BIG thanks to Gojira for the shout out on Facebook!! We appreciate that fellas! Thank you to everyone who brought this to our attention as well! facebook.com/GojiraMusic/
I keep saying this, but the metal community has embraced you guys so much for the honesty you bring. Watching you guys react makes me remember why I love heavy music. I'm old and jaded, and watching you guys brings me back to the openness of when I first was listening to music like this
As a metalhead, do I like Gojira? Absolutely, unequivocally, YES. I'm 54 now, mother of two grown children, have listened to metal/hard rock since age 11. I cut my teeth on Sabbath, Zeppelin, and AC/DC, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Robin Trower, Van Halen, et al, and kept my ears and mind opened to every incarnation of the genre as it morphed and evolved over the decades. I love everything from groove metal to death metal to math metal and more, but I tell you this: Gojira has been a fucking revelation. They're just phenomenal.
womanskornd Oh!! A kindred spirit! I’ve been a rocker since I was ten and heard Hell’s Bell’s the first time...thought I’d just died and went to Metal Heaven...another band I’ve been really having a blast with is Avatar. They rock the hut and don’t hurt the eyes either. 😉
Always been my exact thoughts about Gojira. I can understand him, their lyrics are beautiful, they have great grooves, and they’re extremely talented and precise.
You can definetily hear the vocalists influence from Philip Anselmo. Well.. Gojira obviously has taken inspiration from Pantera in general, but made it their own. What a band.
Gojira is the band that will take up the Metal mantle after Metallica. Even the members of Metallica have said so. They are ahead of their time, and they've actually been around since the early 2000's.
They'll certainly be talked about like Metallica in ten years time. I mean metallica has master master , gojira has whales whales 😂 band of their time making timeless classics
I had a funny start with Gojira. I recently got more into metal and it started with Periphery, when I stumbled upon Reptile and they just released Hail Stan. During my digging, I found Stranded as recommendation. I listened to quite a few prog/x metal things back in April this year, because as non metal head it was difficult to judge Periphery, I needed a benchmark (/education). Stranded was odd enough to make me listen twice, BUT, engrossed in Periphery stuff I shelved it. Nothing else caught my attention, and I went back to Periphery. Yeaah, I'm a type that obsesses with songs or bands. Fast forward 2,5 months, I got saturated/content with Periphery music, I was ready to obsess about some new thing. Stranded riff survived in my head, and I consciously stated that it's time to listen to it again. Gojira had to wait a couple of months, but now, when I could listen Gojira with clearer non-peripheried mind, it's their time now. And I absolutely love it, especially live versions. And tomorrow, O2 Brixton London, I'm going to see them live, so I'd say, Stranded resurfaced in my brain with an impeccable timing. :D So I agree with you, this song made me hooked on Gojira.
Gojira was formed in 1996 in Bayonne, France. There would have been an official video for this song. Duplantier brothers (drummer and guitarist/vocalist) mother died during the writing/recording process and this song is about the sorrow and pain of their lost
I'm an old metal head. I came into Gojira with Flying Whales. Heaviest matter in the universe pulled me in and I never looked back. This album Magma has been on my playlist since it came out. Great review as always. Love the stinkface, it shows you are being converted. Lmao.
I'll let you guys in on a secret about metal fans (older school fan here): most of us are partial to the kinds of metal we fell into when we were young and first discovered it. Or variations thereof. This is a cool fucking track and I can tell you that if I were 15, this would be my new favorite shit. Most of the people who whine about the new stuff can't get over their own nostalgia. I can't either, for the most part, but I can at least appreciate why the kids are into this band. This is part of the reason I dig your videos. I like seeing both the songs I love and the new hotness from a different perspective. It lets me get out of my own way and hear some cool new shit.
I'm an old head and I can tell you we're in a new metal golden age. Not mainstream, no. But If you're looking there's ton of great stuff out there in the underground.
I don't think I'm like that at all I've been a metal head since I was 14 and now I'm 27 and my taste in metal has evolved drastically to where over the course of my listening I've got into a wide range. I think it's more accurate to say most metal heads will have a subgenre or subgenres of metal they can just never find appealing.
Agree with your assessment. I think mid to late teens are the primary formative age when developing a style of music you're attracted to. My suggestion two cents would be Apocalyptica - I'm not Jesus. It mixes a non screaming Corey Taylor with a very unique way of playing metal with cellos and classical instruments without it being a Metallica symphony album. I'm an older guy who played metal when I was a kid and picked up the cello recently to expand on what I can do musically. It gives an appreciation of what those guys in Apocalyptica do with their instruments.
@@chrisfrost7945 Nah they both felt it. Look at Ryan he's bobbing and calls it out too. They're both good at feeling it happen before it hits. Check out their Conjuring reaction and how Ryan absolutely nails his hunch on both the transition and the following "They about to slow this shit down" way before it happens just from the groove :D
Proven fact that this guys live and respect music for real. I feel that good groove too. Same with deftones, sepultura or inmortal technique reactionst. Good vibes and free thinking 4 real. Respect.
Honestly, it'd be much better if they did an uninterrupted first listen, then comment while possibly replaying specific parts to illustrate their points. I find their habit of pausing quite annoying TBH (the one and only thing that bothers me about them), and it also probably detracts somewhat from their overall first experience of a song.
Thanks so much for doing GOJIRA. They have so much more to offer. The drummer is often voted Best metal drummer. The lyrics to this song are about losing their mom to cancer as the drummer and singer are brothers. Emotional stuff
gojira is a french group that was formed in 1996. This is a song from their last album magma which is more melodic than their past ones because the mother of the singer and the drummer died while they were creating it . Their past albums are much more aggresive.(sorry for bad english by the way it's because i'm french)
I'm 40 and been listening to metal since I was a tiny fella...Gojira is easily the best new metal band I've heard in 20 years, no joke. These guys are amazing
WTf how are you guys so cool ? seeing you dudes head banging and discovering love FER TH METAL for the first time just warms my cold heard man, shiiit you guys are awesome !
