Making the enclosure smaller for a typical car audio 6.5 driver designed to run free-air isn't going to do it any favors. Good job pointing this out to those on the fence.

Definitely! I’m literally editing that video right now! I had already done a decent job, but the same day I tried the boom mats, I decided to hit em up again and do 100% with the deadening on the doors and door panels, and just about the same with close cell foam. Much better!

These are made to reduce or remove resonance from having so much open space behind the driver. Thus reducing mid-bass. They work well to improve lower range vocals, those tend to get lost behind the baffle of the door. Think about it, you are shrinking the box tremendously which brings fs way up as well. You'd have noticed the difference playing some nice vocal tracks.
So yes, these were not meant to accomplish what you need. You need help in a lower frequency band.
I am also a deaf bonce dealer so I am curious how you like the new drivers.
Yea I didn’t expect much out of them, more so just wanted to disprove their Amazon claims lol.
And so far I really like them! (I’ve had em installed for a while now and am just kinda slow to getting to the edits).
They’re still not particularly great in the lower mid frequencies, but I expected that and already have something to address it (being a DB dealer you can probably take a guess).
But for the vocal range and even some of the higher stuff get nice n loud and still maintain clarity really well.
I’m very happy with them and will likely look at DB again in the future.

I suggest putting a 1 square inch opening in the down facing surface of the baffles. This allows airflow in and out of the "box" created by the baffle. I find this improves the bass / mid-bass coming from the speaker.
That’s been a surprisingly common suggestion (that I never even considered). And while it might work, it’s not even worth it for my purposes tbh. Plus, the baffles would never fit around the new speakers anyway.
I’ll be installing midbass speakers pretty soon in their own enclosure.

They really are! Side by side to the older Pioneers I had, there is no comparison!
I used them on 4 6x8's and they sounded great. Got a new car that has 4 6.5's and didn't get the same results. I think the fact that the 6x8's had a larger inside volume helped a lot. The 6.5's are smaller and stiffer because of that. They sound terrible when you turn it up past 1/3 volume.
That's cool you at least got to experience SOME kind of benefit from them.

I use those with my speakers and they sound awesome in my truck, o use some sound deadening, fast rings and boom mats to keep the sound from escaping into my door and keep all the sound inside.

What I did was cut the back of the bottom half off which made a big difference. Still water proof from the top and has the airspace underneath
That’s been a pretty common suggestion that I wasn’t really expecting, but it would definitely be interesting to test that to see what results I get.
I just decided not to run them. I wasn’t committed to them, and they don’t even fit the new speakers, so they’re just spare at this point.

I just found (and subscribed to) your channel today! I'm about to do some binge watching to get caught up... Years ago I had an 85 Mercury Cougar (with the 5.0L 😎). The stock speakers in the rear dash were 5x7s. There were factory baffles behind them made of really stiff cardboard type material and lined on the inside with standard vehicle insulation mats. They were about the same size as the Boom mats. I was amazed at how much bass that car had! My friends thought I had a small sub in the trunk. I tried removing them thinking they would be louder because of the trunk, but put them back in. There was definitely more bass with the baffles in place.... I did eventually put a single 12" MTX Eliminator (mid 1990s) back there and built a custom box to fit the trunk. But I left the stock speakers in place.

You right.... some applications they work for but mainly they are used for weather proofing & rear trunk mount to keep bass from distorting 6x9s 6.5s etc.
Yea as far as the acoustic benefits in the door, basically none. But that’s why we try!

Hey, those Deaf Bonce Arnold's are bigger than the rest of the 6.5s hole sizes. You may have to trim more hole than normal!
I did! I had to shave a good lil amount out of my MDF adapters. Luckily the metal didn't need to be cut any bigger.

They do pretty good! I had to actually adjust the gain down a lil bit when I first installed them because they were starting to overpower the sub!
I don't know if you heard at the last meet, but that was the first time I had done any kind of distance test on them and they did a lot better than I was expecting.

