My second try at Gojira! Vocal ANALYSIS of "Stranded" based on your recommendations!

- The first time I heard Gojira, it was at the behest of Will Ramos of Lorna Shore who was touring with them earlier this year. Will's favorite song, "Amazonia" had so much spirit and insight that I have been exceptionally intrigued ever since (plus I watched the "How to Gojira in 30 seconds" by Nik Nocturnal that had me reeling). So based on your most recommended, here we go with "Stranded"!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Gojira performing "Stranded" for the first time.

The Art of Dying and Flying Whales are an absolute must. Two Gojira masterpieces.
100%
OMG Flying Whales is the best one for me
Nah this song is far far better
The Art Of Dying, Flying Whales and The Way Of All Flesh are literally my top three songs of all time
100% on The Art of Dying. I NEED to see her break that song down
OMG Elizabeth's reaction to hearing her first Digitech Whammy pedal is adorable! 😂
Gojira probably helped Digitech to quadruple their sales of the whammy pedal...
@@federicos.8283 or maybe RATM and Tool
She has heard it before in a RATM analysis, but what I love the most about this is, she described it as a digital cat noise then as well! It made me laugh so much and it's just so perfect that this was her instant first impression of hearing a pitch shifter here too!
The "cats fighting" reminds me of an old interview with Dimebag Darrel about his use of whammy on Becoming.
"It’s too bad that you noticed it was a Whammy Pedal, because we were going to tell people that we were abusing an animal to produce that sound - you know, ‘We were jumping on a cat, then we simply plugged a cord up its ass and threw a little EQ on it.’ "
12:15 for me lol
This song is a tribute to their then-recently deceased mother (the singer and drummer are brothers). The pain feels real because it was extremely real.
Born in Winter is another excellent example of Gojira's genre bending transitions, both vocally and instrumentally. The music video still gives me goose bumps every time I watch it, nine years after first seeing it!
that's the first Gojira song I ever heard (still my favorite), then I went to find more and The Heaviest Matter of the Universe was the 2nd one I ever heard
I remember after hearing those back to back I was like "yeah this band is unreal, i'm gonna go listen to everything they've ever recorded" lmao
Agreed born in winter is amazing
Born in Winter makes me cry every. Fucking. time.
Amen! I love so many of Gojira's songs but Born in Winter is my favorite.
Not only I fully agree with you but I'm also learning English expression. Here it's the "goose bumps" which I learnt. In French we say "hen's flesh" (chair de poule). Okay this comment is sooooo uninteresting 😂😂😂 Don't fuc*ing blame me 🙄
If you're looking for more Gojira to react to, 'Art of Dying' is a great one. His vocals are exceptionally good at expressing emotions without even needing a whole lot of range.
The Art of Dying at Red Rocks is just top notch. Probably one of all time favourite live performances.
I need her to dissect that intro. So PLEASE, Elizabeth, that one next!!!!
YES
Oh yeah. And good luck to Elizabeth trying to count the time signature in the intro xD
@@h3rrpie373 They never performed that at Red Rocks. They just started performing it again on the Mastodon tours after many years break of not playing it live at all.
Now we just need more heavy gojira. Heaviest matter in the universe or backbone are good examples of what joe can really do with his vocals. O and dont forget art of dying or toxic garbage island, they really highlight joe's vocal power.
Edit: really wasnt expecting this comment to get this much attention
backbone may be my favorite riffage
As a drummer, Toxic Garbage Island or the Art of Dying.
BACK-FUCKING-BOONNNNNEEEEEE
Heaviest matter of the universe has one of the greatest riffs ever. I hope she does that one
Some older live versions would be nice too
One of my favorite concert moments is when I saw Gojira opening up for someone. They were going into the next song, and, completely seriously, introduced it, saying, "This song is about whales that fly. It's called FLYING WHALES!!!" It killed me. Love 'em.
I recently watched them in concert and they opened up for Mastodon, and honestly they were better then mastodon
My first concert was gojira and I literally cried when they started playing the Flying whales intro 😂
Born in Winter is my favourite.
