I think their whole first album is criminally underrated. Satan is a lawyer, Clone, Love, and others are some of the best drums and vocals from Gojira.
The Link Alive 2003 performance in Bordeaux is potentially the heaviest set ever performed by any metal band, the best of their first two albums performed with so much emotion and energy
My introduction to Gojira, back in the day 😃 The riff is just amazing, great song. For your next Gojira analysis, allow me to suggest "Born in Winter" from _L'Enfant Sauvage_ , which shows Joe's vocal range and is an absolute banger of a song musically. Such a great tune.
Just saw them live in St.Louis for the first time on Tuesday night. They were epic!! I couldnt quit smiling the whole set. They played this song too and its just as amazing live. Ugh if i could go back. Watching this us bringing it all back!
I saw them in a festival with friends in 2018, Mexico City. I wasn't even a fan, I went for my friends although I knew a couple songs off Magma (like this one) and liked them. I was totally blown away and walked out an instant fan. Curiously enough, Mastodon played the day earlier and I had pretty much the exact same experience with them. What a treasure it can be, going to shows, especially with friends.
I'd love to see you listen to "Born In Winter". It might not get mentioned the most here but I think it's very underrated. It's simple but such an amazing groove, and brings a sound that only Gojira has. Also showcases some very good vocals!
Gojira has failed to produce a bad song or album to date yet, EVERY song and album is pure gold, one of the best bands to ever take the stage today, nothing but musical geniuses
@@cotopaximusic Exactly, and that’s what I love about the band, all their music from every album has a different sound and feel to it. L’enfant Sauvage is their best album I think, with Magma next, again, it’s hard to pick and choose a best album, they all just fucking rock, and I hope they put out another 20 albums before I die
"Low Lands' is really one of a kind from Gojira, very emotionnal, almost only clear voice all along, deep lyrics, but slowly transition to screaming heavier and heavier toward the end with the emotion rising up... It's a true piece of poetry. When the intimistic sadness unleashes the fury of the raw feelings. It's heavy yet beautiful and hits right in the guts. A really rare gem I think.
It's so gratifying to see someone hear Gojira and hear the emotional tone of it. It confuses people how heavy metal can be so soothing and emotional, and for me it's because it's the most raw feeling in any of the music I listen to. Born in Winter and Low Lands are top picks for emotional crescendos. Plus! Permanent subscriber for the little mental health callout, thank you
Stranded is awesome, but my favorite Gojira song is Art of Dying, it has (in my opinion) the best breakdown in this kind of progressive metal/death metal genre, can't wait for you to hear that.
I went to see Gojira for the 3rd time this past Tuesday in St. Louis. BY FAR one of the best LIVE performances of a metal band ever! The sound the show and the energy are amazing! Highly Recommend!
Biggest and Best band out there right now. I really feel L'enfant Sauvage should be your next dip into Gojira. Joes vocals really shine in that song. And on a side note....eventually you will end up at Flying Whales. I got to enjoy it live just a week ago!!
I listened to this song for the first time the other day. Fell in love with it. Mainly because the chorus just sends me back to the 80's of thrash metal. That groovy, melodic guitar sound. Made me fall in love with metal again, oh how I miss classic thrash, like Metallica.
just got home from the last of the monsters of rock tour with Gojira, Mastadon, and lorna shore.absolutely amazing live and amazing people in all those bands.
His vocals are very unique. He doesn't scream, or is very loud at all. His singing is a bit more than talking voice, he just amplifies the mic a bit more than normal to get the volume.
That's actually the healthy way to do growling vocals. Most singers actually do it this way. If they don't, they'll mess up their voice. It's also why I cringe when people call it screaming. It isn't screaming. At least not if it's down the healthy way. It's more about the attitude you feel when you do it and, of course, the technique.
Just saw these guys for the first time 6 days ago with Lorna Shore and Mastodon and they blew me away. They sound so amazing live and they seem like they really enjoy playing so much.