Ryan, George, you've created a very cool way for me to re-engage with some songs I've loved (for a long time in some cases), so for that, I appreciate you. You've also found a niche market that is really exciting to metalheads ... and that is sharing what we love. Especially with people who both don't typically go the metal route, but moreso with people who just love music ... period. Thanks for the entertainment, I hope you are gettin' some cheques for this stuff and keep giving the people what we want! I ain't making no song requests, cuz I'm diggin' the suprise every time a video pops up Respect from an Aussie metalhead (who also likes good rap) \m/
Actually, I will throw out a request. Maybe the best best Aussie metal (fusion) band ... 12 Foot Ninja! A lot of their official videos are basically short movies, so ya may have to skip to when the music starts. Or not, the videos are usually pretty hilarious or disturbing. Again, that's 12 Foot Ninja lads!
Guys, read up on the history of the album. The singer and the drummer are brothers, and during the production of this album their mother died. Guess why they feel "Stranded".
Laura Biasotti I had no clue about this and now I feel terrible for Joe and Mario :( I’ll give Magma another listen with this perspective; they deserve it.
Opeth - Drapery Falls ... perfect entrypoint for an amazing band. Love your videos, it's nice to see some non-metal guys appreciate another genre. Go free thinkers!
Thank you for bringing Gojira to my ears! You guys are awesome. I probably would never have heard of them because I've been stuck I my old metal ways. I keep getting pleasantly surprised by your channel. You guys rock!
Don't like them, and fyi they don't pay their bills either. I can't tell you how many free logos I have done that went to these types of people. I had to stop doing it because I catered to this type of fanbase and they just are close minded and arrogant as hell. Never stopped any of them from using my artwork though.
you're using your anecdotal experience to generalize an entire genre's band and audience by calling them close-minded and arrogant. i guess the hypocrisy is entirely lost on you.
If you're referring to me I have 20 years of first hand experience with these people and even considered myself one of them. That being said I know literally first hand how closed off some of these people can be. It's not anecdotal at all, it's called life experience.
Please, guys! Opeth - Ghost of Perdition, it has growls, BEAUTIFUL clean vocals, LOTS of those transitions that you love, exellent drumming ... Musicianship at its best! And congratulations, this channel is amazing!
@Nick Martinelli I'm watching these series back to back (grunge and now Gojira) and I definitely noticed that parallel too! George is more of a metalhead and Ryan is more of a grunge lover. Super cool to see their passion and appreciation come out in each video!
Gojira live is a spiritual experience. Mario is one of the best drummers in our universe. Check out any of their live performances, the tightest band I've ever seen. Joe , Christian, Mario and Jean-Michel are metal royalty.
Gojira is GOD! Metal elitist here for sure. Gojira is my all time FAVORITE! Been around since the earlier 2000's when they came out with Terra Incognita. They are very, very highly regarded in the metal community and loved the world over. They were nominated to 2 grammys for the album you guys are listening to here and topped the french billboards at something like #28. It's generally agreed that Gojira are easily one of the BEST sounding live metal band there is as well. Congratulations fellas. You've definitely just been exposed to some true masters of metal here.
Gojira is beyond good. I grew up with '80s thrash and speed metal. It's what I love, and Gojira fits right in. They don't get the exposure they deserve.
Been a metalhead for 30 years, and I love Gojira more than Metallica and Black Sabbath. Just saw this live it was 🔥. I absolutely love Gojira. Thanks guys. Mario is a damn monster on those drums.
Vacuity is such a great fkking song, on some epic real rock/metal shit, melodic and lyrically deep, too.. the way Mario pinches every first and third crash cymbal during those first verses, and the cymbal pinching on that last section (which actually kinda grooves).... so creative. Would love to see their take on this, or Backbone... v. good call!
I never heard of Gojira before. I'm not a metalhead, but I acquired some taste of it from my older brother who is one (and a drummer as well). To give you a description, I grew up as a Duran Duran fan and I like other bands such as Depeche Mode or The Police. So thanks to my brother who forcefully made me listen to Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and everything related to Led Zeppelin (I had no choice, he used to blast the sound system), I broadened my music taste and I need once in a while some heavy stuff. Thanks for this reaction. I'm going to check more of Gojira's songs.
Guys, art of dying (this song is for you George, trust me, I'll explain) or flying whales next. (DEFINITELY FLYING WHALES FIRST) I know you dudes love your lyrics, especially given that you're rap enthusiasts and that's the focus of the genre, and bo does flying whales have meaning. It comes from a concept album about a man traveling through space (taught to fly by the "flying whales") to restart life on earth, now an ocean planet. The whole record is about saving the environment and stuff. It's amazing lyrically. AMAZING. Flying Whales is about when he finally finds the whales and they teach him to fly through space. And George! Even if it ain't on video, you gotta hear the drums on Art of Dying. The drumming is insanely complex. It's highly polyrhythmic and poly metered, which means that it has multiple conflicting rhythmic patterns being played at once on top of one another and that it frequently switches between many time signatures (4/4 2/4 and 21/16 if I remember correctly). Now if you don't know what any of that music jargon means, here's the gist: rhythms so complicated you can't keep track of it. Still head bangable, still heavy as all hell. George, please listen to this song.
