthew Abel but then I’d have marry my cousin!
Dude I still can't find certain grails here... and THEY'RE MADE HERE! Though the variety is plentiful.
Never noticed those shiny things until now. Now can never unsee them...
Dude, I didn't even *notice* the screw until Rex decided to point it out. And only because he said don't let it bother you is it now bothering me.
Id rather drink laphroaig than bulleit rye. Im definitely a bourbon man though
@Aidan Craig - and there’s the beauty of how diverse whiskey (and whiskey preferences) can be. Cheers!
@@rgracon indeed. Cheers dude
Laphroiag definitely beats Ardbeg, i like the oily brine
Hey Whisky Tribe! Thank you guys for your videos! I just turned 21, and was looking for a lot of suggestions and you guys have helped a lot! I’m from Kentucky so of course I’m accustomed to Jim and jack, but thank you for doing these reviews. You guys are awesome and keep it up! Love the content.
Really need to find a bottle of that Nord VPN, is that one available in the US?
That drink will channel your thought into a different place
The last time I went to s liquor store I saw Ardbeg 10 for $50 and Laphroaig 10 for $61. I was surprised to see such a huge jump in price for Laphroaig.
It's the opposite for me. Laphroaig 10 is 45-50 with Ardbeg 50-60.
Interesting.
Laphroaig is 37 here and ardbeg 10 is 45.
Limited quantities in Arkansas. Always find it in Missouri.
Hey, I’m a Cincinnati guy too! Most stores in NKY have it all the time. If you’re lookin to check out some local place I recommend Second Sight distillery in Ludlow. Cool little place that’s got its own coffee shop connected to the distillery.
That's madness. Can find it easily here in Ireland!
Allan Farrell don’t have to go too far to get to Kentucky from Cincinnati, just right across the river. Little inconvenient tho
Readily available in Michigan. Come on by!
The one's on the south side of Chicago:
Redbreast 12 - been looking for 2.5 months to find, still can't. $70-80
Wild Turkey 101 - regularly on the shelves. ~$40
Monkey Shoulder - regularly available. $35-45
Laphroaig 10 - hit or miss depending on the store. Some have it regularly, some have it once in a while. $40-50
My favourite whisk(e)y is the one I can find and afford.
Glenfiddich 12 (the first scotch I ever tried) is the definition of accessible-in price and availability as well as an being an great introductory scotch. Grocery stores sell Glenfiddich 12 and I've spent more filling up my car's gas tank than a that first bottle of scotch.
Ok, so first up... Creamy Vault needs to be a thing. Secondly, we need more Ooooogdaahl. That is all.
I see you’re a man of taste and sophistication. Undoubtedly, your own cream collection must be impressive.
its not ab-ig-inol-Ee, not abig-Nail-Ee, its Abignaile
Came for the whiskey, left satisfied with the creamy vault
I love Buffalo Trace and have a really hard time finding it in Ms.
Oh wow, I stumbled on this channel and thought this two would have the alcohol tolerance of a fireengine and livers like two pickled plums but around the Glenfiddich 12 mark they actually start to look drunk and rosy cheeked.
I mainly clicked for Daniel in the Liberace Cape. Stayed for the whiskey
Out of all the Nord VPN ads I've seen, that was certainly one of them.
I agree but I wouldn’t go so far as to not drink the 10 again
@@RenaxTM91 I'm no expert, maybe there are some complexities in the 10 that I just wasn't able taste. I'd definitely recommend trying it at a bar
Quarter cask is a very good bottle of Laphroaig
You better not try LORE then... That is one hell of a dram imo.
It's crazy that this is only a year old and mentions Buffalo Trace as accessible. It's one of the rarest bourbons out there in my experience. I love it but have only seen two bottles in the past six months.
You glorious, weird bastards. I tried skipping the ad and wound up in the middle of the hand cream vault bit and said "OK I clearly missed something." and needed context and had to go back to the start of the ad.
just did the exact same thing, glorious bastards
Green Spot is great, but Yellow Spot is a 12 year that is also very good. They’re both on the expensive side with $65 for Green and $120 for Yellow. Love me some Irish whiskey.
for me, Ardbeg reminds me of the smell of your clothes after spending a few hours around a campfire
@Kesha Hardel that is so creepy
In Chicago, Buffalo Trace is very common. Although, the price is usually hit or miss. You can get it from the range of $18-$29
Didn't realize Jackson Galaxy the cat guy was so into whiskey
Thank you for this. I know creating content requires exploring lots of different things, but I swear most of the drink mixing and tasting channels are just trying to show off how extra they are with drinks you've never heard of with ingredients you'll never be able to buy. It's rather annoying, and I must say your channel is a breath of fresh air in comparison.