It's melancholy but lifting sound, interesting vocals and overall progression make an amazing piece of art.
Born in winter blew me away. I'm a passer by. I don't listen to Gojira, but I can't stop listening to 4 songs by Gojira.
This and born in winter, along with new found.
I hope L’Enfant Sauvage is the next Gojira pick. The final part of the song still gives me chills, even though it's been out for more than a decade. Lyrics are awesome as well.
Art of dying gives me chills like that
Love that track!
L'Enfant Sauvage is one of their most underrated tracks
Fuck yes!
.... LS is older than a decade now, isnt it? jeez where did time go...
The cat fighting sound is a guitar effect called Whammy. Gojira being fans of Sepultura and Soulfly really made one of the signature sounds of Max Cavalera their own. I love how Gojira makes things their own and it's very natural.
This. The DigiTech Whammy pedal, originally made in 1989 I believe. For the benefit of those who are unfamiliar, it's a variable pitch shifter that uses an expression pedal to bend the pitch of guitar notes up to two octaves above the root. In this instance, the pedal is rocked back to zero (plays at root) for the staccato chords in the first half of the riff, and rocked forward to full (plays two octaves higher) for the arpeggio in the second half.
@@Apostasy362 Aren't Christian and Joe playing an harmonic at the same time, though? 🤔
@@christellemercier9019 The sound we're hearing is the Whammy. A variable pitch shifter is the only way you can get that sound; can't make it without one. You can tell by listening to the way the pitch bends up into the notes at the start of the phrase as the pedal's being rocked forward. I've tried replicating it with my DigiTech pedal before out of curiosity, and while it takes some coordination and practice to get the timing right, the effect is spot on.
They're playing the same arpeggio during the verse, just without using the Whammy.
@@Apostasy362 Oh, I do agree on the Whammy! Wouldn't be the first time Joe hides a harmony behind things, though, you know him! *Rolls eyes*
@@christellemercier9019 I'm not the man to say definitively that he *isn't* doing that... but since you more than likely wouldn't even hear it during those passages (I can't), given how harsh and in-your-face the Whammy effect is, I'm guessing he wouldn't bother there.
Other places, though... lol.
Gojira has failed to produce a bad song or album to date yet, EVERY song and album is pure gold, one of the best bands to ever take the stage today, nothing but musical geniuses
I disagree, and don’t get me wrong, I LOVE gojira, they are incredible, but their first album is bad for me.
The last album inst good
@@yuridornelasright it wasn't good, it was great
@@cotopaximusic Exactly, and that’s what I love about the band, all their music from every album has a different sound and feel to it. I didn’t like The Way of All Flesh when it first came out, but it grew on me over time and I grew to love it. L’enfant Sauvage is their best album I think, with Magma next, again, it’s hard to pick and choose a best album, they all just fucking rock, and I hope they put out another 20 albums before I die
@@demonofthefall93
WHAT?
terra incognita is fucking great
The Gift Of Guilt is another incredible song in a long list of amazing Gojira songs
MORE GOJIRA YES!!!!!! These guys are easily in my top 3 bands of all time. Joe Duplantier is my guitar hero.
Mario is my drum hero. They are the coolest brothers in the world.
@@mannygonzalez-lz5im they really are! I love that they're both artists too and all the album art is theirs. Mario is unreal. Metronomes use him to calibrate. Lol
Absolutely! All of those dudes are heroes. Meshuggah is another that are amazing (I have so many favorite bands LOL). 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@MoSaleh89 Meshuggah and Gojira are the two bands that lead the charge in the genre right now. Saw Meshuggah live a while ago, Gojira are next.
@@NikkLiberos YES!!! I couldn’t have said it better myself. I’ve seen Meshuggah 6 times now and I will probably see them again (they’re coming to SD in Nov). Gojira is absolutely amazing live as well, you obviously won’t be disappointed. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The album “Stranded” was inspired by the sickeness and death of Joe & Mario’s mother. The topic of the song is coming from a place of being overwhelmed by one’s emotions and still having to contemplate and carry on with the future.