It worked for me. Got rid of that megaphone 📣 in a 🪣 sound. And gave.the midbass more definition. I definitely didn't increase the bass, but is certainly an improvement.
Really? That’s awesome! I feel like I didn’t have that particular sound UNTIL the baffles (although only in the midbass frequencies).

I never understood why they would claim that baffles provide more mid-bass. Maybe if you're getting too much deep bass and you don't like it. A baffle will lessen the airspace for your speaker. This causes substantially less bass. I you want more mid-bass, sound deaden your door. Put it all over inside of the outer door skin and all over the door skin where the door panel goes. Basically, you will build your door into a speaker box. You don't need the sound deadening material to do this.
Yea that always sounded like some marketing bs to me, so I had to find out for science lol. And yea that’s exactly what I did (literally same day as this video was shot). The doors and panels already had about 50% coverage, so I went ahead and finished the job.

@@DaBadNewz LOL... I try to be more clear about it. I have had people actually put the material on the actually plastic door panel. Also, check the air space requirement for that new speaker to make sure your door offers enough airspace.
The plastic panels in this car definitely benefit from a lil weight. They like to resonate.
But yea measuring the airspace would help me dial it in a lot better.

I have seen a noticeable difference when mids are in a proper enclosure but i agree foam isn't the best solution. Those DB mids are beasts... don't think that booty would even fiit in the "speaker baffle" thing lol. Glad to see you're back, looking forward to the door speaker installation video. Good times.

I've just finished soundeadeing my Fpace SVR and bought a nuce set of focal for my mid 6.5. The guy gave me this exact same foam baffle. I think I'll pass on installing as the outset door doesn't see any weather elments. The comment section here was also helpful. Thanks.

Super funny thing is it’s 521 am and that is exactly what I was going to work on today because it is Saturday. My mid base is very lacking. I have some of these and was going to install guess we’ll see how they sound. I had headphones on to listen to your video and I’m going to throw this out there. I did not have high hopes for this, thanks for the awesome video and keeping us informed
Yea me either. It really was one of those things where curiosity got the best of me even though I was pretty sure they wouldn't quite do it.

If it’s worth mentioning, I was gonna get those but I went with the Recoil rubber open back baffles. I did it bcs I also was curious but mostly bcs I’m
Building a 98 Integra and older cars don’t seal as well 30 years later. Ironically after installing my gear, I had rain and a few water drops landed on the baffle and it saved the speaker.
I didn’t try a before and after bcs I been messing with audio long enough to tell what the changes would be. The recoil also have a
“Sound projection” design that aims the sound to you instead of spreading out. That most definitely has a big impact because I held the speaker in my hand with and without the recoil baffle and it was a no brainer night & day difference.
Call me Puerto Rican 😝 but it motivated me enough to sound deaden my front doors with sheets of rubber foam that I been saving from Amazon packages. How good does it work?… the proof was there when I shut the car doors.. sounded and felt solid and quiet, totally not like a 30 yr old car lol.
Oh I believe it!! My homie has a Mazda 3 and that dude has stuffed every type of foam/fabric/old shirts n blankets/etc in his shit…but you can’t tell me it doesn’t sound like a Maybach when he closes the door. Complete silence!
And I believe you about the Recoils too, the designs that direct the sound seem like a much more likely option. And I bet the rubber helps too since it’s a bit more solid. AND they saved your speakers? That’s a win!

I used a different brand that looked a little thicker and deeper than yours (could be wrong) on a set of kappa 63ix's. they produce a decent bit of midbass and a little bit of bass but it sounded uncontrolled and would rattle the doors a little bit at higher volumes, so i decided to go with those and it seemed to tighten up the midbass and reduce the overall bass of the speaker as a whole but also removed the rattle sound i was hearing from the door, now i should have just sound deadened the doors and that would have probably allowed for more bass and overall output of the speakers but i was still pleased with the outcome, we have a little 10inch sub in the car that takes care of the bass and even a little bit of midbass anyways. its my brothers car he doesn't like his music loud just wants a decent sound quality and i feel for the average person and depending on application like you stated these are the answer.
Yea I definitely think the money is better spent on some sound deadening, especially if the car is particularly noisy from the factory (like my xB). That does a lot more for the overall sound quality than a foam baffle ever could.

