HAAAHHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We heard it directly from your mom, Daniel. I have the green light to crank things up to BRUTAL. Let the hobbit hunt, commence!!!!
tonight is the second night I've had the 8 year, I remain firm that I prefer it to the 16. I also noticed that this is the first whisky that I have found the ash note that you have mentioned. I am an Ardbeg cultist as well as a Laphroaig fan and have not noticed this in either. Fantastic job as always!
Great and fun video. Thanks. My son got me this whisky for my birthday and am loving it. I was also wondering about glass styles so this was also interesting to watch. Slainte.
9:56 "Damn Canadians and their witchcraft!" (I actually got the canadian Gelncairn glasses because of this, and they really do make whiskey taste smoother somehow (for the not-so-smooth whiskies that is)) It's definitely witchcraft. Confirmed. 100%.
I use spiegelau glassware, definitely a fan . This whisky has more candied, sweet flavor and less of a prolonged & pronounced nuance than the 16yo imho. The 16yo is mossier and distinctively robust, with an earthier finish as opposed to this candied representation that presents itself more pleasantly all around. As a daily driver the 8 cannot be beat
Yes I agree with Daniel. Think of enjoying a nice wine. A thin glass just feels so much better for appreciating the flavor profile than a thick heavy glass. Just something I noticed over a period of time drinking spirits. A nice IPA also the same in my favorite Belgian thin glassware.
I’m with you on the Laphroaig 8 and I’m totally with you on the Norlan glass. It’s uncomfortable to sip from. It’s too fat. Great nosing glass. I am disabled and as a result, end up in bed at at 6:30 pm every evening. I always have a whiskey or four before sleep. In the morning, the glass will be dry but the whiskey nose is still there, minus the alcohol. Every whiskey leaves a different trace. To use this trace, the glass has to be totally dry (no residue). Use the unwashed (but dry) glass and fill with a different whiskey. Do this with something heavily peated and then use the dry, but unwashed glass with a light Speyside. Try also with peat and an Oban 14, to kick the Oban’s peat up a little bit.
A) I believe the "Canadian" glasses in question are manufactured by Glencairn as well. B) I would be interested to see you guys try the Reidel Whisky Glass and/or NEAT glass.
That's interesting. I wonder if they have some Glencairn voodoo that they're sprinkling into the glass designs. Now we have to compare 40+ whiskies across their glasses to be sure.
You're correct. The Canadian glasses are made by Glencairn as well and designed specifically for drinking Canadian whiskey. After doing some research, I think the wider base and mouth allows the liquid to spread across the mouth better making it smoother. Whereas the standard prob concentrates the flavors more. But that's just an opinion.
Hi Rex, the secret is that we use beaver tears and moose feomones in the mold to make the glasses. Ho boy I should stop the absinthe at 7 o'clock in the morning ... Greetings from the far north!
Damn, even sweeter than the 16? I already found the 16 to be sweet. Can't wait to try the 8. The glencairn is focussing the whisky on your tongue while the Canadian glass is allowing it to spread out more hence the smoothness.
@@WhiskeyVault I was wondering if it has something to do with the fact that your nose is in the Canadian glass whilst you drink and your nose is preparing your mouth for the alcohol ( the same way you body sends endorphins when it expects an impact)
Watching the back log of videos and this has to be one of my all time faves. Love the glass comparison and I think it was also the first time I ever got a comment read. I had completely forgotten they did the 8yo. I wanna get a bottle before it's gone so I can compare it with the 12yo 200th anny. This one seems way more tame than the cask strength 12yo, which is still a very heavy, robust whiskey even after watering it down.
First commenter! Take THAT! ! My favorite two lushes are back, celebrating the fine art of fermentation. The Sommel Yay! and T-Rex. Go get em, guys. I don't know; I'm in a strange mood. And yes. I'm sober. Stop judging.