When I lost my dad a couple of years ago Lowlands and Shooting Star became so big emotionally for me it's hard to listen to them some days. Shooting Star is just crushing.
The album is Magma.
I came to say this, but yeah the album is Magma hehe
The album is Magma and Patricia Rosa born in azores island , she was portuguese/american .
This album is their best
Seeing them live is almost a revelation. Short of an epiphany. Will never forget that show.
Saw them live for the first time a couple of weeks ago, will not be my last time seeing them. They were incredible
@@jessekulbe1855 I had the pleasure of seeing them as opener for Alter Bridge a couple of years ago, knowing absolutely nothing about them. Almost melted the skin off my face. Then a couple of months ago again in Munich and it was such a great show. Ridiculously good. Can't wait to see them again.
Elizabeth's really hitting her stride, I've gotta say. As natural a teacher as she is a talent.
Gojira's whole is greater than the sum of their parts. None of their riffs or song structures are terribly complicated, but there is something about the way they put their songs together that makes them special and believe me when I say this, there IS no more devastating live band on the planet.
Also, Gojira is the band that will take up the Metal mantle after Metallica and even the members of Metallica have said so. They are ahead of their time and they've actually been around since the early 2000s.
Just went and saw them in Boston for the first time.. it was incredible and an experience I hope I'll be able to visit again. Unforgettable
This is a good way of putting it. They are a machine. Gojira / Mastodon / Lamb of God will be the flag carriers for sure.
@@HuginnTheNord Ayy I was at that show too (both nights). So sick.
The only thing I'd disagree with is that their music isnt complicated lmao songs like Remembrance andThe Art of Dying have something to say
Metallica also said Trivium are a great sucesor with their latest works
The live studio performance of their song "Global Warming" is an awesome representation of his vocals live (mind blowing) and just a really incredible, emotional performance and song.
So true
You should be top comment, damn!
Their live radio performance of Shooting Star is surprisingly phenomenal too. I never thought that song was particularly heavy until watching them do it live while really paying attention to the lyrics. Global Warming though is such a masterpiece and still topical AF.
And what he is playing on his guitar at the same time is also impressive.
I agree so much. She has to react to it!
I think their whole first album is criminally underrated. Satan is a lawyer, Clone, Love, and others are some of the best drums and vocals from Gojira.
Love Sial prolly one of my fav Gojira songs
First album was a god send. NGL i hate anything after The Way of All Flesh. It feels like the intensity just left
The Link Alive 2003 performance in Bordeaux is potentially the heaviest set ever performed by any metal band, the best of their first two albums performed with so much emotion and energy
Blow Me Away You(niverse) has one of the heaviest riffs they've ever written on it.
Clone, instrumentally, is by far my favorite gojira song. Definately agree on that one being amazing.
I'll never forget the day I stumbled into hearing these live supporting Trivium in the UK on their From Mars to Sirius Tour... holy hell. Everyone in that crowd was standing there asking like wtf have we just witnessed. Absolutely one of the best live bands I've ever heard.
My introduction to Gojira, back in the day 😃 The riff is just amazing, great song. For your next Gojira analysis, allow me to suggest "Born in Winter" from _L'Enfant Sauvage_ , which shows Joe's vocal range and is an absolute banger of a song musically. Such a great tune.
I became obsessed with how he did the double tap on that riff, it's a fun one to experiment with and change around
My introduction was flying whales, but what actually got me listening to them was Born in Winter
The pedal used to create that sound like "cats fighting" is called a whammy pedal. It is a foot-controlled pitch shifting pedal basically.
Yes!
DigiTech!
Digitech Whammy 4 FTW!!!
I went to a concert to see mastodon and Gojira opened for them. I had no clue who they were but the energy and accuracy they had melted my face off. I’ve been a fan ever since.
Such a special band, they are finally getting the level of respect they deserve within the genre.
