Excellent review Ralfy. I think this is very enjoyable and a sensible price. Great information on the tube too. Balvenie are great when they bottle at a higher strength.

I just opened my bottle to toast the dog I recently had to put down. We had a wake of sorts. I really enjoy peated whiskey and I have been a Balvenie fan for years. I really enjoy this. My palate is not discriminate enough to separate all the flavors but this whiskey reminds me of Caol Ila, Laphroaig and the Balvenie double wood. I think it’s worth $100.

As for your last point that is very interesting - as I write now I'm munching on some bourbon biscuits and it actually doesn't taste so bad going to whisky after this - I'm totally getting an amaretti vibe. Plus there's the added intrigue of enjoying a 45p pack of biscuits with a £45 bottle of Yamazaki. Definitely recommend.

I had the same experience a few weeks ago. I was nibbling some rice cakes covered with dark chocolate. Had a dram of Glenfiddich 15 after and there was an odd metallic taste off it. Tried the whisky again the next day to check whether the bottle had been tainted somehow. It's just fine. Rice cakes and whisky do not mix.

Great review! I'd like to give this one a try.
On the topic of the palate, I must say I have experienced a similar situation. I had a bottle of Aberfeldy 21 yr on the shelf and went in for a taste. Immediately, I noticed and overpowering perfumed-floral taste and nose. It was almost soapy in character. I had previously tasted this whisky and loved it. What had happened? Eventually I realized that the meal I had previously eaten had a heavy dosage of onion, and that had totally distorted my sense of taste and smell. A day or two later I went back with a fresh palate and thoroughly enjoyed it. So yes, prior consumption can definitely affect the palate adversely.
Sorry for the length of the rant. Keep up the good work! I love watching videos from a true Scotsman and gentlemen from here in Tennessee.

I've had a similar experience. My first tastes of the Ralfy-recommended Old Pulteney 12 and Highland Park 12 had unpleasant celery-like vegetal streak. Now I really like HP12 and love OP12 and don't find that offending note. But I think it was my tasting them on the same night :)

That looks good stuff. Haven't tried a Balvenie yet so this one seems right up my street, as I like peat also. It sounds like one of those whiskies that you can have depending on your mood and is a bit of an all-rounder, as you can have a more peat-based experience neat, or a lovely balanced experience with water. Going to look this one out.
Speaking of those rice crackers, I too like them and got the chilli ones not long back, and if I remember correctly, I had them one night a few hours before having a Springbank 10, and it seemed one of those nights when I just wasn't enjoying it. I should become more aware of what I'm eating previously before I have a dram.

Nicely put Saltire. It's pitched at a reasonable price. Balvenie are a classy outfit and when they bottle at a higher strength it's the more so. Actually I only buy the higher strength ones. The 12 year single barrel first fill is a good one and a little cheaper. No peat but this is only lightly peated. Yeah, give it a go. Cheers

Aye I will do, I see one of their expressions available in Tesco's quite a bit and have often wondered what the profile of this whisky is. I'm only a couple of years into seriously looking out whiskies so still making my way through the standard ranges and bottlings, so haven't quite gotten round to Balvenie; but I do look forward to getting a few bottles eventually! :D

Just scored a dusty bottle of the 2003 Vintage version of this for $99 at a local liquor store. I have a bottle of the 2002 vintage, the year it started. Been saving it. I'll open them both and compare. Nowadays Lagavulin 16 costs $99 in many places, but I've refused to buy it even when it was $80, even though I like it. I just feel I'm getting a more unique bottle here. I do have some Lag stashed, but might not get to buy it again with the way prices are going. Diageo can pound sand.

Though not too many thanks coming from them side my guess.
    another great and educated review.
    M mention Balvenie Peated
    Triple Cask 14 years 48.3 % ABV.
My,the Balvenie distillery don't frost on their yeasts.
I'm very curious how this Triple Cask expression on the
    Peated stock will translate.
Maybe add a different alternative or refreshing sip to the like of Highland park 12/18 or Lagavulin 16.

@ralfydotcom I was wondering if you might know why Balvenie 15 single barrely sherry is auctioning so high as of late. There is an abundance in my region, but I have noticed on scotchwhiskyauctions.com, the most recent bids are getting quite high. If I were to go buy some bottles at the store, I would profit quite substantially. That is assuming they all sold at similar prices, and does not factor in shipping costs. Are just particular casks going for higher amounts? I have found no forums about the reasoning for the auction prices being so high lately.