First time listening to Gojira & when the harsh vocals started, I immediately appreciated how well I could actually understand his words! Back to the video ---
I think L'Enfant Sauvage is even more emotional in terms of vocals. And believe it or not, Amazonia and Stranded are one of the lightest and least heavy songs by Gojira, L'Enfant Sauvage is much closer to their, lets say, "signature sound"
Amazonia and Stranded are far from their lightest tracks. Please listen to all of their work. They have extremely beautiful tracks within every album. They know how to create a vibe.
@@Syphon_Drummer I listened to their entire discography countless times. Stranded and Amazonia are closer to the heavy rock than to typical metal, meanwhile whole first 4 albums are death metal mix with groove metal and prog. Doesnt mean its bad, Im just underlining that most of Gojira stuff sounds different
@MotorhitPL If Amazonia and Stranded are the least heavy songs by Gojira then what can you say about The Chant for example. I must agree with @Syphon_drummer on this
The Art of Dying is such an experience the first time you hear it. It's extremely sad but in such a euphoric way. You'll feel pulled in, like someone is calling you from another world, it'll tear you about and leave you feeling so empty that it hurts.
Heard this live at a festival in Aus last year, the “cats fighting” sound was ear splitting, and then the kick drums hitting you right in the chest was absolutely one of the biggest highlights of my life! Had the biggest stink face during the intro Still gives me chills just thinking about it
If you're going to look at Gojira again, you need to analyze the live version of Global Warming recorded in their studio. It is absolutely perfect and my favorite vocal performance by Joe. You can feel the heartbreak and desperation in his voice and it's beautiful.
In the top 5 of the metal scene currently, gems on every albums, and their live performances are stunning. There still have changed a lot since their start in the 2000's, and Joe's vocal have increased so much, in the way that he is not only growling, but speaking, with an extremely raspy voice. No need to talk about his brother Mario on the drums, on of the best in the world. The 2 other members, are very efficient, and bring their touch, and presence as well on stage, and creativity.
You NEED to react to "The Art of Dying", it's one of the most epic pieces of music ever made. Joe's vocals are at their peak in this song and the instrumentation is just as brutal. If you're looking for a live footage, the performance at the "Vieilles Charrues Festival" from 2010 is as perfect as it gets.
The Art of Dying by Gojira, is an absolute must hear song. Make sure to get the full version which is almost 10 minutes long. It is absolutely phenominal.
Fun fact. They wrote this album shortly after the singer and drummers mother passed away. Probably the most emotional album from Gojira. You will love Ocean Planet by then. My personal favorite. Or the art of dying. That’s probably the best hype song they have.
I've recently seen Gojira live. They are fantastic. One of the best out there. Particularly Joe, he sounds *exactly* the same as on album(very much to his credit), also his, and everyone else's playing is top notch.
Just saw them on the Mega Monsters Tour. All 3 bands were incredible, but Lorna and Gojira really shined for me. Sounded amazing. Not to mention Will being an absolute legend and stopping the concert mid song to get security's attention for somebody injured in the moshpit.
Big ups to your shout out for asking people to ask for help!!! We are only singular humans, we all need some help some times. Ask for help people, its uncomfortable, but the rewards are tremendous! I think most people I know want to help and most people are afraid to ask for help. So, there is an imbalance there. We need to connect the helpers to those who need help. It starts by being present LOCALLY!
My personal favorite song from Gojira would probably be "The Gift of Guilt", which there also happens to be an absolutely amazing concert of that deserves a watch/listen. It's a journey and a half!
This was the first song I heard by them. I was at work making dentures and this came on Spotify. Well... After cleaning the mess i made by sh**ting myself out of amazement, i bought the song, listened to it on repeat for the next 6 hours, and then proceeded to buy the Magma album. God i love this bamd more than ive ever loved a band in my life. I'm 34 and ive had many loves when it comes to music. From metal to punk to pop and sh*t I'll hardly admit to liking. Something about what Joe and the band possibly were going through was expressed so heavily and thick on the album that it just connected with me on a deep level that i cant even put ijto words now that I'm trying. It screams loss. It kills me. This album as a whole is an incredibly emotional experience. By the time i reach the last song I'm fucking WEEPING. Please listen to Magma. Start to finish. It's something special.