I'd love to see you listen to "Born In Winter". It might not get mentioned the most here but I think it's very underrated. It's simple but such an amazing groove, and brings a sound that only Gojira has. Also showcases some very good vocals!
I second this. His voice rattles your bones.
Their best song imho
Seconded! I think she'd really enjoy Born in Winter. It's one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
Born in Winter deserves more love, its what got me in to Gojira
Yep
Just took my daughter to see them live in Detroit few weeks back with mastodon and Lorna shore. What a amazing show. Mastodon should soon roll into your show. Three singers and great melodies. Plus the drummer plays and sings so good.
I always think of Mastadon when I hear Gojira. Love them both for their similarities and differences
Took my kids to see this show as well. Their first metal show with 3 of their favorite bands. Epic way to close out the summer before back to school.
Saw them in toronto, I was in the pit it was absolutely insane. The best show of my life
@@alexzupsic6455a sillly question but they don't mandate minimum age? Up in Toronto, they won't let any kid under 19 in to see an adult rated show like Lorna Shore. It's a shame because my 7-year-old loves them to death
Saw them in Cleveland. What a show.
Just saw them live in St.Louis for the first time on Tuesday night. They were epic!! I couldnt quit smiling the whole set. They played this song too and its just as amazing live. Ugh if i could go back. Watching this us bringing it all back!
I saw them in a festival with friends in 2018, Mexico City. I wasn't even a fan, I went for my friends although I knew a couple songs off Magma (like this one) and liked them.
I was totally blown away and walked out an instant fan. Curiously enough, Mastodon played the day earlier and I had pretty much the exact same experience with them.
What a treasure it can be, going to shows, especially with friends.
Dude i wanted to go to that show but it was too expensive for me
I saw them in Atlanta a few months ago and it was the same reaction for me, they're amazing live.
The Art of Dying by Gojira, is an absolute must hear song. Make sure to get the full version which is almost 10 minutes long. It is absolutely phenominal.
Joe is one of those singers where I actually have an easier time understanding when he screams than when he does clean singing!
If you ever get the chance to see Gojira live... DO IT! One of the best live bands I've ever seen!
You have become so effective doing these harsher vocal type bands...you obviously go in knowing that its not going to be Pavarotti, not a whole lot of voice dissection, yet you still fill twenty plus minutes with loads of knowledge and piles of joy...watching you evolve on this channel has been incredible...
*devolve
@@independenceltd. That's interesting...I was only looking at it from my point of view. I suppose some would consider it devolution. That being said, I've read that Pavarotti's favorite vocalist was Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, so whose to say...
@@johnjohn37371 me and pavarotti have a lot in common, i see
@@independenceltd.let me guess, you don't listen to metal?
@@athmaid only since 1978? you?
just got home from the last of the monsters of rock tour with Gojira, Mastadon, and lorna shore.absolutely amazing live and amazing people in all those bands.
If you're going to look at Gojira again, you need to analyze the live version of Global Warming recorded in their studio. It is absolutely perfect and my favorite vocal performance by Joe. You can feel the heartbreak and desperation in his voice and it's beautiful.
I just LOVE Mario's drumming. Never ceases to impress me, how he manages to be super heavy and still extremely fluid.
He’s sooooo good
"Low Lands' is really one of a kind from Gojira, very emotionnal, almost only clear voice all along, deep lyrics, but slowly transition to screaming heavier and heavier toward the end with the emotion rising up...
It's a true piece of poetry.
When the intimistic sadness unleashes the fury of the raw feelings.
It's heavy yet beautiful and hits right in the guts.
A really rare gem I think.
Low Lands is an emotional ride, vocals are on point, music video is beautiful
The song that introduced me to Gojira was Flying Whales, I'd definitely recommend getting around to that if you plan to do more Gojira.
I think that the next deep dive into Gojira sound could be "The Cell", Elizabeth. The whole introduction of that music still cause me brain freeze every time that i hear, trying to assimilate the drum signature. And that introduction have enough energy to provide energy to a big city. 😁
Biggest and Best band out there right now. I really feel L'enfant Sauvage should be your next dip into Gojira. Joes vocals really shine in that song. And on a side note....eventually you will end up at Flying Whales. I got to enjoy it live just a week ago!!