@ralphy Very nice ending. I have a “straight” regime (no processed/industrial foods, no sugar except fructose, no gluten, no lactose) and am a peat head (also like some bourbons and Irish as starters). It seems that people who find that peat stinks are keen on eating frequently what I would politely call shit. Shit like those Teryaki crackers for example 😅 Btw I have “The week of peat” from Balvenie to uncork but the wee beastie has to be killed before. Cheers from 🇨🇭 to all Mötörpeated steampunk maltmates !

I just got one and enjoying it very much. I sure doesn't feel like 48.3% ABV and water seems to kill it for me. I was looking at the chart on the canister. I wonder why they didn't do a Peat Week in 2007 and did they stop doing it after 2014?

    • @alexk3088

I know it's a year later and I fully realize that some people just prefer sipping at higher abv... But every time I hear someone say that water ruins their dram I can't help but wonder if the water quality needs to be addressed? Is your water softener working? Is the water fresh? Is it filtered to remove chlorine? If you have a water dispenser in your fridge, is the system clean? Etc. Aside from chlorine and mineral content (softness), water also has dissolved oxygen, which helps open up the dram. Bottled water may not have as much oxygen. And so on and so forth 😎

Sehraj Singh Virk Singleton is a brand owned by Diageo. Diageo took several little-know distillery's single malts, repackaged them under an up-market collection, and released them, at first, as region exclusive, but later, globally. I hope that helps.

Hi Ralfy -- slightly off topic, but I'm having an issue with my balvenie 12, which I've been drinking for a few years now. It doesn't taste right lately. Do you know of any issues with production? I've put 'what's wrong with my Balvenie?' into the google, but to no avail. I've noticed it with Talisker 10, too. Are my tastes changing? Would love some help. Greetings from Georgia, USA

Funny I opened my latest Talisker 10 after not having it in a couple of years, and it isn't really doing it for me now. I don't know if its because I have a more experienced palate than when I had it last, or it has indeed changed over the last few years.

    • @jeverhart6890
      @jeverhart6890 6 років тому +1

Ralfy has touched on inconsistency with Talisker recently. It was the most recent Talisker Distillers Edition review I believe where he addressed it. It's possible that Balvenie had a poor run of double wood but I'd set the bottle aside for awhile and come back to it in a few weeks or a month and see how you like it.

    Hey Ralfy,
would it be at all possible to review the Balvenie Double Wood 17?
I have been hearing for long time that it is an excellent whisky but I am somehow sceptical, since it is chill-filtered, coloured and expensive.

    • @T0bi1983

T0bi1983: Thank you for your reply. What sorts of whiskys do you like?
I am also skeptical due to the price and obvious flaws, but there are so many exceptionally good reviews on the net about this one that I was wondering whether it is worth it. Ralfy did review the younger brother and was not impressed so I was wondering whether 3% abv and 5 more years could cut it.

    • @T0bi1983

I like all sorts of Whisky, but especially peated ones or characterful malts like Springbank. Balvenie tastes too soft and elegant for me. But a friend of mine likes the 17year old very much (still not buying it at the moment because of the price). So a lot of opinions...;) Do you maybe have the chance to get hold of a sample first? Then you can decide for yourself, if this Whisky would be worth a bottle.

    • @riancreamer6904

If you're in the UK sainsbury's are doing a 50cl miniature set of the 12 (@43%), Caribbean Cask and the 17 for £15.
The 17 was the best but it didn't do enough for me to want to buy a full bottle at that price. I think if you like Speyside, softer, honeyed, fruity types you'd probably get a lot out of it.
I'd go for the 12 yo single barrel offering from them.

    • @xrept
      @xrept 6 років тому

Thanks for your opinions guys. I know about the soft character of Balvenie, that's why I asked about your whisky preference. Anyhow, I cannot really buy official samples from Balvenie here in Germany. They seem to be out of stock. I might look around on ebay for unofficial samples :)

What's going on, Ralfy? You didn't announce the malt mark, your mark was unreadable, and you didn't hold up that ratty old MALT card. Getting forgetful in your old age?

I don't think I qualify as an anorak, maybe a geek, an enthusiast (with much yet to learn). As such, I have precisely a mathematical zero that I want to hear from "brand ambassadors". Information should go on the label and/or website. Everything else is hearsay. Now, if an actual distillery worker was talking, someone involved in production, that'd be different. Grumpy, I know, but we're spending good money.

@@ralfydotcom thank you, Ralfy. I've actually looked up the word anorak the first time I heard you say it. I suppose it's not too different from a geek. Certainly not self-aggrandizing to call oneself an anorak :)
