90% of the problem starts and ends at the dealer. A good dealer KNOWS and will push the right buttons and puts the right words to get a new engine. Most dealerships just don't want to do that.

Thank you for your video. While returning home yesterday in our 2013 Hyundai Sonata on a major Interstate Hwy. with heavy traffic moving very fast, I pulled out to pass a slower vehicle and all of the lights on my dashboard came on, no power and my car had to coast to the shoulder of this major and very busy hwy. We waited for over two hrs. for Hyundai hwy. assistance to arrive and tow the car to the nearest Hyundai dealership. This was a Sat. afternoon, and the relative who picked us up took us to the dealership. We borrowed a car from a relative to get us home, a two hour trip home, and we won't know anything until Monday when we have to return to the car to the relative and go speak with the service mgr. at this dealership. We only have 84,000 miles on the car, which we purchased new. We now know this blown engine issue is a major Hyundai problem, but we shouldn't have to pay for a rental car while we wait for the new engine to be installed. I suppose we will get "the rest of the story" on Monday. Your video was educational for me and a big help in dealing with the Service Mgr. on Monday.

Hyundai services(in Virginia) or any state do offer free recall repair for engine knocking regardless how old the car for Sonata even over 100k-150k. You might one to give it a call again. I have to check with Carmax first since still in 30 days windows return policy before bring in to the dealer to get the recall related to the engine done.

Thanks for your video. I was your previous one and my 2012 Sonata engine is making the exact noise! It has 210,000 miles on it. The engine was replaced back in 2015 when it had 90,000 miles. Just recently at 205,000 miles, the alternator went out and had to be replaced. That cost me quite a bit to repair. It’s now 11 years old. I’m hoping Hyundai can replace the engine again as other posts have mentioned. If not, I need to get rid of my Sonata. Overall it was a good and decent vehicle that took me a lot of places. But lately I feel unsafe to drive it.

I am starting the process here in Guelph, Ontario as well. This is 2016 Kia Soul, same engine. P1326 and this one has only 80,000km (roughly 60,000 miles) on it. The car always had its maintenance on time and at certified dealers or shops here in town. We towed it to the dealer immediately. We have all maintenance records and it did have the software update. There is no way in hell we will pay for the engine replacement. There is a large class action lawsuit in the USA for the recall. I would seek advice of a lawyer, and I will do so too. The first thing the mechanic asked is: Where are you getting the fuel for the car? Well the last time we filled up was at Costco - yes it is the Costco fuel was immediately his response. Of course my daughter has nothing to combat with and it took me quite the time to find all the information. By the way, there is no repair for this failure, the replacement engine will still have the same flaw.

I had the car towed directly to the dealer. since the rod punched a hole in the block a diagnostic was useless. I let the dealer handle all the paper work with corpotate. 2 days later hyundai approved a new motor. The only thing I paid for was the tow. They gave me a brand new Tucson for 3 months. I'm so sorry for your troubles. Like you, I too am not a mechanic, some of the technical things you mentioned are way above my head. But I do have a good sense of observation, and it seems to me that after 2012 or so hyundai started having problems and whether it be engine or problems with something else numerous recalls were issued. In my case I have an older 2007 sonata with a 2.4 liter engine. I am the 3rd owner. Fortunately the 1st 2 owners kept good care of it and i have been continuing the tradition with regular oil changes. Now at just over 157,000 miles it, to me at least runs like new. there is no hint of burning oil or an exhaust leak and unless you plant your ear on the hood you cant even hear it run, it's that quiet and I got it for a scant $1700. I just replaced the roaters which were original. perhaps hyundai should go back to what they were doing pre 2012 then there would be no problems