I remember when I first heard Gojira. First song was "Flying Whales" and the second was "The Heaviest Matter of The Universe". This was one the third song I ever heard from them. I was blown away by how heavy the breakdown was on the the first one... It was right after I had discovered "Domination" by Pantera which has a heavy breakdown after the first solo... I was on a breakdown journey at the time so that's who Gojira hit my radar years ago🤘🏻 And then of course it was Mario's duracell drumming and incredible synchapations and flawless switching between time signatures, with nasty legs on top of that. Especially during improvised drum solos. He really have 5 brains.
The Cell and The Axe are classic Gojira songs people haven't mentioned. The Axe might be my favorite song by them especially the Live at Brixton Academy video. The Cell he does some vocal techniques that are just godly in the chorus.
Where dragons dwell is my absolute favorite song ever. Like many of Gojira's songs the message behind it makes the lyrics so much more impactful and the cataclysmic ferocity behind Joe's vocals are the perfect vehicle for that. There aren't much vocals on the song but what is there leaves you truly stunned. Mario also goes absolutely insane as usual, highly recommend giving it a listen.
7:15 you talk about how it's almost "soothing or too mellow for metal." It's interesting how atmospheric they make a lot of their music. They are fantastic at writing songs that listeners can really get immersed in. The mellow bridge in this song is almost like the listener has accomplished some daunting task and is celebrating in the end. On top of that, a lot of their lyrics are sending messages about environmental awareness and positivity.
I think that the next deep dive into Gojira sound could be "The Cell", Elizabeth. The whole introduction of that music still cause me brain freeze every time that i hear, trying to assimilate the drum signature. And that introduction have enough energy to provide energy to a big city. 😁
Gojira's Live performance was absolutely insane when i seen them at Rockville 2021 (Daytona Speedway). had never heard of them before but this song melted me, along with a few others
Stuff like Oroborus, The Way Of Flesh, Art Of Dying and Flying Whales are definitely worth analyzing! It's always amazed me how Joe was able to death metal scream with a pitch, almost like he was actually "singing" but with insane amounts of distortion
There's just so many good songs to pick from: The Art of Dying, A Sight to Behold, Silvera, L'enfant Sauvage, Born in Winter, Flying Whales, Hold On, Into the Storm, Grind
1:08 Gojira loooooves to use that effect (Silvera is probably the best example other than this). They use a Whammy Pedal to pitch-shift into higher (and some lower) octaves. It's such a cool sound
Gojira is one of the most visceral and percussively powerful bands I've ever known. They're truly fantastic live, and they're VERY talented. The guitar work is percussive as well. The powerhouse of this band is Mario, their drummer. He's probably my favorite drummer of all time. What he does is just NUTS, live and in studio. The 'catfight' sound is a pitch wham pedal that Joe is ramping up to an octave above what he's actually playing and back. Then they kick in the flange pedal for the chorus. Thank you for listening to this! These guys are truly epic.
Going from "real-life Disney Princess opera singer" to "metal music expert and aficionado" in a span of what, three years? This is the transition my soul desperately needed!
Gojira is a band that is constantly exploring their sound and music in general. That's one of the things I love about them. One minute they're melting my face off with Heaviest Matter of the Universe, the next I'm thinking my way through The Art of Dying, and then I'm soaring with Flying Whales. They take great care to make sure you don't get bored with their music.
I can't say it enough, check out The Art Of Dying. Its the perfect combination of everything gojira do. The incredibly technical drumming in the intro, the fast death metal brutality and the tasty groovyness, all while constantly conveying unbelievably great melody and emotion, both in the riffs, and the vocals.