Ardbeg 10 vs Laphroaig 10 is a battle for the ages and I'd be happy to get caught in the crossfire
I like ardbeg, but im not willing to pay the marketing. The NAS ardbeg whiskys are to expensive in my opinion.
Irish: Redbreast 12
, Bushmills, Jameson
Bourbon: Eagle Rare, Four Roses, Makers Mark
Sweet Scotch: Glenlivet 12, Monkey Shoulder
Smokey Scotch: Johnny Walker Black, Laphroaig Triple Wood
I love Ardbeg. Its safely in my top 5. But for an accessible smoky scotch I would grab Talisker 10. I also hope, that Ledaig 10 will get more attention. Its nearly as smoky as Ardbeg. Yet its sweeter and much more pleasant for everyday drinking. Btw Kilkerran 12 is also an amazing mildly smoky scotch. But I dont know, how much is that one available in the US.
You are spot on the money with Ledaig 10. Definitely less accessible, can be troublesome to find even in Scotland!!
This is the only channel that I look forward to the ad spots.
Let's be honest BT is a super simple less than average pour... Can't believe it made the list.
I agree. Its just okay for me.
Ardbeg is the most intriguing whiskey I’ve tried. Some days it’s great! Other days it’s just too much.
In the. Sweet Scotch category, I would pick Aberlour A’bunadh. Yes, it’s a cask strength but you can add water if you want…
I’m not a big smoky scotch person, but it brings me joy to know that members of the league of Laphroaig outnumbers the cult of Arbeg.
Good! More Ardbeg for me! 😊😎
Strangely Buffalo Trace is always quite easily available in Australia
Every time I try Wild Turkey 101, I end up ready to fight. -dirty bird.
where I live, it's always a huge gamble. Highland Park 12? Dalwhinnie 15? Glenmorangie Nectar D'or? It's vexing.
Need help guys, being this video kinda noob friendly I tought I might ask:
I just started with whisk(e)y, I had about 6 in total, an easy bourbon was my second (wild turkey 81), right after a yamazaki 12.
I’m in the league of Laphroaig
Nice. Your next upgrade is to Lagavulin 16...
lol.
buffalo trace is usually always in stock at my local super market here in england
Man I love the idea of the Smoky Monkey. I don't know if they just don't make it or if it is not accessible in FL. Can you guys do an Accessible Man's Smokey Monkey? Blend a couple whiskeys and maybe side by side compare if you guys still have that bottle🧐
The Spirit Monk[e]y vigorously concurs with this idea.
In reference to 8:00
Buffalo Trace is always in stock at Targets in Southern Ca. Lol
Love the creamy vault Scottish presenter.....you're lucky us Scots have a sense of humour or one could have taken offense to such shenanigans!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Indeed. Any people that enjoy top shelf ball busting are good people.
Here I am, in England, and all except for the Green Spot can be bought in your local supermarket, and for the most part are sub £40 (I think Lagavulin is usually around the £40 mark, maybe £45?)
Buffalo Trace is only £20 in Tesco!
@@jrd33 Oh I know! All too well! haha
It's nice to see Frodo still wearing his elven cloak even after all this time...
Thanks for including multiple categories
I like Monkey Shoulder with a touch of Ardberg. Kicks up that smokey flavor....
This! And Naked Grouse with Ardbeg is also very good!
signs you may be 'sampling' too much: 1:09 1:23 2:26 4:22 10:14 14:58 19:01 Next year: Top 10 of 8 categories.... do it!! Laphroaig 10 all the way. Staued true where Highland Park failed. Enjoyed this episode - keep em comin'
The Spirit Monk[e]y is not often early, but today is the day.
I've been drinking whisky for many years now and have quite the selection of bottles, BUT... I cannot, for the life of me, drink Jameson. I cannot.
Same soon as I smell it all i can think is aluminum can and i poor it out
Curious if it's the rye notes? Maybe I literally cut my teeth with rye so I like it. Do you like other Irish wiskies?
@@johnnycampbell3422 I love most Irish whiskeys, but every time I try a swallow Jameson I can't without making faces. Blergh.
Jameson has the 'metallic' ethanol flavour, maybe that's why you can't drink it, or is too sweet for you. I enjoy it, but rarely drink it because I'm not into much sweet stuff right now.
I've never tasted a drop of whisk(e)y in my life, but I can't get enough of this channel. It's so good.
Reason?