Nah Cradle of filth are better.
I was so sad they never played Vacuity in Montreal.
Stranded is awesome, but my favorite Gojira song is Art of Dying, it has (in my opinion) the best breakdown in this kind of progressive metal/death metal genre, can't wait for you to hear that.
This is by far their best album and doesn't get the respect it deserves. Magma has nothing but bangers
I. Love. This. Band. no one else sounds like them. you know exactly who the band is the moment thei music plays
One of my favourite bands for 18 years now. Crazy!! 😬🤘🏻
Great breakdown. 👍🏻
You NEED to react to "The Art of Dying", it's one of the most epic pieces of music ever made. Joe's vocals are at their peak in this song and the instrumentation is just as brutal. If you're looking for a live footage, the performance at the "Vieilles Charrues Festival" from 2010 is as perfect as it gets.
that show was my ticket to Gojira. there aren't many live shows like that. just amazing.
PLEASE! Listen to "born in winter". This song gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. It never gets old.
1:08 Gojira loooooves to use that effect (Silvera is probably the best example other than this). They use a Whammy Pedal to pitch-shift into higher (and some lower) octaves. It's such a cool sound
Elizabeth's excitement and joy listening to this is palpable. I love that she calls out all the aspects of the band that makes them so fucking good! Saw them in concert for the first time last month and was blown away
This is going to be good! Gojira is a tremendous band. 🤘
I think L'Enfant Sauvage is even more emotional in terms of vocals. And believe it or not, Amazonia and Stranded are one of the lightest and least heavy songs by Gojira, L'Enfant Sauvage is much closer to their, lets say, "signature sound"
Amazonia and Stranded are far from their lightest tracks. Please listen to all of their work. They have extremely beautiful tracks within every album. They know how to create a vibe.
@@Syphon_Drummer I listened to their entire discography countless times. Stranded and Amazonia are closer to the heavy rock than to typical metal, meanwhile whole first 4 albums are death metal mix with groove metal and prog. Doesnt mean its bad, Im just underlining that most of Gojira stuff sounds different
@MotorhitPL If Amazonia and Stranded are the least heavy songs by Gojira then what can you say about The Chant for example. I must agree with @Syphon_drummer on this
@@claudiunica8661 I think you dont understand the meaning of "one of"
🤣 funny guy... even if you listened to their entire discography countless times it seems that it was not enough so please listen to it again 😊
If you ever get the chance to see them live, you will not be disappointed. Incredible show!
The Cell and The Axe are classic Gojira songs people haven't mentioned. The Axe might be my favorite song by them especially the Live at Brixton Academy video. The Cell he does some vocal techniques that are just godly in the chorus.
Gojira is amazing live. I saw them along with Lorna Shore and mastadon on the mega monsters tour. (lorna shore is my favorite band lol)
Me and my buddy went I was most excited for gojira and he was most excited for lorna lol
I’m gonna see them this Nov 25th! Both Gojira and Mastodon! First time I’ll see these bands live and I’m so excited!
ayyy have fun man
The closing refrain of "Leave the moment alone" gives me goosebumps every time I hear it 💔
The Art of Dying is such an experience the first time you hear it. It's extremely sad but in such a euphoric way. You'll feel pulled in, like someone is calling you from another world, it'll tear you about and leave you feeling so empty that it hurts.
Their heavy songs are legendary, but nothing beats Born In Winter imho, makes me tear up every time
Heard this live at a festival in Aus last year, the “cats fighting” sound was ear splitting, and then the kick drums hitting you right in the chest was absolutely one of the biggest highlights of my life! Had the biggest stink face during the intro
Still gives me chills just thinking about it
Just saw Gojira last night here in Kansas City! Good timing!
Your commentary is so insightful that it gives me an opportunity to hear old favorites as if I'm hearing them all over again for the first time. I really appreciate that.
Seen them this Year again - was again mindblowing.