15:10 - Thank you... It's 4 a.m here in Poland and I'm just watching your vids before I wake up to work in maybe 4 hours, just because I was being pretty far from okay recently... Thank you so much for the message, but thank you for that because it will most definitely reach out to many people more like present me, past (I hope I can trust you with that) you, that maybe need those words right now... a lot more than me... Which terrifies me because I always learn there actually can be a lower level of "it can't get any worse" and it won't get better until you see a professional help.
While I don't think Adoration For None would be the best song for a vocal review because of the dual vocals, I'd love to see her analysis of Joe's vocals at 2:40 in that song. To me, that part sounds incredibly technical; the way Joe can do scales while screaming is mind-blowing.
More Gojira, please! 🙏 Haven't heard a song from them that I don't like, and they're awesome live! I'd definitely recommend Backbone, The Heaviest Matter of the Universe, L'Enfant Sauvage, Born in Winter, Silvera, and The Art of Dying!
THE ONE WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR! This is one of the only songs in existence that, by the bridge, I'm fighting tears with the overflow of his emotion.

I went to a concert to see mastodon and Gojira opened for them. I had no clue who they were but the energy and accuracy they had melted my face off. I’ve been a fan ever since.
Just took my daughter to see them live in Detroit few weeks back with mastodon and Lorna shore. What a amazing show. Mastodon should soon roll into your show. Three singers and great melodies. Plus the drummer plays and sings so good.
I always think of Mastadon when I hear Gojira. Love them both for their similarities and differences
Took my kids to see this show as well. Their first metal show with 3 of their favorite bands. Epic way to close out the summer before back to school.
Saw them in toronto, I was in the pit it was absolutely insane. The best show of my life
@@alexzupsic6455a sillly question but they don't mandate minimum age? Up in Toronto, they won't let any kid under 19 in to see an adult rated show like Lorna Shore. It's a shame because my 7-year-old loves them to death
Saw them in Cleveland. What a show.
Seeing them live is almost a revelation. Short of an epiphany. Will never forget that show.
Saw them live for the first time a couple of weeks ago, will not be my last time seeing them. They were incredible
@@jessekulbe1855 I had the pleasure of seeing them as opener for Alter Bridge a couple of years ago, knowing absolutely nothing about them. Almost melted the skin off my face. Then a couple of months ago again in Munich and it was such a great show. Ridiculously good. Can't wait to see them again.
I'm sorry, but I love alter bridge but Gojira should have been the headliner@@Drumming_Monkey
@@Deplorable_Garbage it was an Alter Bridge show. Why would gojira be the headliner for that? 😅
Joe is one of those singers where I actually have an easier time understanding when he screams than when he does clean singing!
If you ever get the chance to see Gojira live... DO IT! One of the best live bands I've ever seen!
Such a special band, they are finally getting the level of respect they deserve within the genre.
I just LOVE Mario's drumming. Never ceases to impress me, how he manages to be super heavy and still extremely fluid.
He’s sooooo good
Elizabeth's excitement and joy listening to this is palpable. I love that she calls out all the aspects of the band that makes them so fucking good! Saw them in concert for the first time last month and was blown away
You have become so effective doing these harsher vocal type bands...you obviously go in knowing that its not going to be Pavarotti, not a whole lot of voice dissection, yet you still fill twenty plus minutes with loads of knowledge and piles of joy...watching you evolve on this channel has been incredible...
*devolve
@@independenceltd. That's interesting...I was only looking at it from my point of view. I suppose some would consider it devolution. That being said, I've read that Pavarotti's favorite vocalist was Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, so whose to say...

Your commentary is so insightful that it gives me an opportunity to hear old favorites as if I'm hearing them all over again for the first time. I really appreciate that.
The pedal used to create that sound like "cats fighting" is called a whammy pedal. It is a foot-controlled pitch shifting pedal basically.
Yes!
DigiTech!
Digitech Whammy 4 FTW!!!
Whaaat?! That’s a whammy? I would have never guessed that. Now I’m going to have to figured out how to get that tone.