Lagavulin never disappoints. I got lucky when I went to my local state store and found they were out of Lagavulin 16 but they had Lagavulin 8 in stock so I bought a bottle. As good as it was I felt hardly anything compares to the 16. Glad I got to try something different because of a chance circumstance. Great review gentleman hope the new distillery goes great. Send some product to the chalet premier in North lima Ohio please :)
I am Canadian and it is witchcraft. By the way I'm compiling a Whisk[e]y Vault quote book that I'll post soon. It will have all of the funniest quotes of the first 100 episodes. (yes Daniel a couple are from you).
8:50 I got one of those Canadian Whisky glasses in 2005-ish from the Liquor Board of Ontario (LCBO) for 4$ CAD upon the purchase of a bottle of Crown Roya. The box (which I kept) says distributed by the LCBO, conceived by Glencairn. 6:25 --> really?!?
Had the lagavulin, and idk, to me its very light in the beginning (of course also in color) and even the smoke is quite light to me. At least the smoke sticks around so that if you're eating food with it, it really improves how the food tastes. The finish is sweet with a sherry note to it than any minty note. No iodine or brine in the scotch.
I don’t get the fruit myself. There is no sherry here and Scots can’t work Bourbon cask for rich dark fruit it’s too cold here to get it out the oak. We need sherry finish for that. Like Jura. Lovely malt nonetheless. Everything else spot on. Great review you guys know your whisky.
Just about everyone that had a complaint about the Norlan said pretty much the same thing. They didn't like the thickness of the lip of the glass. Hopefully they'll take that into consideration if they make a version 2.0.
When will Rex actually rock the Snidely Whiplash curled mustache seen on the back bar mirror? Perhaps during a throwback 1900's gold rush White Dog challenge featuring BT White Dog, Jack Daniel's Unrested Rye and a couple of assorted other moonshines.
You guys fought over who got to say my name? Is that a compliment, or the start of a terrifying path towards a restraining order? Good to hear I wasn't the only one who felt that the Lagavulin 8 was a bit sweet.
Just bought a Dalmore 12 gift box that came with free glasses. They are the same glasses that Richard Paterson uses in his Dalmore videos. Have you guys ever tried them?
Loved another one. (BTW, cask strength Caol Ila and coffee rocks.) 957 subs and 48 comments. What happened to 68 and 5? It wasn't that long ago. Nicely done, I've probably watched a few. LOL
Holy shit. Caol Ila and Coffee. I just figured out what I'm drinking for the rest of this weekend. Yeah, we're blowing up! We'll after our 1,000th sub, we can finally buy those Porches we always wanted. And rex can finally afford a haircut.
The Canadian glass would have close to ties and ratio of fluid surface area to throat size as the Glencairn, h send ed the similar nose.bufthe larger fluid areasould vastly increase evaporation and oxidation, hence the difference on the palate
The little cups I made were the first hollow items I ever made on a torch. Therefore, there is zero chance that they were ever part of a bong. I've never made a bong. Besides, if you guys were current on your cannabis terminology, you'd know that the word bong is now fairly obsolete. Today, they use pipes and rigs. I've also never made any pipes or rigs although you'd never know it by the glass artists I follow on Instagram. Thanks for featuring my little Toad and Ostrich cups!
There is something I love about the 8 and I wish they made it all the times. I know tHey hAVe clASss, which I love yes, but I wish they could and bet they could beat out the other islay beauties on my shelf and many other shelves at the "entry level" and baseline tasty scotch that doesn't brake the bank. Er well completely break the bank
The reason I ordered it is because they had a bottle set up just out side the pisser. I just ordered what I had seen. The next day he was not to talkative with me. Great whiskey!
Funny story: I actually bought one of those Canadian glasses when I first started getting serious about whiskey. Coincidentally this was the same time I started watching whiskey vault. It was mis-labeled as a glencairn at the liquor store I got it from and I saw the word glencairn, and knew that was the whiskey vault official glass, so I bought it without a second thought. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that it wasn't actually a glencairn.
With all the whisky Rex gets to try on the show and the knowledge he picks up from Daniel, surely he must be close to a level one sommelier by now? Give that man a large obnoxious necklace as well.
I assure you, even the entry level somms know more than I do. Maybe if I paid attention in these shoots, but I'm always focused on the next mooching opportunity.