One of the best Live Bands i know
I've recently seen Gojira live. They are fantastic. One of the best out there. Particularly Joe, he sounds *exactly* the same as on album(very much to his credit), also his, and everyone else's playing is top notch.
Just saw these guys for the first time 6 days ago with Lorna Shore and Mastodon and they blew me away. They sound so amazing live and they seem like they really enjoy playing so much.
I have to say I love your enthusiasm for music, it's infectious!
I love your metal reaction! Thanks for not judging and being a person who truly appreciates all forms of music. We need more people like you!
It's so gratifying to see someone hear Gojira and hear the emotional tone of it. It confuses people how heavy metal can be so soothing and emotional, and for me it's because it's the most raw feeling in any of the music I listen to. Born in Winter and Low Lands are top picks for emotional crescendos. Plus! Permanent subscriber for the little mental health callout, thank you
I could not agree with you more on both the emotionality of metal and the emotionality of these two songs!
Going from "real-life Disney Princess opera singer" to "metal music expert and aficionado" in a span of what, three years? This is the transition my soul desperately needed!
I've absolutelyoved witnessing her evolution. So fun and exciting
"Expert"? Nowhere near.
I went to see Gojira for the 3rd time this past Tuesday in St. Louis. BY FAR one of the best LIVE performances of a metal band ever! The sound the show and the energy are amazing! Highly Recommend!
Well this was super freaking fun! Loooove the giddy reactions from Elizabeth on all the little details that make Gojira so interesting. I was smiling and grooving all along 🤘😁🤘 Thanks for this, made my day!
Just saw them on the Mega Monsters Tour. All 3 bands were incredible, but Lorna and Gojira really shined for me. Sounded amazing. Not to mention Will being an absolute legend and stopping the concert mid song to get security's attention for somebody injured in the moshpit.
His vocals are very unique. He doesn't scream, or is very loud at all. His singing is a bit more than talking voice, he just amplifies the mic a bit more than normal to get the volume.
That's actually the healthy way to do growling vocals. Most singers actually do it this way. If they don't, they'll mess up their voice. It's also why I cringe when people call it screaming. It isn't screaming. At least not if it's down the healthy way. It's more about the attitude you feel when you do it and, of course, the technique.
As always, the best react. So much energy and passion !
“L’enfant Sauvage” has to be next. Vocals are probably more emotional and impassioned in that one than in any other.
L’Enfaunt Savage has to be the next Gojira track! Amazing vocal work from Joe on that song, and brilliant riffs!
Can't wait to hear your take on this. Stranded is the song that was my introduction to Gojira.
I flew to Asheville, NC from New Orleans in May just to see Gojira live. It was easily one of the greatest live shows that I've ever experienced, and I've seen bands like AC/DC, the original lineups of Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pantera, etc live. I can't count the number of shows I've been to, and Gojira is up there with the best of them.
One of the things I love most about this band besides their incredible musical talent are their progressive takes about many topics. If you love this song and want to hear them take on some of said topics, then most definitely check out 'Amazonia' or 'Another World'. Amazonia almost netted them a Grammy, but they unfortunately didn't win it.
Edit: My bad, I didn't realize that you've already listened to Amazonia lol.
Elizabeth you are a bless for metal community !
All of your videos is a piece of joy ! ❤
Had the pleasure to see Gojira live a few weeks ago. They are with out a doubt the best band I've got to experience live. Masters of their crafts
You should watch some live recordings of Gojira. You'll be surprised how much it sounds like the studio version. They're crushing it live.
Just saw these guys in Cincinnati last month. I cannot stress how great they were live. They really crushed it.
Flyign Whales is one of my favorite Gojira songs. The song that started my journey with Gojira. I saw them in concert earlier this year.
Stuff like Oroborus, The Way Of Flesh, Art Of Dying and Flying Whales are definitely worth analyzing! It's always amazed me how Joe was able to death metal scream with a pitch, almost like he was actually "singing" but with insane amounts of distortion
Great stuff - would be fun to see you do Mastodon with their three vocalists
The change ups, and timing changes tickle my brain. Mario is such an amazing drummer!