Wow@Joe being really into rap, that's very cool to learn... I recently got into Gojira, like 6 months ago, and love them to death, can't get enough. I've gotta go see 'em live too, I know... These reaction vids, and the love these dudes are getting for their open-minded takes and admiration for this incredible band, well.. hits me right in the feels, as they say, and it does this older black dude's heart (44) good to see all of this....
Just heard them live in Noblesville, Indiana for Knotfest. They had the crowd going nuts and showed us fans great appreciation for our support. Absolutely awesome live! Rock on 🤘
Old metalheads such as myself love it. Metal elitists love it. Best metal band from France. Their name is the original Japanese name of Godzilla. www.metal-archives.com/bands/Gojira/18351
Another shout for OPETH. They are fast, beautiful, complex, shredding, soft, raging - everything a growing boy needs. They have given up on the style and gone mad prog now, but when they released Blackwater Park, they were legit the best metal band on the planet. Try THE LEPER AFFINITY (first song off the album), as it is the most magical intro to the band, and has converted a large amount of friends in the past!
Totally missing some Opeth reactions. I love them so much. From My Arms, Your Hears all the way through Watershed it was only 10/10 albuns in my opinion. One masterpiece after another and I can't possibly choose which one of that sequence of albums would be my favorite.
I come back to this video often as seeing you guys experience this song for the first time is such a show of unbridled joy. If I need a smile, this is a go to.
Gojira is by far and away the singular band that stands out from the oversaturation of the commercialization of metal. I ve grown up with metal for 20 years and the last 6 i havent listened to any if at all but Gojira, Meshuggah, Opeth are the very few exceptions.
Fear Factory has the metal screaming and melodic break downs in most of their songs. Their drummer is ridiculous also! Some songs to start with maybe: Archetype; Zero Signal; Replica; Resurrection.
Love it guys, I'd love to see you react to something by one of my favorites, Mastodon. "Blood and Thunder," "Megalodon," "Colony of Birchmen," "The Wolf is Loose," or "Oblivion" are all great options. Keep up the good work!
Honestly dude, any mastodon is awesome! I think The Czar would be an excellent song for these guys to check out. But literally any song would do just fine.
I just wanna see them get into the complexities of Mastodon. It takes multiple listens to really get everything out of a mastodon song but The Czar just feels like a journey. Also, did anyone listen to their new EP? I think it's fantastic.
It looks like they're using a digitech whammy pedal; but I'm sure you could accomplish the same thing with an octavizer going upward in pitch. Which is what the first guy said...so....... Time to go home.
Love you guys! I started watching your channel this past year and I'm sorry I didn't find you sooner! Your reaction to some of my favorite bands and music is incredibly similar to mine! Makes me smile every time. You remind me why I'm so into metal music and the emotions it can evoke. Gets me motivated, moving, happy feeds my soul. I'm a 59 year old great grandmother who cut my teeth on bands like Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and many others. Now, Gojira has renewed my faith that all is not lost to the music world and I first heard their music on this very video! Please never stop doing what you're doing. You're very informative and sincere! Stay amazing!
Please listen to Toxic Garbage Island from Gojira if you want some amazing drumming. Ouroborus and L'enfant Sauvage too are amazing. All songs from Gojira. :) Their drummer is insanely talented so it's no wonder you're so impressed.
Just incase no one has answered this yet:_ The sound is created by an effect pedal (Digitech Whammy) which shifts the note up 2 octaves and gives a less natural sound. You can hear the original notes without the pedal on the section the vocals come in. This effect is commonly used by Tom Morrello of Rage Against The Machine and Dimebag RIP of Pantera on the solos. Gojira also regularly use another unique sound in their songs that is a pick scrape
The high pitched part in the first riff is achieved by using a Digitech Whammy Pedal-It is basically a pitch shift effect used with a expression pedal. Dimebag used it a ton, Steve Vai(Eventide),etc. Gojira is Legit-Metalhead since 1980 The song Global Warming has a unique message. One of my favorites
You need to listen to Flying Whales from Gojira. Similar to the issue you had with Metallica and listening to their later songs, Flying Whales was on their "From Mars to Sirius" album which is widely considered their "Master of Puppets" of albums.
Gojira (yesss... Go Jeera) is a French metal band that has been around since '96, called Godzilla then. Changed to Gojira in 2001, so not as new as you'd think. These dudes are money. Saw them live, three songs in the entire crowd breaks into a "Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit!" chant. Great reaction. That's pretty much the same as everyone checking them out for the first time. Wondering what you'd think of Ghost. And still waiting on Testament - Electric Crown. I'm ready to throw Overkill at you too... Hello From the Gutter, Elimination, or if you want blazing drums... the Armorist.
Gojira, French progressive/death metal band since 1996. It sounds to me like they used a combination of Pitch shifter + wah pedal on the guitar intro of Stranded : ) So glad you enjoyed it, a thousand big ups to Lost in Vegas from Baguette Country.
That's Pretty much how the effect is done, they are using that red wha pedal that has the pitch shift effect. It's the same effect Emmure used to use as well as Josh Travis formerly of The Tony Danza TapDance Extravaganza
Yeah!! So many good riffs are made with that pitch effect. It has become a classic, like the whammy bar dive bombing techniques in the 1980's.. Love Emmure too by the way !!