Came across this video when trying to find info on our Hyundai. Over 100 miles out of town, our 2019 Hyundai 2.0 Tucson completely blew it's engine. This vehicle was well taken care of and only has 62,000 miles on it. We bought this Tucson used so we have no warranty on it. I sure wish we did. Between the tow to the garage and the repair, it cost us $6014 to replace an engine with hardly any miles on it! This happened out of town as i mentioned and on a holiday weekend, Memorial Day, just recently. We couldn't tow it to a Hyundai dealer because there wasn't one around, nor would we just leave our car sitting at the dealership with no to talk to about it. While sitting on the side of the road trying to figure out what to do, a State Trooper pulled up and recommend a local garage that he uses personally and for the police vehicles. Since we felt we had little choice, we had it towed there. The mechanic working on the engine basically said this is a classic Hyundai engine issue. Now what really sucks is ours is a 2.0, but the 2.4 liter is on recall. It's the same problem! We trusted Hyundai vehicles and now I don't. How can you tell a customer who owns one of your vehicles, with only 62,000 miles on it that there's nothing they can do?! Especially because we have no warranty and we didn't bing it to a Hyundai dealer! We did absolutely NOTHING wrong to this car. It got oil changes when needed, we did all the maintenance to keep it running great! Like it did before the engine blew! We had NO idea this was going to happen. The warning lights came on as the oil wasn't getting to the engine and caused it to crap out! Other than that, NOTHING! We barely got it to the side of the road not to get hit! So one tow, my kid having to drive over 100 miles to get us, not having my car and needed rides to work, driving back over 100 miles to get the Tucson, and a $6014 repair bill later, we are told nothing can be done! Please, if anyone reading this has any suggestions, let me know. We've written to Hyundai, sent them the invoice for the work done and hope to get somewhere. On the phone, they said nothing can be done. Only for 2.4 liter engines right now. Such BS.

Bought our 2011 in 2014 ( Fleet owned- 20K miles on it), registered it with Hyundai; got all recall notices done especially the anti knock problem, which the dealership said it passed, ran very well until 2019 when the turbo went, that cost me only 300$ as I bought extended warranty when I bought the car, 2 months later the engine went and the turbo for a second time.
Long story short; my dealership's service manager was able to get everything done at Hyundai's expense, new turbo, new or rebuilt engine and they updated the antiknock software where if I read it correctly, as long as I follow maintenance schedule engine is warranted for life.

I have a 2016 Sonata with a 2.4. Noticed at 70,000 km it was using 1 liter every 3,700 km,( from full to add mark) Took it to the dealer and told this was considered acceptable . Phoned Hyundai Canada and was told the same thing. Fast forward to 108,000 km and engine went into limp mode. My dealer would do nothing for me, told me it was past my warranty. Took it to another dealer and they put a new long block in for me. I was fortunate to have found the other dealer. Why does Hyundai as a company treat their customers this way? Seems to me dealerships have the option of making that decision to swap an engine or not. I would try another dealership personally if that's an option. It worked for me. Please give us an update to see if anything has been resolved.

I owned a 2011 Sonata 2.0t. I put 120k highway miles on it in 5 years. No issues until an oil cooler hose blew and started to hear some strange engine knock around the same time. The oil light never came on until there was less than a quart of oil when the oil cooler line burst. I’m a car guy and immediately stopped driving. Filled it up with oil and took immediately to dealership down the road. My experience at the dealer was so poor that I immediately sold the car within a few weeks. They even tried to sell me a new car during the process (how kind of them). That experience lead me to realizing how problematic these new engines had become I took the financial hit and sold it privately. Now we’re a Toyota family. Every brand has issues but my local Toyota dealership will go the distance to do the right thing even if it’s out of warranty. I had an oil line burst on my 2011 Sienna with 145k miles and my Toyota dealership handled it EXTREMELY different than Hyundai. It speaks volumes about how important dealership experiences actually are when you experience major failures. And I’ve know several Kia owners who had new engines installed under 100k miles, typically under warranty though. The experience for each of them was poor to say the least. I can’t recommend Hyundai or Kia to anyone as they simply aren’t worth the trouble. The resale value is terrible simply because these are not vehicles that can go 200k miles without major failures. They’re failing regularly under 100k miles. Toyota’s and honda routinely do 200k or more easily so of course they cost more used. You’ll save a lot in the long run though buying a Toyota or Honda. Sad but true.