Literally just started listening to them! Excited to watch this!
I listened to this song for the first time the other day. Fell in love with it. Mainly because the chorus just sends me back to the 80's of thrash metal. That groovy, melodic guitar sound. Made me fall in love with metal again, oh how I miss classic thrash, like Metallica.
amazing vid thank you for adding so much and covering my favorite band : )
I remember when I first heard Gojira. First song was "Flying Whales" and the second was "The Heaviest Matter of The Universe". This was one the third song I ever heard from them. I was blown away by how heavy the breakdown was on the the first one... It was right after I had discovered "Domination" by Pantera which has a heavy breakdown after the first solo... I was on a breakdown journey at the time so that's who Gojira hit my radar years ago🤘🏻
And then of course it was Mario's duracell drumming and incredible synchapations and flawless switching between time signatures, with nasty legs on top of that. Especially during improvised drum solos. He really have 5 brains.
More Gojira, please! 🙏 Haven't heard a song from them that I don't like, and they're awesome live! I'd definitely recommend Backbone, The Heaviest Matter of the Universe, L'Enfant Sauvage, Born in Winter, Silvera, and The Art of Dying!
Where dragons dwell is my absolute favorite song ever. Like many of Gojira's songs the message behind it makes the lyrics so much more impactful and the cataclysmic ferocity behind Joe's vocals are the perfect vehicle for that. There aren't much vocals on the song but what is there leaves you truly stunned. Mario also goes absolutely insane as usual, highly recommend giving it a listen.
There's just so many good songs to pick from: The Art of Dying, A Sight to Behold, Silvera, L'enfant Sauvage, Born in Winter, Flying Whales, Hold On, Into the Storm, Grind
In the top 5 of the metal scene currently, gems on every albums, and their live performances are stunning.
There still have changed a lot since their start in the 2000's, and Joe's vocal have increased so much, in the way that he is not only growling, but speaking, with an extremely raspy voice.
No need to talk about his brother Mario on the drums, on of the best in the world.
The 2 other members, are very efficient, and bring their touch, and presence as well on stage, and creativity.
7:15 you talk about how it's almost "soothing or too mellow for metal." It's interesting how atmospheric they make a lot of their music. They are fantastic at writing songs that listeners can really get immersed in. The mellow bridge in this song is almost like the listener has accomplished some daunting task and is celebrating in the end. On top of that, a lot of their lyrics are sending messages about environmental awareness and positivity.
Gojira is INCREDIBLE!
Stranded was my introduction to Gojira and I was obsessed with it immediately. The vocals and that riff just kept playing in my head
Saw them live recently and they were so good! One of the best shows I’ve gone to
"Into the Storm" is to me their best song vocally. The vocal dynamics are incredible and, to my ears, sound very difficult to pull off.
I can't say it enough, check out The Art Of Dying. Its the perfect combination of everything gojira do. The incredibly technical drumming in the intro, the fast death metal brutality and the tasty groovyness, all while constantly conveying unbelievably great melody and emotion, both in the riffs, and the vocals.
The step up of the vocal during the 2nd half of the chorus gives me goosebumps every time!
This is probably my favourite Gojira song, I love the intro and the rhythm of this track.
First time listening to Gojira & when the harsh vocals started, I immediately appreciated how well I could actually understand his words! Back to the video ---
A couple more minutes in & Elizabeth is mentioning this -- I should have waited! 😆
While I don't think Adoration For None would be the best song for a vocal review because of the dual vocals, I'd love to see her analysis of Joe's vocals at 2:40 in that song. To me, that part sounds incredibly technical; the way Joe can do scales while screaming is mind-blowing.
This is one of my absolute favorite songs. I'm obsessed with the kind of talkbox-y bass line. I'm so glad you listened to it. Silvera is another of my favorites from them.
I came to gojira late in life, can’t believe I didn’t find them until 45. Huge metal head since I was a kid. Absolutely amazing band.
coming to them at 50