I'm 54y/o and have been listening to Metal since I first discovered Black Sabbath when I was 10 in 1973. So, I guess I could be considered old school. Yeah! Gojira is the real deal. I like their work. I've become a big fan of bands that use all of the musical instruments as percussion instruments. In other words, the guitars become another type of drum that lay down heavy rhythmic beats. Also, the Growling vocals can be considered another type or kind of percussion instrument giving the song a darker and heaver vibe and feel. I would enjoy watching y'all explore some Kataklysm. Specifically from their last album Of Ghosts and Gods. The song Thy Serpent's Tongue would be a great start. Rock On, Men! 🤘🏼👊🏼
Thanks to you Lost in Vegas I found Gojira. Now one of my favorite metal bands. Appreciate your work fellas. Love all your videos. Rap, Rock, Metal, Country (some) - its all good
I have to say, the screaming in metal was an acquired taste for me - and after acquiring this taste, gojira’s screams sound like smooth chocolate velvet. Just the best for me.
Absolutely thrilled to have seen a Gojira video by you guys. I saw them live back in August. They are amazing. I highly recommend to you guys Iced Earth - Black Flag. I think you guys will dig the vocalist.
This band is by far the greatest band I've ever seen live. They have a level of atmosphere in the shows that not many bands are able to pull off and their live sound is just phenomenal. If you ever want to see a metal band live then book your tickets for these guys.
Black Tongue, Colony of Birchmen, Chimes at Midnight, Iron Tusk, Tread Lightly, Divinations, Crack the Skye, Oblivion, Sleeping Giant, Capillarian Crest, Cold Dark Place
Dio - Last in Line Dio was/is (because he will forever live on in every metal heart) the best lyricist metal has ever seen, with his vocal power and great back ground music everyone's brain just explodes. Dio is also known for his time in Rainbow (1975 - 1978) and Black Sabbath (1980 - 1983) So the guy is old school. To bad he died in 2010 due to stomach cancer...
Gojira are absolute monsters and Magma was an album absolute wrought with emotion. When it was being produced, the Duplantier brothers’ (singer/rhythm guitarist and drummer) mother died. I always thought Stranded was a sort of desperate plea from them to her to not leave them, and how it left them isolated and alone, feeling like they should rather be dead (Kill me Face down, dead). That’s just my two cents on the song’s meaning. But otherwise you guys are chill, fun, and awesome! Keep it up with the hype songs and awesome reviews!
*Opeth - Bleak*. One of the most unique bands in the world. Some may argue about the best song for you guys to listen to, but this one is relatively short for progressive death metal and has good examples of all of their different sounds and styles. I know you guys love progressions / transitions. Opeth will have about 20 of them in a single track lol. They'll go from progressive death metal with some of the most brutal growling vocals to acoustic folk and clean vocals with no warning whatsoever. The best part is how smoothly they do it. You just have to listen to truly understand. Many people have a hard time getting past the growling at first, but it's definitely worth your time. Sorry for the wall of text.
Again I'm going to agree and say these dudes have no choice but to check out opeth. Great explanation by the way and I really want to see them react to something by opeth. We all want it, now deliver the goods guys (which you should give Judas priest's delivering the goods a listen some time too).
Yeah, they aren't going to like Opeth. Opeth are super fucking cookie monster gutteral heavy, then clean tone super smooth clean singing. Opeth are fucking awesome, but over the place where you just don't know what the fuck you are listening to from all the transitions.
This. Fucking this. The drumming on that album is so fucking good. Everything is, really. That's the album that got me into Death Metal and Technical Death Metal.
Kingdom is absolutely the way to introduce people to Devin, and the EMGtv video is the perfect version of it, since it showcases not only how great the song is, but also devin's hilarious personality.
Gojira was a good call - one of the better bands in the mainstream of metal as of right now. If you return to them, check out some of their earlier work - Flying Whales is a classic. If you return to the extreme side of metal, I suggest Necrophagist - Ignominous & Pale. The apex of technical proficiency and songcrafting skills in extreme metal. Otherwise, I would love to see you guys do Sepultura - Roots Bloody Roots. I think you'll appreciate the groove.
*The Heavier Songs by gojira:* *Silvera* *Flying Whales* *Vacuity* *The heaviest Matter of the Universe* *The Art of Dying* *The more calmer songs:* *Born in Winter* *Gift of Guilt* *Only pain* *Global Warming* This is if they needed new gojira songs to check out
I'm 30 and I was lucky to be introduced into Hardcore, Metal, punk and rap music since an early age; I also play in music bands (that I won't mention or promote). Been watching you guys since first 1000 subs (4real) and sharing the same love for this incredible band, probably the top #1 modern metal band worldwide. Thank you for sharing your feelings towards music and not just focussing on one genre. And keep doing your thing, being entertaining, honest and respectful. Much love. Paul.
Gojira gets a ton of respect for being relatively new, them, Red Fang, Mastodon, Corrosion of Conformity etc all great bands in their own right but a very sludge/stoner metal sound. Great vid as always.
Antoine MARTIN IKR? In terms of their appeal in their respective market they aren't as well known, I love their music, I was citing them as a source bc it wasn't until recently that they've started touring with more well known bands and getting their music to a wider audience. That's all, sorry to offend their number 1 fan, my apologies.
Seeing as you guys seem to enjoy well executed transitions within songs and drums, you should totally give "Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars" a try. There's a rehearsal version on UA-cam that shows the band while performing the song that I can 100% recommend. I'd be very surprised if that song isn't to your liking. Just search for : "Wintersun - Sons of winter and stars - Live rehearsal @ Sonic Pump Studios"
This is definitely one of my favorite songs by them and had helped me get through some rough times of serious depression, Someone else put it like this "To me it sounds like someone who's battling mental illness (growing sickness...The cure is somewhere in the silence, But I'm crushed by the noise inside...), who needs the support of people around him, but doesn't really get it." There were times when I needed to get out of my head and seek peace. To me this band definitely has some ties to the metaphysical, unplugging and getting grounded. Another favorite of mine by Gojira is Born in Winter or Esoteric Surgery. If you want to try a VERY different band whom I think are the best of their particular genre I would love to see your guys reaction to...brace yourselves...lol...Fleshgod Apocalypse, specifically the "KING" album. I don't thinkmany would disagree that these guys are phenomenal musicians/technicians which is why as different as Gojira is to Fleshgod Apocolypse they are both way up there in the ranks for me.
