2012 Kia Soul base model, 1.6 L automatic with 239, 560 miles on the clock as of today. The key is oil changes every three to four thousand miles. It burn about 1/4 of a quart between oil changes. Oh, never cleaned the valves on this direct injection engine. Still runs like a Swiss watch. The only item that needed replacement was the alternator. All other items were maintenance items. The trans is service every 30,000 miles and the cooling system flushed every two years. The front pads and rotors replaced at about every 30/35 thousand miles and the rears at 50 thousand.

If you were conscientious enough to follow recommended maintenance intervals (or better), this video shows why you still would be doomed to failure ultimately based on the skimpy design and, in particular, when combined with the GDI carbon build up liability. So, yeah, even if you know what you are doing maintenance-wise with cars, you still would be a “typical” Kia owner for buying one of these in the first place.

Very interesting seeing an engine dismantled. Great video.
I have a Kia Sportage SUV 2017 2.0 litre diesel and have had no trouble at all with it. It's travelled 92,000 km and I'm selling it and buying another Kia Sportage 2.0 litre diesel, but this time, I'm getting the top of the range model.
My wife and I love this car. I was attracted to the fact that it has a full-sized spare (a deal breaker for me) and that it comes with a 7 year warranty.
I'm selling it with 2 years of the factory warranty still remaining.
I'm very impressed with the tyres and brakes that comes with the Kia Sportage.
I just put on 4 new tyres today, the first tyre change in 92,000 km! All my previous tyres on other vehicles only lasted 62,000 km!
I've never had to replace the brake pads. The mechanic told me that there's still plenty of brake pads left. I've never had a vehicle in the past that's lasted >92,000 km without a brake pad change (my wife's a nervous driver so she's always on the brakes).

That's the thing though, I was taught this information by the males in my family who work on cars and had jobs as parts managers in dealerships. I had this engine in my 2014 KIA Rio 6spd and I wasn’t impressed. Totally reliable but I could barely get 30mpg with a light foot and the engine required premium gas during the summer because the AC load would make the engine ping like it ingested marbles! The 2 liter port injected engine in my 2022 Forte is smoother, quieter and achieves 40 combined mpg without even trying.

The rings are pretty much shot as are the cylinder walls (as evidenced by cylinder wall scoring and a decent amount of piston slap when the engine is cold.) One whole bottle of Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer is added every oil change and that helps slow the oil burn rate a bit (1 quart oil loss after ~500-600 mi).

now...I AM an average Kia owner, '23 Soul with mpfi 2.0, and I do check my oil...every 2-3 weeks! I currently have 9.7k miles and am approaching my 2nd oil change...dealer urges a 5k mile OCI using expensive full synthetic 0w-20 oil which is under utilized for such a short OCI
    I can understand why owners push extended OCI's on these...when you spec full synthetic 0w-20 full synthetic and urge 5,000 mile oil changes, people get upset when charged $75-100+ per oil change! 5,000 mile rated oil falls in the category of 'conventional' or 'synthetic blend' and the oil changes usually cost less;
spec full synthetic oil and urge OCI's for 5k miles is a waste of money & resources...full synthetic oil is formulated for higher mileage OCI's; 7k miles is still low, but better than 5k miles! even Subaru's 6k OCI is low for the capability of the oil!
respec the engine for 5w-20 conventional or synthetic blend & 5k mile OCI's are justified!

Our service requirements are 10,000km for the turbo petrol engines and 15,000km for the NA petrol and Diesel. Most of our KIA and Hyundai models are Korean made with some European produced. I have noticed there is a distinct quality difference with the US built Toyota Highlander or Kluger as it is called here compared to the Japanese made Rav 4 and wonder if the Hyundai models built in the US are using inferior quilt materials.

But Kia and Hyundai primary market is in asia and Europe . They get the cars from either European plant or Korean and the cars are some of the most reliable in the word. The problem is only in USA their plant and engine type is different from the rest of the world but it’s not with everyone most people in the states are satisfied with the brands.

It'd be neat if you got your hands on the older 2.0L beta (2) engine. I recently did some compression tests and aside from small things like hardened spark plug gaskets it still roars w/ 220k miles. It's also one of their loudest engines despite only 138hp and a 6.5k redline. The GDI engines from 2010s really weren't the play from hyundai/kia, getting better tho (i hope)

I definitely agree. My 2007 Tiburon has the 2.0L Beta 2 with 190k miles on it. As I mentioned in my previous post it still purrs.
Although the old 2.0 Beta lacks certain refinement, it's still a strong motor if well cared for. It's also relatively easily to maintain and care for, just make sure that you always keep an eye on the timing belt when service is due.
When paired with a manual transmission I can easily bark my tires on the first 3 gears in my Tiburon.

Thanks for this review of an all-Korean design. It appears that the execution is high quality, but the design doesn't tolerate edge-cases(neglect, abuse, environment). Curious how GM's newer Korean division (Malibu, Cruze, Spark2016+) compares to Hyundai/Kia.

@@speedkar99 For the KIA, I would use the best oil and premium Mobil 1 oil filter to compensate for unreliability of KIA engines, such as Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, or Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Royal Purple, and for carbon build up I would use BG 109 Engine Performance Restoration engine flush to remove sludge build up and free up clogged up oil piston rings and check oil weekly to top up oil and make sure oil is at 2nd hole on dip stick at all times and use only Shell gas which is higher quality and a little bit of Shell V-Power on every fill up, do you think that would make the KIA engine last a long time? Thanks for step by step breakdown of the KIA engine, it's amazing what it takes to have an engine that’s supposed to operate properly and the manufacturer use inferior parts and bad design, but it probably is the same with GM and Ford and Ram engines that build engines with inferior parts