I've had a few of those for at least 2 years and never put them in. Seeing what they actually do, I'd hit it wit some flex seal and stiffen it up a bit.
Yea a lot of people have suggested stiffening them up, but honestly, unless you just want the weather protection, I don’t really think it’s worth the trouble. They don’t even fit the speakers I got now

Try cutting off about half of the back. Enough to still protect the speaker but also let the bass out.
I might do that to give then a chance in the future, but with the new speakers, they don’t even almost fit, so they’re just on the shelf now.

Are those pretty decent? I was looking at them when I was shopping around, but I never got a chance to hear them.
From what I heard, the DB do fine as long as you throw em rated power and correctly filter, that's why I took the risk (after hearing them in a few builds).

Great video- The one place I would recommend would be in a rear deck that happens to be sealed when using 2 or more 10" or bigger. It will help keep the sound pressure from subs pushing the smaller midbass causing over excursion- SQ- In my opinion , It does not help. I am building a SQ Challenger and these are not going to be in my design- I am porting my rear deck with a 10" opening that will isolate the midbass from the subs. Video to come in a few months.. Plan is ISACA. We'll see.....
I can see using them for that, to help protect from the sub pressure. They’re definitely not useless, just not for me. Not for this build.

I bought these long time ago to use with my 6.5 upgrade since bmw originally used them but with 5.25. So when I got the 6.5 installed after much modifications I wanted to install the baffle mainly for weather protection and I noticed the speaker when comes in contact with the foam it buzzes ? Did you notice any effects like that ?
My 6.5 are on the larger side so they aren’t fit in that foam baffle, so I gave up on them
Do you mean like as if the speaker had interference? I didn't have that, but I DID notice that the foam was kinda vibrating with the beat, almost as if the cone was hitting the foam (but it wasn't). It was like the foam couldn't handle the pressure.
But yea with my new speakers, they don't even almost fit in the baffles, so the baffles are just sitting on the shelf
What is your opinion on the Recoil silicone baffles in regards to sound quality?
I actually haven't tried them. But giving them a look on Amazon, I would honestly expect most of the benefit of those to come from weather protection. It would seem like they affect the sound quality about as much as these foam baffles did, but again, I'm just taking a guess.
Having an open back might help them out though. Would be an interesting little test!
Get a dsp and adjust speaker timing to correct phase and remove the midbass null

I have in all my doors.. to protect from..water and snow and dust to protect my T2 RF Power 6.5...
for weather protection, I totally understand them...it's just as a sound enhancement that they fall short (but I don't think that was ever really the intention).
And I bet those get down real nice! My first subs were T2 12s (the metal face)...got me hooked on car audio!
Great video, I’ve been curious about these for a while now. The problem with speakers that small is they can only play so loud at lower frequencies, they most likely roll off significantly at 150-200hz and forcing them to play lower than that would cause higher distortion at high volumes. Look into getting a calibrated microphone and REW software on a computer, that’ll allow you to test the capabilities of each speaker in your system. Hopefully that helps a little
Definitely! I don't expect a crazy amount of mid bass from a 6.5, but I definitely wanna squeeze out as much as possible you know? That was why I rolled off the low mids in the first place, to limit distortion.
And it's funny you mention the calibrated mic because I've been meaning to get one anyway for work, (I'm actually an audio engineer when not doing car audio).
I actually have another set of speakers to install to REALLY address the mid bass (besides the DB 6.5s), but I'm keeping that quiet for now.