Just found your channel and have been watching for a few hours now. It's obivous that you blokes like the groove metal. Some more Pantera might be in order.
Old Gojira is sick Mario Duplantier is super amazing with his time signatures. Art of Dying is beyond Impressive. Same with The Way of All Flesh. And anything from Le’ Enfaunt sauvages. (Pardon my spelling) gotta love French heavy metal)
BIG thanks to Gojira for the shout out on Facebook!! We appreciate that fellas! Thank you to everyone who brought this to our attention as well!

Thanks you guy for listened best french metal band !!!!!
Sepultura's Desperate Cry or Inner Self if you like good guitars.
You guys also got a shout out from Phil Anselmo the singer from Pantera for your Walk reaction
I keep saying this, but the metal community has embraced you guys so much for the honesty you bring. Watching you guys react makes me remember why I love heavy music. I'm old and jaded, and watching you guys brings me back to the openness of when I first was listening to music like this

I'm 49 and i totally agree. They're just phenomenal !!!
Amen, dude. Same here. Grew up on Rush, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Zep. Gojira has a uniqueness about them I can't nail. I just know they have "it".
Could we interest you in little bit of TOOL?
Metalhead here, Gojira is good? No, Gojira is just metal perfection.
Best band I've heard in a couple.decades easily. I'm 40 and have seen about ever legend....Gojira is already with those legends.
Last time I think got this excited about a band was 1st time I heard sepultura in the 90s lol
exactly
Amen brother. The ONLY band and/or artist who I'd say can surpass Gojira is the one and only Devin Townsend. 🤟🏻😁
the best thing France give us
The scream works for me on this band cause you can understand what he is saying and it’s still gives the vibe of him actually singing , great band
Yeah he's got great technique. That's why I like Randy Blythe from LoG too.
Always been my exact thoughts about Gojira. I can understand him, their lyrics are beautiful, they have great grooves, and they’re extremely talented and precise.

His scream also follows a melody - some metal it's more percussive, his scream is more melodic
I can understand most if not all screams. Unless they are ridiculous like in Slam Metal or shit like Pig Squeals.
You get used to it over time.

96 to be exact godzilla but changed name bcuz of legal issue's to gojira
Even comparing the two is heresy.
I don't know where you been, but Metallica hasn't carried that torch in quite some time.
@@cofpaddy this made me laugh way harder than it should have
This is the song that made me fall in love with Gojira.
Jugetti same
Same. Wish I coulda found them earlier tho

👍 yes
Gojira was formed in 1996 in Bayonne, France.
There would have been an official video for this song.

I think that happened to all of us like "hey this seems good and different....interesting". That is what the expression on his face tells to haha
"I like that" and the journey starts..
totally
Ahah spot on, the moment he became a fan
LOL. For real. Changed forever.
The NotSoGuitarGuy 100% that.
Perfectly articulated.
I've never heard it put that well, but yeah.
The face that George makes when the riff starts.. the way he says, "MMmm!" when the drum fills hit..
this guy really feels metal
George for sure is in tuned with the metal sound. He tends to be more in tuned with more of the aspect realm of music, wish I appreciate.
The riff is a cat screaming when it gets step on
i'm a bit scared that after getting into Gojira, nothing will be as good. Tool and these guys are the best metal bands to me so far.
Seeing them on the same weekend in Sacramento..
Facts, I feel the same way... I'm overdosing on Gojira!!!
Alter Bridge and Gojira are the perfect duo imo.
Man, Death is another supreme godly band that u have to try
What about High on Fire? Another band for me that scratches an itch few others do.
Little did we know this would start George's journey 😂
I'm rewatching their Gojira vids.
@@pedropratt stuff is gold man, hilarious XD
Ahh I dunno, I feel like Holy Wars really set them both off, I think this was the moment George found his destination if anything!
We all remember the first time we heard Gojira 😅
Slowbro just heard them for the first time on Friday and was blown away by this song
I like that you guys pause for commentary and not talk over the music.
Agreed. Love their reviews.
They have to ;-)
Proven fact that this guys live and respect music for real.
Their past albums are much more aggresive.(sorry for bad english by the way it's because i'm french)
by the way recommend you to check out " Art of dying" and "l'enfant sauvage" those songs are both from gojira and i think that they're just massive.
Who would've thought the french could come out with such a heavy band :D
Riggro dude french metal ain't fucking around. Check out dagoba if you are into gojira
hemald73 t'a un bon anglais haha
Your English is good mate, don't worry.
I'm 40 and been listening to metal since I was a tiny fella...Gojira is easily the best new metal band I've heard in 20 years, no joke. These guys are amazing
Gojira been grinding since the early 2000s. They ain't exactly new lol
Fell the same way bro
WTf how are you guys so cool ? seeing you dudes head banging and discovering love FER TH METAL for the first time just warms my cold heard man, shiiit you guys are awesome !
They sure are!
Same bro
Ryan, George, you've created a very cool way for me to re-engage with some songs I've loved (for a long time in some cases), so for that, I appreciate you.
You've also found a niche market that is really exciting to metalheads ... and that is sharing what we love. Especially with people who both don't typically go the metal route, but moreso with people who just love music ... period.
Thanks for the entertainment, I hope you are gettin' some cheques for this stuff and keep giving the people what we want!