Are there any updates? My car just blew up last night, it only has 95K miles and should still be under warranty and has also never been fixed for recalls. Up until it blew up last night it has never had any mechanical issues in the 5 years I've owned it. But they are saying because my husband did the oil changes himself, the warranty isn't valid and they don't even care about the recalls on the engine. We changed the oil and filters at least twice a year, and kept up with everything. New battery, new spark plugs, new tires, new wipers, new air and oil filters, all done at least every 5K miles or as the book suggests. Now we're getting punished because we change our own oil? I did have it done in a shop in September and they did a tune up and the receipt shows that there were no issues found at that time. They did an oil change and the oil was clean. I never had any issues with it eating oil or smoking, no knocking sounds (till last night) no dash lights on (till last night), etc.. And we still owe a year and a half at $350 a month on payments.

It took exactly 6 days to get my car back with a new motor. They also fixed a few other problems I had for free (like the back defroster not working, and the clicking sound in my steering wheel). If you get the run around from one dealer, call another one. They have several open lawsuits right now against them, and its cheaper for them to just fix the car when you bring it in than risk anymore lawsuits. Went to a chat room only to find out that the battery issue is huge and the dealers told me what they told everyone else, (you don’t drive it enough) I only had 72,800 miles on it and had so much frustration over this, I can’t rely on it! Decided to call around my local dealers and see if they wanted it, yes they did and gave me back $12,000 for it, three days later they sold it for $17,500.00! I’m glad I sold it at a dealership, not my problem! It was a great car when the battery worked. Bye the way, I serviced my car last month a Hyundai dealership and had all of the recalls done. I received a letter and card for owners Manuel. They extended my engine warranty to 15 years or 150,000 miles, so the new owner won’t have to worry about it. Glad they came through for that but,the battery issue is rampant!

The engine on my 2014 Sonata failed in south western VA 5 weeks ago(I live in NJ 450 miles away). Had the car towed 52 miles to the nearest Hyundai dealer where they tested the engine and told me I needed a replacement and then told me that Hyundai had approved it. Hyundai will reimburse me for a rental and bring my car to my dealer in NJ. The dealer in VA couldn't have been more helpful. I called the Hyundai Consumer Assistance Center and was assigned a case number and was contacted by a case manager in 2 days and he asked me to call when the engine has been replaced and he would arrange to have the car transported to NJ. From reading other comments here I feel fortunate that I haven't been given a run around.

the engine on my 2015 Sorento (2.4L 109,100 miles) is being replaced under the recall. Same crazy knocking sound, flashing check engine light, and nothing above 1800rpm. The process at the dealer is they have KIA engineers on the phone at the time they go through the checks and confirm the claim. I guess I am one of the very, very, very few lucky ones. I bought a brand new 2013 Sonata GLS in August of 2012. I knew Hyundai and Kia have a history of engine problems. But I decided to take a chance because of their new GDI engines. After my purchase, I went to the dealership to have them changed the steering mode to "sport" so the steering would be stiffer and firmer, so it won't be so "loose" and kinda wandering at high speed. The service tech then advised me that it is a MUST, that I change the oil at 300 miles, then change the oil again at 3k miles. He explained to me about metal shavings in new car / engine. My Sonata is now almost 230k miles and I never had a single issue with the engine and i have been changing the oil by myself at home. I have to do carbon deposit cleaning at every 15k miles (with CRC cleaning product), which is extremely easy and each bottle costs about $13. I guess I am really lucky and my Sonata is still going strong. as far a gas mpg, I would get about 35 on the freeway and 25 in the city, averaging out at about 29/30 mpg overall.

So I've driven it for about 3months, now engine is knocking.

Some Kia vehicles with the 2.0L & 2.4L engine suffer from a defect that can cause engine seizure, stalling, engine failure, and engine fire, that engine seizure or stalling can be dangerous if experienced, and that some owners and lessees have been improperly denied repairs under the vehicle’s warranty. @@FaithandNova tell me what American made car is better, I owned a Chevy Traverse that needed new timing chains that cost over$4000. Ford in cars is garbage and don't even think for one minute that Dodge has anything that's worth buying. It may be true that Toyota and Honda have the best product anywhere