@@DaBadNewz The mic and software are really handy, I use it mostly for my home theater speaker calibration and testing house curves along with many other things. But recently found out that it works well car audio systems. Using the softwares pink noise and individual tone generators really helps with setting up equalizers, speaker limitations, time delay and many more things. It’s powerful software for people who love tinkering with the sound of speakers. Definitely worth it. My microphone was maybe $100 and the software is free to download

Ya PORT the Boom Mat enclosure in relation to corner loading aka the port should aim towards the front of the door. Simple hole in the Boom Mat will direct lower freqs towards the door and corner load thus an INCREASE in BASS.... Something ya gotta TWEAK. Good Video. BDBD/2024.

@@DaBadNewz Old Timer here... installer from the 70's... 80's.... 90's.... 2000's...LOL.... Hung it up in 2008, called it a CAREER. I have worked on thousands of sound systems in as many cars. The DOOR... You can get a lot of sound out of them TO a POINT... Heres a trick. Calculate the AIRSPACE inside that DOOR there and LOAD in Speakers that match that reading... I am the 6x9 in the door guy... (the 70') here. I WISH I could fit 6x9's in my Kia doors... They have a WARM sound along with strong bottom end response as 6x9's go... BIGGER THE BETTER in the DOORS... My take. Heres to EXPERIMENTATION... and then helping the general PUBLIC with your RESULTS.... Very good... keeping the FLAME of AUTOSOUND..... LIT.... for yet another GENERATION..... Go make some NOISE!!!!!!!!!!!! BDBD/2024.

And that sounds like a much smarter approach to the doors. My plan was gonna be to throw shit at it until something works! Measuring everything out and doing it the right way sounds a little more cost effective though.

That's definitely an option, but I'd rather give my speakers more airspace than the baffles can provide...plus, they don't even fit over the Arnolds! Magnet too fat lol.

Nah you're totally right, they don't. Door speakers are designed to be run infinite baffle, so sealing them in a tiny foam pod is not going to do anything for midbass. Sound treating the inner and outer door shell plus the door panel and securing wiring, clips, the door lock and window panel etc to eliminate vibration and completely isolating the front wave from the back wave is the best course of action to squeeze the most performance out of any speaker in that location. Also, MDF speaker rings are going to absorb moisture and rot/decay. We have the same car and I'm even going black and green. I am a former pro installer starting a MASSIVE competition SQL build and a full sound treatment of the doors with ABS speaker rings and some other goodies are next after brakes if you wanna connect on IG. What will help is a foam ring around the speaker that mates to the door panel and directs sound into the cabin instead of into the the interior of the panel.
Yea getting the door sealed better is exactly what I did (that video drops tomorrow!).
And the MDF is a “temporary” solution for that exact reason. I’m also planning on ABS, but I’ve been considering acrylic for lighting purposes (the only reason I don’t have em yet).
The fast rings would definitely help though!
And I’d love to check out an SQL build in one of these, sounds like a cool project.

I honestly just got lucky! Went to the junkyard for some daytime running lights and found these by accident. If you look up other toyota rumion parts, you might find some extra accessories (but still not many)

Just use Tupperware or plastic containers and foam them whatever they work better bottoms of windshield washer jugs you know there's so many different things you can use that are just being thrown away in the trash every day
I can honestly say I have never heard that one before! While I don’t even doubt that something a little more rigid than foam (like plastic) would probably do a little more for the sound than the foam baffles, I don’t think I necessarily want my speakers having such a minimal airspace. I’m kinda going the other route and turning the whole door into an enclosure.

Yea that was noticeable in person too. It COULD have been my "temporary" install, or the fact that the wires weren't laid down quite as cleanly as I could have, but I think we get the idea...PASS

Maybe fiberglassing it would get better results. At the end of the day I'd just sound deaden and block off plates for the door holes.
Yea that’s been a pretty popular suggestion, but after switching to the DBs, it just made way more sense to do exactly what you said and do a more complete sound deadening job. And I have some plans for plates, but non installed just yet.