I ain't making no song requests, cuz I'm diggin' the suprise every time a video pops up
Respect from an Aussie metalhead (who also likes good rap) \m/
Actually, I will throw out a request. Maybe the best best Aussie metal (fusion) band ... 12 Foot Ninja! A lot of their official videos are basically short movies, so ya may have to skip to when the music starts. Or not, the videos are usually pretty hilarious or disturbing.
Again, that's 12 Foot Ninja lads!
Guys, read up on the history of the album. The singer and the drummer are brothers, and during the production of this album their mother died. Guess why they feel "Stranded".
Laura Biasotti
I had no clue about this and now I feel terrible for Joe and Mario :( I’ll give Magma another listen with this perspective; they deserve it.
Shooting Star is dedicated to their mother
I wish I had the chance to hear Stranded for the first time again...
For such an amazing song it's surprising simple
Opeth - Drapery Falls ... perfect entrypoint for an amazing band. Love your videos, it's nice to see some non-metal guys appreciate another genre. Go free thinkers!
Thank you for bringing Gojira to my ears! You guys are awesome. I probably would never have heard of them because I've been stuck I my old metal ways. I keep getting pleasantly surprised by your channel. You guys rock!
5:02 The impression of stuck up, elitist metalheads is spot on. Hell yeah Gojira are good.
SPOT ON!!!! There should be a cartoon spoof of a metal elitist.... Coming from a metalhead..... that would be hilarious....!!!
"Life experience" and "anecdotal" are the same thing.
I have nothing else to add to this conversation.
Carry on.
The entire Magma album is unreal
Couldn't agree more!
The entire album is metal perfection
Opeth - Ghost Of Perdition
DO THIS ONE
DO IIIIIT!!
Masterpiece
So much yes
Or The Drapery Falls
Please, guys! Opeth - Ghost of Perdition, it has growls, BEAUTIFUL clean vocals, LOTS of those transitions that you love, exellent drumming ... Musicianship at its best! And congratulations, this channel is amazing!
Heir Apparent
George discovers Gojira. One of the greatest reactions of all time.
Reminds me of when Ryan discovers “Rooster” by AiC hahaha
@Nick Martinelli I'm watching these series back to back (grunge and now Gojira) and I definitely noticed that parallel too! George is more of a metalhead and Ryan is more of a grunge lover. Super cool to see their passion and appreciation come out in each video!
Gojira live is a spiritual experience. Mario is one of the best drummers in our universe. Check out any of their live performances, the tightest band I've ever seen. Joe , Christian, Mario and Jean-Michel are metal royalty.
Yes, Gojira crowds at festivals are like nothing else. A religious experience truly
"That transition was disgusting" 2:58 Good stuff!
Justin Jackson
Well said!
Justin Jackson I 2nd that. Gojira goes hard as hell.
Justin Jackson I 2nd that. Gojira goes hard as hell.
best live band ive ever seen..studio- quality- live- performances
Seen em twice live. Fucking amazing shows
This is good, but Flying whales will blow your mind !
Lordenzus preach that
+1000. Or the combo From Mars & To Sirius. Or the whole album... or discography ;-)
that was really a kickass song
me too man, I saw them twice last year in Glasgow xD. I had neck ache for two days xDD
That whole LP made me fall instantly in love with Gojira. They have been great ever since that first listen.
Gojira is beyond good. I grew up with '80s thrash and speed metal. It's what I love, and Gojira fits right in. They don't get the exposure they deserve.
The squeals in the intro riff were likely done using a Digitec Whammy pedal.
I was about to say that, too.
Correct
Yes, they stuffed a cat into a salad shooter and recorded it with a Sure 58 mic ran through a Whammy pedal direct into the board.
Dave Nichols yep
Opeth. "Deliverance" or "Ghost of Perdition". Progressive with talented musicians.
Lyrici17 them basslines tho
Yes to Deliverance. That was the song that got me into them
THE WHOLE ALBUM PLEASE
Deliverance!!!!!!
If they live the transitions in this song they will love them in deliverance
that outro
The Art of Dying, the drumming will wreck you guys. I mean, WRECK U.
100% Agree, they will not survive. No one can.
Janusz Młynarczyk lol I know, George will pass out for sure xD
@coitinsforyourocky It's HILARIOUS reading this prediction seeing it was now confirmed true! Hahahahaha!
They didn’t survive LOL
Phant0mGetsuga993 had to leave the screen 😂😂😂
Been a metalhead for 30 years, and I love Gojira more than Metallica and Black Sabbath. Just saw this live it was 🔥. I absolutely love Gojira. Thanks guys. Mario is a damn monster on those drums.
Mario Duplantier is a freakin' god. He gives me chills every time. In the top 5 for me. Love him.
Hell yeah, glad you dig them! Really a refreshing and unique band!
i feel that they have a very mastodon vibe to them
You guys are so good other channels are copying you. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Listen to gojira the song is called vacuity it's a older song but it dope as hell
Chris Domico it's my favorite by them
Vacuity is such a great fkking song, on some epic real rock/metal shit, melodic and lyrically deep, too.. the way Mario pinches every first and third crash cymbal during those first verses, and the cymbal pinching on that last section (which actually kinda grooves).... so creative. Would love to see their take on this, or Backbone... v. good call!
Vacuity is one of my favorites also. Off to see Devin Townsend this weekend. Would be fun to see these guys cover him too.
The sickness of this world is destroying all the dreams
This! I totally agree with this! You will enjoy it.
Gojira- Heaviest matters of the universe, check that one out!
Jimmy Willenbrock they posted the reaction to the song. Check it out!
Man I LOVE me some Gojira. Maybe an interesting fact for you guys, the singer Joe Duplantier was really into rap before metal!