I think their whole first album is criminally underrated. Satan is a lawyer, Clone, Love, and others are some of the best drums and vocals from Gojira.
Love Sial prolly one of my fav Gojira songs
First album was a god send. NGL i hate anything after The Way of All Flesh. It feels like the intensity just left
The Link Alive 2003 performance in Bordeaux is potentially the heaviest set ever performed by any metal band, the best of their first two albums performed with so much emotion and energy
Blow Me Away You(niverse) has one of the heaviest riffs they've ever written on it.
Clone, instrumentally, is by far my favorite gojira song. Definately agree on that one being amazing.
I became obsessed with how he did the double tap on that riff, it's a fun one to experiment with and change around
My introduction was flying whales, but what actually got me listening to them was Born in Winter
Dude i wanted to go to that show but it was too expensive for me
I saw them in Atlanta a few months ago and it was the same reaction for me, they're amazing live.
I'd love to see you listen to "Born In Winter". It might not get mentioned the most here but I think it's very underrated. It's simple but such an amazing groove, and brings a sound that only Gojira has. Also showcases some very good vocals!
I second this. His voice rattles your bones.
Their best song imho
Seconded! I think she'd really enjoy Born in Winter. It's one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
Born in Winter deserves more love, its what got me in to Gojira
Yep
Gojira has failed to produce a bad song or album to date yet, EVERY song and album is pure gold, one of the best bands to ever take the stage today, nothing but musical geniuses
I disagree, and don’t get me wrong, I LOVE gojira, they are incredible, but their first album is bad for me.
The last album inst good
@@yuridornelasright it wasn't good, it was great
@@cotopaximusic Exactly, and that’s what I love about the band, all their music from every album has a different sound and feel to it. I didn’t like The Way of All Flesh when it first came out, but it grew on me over time and I grew to love it. L’enfant Sauvage is their best album I think, with Magma next, again, it’s hard to pick and choose a best album, they all just fucking rock, and I hope they put out another 20 albums before I die

WHAT?
terra incognita is fucking great
"Low Lands' is really one of a kind from Gojira, very emotionnal, almost only clear voice all along, deep lyrics, but slowly transition to screaming heavier and heavier toward the end with the emotion rising up...
It's a true piece of poetry.
When the intimistic sadness unleashes the fury of the raw feelings.
It's heavy yet beautiful and hits right in the guts.
A really rare gem I think.
Low Lands is an emotional ride, vocals are on point, music video is beautiful
It's so gratifying to see someone hear Gojira and hear the emotional tone of it. It confuses people how heavy metal can be so soothing and emotional, and for me it's because it's the most raw feeling in any of the music I listen to. Born in Winter and Low Lands are top picks for emotional crescendos. Plus! Permanent subscriber for the little mental health callout, thank you
I could not agree with you more on both the emotionality of metal and the emotionality of these two songs!
Stranded is awesome, but my favorite Gojira song is Art of Dying, it has (in my opinion) the best breakdown in this kind of progressive metal/death metal genre, can't wait for you to hear that.
This is by far their best album and doesn't get the respect it deserves. Magma has nothing but bangers
Nah Cradle of filth are better.
I was so sad they never played Vacuity in Montreal.
Their performance at the Olympics has you written all over it. It was overwhelming to process
If you ever get the chance to see them live, you will not be disappointed. Incredible show!
First time listening to Gojira & when the harsh vocals started, I immediately appreciated how well I could actually understand his words! Back to the video ---
A couple more minutes in & Elizabeth is mentioning this -- I should have waited! 😆
I must agree with @Syphon_drummer on this
@@claudiunica8661 I think you dont understand the meaning of "one of"

Had the pleasure to see Gojira live a few weeks ago. They are with out a doubt the best band I've got to experience live. Masters of their crafts
The Art of Dying is such an experience the first time you hear it. It's extremely sad but in such a euphoric way. You'll feel pulled in, like someone is calling you from another world, it'll tear you about and leave you feeling so empty that it hurts.