I've always wondered what the Norlan glasses were like. It always looked too big and bulky for me, personally, and I don't think I'd like the ergonomics either. Glad to hear I don't have to spend money on one now to find out I don't like it. On the other hand, I gotta get a Canadian Glencairn now. I've always passed on them thinking it couldn't possibly be any different that the standard. But you say different?
I agree! You should totally do that. Actually, Rex, I nominate you to personally compare every whiskey you review henceforth using the two Glencairns. Just tell Daniel he has to pour you an extra glass every time from now on. It's what the people want!
It's just an easy reference point. I like the small copper still style bulge in the lower half that allows some of the alcohol fumes to stay behind during smelling. Really they're both great and bring different aspects of the whisky forward.
Cool, thanks for the info. Keep up the great work guys. Also maybe review the Balvenie 21 year portwood or the Highland Park 18? Unless you already have. I'm torn on those 2 for my next bottle
I went to Whiskey On Ice in Minneapolis a while back, and the price of the ticket was worth it entirely because they give you a Glencairn glass. Yes, I know they're like $8 a piece. I don't care.
hahahaha. Yeah, I realized you would watch it. I just figured if anyone ever stumbles on this comment that's not you, it gives them a direct link for context.
Hi guys, I just started to drink whiskey and is being real cool to have you guys guiding the way... And by the way do you accept donations of other than whiskey? Perhaps a Tequila?? 🤔
One day I will get to Lagavulin, but the Islay are a little out of my reach. Still chilling with Highland and Speyside, And Lowland. Are there really any Islay for someone like me to wean into?
The two things I don't like about the Norlan: a) The fat lip, which feels like I'm drinking from a porcelain coffee mug. b) Too dainty and lightweight. I prefer a little heft in my whiskey glass.
Lovely watching the videos with the two of you to start off my work day. But, dang, Rex, why should you be nice to Daniel? I'm not. Love, Mom.
HAAAHHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We heard it directly from your mom, Daniel. I have the green light to crank things up to BRUTAL. Let the hobbit hunt, commence!!!!
I couldn't have planned this better if I did it myself.
I hear halfling tears are delicious.

If Lagavulin was the only brand of Whisky I could for the rest of my life, I would not be disappointed.
You are my people.
Jason Fisk agreed
Man I tried it (I am newer to whiskey) it was not for me. Maybe my pallet isn’t defined enough yet to enjoy it lol. It’ll go on the shelf for now.
So the Canadians even make glasses that are more polite? ;)
9:56 "Damn Canadians and their witchcraft!" (I actually got the canadian Gelncairn glasses because of this, and they really do make whiskey taste smoother somehow (for the not-so-smooth whiskies that is)) It's definitely witchcraft. Confirmed. 100%.
just bought a set of 4 Glencairn glasses because of that rabbit trail, you guys are wondrously expensive to watch hahaha!
Yeah, that seems to keep happening

6:08 "Tactile" is the word :)
Subscribed for sure I enjoy learning about whisky from y'all very much...thumbs up
5:26 the quicker evaporation is part of the idea. That's why the glass of a Glencairn is so thin. With more evaporation you get more fragrance.
I get the minty finish on this one, which is (in my perspective) a very clean, refreshing note - damn good stuff!
Canadian Glencairn is my favorite everyday drinking glass. Second is a 5.5oz brandy snifter. Great videos guys.
Just started watching this channel. You sir do some fantastic videos! Keep it up!
Thank you!
Just tried this and it’s my new favourite!

Lagavulin 8 is smoother and less smoky despite being such young peaty whisky. I still like the 16 but nonetheless 8 is nice dram.
It is!
Put water in it. Then the smoke really comes out and it's way smokier then the 16
Damn, even sweeter than the 16? I already found the 16 to be sweet. Can't wait to try the 8.
The glencairn is focussing the whisky on your tongue while the Canadian glass is allowing it to spread out more hence the smoothness.
I would agree with that glass analysis, except the Norlan has the same glass diameter at the opening and nowhere near the same effect. Too weird.