@DaBadNewz no problem. I got a superduty, and the block off plated improved my mid bass substantially. Then again, I was running 8" dedicated mid bass. Those coaxals would struggle no matter what you do. The DB you got will definitely do the job. Only benefit is weather proofing, recoil audio got some nice silicone back rings to prevent water damage.
Yea and those DBs aren’t the only thing I got for the mid-bass either! Got more surprises coming!

I tried them in the past when they first came out. I installed in all 4 corners and found i lost all my midbass, so i pulled them all out the next day. Theyre still sitting in a corner somewhere 15yrs later

not a bad idea! these baffles aren't even big enough for my new speakers, but that's still worth coming back to at some point since they're just taking up space now

Just a tip your using them for the wrong reason, these are made for the purpose of having subs in a trunk, the pressure from the subs moving air in the trunk would distort and destroy the speakers mounted in the back glass that are closest to the sub box. And for this purpose they work great, if you have a friend with a trunk sub setup you should do another video on the SQ of the speakers in the said back glass, good job on the video tho.
I was actually trying to test how well they stand up to the claims made on their website and Amazon pages. The pictures of these things always show them in doors, and they claim an audio benefit, so I was testing that specific use.
I don’t doubt they would help against sub pressure, but that particular use is never even suggested by Boom Mats, so that wasn’t really the point (I was kinda just disproving what they had posted on their website because it seemed like bs).
I do agree that it would be interesting to do the test again in a rear deck just for the science though.

@@DaBadNewz cool I didn't look at the site before I commented, but I think there's one maby two other company's in the past that's made about the same thing as this when I was in high school. That's what we used them for back in the day. Me and my buds always had some of the better SQ builds with reg equipment. But really when you done your test I did notice a diff in the tone change from before and after, I'll bet if all four channels where done and the doors closed up with no sub it would be a lot better SQ on the mids at higher vol. Again good job on the video and badass sub box!
Yea there's definitely a few different versions by different companies, but I think they're all pretty similar. And yea there was a slight change in tone, but I wasn't particularly liking the direction it was going, plus the foam was actually causing some distortion from the sound pressure from that weak ass 6.5 powered off the HU.
I would still test them again in the future to maybe find what scenario would make the most of out of them, but as far as using them in this build? Nah!

Yea those are not all that. They mainly for keeping out dust and moisture on those paper cone speakers but the marketing department at boom mat had to sauce the description up a little bit lol

imo the baffles made it sound worse. Heard rattling. Rather spend that money on some sound/temp insulation for the doors.
I can see it maybe giving moisture protection for a car with bad window seals/getting leaks down towards the speakers.

You will loose sound for sho, cut the lower half to release the back wave . Car audio display we have we tried using them and it ruined the sound . Utopia focal lol

@@DaBadNewz yep, I also have a scion xb 1st gen I turned into a truck lol, best thing to make mids sound better is to soundproof the doors as they are so cheaply made it almost feels like a tin can, also also apply some sound proofing to the door skin so it improves stifness, good video 👍🏻
oh you did the truck conversion? nice! Those always look really cool. And yea deadening is essential in these cars...from the factory you can hear the cost-saving! choking your speaker out is never the solution, it's a waste of money. if you want you could buy them and then cut the pitted part out completely and use it as a dampening cutout, but that's REALLY nit picking. waste of money, waste of time waste of effort, never choke your speakers out like that.
I mean for me personally there is just no real use for them. A few people have mentioned cutting holes in them, but I feel like if you have to do that, you’re no longer reviewing the product and instead reviewing the potential. Plus, I’m just not that interested in incorporating them long term; there’s just no need for them in this build at the moment.

They help keep water off the damn speakers too. Chevy trucks and a lot of others allow water to come into the door.
I cut a hole on the bottom. I use them to keep the water off the speakers in my truck
I can definitely see them being pretty good at that. I think that's about their only real use