Just saw these guys in Cincinnati last month. I cannot stress how great they were live. They really crushed it.
I was in crisis, middle of a psychosis but felt this in a different level and it helped me. Full of emotion.
The closing refrain of "Leave the moment alone" gives me goosebumps every time I hear it 💔
Seen them this Year again - was again mindblowing.
One of the best Live Bands i know
Heard this live at a festival in Aus last year, the “cats fighting” sound was ear splitting, and then the kick drums hitting you right in the chest was absolutely one of the biggest highlights of my life! Had the biggest stink face during the intro
Still gives me chills just thinking about it
If you're going to look at Gojira again, you need to analyze the live version of Global Warming recorded in their studio. It is absolutely perfect and my favorite vocal performance by Joe. You can feel the heartbreak and desperation in his voice and it's beautiful.
One of my favourite bands for 18 years now. Crazy!! 😬🤘🏻
Great breakdown. 👍🏻
If you're looking for a live footage, the performance at the "Vieilles Charrues Festival" from 2010 is as perfect as it gets.
that show was my ticket to Gojira. there aren't many live shows like that. just amazing.
The Art of Dying by Gojira, is an absolute must hear song. Make sure to get the full version which is almost 10 minutes long. It is absolutely phenominal.
This is going to be good! Gojira is a tremendous band. 🤘
The change ups, and timing changes tickle my brain. Mario is such an amazing drummer!
PLEASE! Listen to "born in winter". This song gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. It never gets old.
I came to gojira late in life, can’t believe I didn’t find them until 45. Huge metal head since I was a kid. Absolutely amazing band.
coming to them at 50
Stranded was my introduction to Gojira and I was obsessed with it immediately. The vocals and that riff just kept playing in my head
I. Love. This. Band. no one else sounds like them. you know exactly who the band is the moment thei music plays
I was on a breakdown journey at the time so that's who Gojira hit my radar years ago🤘🏻
And then of course it was Mario's duracell drumming and incredible synchapations and flawless switching between time signatures, with nasty legs on top of that.
Gojira is amazing live. I saw them along with Lorna Shore and mastadon on the mega monsters tour. (lorna shore is my favorite band lol)
Me and my buddy went I was most excited for gojira and he was most excited for lorna lol
I’m gonna see them this Nov 25th! Both Gojira and Mastodon! First time I’ll see these bands live and I’m so excited!
ayyy have fun man
The best metal band on earth imo, a 50 yr old metalhead. Absolutely amazing live as well! Thx for doing this one!
I always found Gojira vocals agressive yet melancholic at the some time. Its interesting combination.
Their heavy songs are legendary, but nothing beats Born In Winter imho, makes me tear up every time
7:15 you talk about how it's almost "soothing or too mellow for metal." It's interesting how atmospheric they make a lot of their music.
I have to say I love your enthusiasm for music, it's infectious!
Elizabeth you are a bless for metal community !
All of your videos is a piece of joy ! ❤
L’Enfaunt Savage has to be the next Gojira track! Amazing vocal work from Joe on that song, and brilliant riffs!
“L’enfant Sauvage” has to be next. Vocals are probably more emotional and impassioned in that one than in any other.
I've absolutelyoved witnessing her evolution. So fun and exciting
"Expert"? Nowhere near.
This song released when I was in highschool, and it's kind of the first gonira song I paid attention to, it's still one of my favourites! Love that!
Just saw Gojira last night here in Kansas City! Good timing!
L'enfant sauvage, Born in Winter, New found and Another world are some more masterpieces from Gojira, can't recommend them enough
Can't wait to hear your take on this. Stranded is the song that was my introduction to Gojira.
THE ONE WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR! This is one of the only songs in existence that, by the bridge, I'm fighting tears with the overflow of his emotion.
"Into the Storm" is to me their best song vocally. The vocal dynamics are incredible and, to my ears, sound very difficult to pull off.
