  • In this video I talk about how the motor seized up on my 2014 Kia Forte5 EX.
I bought it as a certified pre-owned, and the warranty refused to cover the repairs.
Eventually Kia made it right and gave me a new motor.
I still don't know why exactly my motor failed though.
    Thanks for watching!

I am a KIA master tech and they have had engine issues foe the last 10 years or so > If anyone has an issue with getting it repaired under 100.000 miles call the consumer affairs at KIA . 90% or better rate they will repair it especially if you say they will hear from your lawyer . They know they have issues with every engine they make ! Good Luck and God Bless !

They probably lied about the vehicle being low on oil. You said you never had any issues with low oil levels when you changed the oil, you did not notice any burning oil. Glad Kia went good for the repairs for you. Maybe a good time to sell it and buy a Toyota or Honda?

I'm experiencing this right now. And yes Fidelity is the warranty company I'm actually awaiting a decision on whether or not they're going to fix my car. Yes I too was burning oil and knew it and reported it to Kia on many occasions where they told me that it was normal for this model car that I have. I knew that was bullshit but I kept the service up on time and I also kept checking to make sure my oil levels were okay and when my car finally failed I took it in. Kia has had my car now for 2 weeks still awaiting a decision.

Yeah...same thing happened to me. I was told it was the GDI system that Hyundai and Kia cars used to crank up better fuel millage. It causes the build up of debris because the direct injection bypasses some of the conventional fuel intake systems. Thats why they "burn" oil so heavily. My warranty company denied me also. I guess its because they knew Kia had the class action and would replace it.

John, it used to be that people checked the oil every time they purchased gas. With the advent of self serve gas people have slowly gotten out of the habit. This is unfortunate because oil is a consumable and the life blood of your engine. The problem is made worse by a marketing lie promulgated by the automotive industry - the extended interval oil change. Every 3,000 miles is ideal, and 5,000 miles should be your absolute max. If you don't change it that often your wheels will "fall off" a lot sooner. Kia/Hyundai has a problem with oil consumption on their engines. You were very lucky that you got your repair covered, not everyone has. Frankly, I think the third party warranty folks had a good case for not paying because you drove without oil unless there was some indication of catastrophic sudden oil loss. But I suspect you benefitted from some of the legal pressure on Kia about the known problems with their engines. Glad you got a good resolution and I highly recommend that you develop a habit of checking the oil every time you buy gas. It will take you 3-5 minutes but if you do that and change oil at a realistic interval instead of a marketing hype interval you will find that your cars last like mine do - 400,000 to 600,000 miles. My oldest is 25 years old and my newest is 5. Take care of them and they will take care of you and your family.

After 12 years and 100k miles, besides regular routine fuel and maintenance costs, I have come out of pocket for (less than $2,500) 3 car batteries, four sets of windshield wipers, and just recently CV boots and head gasket and serpentine belt. The old car has developed some squeaks and rattles, but it has been inexpensive and reliable and I'm glad I bought it. I also own a 2017 Kia Soul+ with no issues. Both have had the engine-knock software recall update.

Disagree. We always buy new, after doing research on the cars we are considering. We always maintain them under the "severe" use schedule, so oil changes every 5,000 miles (never 10,000). We check the oil level once a week, it's so easy takes 3 minutes. While the hood is up look at all of the fluid levels. We keep our cars for over 10 years. Just sold my wife's 13 year old car for $5k and put that money down on a new Mazda.

I have been looking into this since I have a KIA RIO 1.6 Liter Engine.. From what I understand,, Oil does not Circulate through that Engine well at all for a Number of reasons.. There is a Really good Video as to why called ( Why KIA Engines Fail ) The Mechanic Breaks an Engine down and Explains it in Detail... There are 2 Things a Person should look into as the Cause... One is a $15 Dollar the PCV Valve Sticking Causing it to Burn Oil Very Quickly,,, and Beside the Oil Pump Being Inadequate,,,, the Other is the OIL Itself... These Cars Need Synthetic Oils,, and Not just any Oil,,, but more Specifically API/SP + GF-6A or B,, Depending on the Year...Plus You will need to find a way to keep Your Fuel system and Valves Clean...Just adding Fuel Cleaner to Your Gas is not going to do... You need something to go into the Air Intake or a Vacuum Line to get at the back of those Valves... In 2017 when I bought my Kia,,, They didnt really have the Right Oils for these Direct Injected engines in the First Place.. In My Opinion,,, KIA Scarified those Engines in Order to meet Emissions Standards... Tiny Oil Pump,,, The PCV Valve is Easy to Replace,,, and for $15 Dollars I would Replace it every 2 or 3 Years.. I would Spend the Extra Money On Proper Oil as it is Way Cheaper than Replacing the Engine,,, and because these Engines Carbon up.. For $18 Dollars it Probably would not Hurt to Clan those Valves Once a Year.. Watch the Last 2 Minutes of this Video if You want to know why Kia Engines Fail... ua-cam.com/video/0n3jim7ylTA/v-deo.html

When that happens the oil has no where to go but up into the combustion chamber causing oil consumption. 3K oil changes plus a annual engine flush can mitigate the problem along with high octane gas since those engine are 10:5:1 to 11.3.1 compression WTF people run 87 octane with those specs is a good question.

Problem is Toyota and Hondas don't cost a little extra. The dealer markup on even used Toyotas and Hondas are outright ridiculous. They shouldn't cost as much as a newer model used Corvette and yet they do. It's very easy to see why people don't spring for Honda and Toyota given the price difference. An old used Rav4 with over 100K miles in the northeast states can still cost close to $25,000 grand. That's just ridiculous for a used car with that much mileage. And a brand new Rav4 is closer to $35 -$40K after dealer markup. Most people don't have that to throw away on a car.

There is likely a recall or a class action on Kia in your area. So many engine issues that it is difficult to even find another engine unless its used and then the same issue may exist.. Bottom line...Try TOYOTA.. And always look at the reliability of a make & model over several years before u buy....