Dope!
I believe the singer and guitarist are brothers too
i'm sorry the singer and drummer
They are!
James MacLellan and means " Savior of the Earth "
You should react to Flying Whales next it's their most iconic song.
I hope they do Opeth or Dream Theater next episode .
Either one of them would be great, but I give Opeth the slighter edge.
Gojira shared this on their official Facebook page. 🤘
Gojira is by far and away the singular band that stands out from the oversaturation of the commercialization of metal. I ve grown up with metal for 20 years and the last 6 i havent listened to any if at all but Gojira, Meshuggah, Opeth are the very few exceptions.
cane hill. look them up. Brings me back to 90's ult metal.
Άκου κι άλλες μπάντες ρ υπάρχουν διαμάντια εκεί έξω
Pretty true metal kinda equals a formula now than really the creativity/experimental side it was. But, only the best last with the test of time.
Όντως συμφωνω
So well said
Fear Factory has the metal screaming and melodic break downs in most of their songs. Their drummer is ridiculous also! Some songs to start with maybe: Archetype; Zero Signal; Replica; Resurrection.
jbailey598 They're awesome. Only downside is the lineup changes every other year
I'd start with Self Bias Resistor, but that's probably because it's the first song I heard of theirs that got me into them.
Self bias resistor
Slave labor, zero signal, powershifter and of course Replica.
I also suggest Zero Signal. One of my Favourite all time songs.
One of the best metal band ever. They have their original style of music - aggressive and melodious at the same time.
Hell yeah! It's so refreshing to see how open minded you guys are towards metal!
Hell yea
Love it guys, I'd love to see you react to something by one of my favorites, Mastodon. "Blood and Thunder," "Megalodon," "Colony of Birchmen," "The Wolf is Loose," or "Oblivion" are all great options. Keep up the good work!
Tali Morgan definitely blood and thunder
Yeah. I love all of Mastodon's catalogue....but it's gotta be Blood and Thunder.
Honestly dude, any mastodon is awesome! I think The Czar would be an excellent song for these guys to check out. But literally any song would do just fine.
I love the Czar too, but i mean they turned a 4 min song into 11 mins, idk what they'd do to an 11 min song haha
I just wanna see them get into the complexities of Mastodon. It takes multiple listens to really get everything out of a mastodon song but The Czar just feels like a journey. Also, did anyone listen to their new EP? I think it's fantastic.
They use a guitar pedal called the "Whammy Pedal" which is a foot controlled pitch shifting effect, to get that crazy sound in the intro riff.
TechMetalRules beat me to it. Yeah, that or like an octavizer. I think Morello from RATM does the same thing on Killing in the Name of.
Yeah pretty sure it's an octave pedal not a Wah
It's a sick toy to play with. It throws your guitar like slightly out of tune. Buddy of mine had one.
It looks like they're using a digitech whammy pedal; but I'm sure you could accomplish the same thing with an octavizer going upward in pitch.
Which is what the first guy said...so.......
Time to go home.
First time I heard that same sound was probably on Korn's Follow the Leader album. It is practically the same tone they would utilize too
Love you guys!
Their drummer is insanely talented so it's no wonder you're so impressed.
Just incase no one has answered this yet:_
The sound is created by an effect pedal (Digitech Whammy) which shifts the note up 2 octaves and gives a less natural sound. You can hear the original notes without the pedal on the section the vocals come in. This effect is commonly used by Tom Morrello of Rage Against The Machine and Dimebag RIP of Pantera on the solos. Gojira also regularly use another unique sound in their songs that is a pick scrape
Jake Ettle-Iles thank you for that explanation! I was wondering how it was done.
No problem!
idk how Silvera hasn't flooded your DMs yet Ya'll gotta react to Silvera!!
The high pitched part in the first riff is achieved by using a Digitech Whammy Pedal-It is basically a pitch shift effect used with a expression pedal. Dimebag used it a ton, Steve Vai(Eventide),etc.
Gojira is Legit-Metalhead since 1980
The song Global Warming has a unique message. One of my favorites
You need to listen to Flying Whales from Gojira. Similar to the issue you had with Metallica and listening to their later songs, Flying Whales was on their "From Mars to Sirius" album which is widely considered their "Master of Puppets" of albums.
Old school metalhead here. Gojira are great
Agreed
I’m real picky with metal songs of any genre, and Gojira are one of a few bands where I like the majority of their stuff.
Right?! That’s why I got into them, no gags or schtick, just wrecking shit, and making it beautiful.
Watch Gogira, " The gift of guilt" live at brixton academy. These guys are amazing live!!
Gojira rules 🤘........ Esoteric surgery is an awesome tune of you revisit them
Yes!!!!
If they think the drums sound crazy on Stranded, Esoteric Surgery will kill them
I am 50 and a metal guitar player. I learned my first metal song in 1984. Gojira is one of my favorite bands EVER.
Big Dave HELLO!!!!! HELLO FROM THE GUTTER!!!!
The song that got me into this band, fantastic groove and brilliant vocals on this song
Digitech whammy, nothing to do with wah.
Henri the Horse yea that's it I couldn't remember the name of the pedal but remembered it was the big red stomp with the wha effect footswitch.
for sure... thats a $200 effect, totally worth it if you use it right like in this song.
Jock Doc Check out their song In the Forest, Heaviest song I've ever heard.
Listen to Low Lands. The last riff is nasty.
Listen to...all of it. Lol
Rap, Rock, Metal, Country (some) - its all good
Gojira shared y'alls video on their facebook!!!
I have to say, the screaming in metal was an acquired taste for me - and after acquiring this taste, gojira’s screams sound like smooth chocolate velvet. Just the best for me.
Well said.
Absolutely thrilled to have seen a Gojira video by you guys. I saw them live back in August. They are amazing.
I highly recommend to you guys Iced Earth - Black Flag. I think you guys will dig the vocalist.
I've adored, listened and jammed the shit out of Iced Earth for many years, but I think they'd be better off listening to some classic by them.
This band is by far the greatest band I've ever seen live. They have a level of atmosphere in the shows that not many bands are able to pull off and their live sound is just phenomenal. If you ever want to see a metal band live then book your tickets for these guys.
Gotta get some Mastodon on here ASAP!
separator94 jaguar god.
the last baron
MC Lean Definitely a must.
Black Tongue, Colony of Birchmen, Chimes at Midnight, Iron Tusk, Tread Lightly, Divinations, Crack the Skye, Oblivion, Sleeping Giant, Capillarian Crest, Cold Dark Place
Should definitely check out Mastodon -oblivion
Dio - Last in Line
Dio was/is (because he will forever live on in every metal heart) the best lyricist metal has ever seen, with his vocal power and great back ground music everyone's brain just explodes. Dio is also known for his time in Rainbow (1975 - 1978) and Black Sabbath (1980 - 1983) So the guy is old school. To bad he died in 2010 due to stomach cancer...
Im surprised they havent done a Dio song yet.
@Brett Chillcoat: Ofcourse Elf is amazing in its own way and I listen to it sometimes, but its not metal.
@Stylin' M: Gates of Babylon is probably my fav Dio song ever. Rainbow is just so amazing. Wouldnt mind if they did that song.....
True that, but Elf is just not on the level of those other bands imo.
You guys NEED to do a reaction video to these guys performing live if you haven’t planned for that already. Gojira are absolutely mind blowing live
You guys, GOJIRA shared this on Facebook!
Yes, this is good! Old metalhead here. How bout to black dudes in Vegas got me into a new metal band lmao. I've never heard them either, so thank you!
yo these dudes have gotten love from dave mustaine, phil anselmo, mathew heafy, and now gojira
That's awesome
Сергей Леонтьев did Mustane notice their video?
yeah i think he tweeted it out
Opeth - The Drapery Falls
YES. Saw them play this at the Sydney opera house earlier this year. Shit was amazing
YarbTheLegend Perfect description. Bleak is an ideal gateway Opeth song.
agree
Anything from Orchid to Deliverance would be great. I say The Drapery Falls, Deliverance or White Cluster.
So glad this video is back on UA-cam!!
DEATH - SCAVENGER OF HUMAN SORROW
YES! Thats some fucking drums for you, and crazy riffs
And Symbolic!
Death - Spiritual Healing; Edge of Sanity - Twilight
Yes please!
This. Fucking this. The drumming on that album is so fucking good. Everything is, really. That's the album that got me into Death Metal and Technical Death Metal.
Gojira are one of my favs! Magma is an amazing album!!
What about some Baroness?
Yeah, some of that angry happy blues! 😁
Baroness are amazing!
Purple
ooh fuck yea they should do Rays on Pinion
Sea Lungs!
Global Warming live in the Studio fellas you won't regret it!
Gojira - Born In Winter !
Jeremy Weisman yes definitely
Jeremy Weisman yes! Gift of guilt and the fall too
Hell yeah.
Yassss!!!
Devin Townsend - Kingdom (Live on EMGtv) Keep up the good work!
Anton Näslund YESSSS I LOVE THAT VIDEO
I was searching the comments to see if anyone said this, YES! they need to review them some Devin
Kingdom is absolutely the way to introduce people to Devin, and the EMGtv video is the perfect version of it, since it showcases not only how great the song is, but also devin's hilarious personality.
YES PLEASE!
Anton Näslund all hail Devy! Kingdom is a good starting point but they need to check out SYL as well :D
Malakh Tikkun I think they would enjoy the groove of inner self
Space Time. Or Clone.
Troops of Doom!
Best sepultura track!
Specially live, when Igor speeds it up quite a bit!

This is if they needed new gojira songs to check out
I'm 30 and I was lucky to be introduced into Hardcore, Metal, punk and rap music since an early age; I also play in music bands (that I won't mention or promote).
Been watching you guys since first 1000 subs (4real) and sharing the same love for this incredible band, probably the top #1 modern metal band worldwide.
Thank you for sharing your feelings towards music and not just focussing on one genre. And keep doing your thing, being entertaining, honest and respectful.
Much love.
Paul.
Death - Symbolic - Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P) It's a polished version of Death and will be easier to digest.
Christopher Pumphrey is say death leprosy would be better. You don't want a dirty death, or a polished death. You want heavy death..
These guys already said they can''t handle stuff like that
Gojira gets a ton of respect for being relatively new, them, Red Fang, Mastodon, Corrosion of Conformity etc all great bands in their own right but a very sludge/stoner metal sound. Great vid as always.
I don't link this band to stoner/doom whatsoever and that's my main genre I listen to.
dingeskerz cool
Relatively new for a 20 years old group :)
No worries at all, and you are right because I discovered this band only last year !
+1 on the Wintersun, be sure to check out winter madness if you like good solos :)
Yes that riff sounds like the same effect from Becoming... they need to listen to that one!
Yes this is good.
Was considered the best album of 2016 in metal.
Old Gojira is sick Mario Duplantier is super amazing with his time signatures. Art of Dying is beyond Impressive. Same with The Way of All Flesh. And anything from Le’ Enfaunt sauvages. (Pardon my spelling) gotta love French heavy metal)
SamTheMan The Art Of Dying Is fucking amazing.
And here you both are, almost 2 years later, about to them live in person. You will not be disappointed.
